#OSLAlong Feb - Mar

I’m in as well 🥰
Green osl
Gunna hop in here if not just to watch peoples osl posts
Is it for OSL as in "object source lighting", which in 3D graphics design can just mean "there is a secondary light source" and it doesn't matter if it is in the scene or not,
versus "object source lighting" where the source of the light is in the scene (an object the mini is holding, a fire camp physically present on the mini's base or on the diorama, etc)?
for me the example above is a second light, which is fun to paint, but not "OSL" strictly speaking 😉 (in the scope of mini painting)
(sorry for being pedantic)
You can do more than one OSL source . Make it fun 😏
Just All fires everywhere
a character watching fireworks exploding all 2m away at the same time....?
Do it!
Bu5 different colors
Happy to join !
Let's go
I think I’m in for this one. But, that depends, can a mini who has just been zenithal’d be entered?
Sick! This would be my first paint along because I couldn’t figure out which one to join 😹
I shall save this mini for Feb!
Easy answer, all of them
Alas, I am but a slow painter.
Thats my goal to. Aiming for atleast one mini a month now that im trying to do more detailed paintjobs
I support this answer lol
That was my plan.. now look at where I am
Me in the PALS
Not sure If' I'll participate or follow along, but this is sweet
Hmmm let's see if i have a good one for this
I would like to try.
Found this in the wild:
That's super helpful!
I did an OSL mini for the black and white along. It would be fun to try one with colour.
I have a wee question, other than literally painting along, and posting progress pictures here, is there anything else i need to do to prep or finish my model?
(I couldn't find a "you want to join a paint-along' how to 😂 )
To prep. You can prime and share a picture of it ready 🙂
And just posting in the channel is fine to mention you want to join. Which reminds me I still need to get pics of mine
And to finish well just submit final pics and get points in the usual #request-points channel
That sounds perfect! Thank you very much!
If you ever have questions about the point system it's a pin in the request point channel. Make sure to mention the size if it's above 55mm
I’ve never posted here or tried OSL but I have this guy unpainted… a lamp AND candles… would love to put him in a lil scene. I’ll need all the pep talk I can get 😅
You got this we are here to help
Oh he’s a cool fig! Also that cart is awesome.
Yeah I’d like to get it all onto one base so the cart can be featured!
That’s a great idea!
oohh, I realised I have a great unpainted models for this if I just add some green stuff fire to the cocktail,
I think I'll do this lady for OSL along, green light from the lantern and maybe a red moonlight from the direction of the bird
Primed and ready to go (wheelbarrow in the background while I paint on a temp base)
The lantern is veeery delicate, might have been smarter to do sub assembly painting but then I wouldn’t know where the light would be coming from so 🤷🏼♀️
I feel you there, the fig i'm painting for this also has a lantern which i swear i've repaired like 5 times... that's why it's not painted yet 😹
Think I’ll do the flames on Bronte’s hammer for this one, since he’s queued up next anyway!
I should remember to do this. Have lots of magicians with magic effects
Boom see you tomorrow
Heck yeah! I’m so keen - I’ve been reading up on OSL methods and there seems to be a few ways to go, gotta work out how to tackle this thing… what are you folks going with, in terms of techniques?
Damn, this mini is PERFECT
Probably gonna use Inks and glaze
I tend to glaze/ airbrush stuff so going to base coat him in a color combo. Not sure yet either maybe navy blue/ purple for the shadows and like bright yellow/orange for the glow
And then glaze in the colors on top to build that contrast.
A desatured purple or blue on his back would probably be perfect as a contrast
I'm excited to see it 😍
Heck yeah I'm excited
The All out War stuff works with PALs right? Cause I got a rat ogre with a burning ball of magic in his hand
Technically no
Because you are getting points for AOW so can't double dip sorry
Ok no problem!
I’m excited to see what people do, too. OSL is probably my favorite extracurricular technique to do
I loved that one
So hot
Thanks...
hahaha, that sword was a huge pain to do...
