Still trying to improve my basecoat consistency; can I get some feedback on my first of two layers here? Too thick, too watery… ?

here's a closeup

sry the lighting last night wasn't so great

#

I've primed in grey, and am putting on the black basecoat at the moment (was going to do two thin layers)

#

right now I've done the first of two, but I can't tell if I'm getting the consistency right

#

it's looking a bit uhh... splotchy - I'm not sure if that's normal for a first coat, or if I'm applying it wrong somehow

well I think it's a bit too thinned for a basecoat, probably? Unless you're using the army painter black or a low-pigment density paint, in which case it's just what the paint can do?

What brand black are you using? I've used a couple with surprisingly bad coverage and it takes a few layers

#

First layers can look splotchy like that, it'll improve after the second coat.

but I couldn't find a ton of people complaining about it online - at least not as much as some other paints

Black is a surprisingly fickle paint and personally I think there is a lot of variation in brands. I've tried Citadel, Reaper (Coal Black fwiw, not true black), Vallejo Game Color (old formula), Pro Acryl (also a Coal Black), and Jo Sonja ... and I like the Jo Sonja the most with Vallejo as a suitable runner up, but I also love Reaper Coal Black as a nice green-y black color. I have Kimera and Golden SoFlat on the shelf to try, but haven't yet.
