#Character Card Idea

Well - my first thought is certainly...I don't understand this from an IC RP concept. How would my character, who isn't pulling up your character card, know all these things about your character?

I mean wouldn't you find it a bit strange if a new character ambled up to Leff and started talking to them like all their history was known?

I already find it hard to not mention character's names if we haven't been introduced just because it can feel a little...redundant since their character's name is there in the window.

I think that issue has been pretty thoroughly discussed in both #game-chatter and in #roleplaying. But the shortest good response on it, is here: #roleplaying message - but in short, it gives the player playing the character an orientation towards a character. Is this character being played by a griefer? Or is this a well-thought out developed character. But, also similarly to a wiki, it’s a place for me (player) to curate information about my character. What you (player/character) choose to do with that information (if you even care at all about it), is a different issue.

Something not-unlike this question actually came up last night during a side discussion at Ghastly Guts.
In theory, because it's a game, everybody present was at least nominally comfortable with the expectation that guts would be flipped at them, but there were still very clear delineations among characters that know each other well. If you don't interact with a character in-game much you can't really be sure how they're going to react to you doing something like flicking greasy guts at them, which causes a bit of a chilling effect.
So something like this (I believe the original pitch was for an addition to the PROFILE verb?) would be more akin to a D&D GM sliding you a note to provide information your character should know that you as the player don't or that you as the player could use OOC as a hook to lead into interaction.
An Aelotoi empath/cleric could include a little note in their card that trying to tip them with gems is going to make them angry, that's something that a character in-game could reasonably assume of a stranger and gives you a moment to prepare for potential outcomes of your actions instead of being caught off guard and having to respond on the fly.
More professional improv, less mad libs.

I would still love something in game with the profile verb. I think Wyrom said he was open to it, but wasn’t sure it was going to get any movement. Also, that’s really interesting about Ghastly Guts and characters. The profile idea (at least in my brain), was a bit like: if you spend 5 minutes with my character, this is what you would know about me…

The wiki is exactly for this sort of stuff.

Thanks Naos — I don’t want to learn to update and modify the wiki; and I don’t particularly want it on outfacing greater web. I don’t plan on using them, but I’m glad they exist! I do enjoy looking at other character wikis. Does this mean that using the forums this way from your perspective is a no go?

I think using the wiki is orders of magnitude better for this purpose. I don't really understand how you would get a satisfactory result on Discord, especially given that it'd require people to potentially create a Discord account and join the server and go through the setup process, all to just read it. That is the opposite of accessibility imho. I don't really understand the apprehension about the publicly available part at all. I do understand not wanting to learn something new, even if it's extremely simple.

I get that. But the same could be said about the decision to move forums to discord. At some point, GS has decided that discord is the appropriate place for player/player interactions, player/GM interactions, and in game announcements. — the public thing is admittedly a personal anxiety I have. Probably not worth basing anything around (you can still google my character name and find my real first name from a PC post like 15 years ago, for example). It stresses me out.

Us (the GS GM staff) falling back to Discord to fill the gap of losing the official forums (something entirely out of our local control) is making the best out of a difficult situation with the tools and means we have available. I don't actually think it's great, but it's something.

I get the anxiety of the unforgetting internet. That's a real shame.

Honestly, I know it’s not ideal, but I really like it. Discord has given me a community of players to interact with, in addition to the community of characters in the game. I hope the forums, to the extent they exist here, help foster that community in great ways that keep this game thriving. Thanks for engaging. I appreciate it.

Turns out the roleplaying forum already has a “Character History” tag.

there's a template on the wiki. there's no real learning involved. fill in the blanks, and if it doesn't look right, a mod or someone knowledgeable will fix it

Sorry, the wiki is not for me. Glad others enjoy it though.