I won’t flood this channel with WIPs if it doesn’t involve the OSL, but I had a “doctor appointment” this morning, so while I was away from my work desk, I went to the painting table. Bronte says hi.

I can’t wait to get home from work today to start on mine!
Thanks for sharing! I have no airbrush but from what I’ve read, and how I paint, I’ll prob end up with layering up to white and then glazing colour back in. Love the idea of your colour combo!
Of course! If you feel more comfortable you can always try to color block the color OSL by hand first.
That could be a good idea too, there are a lot of directions going on with the lamp and the candles. Just gotta go for it I guess!
Definitely as long as you can be consistent you can trick the viewer that it's valid 🙂
This will be my Oslalong mini, combining cellshading too...probably not for the best but let's try it anyway 😄
Well. Apparently my partner recycled my painting lamp, so we are definitely at a hold on painting 😭 hopefully I’ll be ordering in a new lamp tonight!
nooooo!!!
I already have these wips in progress from painting for funsies(just started this weekend), can I use one of them for this? Or does it have to be an unstarted mini?
Can only be primed. Not painted
Darn, don't think I have any fire/light source minis. Maybe I'll look around this weekend if I have time before work. Thanks for the reply though 🙂
Your light source could be many things, like moonlight coming from above
Or off scene fire light from a campfire
As Dad mentioned it can be from anything. It could even be a campfire that nots a part of the mini
Other options: could be colored lights / magic spells or a glowing weapon ( who said swords can't glow?!l
Damn it Chromium, beat me to it 🤣🤣🤣
Thinking I might do a glowy portal for the tentacle warlock, but I also found a little fire lizard guy in my DM box. Not sure which one to do 🤔
So those are fun!
Choices, choices. If you are unsure, flip a coin. Let fate decide. 😉
Ahh, I may have messed up. Is it okay if I do this one I under coated on Monday? Realised my idea for it would be better for this pal. Is it okay if I still use it? (I have back ups, but keen to do this one)
Technically Monday was pretty of January so it wouldn't count unless you started over 😦
I think I will do the bad day mini for this... I am going so deep into this one that I don't know if I am just making myself fail
We won't let you fail . We got you
what's your plan? haha... there are so many things I want to do in this one.
Like for my mini?
no, so I wont fail haha
Airbrush my OSL plan out.
Oh. Well. We have a few things.
1- negative points every time you panic 🤣
Jk!
Be supportive.
Send you happy thoughts and praise.

I am doing a base with actual clay bricks that I need to roughen up, cut and lay down in herringbone pattern ( which I might scrap) then I am painting or attempting to paint a background of a dungeon, something I have never done. and on top, I want to make a lamp that is what is emitting the light in the shape of a skull
I just burnt my fingers on my sandwich.. and yeeted the mayonnaise at the fridge and watched it bounce and hit me in the leg. So I don't know if this makes anything better or worse 🤣
Oh this would be fun! I suggest sketching.out the idea before hand
what kind of sandwich?
The idea is sketched out...
Home.made bread with some Italian cured meats. Cheese. Mayo. Pickle. Mustard lettuce and tomato
I just don't know if I can cut the bricks precisley
yummy
Hmm could you not make a giant " brick" and cut it up individually
Like a cookie cutter from above?
I tried... it didn't look good. also tried sculpting it, didn't look the way I wanted it to look
Can you print bricks?
got the bricks and they look really nice but they are too smooth so I just need to chip them
Ah fair
Don't have a printer... hahaha, that is my next purchase, if I had a printer I would do a ton of stuff since I know how to model fairly decently
Ah. Well if you are worried and can sculpt the bricks I don't mind printing them
Although i might be far idk I'm in Canada
Thanks, I appreciate it! The bricks I got will work nice, also like how they break, I need to make a few broken ones so dirty up the dungeon
Perfect
need to find some sand or something like that to show dirt
is this one
I am also separating every element from the base which is not fast
This is going to look very neat
ok, let's try to airbrush this magic this week-end.
