I want to phrase it like “ich habe keine Ahnung, ob ich eine Grundnote bei den Prüfungen brauche”, but I’m not sure it’s a correct translation.

this works, but if you are really really worried about clarity you could add "Mindestnote" 'least grade' or 'least possible grade'.
I think most would understand you, but the technical word for minimum would be minimale or "mindest"

it's a bit like saying "ground note" or "base note" in English. It makes sense but might not be immediately clear
