How do I take this picture without that flare on the black background while keeping it properly lit. This is taken in a cheap plastic light box and I've also tried with just a black paper sweep but can't take properly lit pictures on black without that glare ruining the effect.

You want to put the subject farther away from the sheet if you can. Also you can re-orient the sheet so it's all facing downward and doesn't catch the light. Gotta find the pic of the Erik Swinson setup as an example.

@pliant turtle has a clever technique that involves putting an iPad at a 45 degree angle in the background so that light pointed at it gets reflected away and not back at the camera.

I don’t think an iPad is a strict requirement 🙂 but generally a flat glossy/reflective black background at a 45 degree angle.

I get a lot of questions about how I take photos on a pure black background while still having a clearly defined silhouette on the miniature. I thought I’d show my relatively cheap set up (the lights and the camera aren’t cheap).

I use black foam board to create a cave behind the figure. I also angle down the background to reduce any reflection...