The lamp is finally here! I can get started now!
Painting her for osl along
I haven't painted osl in ages, how hard will a dual light source be? X3
I started on this the other day and proceeded to break the mini’s lantern pole in several places 😤
I ended up whittling some toothpicks down to make a new pole. Plus side is I can get the lantern on a better angle for lighting the guy’s face. Downside… re-priming!
It would be interesting to see how you do it
Nice fix, though
Thinking green flame, and pale blue blade, but for rn, she's a bit on the back burner
That is an interesting idea. Yeah, there’s plenty of time for the PAL
Finished for today. I’m doing a blue flame from the hammer in his right hand for the OSL, and I’m now curious how the blue glazes will interact with apron.
Ah i hate when minis are so fragile 😭 I feel your pain, I'm being so careful with the raven on mine, because i've broken him off so many times already
HOT 🔥
It felt difficult to do cell shading and osl on the same minis. If you have any advice to improve the osl effect, I will gladly use it (on the next ones probably).
Matt varnish tomorrow... to improve the cellshaded effect.
I don't know if random little curved black lines on the magic might of helped? Or maybe white lines
Anything I can do to improve the flames? I’m not sure I’m satisfied with them. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
I believe normally with flames the hottest points are the lightest colors ( yellow/ white) and darker colors are the ones away from the source. So the tips should be a dark blue not white
Thanks, @versed belfry You’re right. I imagine a mind tone glaze would back it up enough?
I'd say so 😊
Thanks!
Once that’s done, it’ll be time to undo all the work on the front with a blue glow! 😂
Oh dang I hope it goes well.
A bit better?
Ooo yes
Thanks for your help! 🍻
anytime
I guess I lied about spamming this channel with WIPs. Apologies.
Nothing wrong with that. This is why the channels are here for
I'll try that this evening, might be nice.
Hell yes
A little bit of progress. Ignore the ink mess on the bottom
This was fun. Wasn’t entirely sure how to handle the flame reflections on the arm bracer, so I treated it like NMM cylinders. I’m not sure if it’s correct, so any critique, tips, advice would be much appreciated.
First WIP from me… Just starting to emerge from the ‘absolute mess’ stage. Decided to highlight towards white first and then I’ll glaze in the warmer tones later. That’s the plan, anyway!
Here is my final result for this OSL+ cell shading personal challenge, thanks for your advice!
Remind me not to blackline before making the OSL next time 😂
Nice work!
Calling him done
I think for a first attempt at OSL, I’m happy! I’m going to call him done!
Omg didn’t realize this had started lol
Boro
Playing with some airbrush OSL
Two source OSL is rough but figured I’d try it
Lol I need some better lighting for those guys
Ooh nice! I’m also trying two sources and it’s tricky for sure. These are coming along nicely!
So I've never actually done osl before, does this seem good so far? My light will be a glowy portal underneath the tentacles (i'm using a brush btw)
So far so good yes
Any suggestions on where to go from here? At the moment I have just been trying to make the transition from green to purple smoother. But it still feels like something is missing 😕
Okay so I put it in greyscale. I think to really sell the effect.of the OSL you'd want to have the top of the tentacles a lot darker.
Okay thanks 😊 that's a neat tactic for figuring out where you are
I've been trying to remember to do that so I can judge where I'm at 😅
But I think I shared my greyscale of my blacksmith up above. ( unless it was in a different channel)
You might have, I'm really bad at looking at backlogged messages lol I don't tend to scroll more than 20 or so up
Either way here it is just by comparaison
But yours would be upside down 🤣
For obvious reasons
I dare say these horrors beyond mortal comprehension are coming right along 😋
Gonna call this done so I can move on to other things lol. Decided not to paint the caster that came with the tentacles since I just wasn't really feeling her vibe ya'know?
