#Airbrushing Skin Tones

I made my first attempt at airbrushing Skin today. It's a mess. Blending isn't smooth and worst of all I created a lot of texture. I'm pretty sure I know my issue is just that I still can't figure out how to thin down my paint. I would put on one layer, it would be super thin and run. Then I would put on a second layer and it would be too thick and clog the airbrush. But I figured I'd show and see if anybody had any other advice I may be missing.

Hello, I'm not an expert at airbrushing but I'd expect also it's about control to reach a balance between airbrush pressure, how much you press and pull back, versus how much the paint is thinned. I've seen Vince Venturella used very, very thinned mixes and yet not create texture (or splashes) if he doesn't want to.

#

But he also uses "not 50-bucks" airbrushes, so one check would be: are you using a cheapo' airbrush or a branded one?

#

(A quick note also that, as far as I'm concerned, I want some level of texture on skin to remain because, layer after layer, it would otherwise be a single color, and skin is varied.)

Adjacent to your question: I've also seen a few painters use a mix of brush and airbrush for skin (building strong contrast, smoothing out, going up to highest highlight, then back down with a slight color variation towards shadows, etc)

#

It's interesting in this case just to say this: are you limiting yourself to 2-3 layers? I guess skin needs more to pop up.

This is 4 Color layers that I did twice trying to fix it.

#

5 if you include the magenta base I started with.

Bro you payin me to help with this stuff

#

you need to airbrush darker tones back in, specifically reddish tones

#

and if you want to get real wild, some pale blue tones

#

very sparing with the blue

Hi @foggy forum I think you are using a paint much thick, so it must have clogged, also by the signs of splashing. Try add some shadows, like says @opal owl and tones, with brush and after again with Aero, but with more diluted paint 💪

Thinning the paint down enough and not too much is definitely something I haven't gotten the hang of yet. Or getting the pressure right with really thinned down paint anyway.
