Hi, all!
I'm working on a black dragon model for a friend. I'm having difficulties making the horns noticeably blacker than the scales... so I'm planning on buying a vantablack paint. I'm torn between black 2.0 and 3.0 from Culture Hustle. Does anyone have experience with either? Should my normal finish work fine? thanks in advance for any insight

Blue dragon model from LOTP. Gonna be doing the horns and nails in black 2.0

there is no darker black than a black placed near a lighter color. 😉

(Sorry, I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but most of the time, getting a special technical paint isn't the answer)

#

If you plan to varnish the piece, know that you will lose most of the black X.0 effect

#

(There was a video on internet comparing the blackness of some blacks, and varnish kills it because part of the special darkness comes from the very irregular shape of the surface it leaves on a microscopic scale. Which also makes it fairly scrap-sensitive.)

I don't have any experience with the Culture Hustle paints, other than hearsay. I don't know that I have seen anything painted with them, but I have heard them talked about before. Hearsay says the paint effect is easily destroyed, as Yan mentioned.. I'm inclined to believe it after my experiences with Molotow Chrome and getting mirror chrome finishes.

BUT, in my experience, Daler Rowney FW Ink in black comes out with a much blacker effect than any of the black minipaints I have.

#

I use it in comic-book style and it's great.

Yo! I own both. Mostly, they are insanely pigmented blacks. Like, you water it down forever and it keeps going strong. You can use a tiny tiny bit and it will still likely overpower whatever other pigment you put with it.
That, and the matte is almost.... scratchy? to the touch?
In addition, to get that real black black effect you may need more than one layer.
All that said, (and the prior comments are all correct!) it is a very nice black paint. I got it for other purposes but it is great for lots of things :3

I've used them and they are not very useful for miniature painting. They're also falsely advertised, they are a bit blacker than say just regular black primer, but the photos on their site are 100% fraudulent

#

The paint is incredibly gloopy, and thinning it makes it behave very strangely

#

And if you varnish it, or touch it, it instantly ruins it, because it's so hyper matte that just touching it lays the matte texture flat.

#

I wouldn't recommend it, and on principal, I don't recommend buying any of stewart simple's products, because he is a melodramatic fraud, that uses his one sided "feud" with another artist to sell trash products.

It is worth noting that I purchased mine a pretty long time ago, so redpiano's comments are probably correct!
It is very possible I am using a different formulation of the paint.

I think there are some options within the usual hobby brands but you might consider Golden SoFlat black. It’s my go-to black when I want great opacity. It won’t be as matte as black 2.0/3.0 but it’s pretty dang matte and doesn’t have the durability issues.

careful with the musou it's super delicate. The only application I can think of for it would be, base with musou, interference on top, then pour realistic water or something on top of it

#

that way it's protected by the resin or varnish so to speak