(Also not sure how to take a picture of this so that the osl transition looks as smooth as it does irl, had to use the back of my college diploma as the base since I didn't have anything else flat and black 😅)
Took a pic of the tentacles up close in normal light so you can see the osl a bit better
Didn't have space for the circle on my usual finished projects shelf so had to make due with limited space on the backup project shelf
Well, that may explain the problems with the mail recently
That looks awesome!!!!
Tentacles van...! ❤️
Getting close with this guy, the candles are a mess because I wrestled for ages trying to paint in the light they’re casting on each other. Giving up on that now, instead they’ll just light themselves up 😂🫠
Also this is a hand sculpted metal mini and the lantern is so lumpy, it’s been a challenge
This looks great so far.
Thank you! Definitely taking me well outside my comfort zone but I’m enjoying the process
It's good to hear I love OSL and OSL like vibes on minis so it makes me happy to see more
Hand painted OSL 🔥
my entry in osl along, his sword will be in flames!
Just for clarification, is it possible to combine the OSL Along with #abra-capaint-your-heart-off-bruh ?
Sorry but no
You can only submit each mini for 1 event or PAL. Otherwise it's kind of cheating and defeating the purpose
Makes absolute sense, was not sure since I was only aware of "only one PAL". Thanks for the clarification 🙂
No worries 🙂
Wowwwww
Ended up switching to a different mini i had laying around primed. But had fun using a fluorescent paint through the airbrush
Where did we land on does the object that casting the light have to be on the mini or not? I read it so long ago, I don't remember
It does not have to be there.
Awesome, thanks!
Calling him done! I need photos from other angles to better show his wheelbarrow, but I’m really pleased with how this turned out for a brush-only first-time OSL paint. Most of all, I’m so happy to have finished a model within a reasonable time frame! Hooray for paint alongs!
He looks amazing great job
Thank you!
Damn that looks amazing
Hey thanks a lot! I definitely rushed the base to get it out the door 😅
One more from another angle
You nailed it 👌🏻
Gonna do a frog fishin' at night for this one.
now that Feb is almost done I can think about what model I want to do for this...
Thinking of fixing this one and starting it again...
dope!
I was upset when she broke, but I think it's a good opportunity to make her much much cooler and really apply the new knowledge I've obtained since I started her like 3 years ago
I was going to use this guy for something else but I think I’ll try for some OSL from the sword for this instead 🙂
Slowly moving along
Wow! I’m loving the lighting transition on the ogre/troll head
Got a little bit of paint on it. No OSL yet but it’ll come lol
It has been decided
That base sucks though, no clue if I should do something about it or just make it black
Nice
aaaaand done. Is it perfect? Nope, but I still like it lol.
Phwoar!!! Now THAT’S a glow!
Finally fixed and ready to go
Airbrushing, and oils done today. Oil painting feels like cheating for how good it looks for such little effort
I tried.
She's so cute! It's a great job
Basic basing weeee
Shading has all gone wrong. Glaze just turned everything solid charcoal grey. Time for a fresh pass and maybe a pant purchase trip
*Paint purchase. I WFH, I don't wear pants
I was painting this for the NMM-along, but honestly it feels like it makes more sense here. Hope you like it 🙂
needs a layer of ultramatte though, some glare in places.
It’s insanely amazing
thanks!
fun anecdote:
the last mini I painted OSL on was this Halgrim I painted last year. Until just now when I placed them side by side in the display case I was was convinced they looked similar since I'd used roughly the same paints, roughly the same technique and painted them at about the same pace.
rofl, they look nothing alike 😂
Lmao 😂
That’s a great NMm reference photo for something on working on now good timing you posted that lol
I can't really say why the vampire looks like it's got so much more glow... sure, more red and more space for light falloff on the mini makes the bonfire fire look more alive... but... I dunno... the vampire's OSL looks like it's glowing even in real life
halgrim?
