I've never used an airbrush before but I've been given the ok to buy one and have it be a present from the kids. I wanted to grab one primarily for priming but also for putting on base layers and some larger models (Screaming Bell, etc.). I'm currently looking at this kit on Amazon Canada which seems to fit what others have been suggesting for a beginner:

What are some of the other 'essentials' for a beginner airbrush? Obviously a primer like Vallejo Surface Black/White. I'll be using it in a basement with no ability to spray near a window for a booth vent so a respirator seems critical too. Watching some of the Hobby Cheating videos Vincey V is saying Airbrush Thinner & Flow Improver. Anything else that the helpful folks here recommend?

You'll want a sprayout pot like this (throw the other tools out, they're awful)

#

I would recommend Badger Stynylrez, AK3rd Gen, or Molotow over Vallejo as a primer

#

I personally eschew airbrush thinner/cleaner/flow aid for just a diluted windex

Thanks for the quick response! I'll ad this to the list. I think my local(ish) store has AK

Dental brush picks for cleaning instead of those brushes that go with a lot of kits (those can be kinda rough on the airbrush)

Qtips. If you can get the tiny/pointy tips too that's good but not essential.

And some sewing machine oil for maintenance.

Vallejo primer doesn’t clog the airbrush but it doesn’t stick to model too well. I always varnish after it because if not it will chip (yes even after cleaning the model with soapy water). Badger sticks like there is no tomorrow and is very matte love it but it clogs the airbrush so much, specially a .3mm nozzle. Get the cleaning pot that was recommended as it doubles as a stand and comes with those cleaning tools which you will need if you use badger stynylrez. Don’t use the wrench to tighten your nozzle if you take it out, they break easily just tighten it with your fingers as much as you can, I’ve never broken a nozzle since I stopped using the wrench and since they have a o-ring I get no air leaks

Also get a spare needle/nozzle set, being your first airbrush you will most likely bend the tip or ruin your nozzle, not saying you’re careless but it happens to everyone. I like this one for chinese airbrushes:

Q-tips (without plastic stems) and interdental tooth brushes. Also have a look on youtube about making your own airbrush cleaner. For the price of 200ml of 'branded' cleaner you can make about 5l of homebrew and it works just as well.
