Face highlights

Can anyone give me some tips on this? Everytime I've tried doing face highlights, they end up looking like streaked warpaint.
Does my paint need to be on the drier side?

The paint doesn't have to be dry. Can you give photo examples of what you have tried?

If you zoom in, you can see the line

You're going from an extremely dark colour to an extremely light colour. Maybe add some transition colours in between?
