I took a course from another institution which offered also courses over Zoom. I think self-study depends on your personal learning style. Personally I found being in a course to be helpful. Many language schools offer the A1 course so you can compare and contrast

I passed Goethe A1 exam with 83% and i Never paid for a course. I just watched YouTube videos and practices questions and increase your vocabulary and Duolingo lessons

Even if you feel like you might need help, make sure to take into consideration paying for a tutor instead of a course. For some people, a tutor is better value for money.

Although you can learn any level by yourself without paying money.