(the skeleton)
it's the quickest NMM you'll ever do. Basically. it's 95% just stippled pure glacial blue over bluegreen base coat
the bluegreen is a mixture of talassar blue, warplightning green and wyldwood contrast paint painted sloppily over a zenithal prime. think I used something like payne's grey ink or watered down black to add the darkest spots
because the armor looks so beat up, the un-evenness of the stippled dots just looks like dents in the armor or at least that's the intent
#fucksmoothness 😂
Even the skin has more moonlight glow
Omg what. I need to try I’m working on a weapon that’s spear tipped like that and it’s kicking my ass lol
ironically, also glacial blue 😄
Lolol apparently that’s a must have color
well, tbh, it's a great color for mixing cold highlights
I'd say 80% of the highlights I paint are mixing ice yellow or glacial blue into the midtone 😂
and probably 80% ice yellow, 20% glacial blue of that split
Ugh ice yellow is a STAPLE
glacial blue is like the cold ice yellow ;D
I have pro acryls pale yellow which is similar and their new white blue is nice but a little too white may have to pickup glacial blue lol
whiteblue sounds very much what glacial blue is
the glacial blue might be a smidgeon more blue but honestly I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse
I just use this because I saw it in some Vince Venturella video 3 years ago and it's served me well enough that I haven't tried anything else
then... you probably have it
that's funny, then that's probably at least as good as the dropped I have
Lol probably made what he wanted lol
yeah
it's like the "Dark Magenta" really is kimera magenta (aka quadrablahabquinone magenta)
because, from I've heard, the "magenta" in the pro acryl line is not a great magenta
Lolol yes that’s what I’ve heard but can’t confirm yet I’m supposed to be getting kimeras this week! Super excited
Yeah it has a lot of white in it lol
that magenta is beautiful with skin tones or that glacial blue mixed in btw
(the kimera one)
glacial blue gives you a really cold popping highlight for magenta while adding a skintone (or sunny skintone) gives you a really nice warm lush highlight
https://www.instagram.com/p/ChSY4lZgqdL/ <--- glacial blue in the magenta
https://www.instagram.com/p/CnzdxdNtqJJ/ <--- sunny skin tone in the magenta
@plain hearth is the pale yellow also from the Vince V line btw?
Damn that’s beautiful
ah, it is not.
Nope that was part of their original
But it’s supposed to be their version of ice yellow supposedly
sure looks like it
Lol I use both a lot, or am starting to
@rain grail both of these are phenomenal!
Finally hitting some stride on froggy
Ohf only 10 ish days left 🥴
i do verdigris and ice yellow, kinda same thing with cold blue and yellow for highlights giving them greenish tint which i like a lot
interesting! I've had a verdigris I've bought for this use several years ago since I figured a pastel green like that could work but I'm not sure I've ever ended up using it.
it is one of my favourite colours for nmm, i use prussian blue/dark sea blue, then verdigris and then ice yellow + dead white for flare
gives nice bluish tone and rather easy to blend
I started this guy too early to get points for this PAL but I’m attempting glowing green slime OSL on this duder. I need to push it more but I’m happy with the genera direction.
Looking really great!
thanks!
Theme of this PAL - "I'm gonna push it further"
lol I feel like every mini painting c+c response is just "push the contrast". I feel like you could literally paint a mini matte black and gloss white with no blends and someone would say "push the contrast"
That's because almost everyone starts off painting with very low contrast and it doesn't look great

push the contrast
I always do homie
Nope
bro
@fossil nexus Maaaaaybe.. you could try thinning that paint hmm? that would be greaaaat...
in addition to pushing that contrast, I mean
Should I go ahead and come in o Saturday?
Yeah we've lost some people and have some extra contrast to push
Pushing it, but man oh man lighting makes it look good or terrible
It's froggy time!
Oh many work got so busy I don't think I'll finish in time
imma try to get some painting time in tho
I overdid the final highlight, and the parts with mixed metallics and colors are bad, but I suppose it's okay for a first time osl without airbrush
