I haven't kept up with the new lore they have but my understanding is that it's not just remnant. It's "agony". Dying in extremely painful ways makes your spirit stronger and causes it to seep into everything around you

It has to be exceptional for it to work, that's why not everyone becomes a zombie or ghost of some kind
