I agree but looking at what can be found in for instance the craigh it all has awkward progression unlocks which, if added to the loot pool, might cause similair hoarding problem... for instance you could add infernal suevite but it's locked behind the mythril pick which would either require a mech boss kill trigger to have it added or be a skip in progression...
They don't need chest loot just to add loot to crates

most crates exist to provide the chest loot of their area plus small loot
that would be in line with the hallowed one
I feel like sunken crates could use prism shards, astral crates could use stardust, and crag crates could use scorched bone. That's all they need, it doesn't need to be something good, just something to make them unique is enough imo
the essences should really be in crates instead, since thats wat vanilla does with souls of light n night, crystal shards and the two evil hardmode mats

i was thinking about something mentioned earlier, and it was said that astral and cryo were kept out of the shimmer chain so people couldn't skip the content
i was thinking, if that is the case, then similarly to how demonite/crimtane is kept out, that maybe cryo should drop some of its ore like how EoC or Mechs drop hallowed and evil ores. also think that if calamity is going to include aerialite in the shimmer chain then hellstone should probably be added too

I think cryo dropping ore is a solid idea, would remove the need for cryo slimes as well. Can't make it too much though or mining becomes suboptimal and we further enforce boss rush

im honestly surprised this is a thing at the slightest, because it's more exception than rule that people cherrypicked
here's things they don't give you:

- soul of flight
- antlion mandible
- flinx fur
- pixie dust
- unicorn horn
- light shard
- rotten chunk
- worm tooth
- vertebra
- dark shard
- shark fin
- jungle spores
- stinger
- vine
there's an overwhelming amount of biome-exclusive materials that never make it to a crate
not mentioning neither hellstone nor chlorophyte are there and yet there are somehow expectations of scoria or suevite or something
what exactly is the something people ask that's actually substance and not just filler to make it look maybe a little nicer
you can pat your back that prism shard exists in a sunken sea crate then turn back to face the reality that it takes on average 21 crates to get the prism shards to make a deific amulet when otherwise 1 normal trip to the sunken sea will give you more prisms than you ever need in your playthrough for 5 players because it's just that abundant
or scorched bones when it is fully replenishable at ease in 2.1 due to fertilizer compatibility and ability to craft fertilizer with scorched bones, leaving it the most efficient option so long as the player has... poo (well, at least this one makes sense)
(also with chlorophyte, luminite is farmable and shimmers into it so it still has a renewable alternative source)

my point im tryna make is that some items dont have normal drops in normal ways, and people who are just looking for the item itself might not know that
(elysian aegis/wings only get a brief mention in the summoning item, the calclone twins drop weapons, etc etc)
my suggestion (if i can phrase it) is to provide a mention (in lore somehow) of what it comes from
like havocs breath mentioning it being repurposed from the construct
(not directly, but better phrased)
or the wings saying something about them and hallow stuffs
elysian aegis and wings are going to be obtainable in every biome next update btw

Can you explain why the set bonus makes normal playthroughs worse? Barely anyone used it pre-cooldown fix, and with the fix there's no point intentionally using it outside of skyblock or some other challenge

Before the thanksgiving patch the cooldown on the set bonus didn't work, so every ore you mined would have a chance of duping
There was always meant to be a 3-6 second cooldown after an ore was duped, it just didn't work

It's just a less efficient method of getting ores than pretty much anything else, especially after the cooldown fix
difficulty of acquisition + calamity boosting default mining speed to such a degree the difference is not worth it

personal feedback: i dont mind another mining set or even a building set but having marnite exist (i think that gives a similar bonus) and reaver not super long after is extremely unhealthy for it imo
i wouldnt mind a post ml mining set instead of reaver, and marnite being purely building, but dont take that as advice or gospel, just my personal opinion

Lead is straight up the best armor set until you beat skeletron for the cobalt shield
copper armor is also really good on fast weapons

armor has a mining set bonus but it's nigh unimportant when you have all the mining accessories which maxes out your mining speed
so yeah, throw in the dupe as a nice bonus
That's the thing, it's a nice bonus with significant downsides (defense, damage, utility) in a normal playthrough, it's nowhere near this ubiquitous OP armor that is ruining playthroughs
What I meant when I said no one is using it in a normal playthrough is no one is doing what I did in skyblock of placing down a bunch of ores just to break them and repeat to "farm" ores, or at least it would be pointless to do it after the cooldown was fixed

Plus Onyx Excavator is literally right there, if anything mining related needs a nerf it's that thing
Most of the discussion in Dev was around it exponentially scaling and the ability to completely avoid risky mining areas like the abyss after you get a single ore. Most of those issues are fixed with the cool down being properly set so I can bring up the topic again with those that were more passionate about removing it than I am. That being said, in order to make it not invalidate normal mining it was/is made so tedious it's only useful in niche challenge runs, which begs the question why exist at all. At the point it only exists for self restricted playthroughs it would be better to alter the set bonus to be more unique. In Dev we had discussions around the set bonus being the ability to throw a sticky dynamite every x amount of time for free, or the ability to cleave blocks when mining, etc. I feel something like this would be more unique, useful, and not present balancing issues that require it being delegated to game breaking or useless
Regardless, mining armor is still unchanged in Dev and it's all just discussions atm. Discussions that aren't a huge priority with SSO stuff being the focus, so if it does get changed it may be a decent bit in the future.
It's still useful in normal playthroughs, just not in the same way it's useful in challenge runs. In a normal playthrough you get some bonus ore when you're out mining normally, you still benefit from the armor just less so than someone in a challenge run where that's the only way to get certain ores
if the discussion around it is why does the effect exist at all and the team wants to replace it, you could always move the ore duping effect to something nobody ever uses like spelunker amulet or smthn

We generally don't plan to support special seeds due to 1.4.5 having so many combinations of them. But if it isn't beyond my skill level I will personally add calamity skyblock support in any way needed

TLDR is that the changes bring crates more in line with what vanilla crates are for, which is renewable chest loot. Also, all tier-locked stuff was removed as vanilla also never has tier locked stuff directly in crates (closest there is is the lockboxes)

For the record, free golden rod is going to be removed and reaver shark reverted to vanilla (pre boss hellstone is still possible just not this way)
it's not useless, mining armor still gives a ton of mining speed and makes you glow, both of which are very useful
and the duping still works, it's just more like once per vein
