I know that Du is nominative and Dir is dative case but even so, I am still confused to what nominative and dative are.

Nominative Case: The Subject preforming a verb
Beispiel: "Ich gab meinem Hund einen Knochen."

Accusative Case: The object the verb is being preformed with (a.k.a. the Direct Object)
Beispiel: "Ich gab meinem Hund einen Knochen."

Dative Case: The object the verb is being preformed to / for (a.k.a. the Indirect Object)
Beispiel: "Ich gab meinem Hund einen Knochen."

Genitive Case: uhhhh yeah something to do with possession of objects but it doesn't make sense to me as of now lol.

Subject - Conjugated Verb - Dative Article & Noun - Accusative Article & Noun.

Please note that Boomite's explanation only applies to verbs with two objects, such as geben. There are other rules for accusative and dative that you also need to learn. For example, prepositions is a whole big topic of its own.
