Zuständigkeit vs Gerichtsbarkeit

This is a pretty specialized question, but I've come across these two terms and they seem to both refer to the jurisdiction/authority each government body has, at least in Germany (don't know if they're used in other German-speaking countries too), but either way they're more than a little confusing when it comes to the boundaries between the two terms. Some illustrative examples and equivalents in English (naturally pertaining to the law in English-speaking countries) would be much appreciated.

I'm coming from totally left-field here (but interested considering that I did medieval law translations and actually used the term Gerichtsbarkeit to make sense transcultaturally and transhistorically), but: der Unterschied sollte sehr deutlich sein? Die Zuständigkeitkeit ist der Bereich, in dem Institution X eben...naja, zuständig ist. Gerichtsbarkeit ist aber spezifisch juristisch und vollkommen allgemein. Mehr noch, es sagt qua Wortherkunft: "Es ist möglich, Fall X vor Gericht zu bringen"

Der Rest ist eigentlich von den Quellen abhängig. (So, really, maybe you should give your examples...)
