To introduce a person or a thing, you can use both/either: Das/Dies ist meine Mutter. Das/Dies ist mein Handy. Das/Dies sind meine Schuhe. In practice, "das" is used far more often than "dies", at least in spoken German, "das" is used pretty much indiscriminately where you'd use "this/that" in English. :)
