So I wanted to paint some fire tyranids specifically this style: https://www.instagram.com/p/CjTcn3KtkFz/
https://www.instagram.com/p/CjQ0tyKNg7P/

I have kimera paints
A .3mm airbrush
A couple cheap synthetic brushes
A wet palette
enough citadel paints to sink a ship
Makeup Brushes

How can I achieve this look?

I have good handeye coordination but I'm unsure how to get the scorched effect and the red skin layering so I did some drybrushing (as pictured in the photo) but I'm kind of unhappy with it.

Hello

#

Starting from white primer is mandatory, so good.

#

I'm totally not into dry brushing so I'll let others respond on how to use that
On my end, I would instead:
Paint yellow over most but not all of a part.
Over that, leaving a little of the yellow showing, paint a mix of yellow+orange.
Same thing with orange.
Same thing with red+orange.
Same thing with red.
In the rare remaining areas, samz thing with red oxide.
In a few chosen spots at the extremities, paint a mix of red oxide + black.

The logic :

  • where is heat is the strongest is where the lighter colour is
  • you NEED to have strong contrast on the global model for the overall effect to sell.
#

For your first execution, it won't be perfect because you won't blend much.
As time goes by, you will feel more and more confident with making the colours overlap one another, with seeing how you can "leave enough room" for each of the colours, and you will probably choose intermediate mixes I have not mentioned above to suit your style.

Oh, and always feel free to go back and re-apply some colour. The red, orange and yellow are very transparent, so it will help if you are very neat with the darker paints and the white.

I hope this helps.
