I assume if someone is listed they helped the mapper in some way and deserve credit

It used to be that one person can only be in one section. I generally use this order and put them in the highest "tier":
author > contributor > special thanks > tester
and then I add context in the comment box if needed

I believe that is still the case, just not with placeholders.
I plan on restricting those as well to avoid issues when they get merged to proper user accounts on map approval

i would think more accurate data for historical purposes is a reason but it seems the decision has been made
