but the usa have very annoying tax laws which give a hard time to other countries when you live abroad so they might need it if you're american, i dunno
yeah they needed my US one because of US tax stuff afaik
https://www.bankaustria.at/privatkunden-konto-und-karten-student-week.jsp?ucid=PPN-4205-20021001-2020_06_BA_Sonstige_Studenten_N_200k MC_N-Studium.at 90 euros for students opening an account in austria, as far as I can tell no nasty conditions or consequences
are you about to acquire a second bank account henk?
The Giro 30 account with Sparkasse is free
and I already got the 30 euros with sprakassa too
@deep vessel baby, yes, and im gonna use it to buy steak dinner for us once then never again
wait sparkasse gives you 30 euros?
is it just a promotion for opening a new account as a student?
yep
shame, was hoping id just get it in my current account lmao
I'm not American so maybe that's why idk
And yeah I know about the Finanzamt I went there right after the Anmeldung
I'll have to wait a bit till the Finanzamt gets it
my Hausarzt is closed this week
@humble bough Hat er nicht Vertretung?
Hi with the DB tickets if I have a month one from the 1st Sept to 30th, can I use it on the 30th too? Or
@bronze basin Meine ĂŒbliche Ărztin praktiziert allein. Es gibt nur sie und ihre Krankenschwester/Rezeptionistin.
@glad current ye
Oo okay ty
@fleet pelican i actually have to open a new account since i moved to a diff city, how would I receive the 25 or so euros? should I bring my student ID to the appointment?
It'll be another Giro30 account
are you in austria
no DE
i cant help you there then bud, you might wanna do your own research
alright, thanks anyway
Are cinema movies all dubbed in germany?
yes. In big cities there may be a cinema that shows movies in their original language once a week, but 99.9% yes
even smaller cities often have cinemas that'll have once-a-week OVmU showings -- I know Potsdam and Brandenburg an der Havel both have showings like that at their theaters occasionally
in a properly big city you're more likely to have a cinema or a few that have, like, FREQUENT OVmU showings
I know of several in Berlin, including one that just straight up does OV and OVmEngU
though I've only seen OV with English subtitles for when they showed Parasite
probably because OV for parasite is korean
yea in zĂŒrich I have no issues at all finding english-lanugage movies (though most of the time theyâll be dual-subbed in german and french because of course they are), back home no chance
maybe once, on release weekend or so
(though most of the time theyâll be dual-subbed in german and french because of course they are)
@foggy prism is there any room left for the film on the screen?
also why not italian too, that's racist
and finally a more serious question, do you guys also dub films into swiss german or are they mostly subbed? And what happens with films that are originally in (non-swiss) german?
do you guys also dub films into swiss german
never encountered a movie with swiss german speaking that wasnât a swiss production
or are they mostly subbed
if the movie is in german, it wonât be subbed. if itâs not in german, we use the german dub
standard german is considered the official language of german speaking switzerland and people are expected to be able to understand it, regardless of whether they like it
What a dumb thing to do đ«
which one?
why would that be dumb?
i mean, it would probably be best since they're terrible at it
Lots of humor and meaning is lost when translating
but americans dub anime, so... đ
you realise subtitles are translations too, and thus any meaning that gets lost in dubs can also get lost in subs? The only meaningful difference is that people who speak the original language can ignore the subs (or, like in my case, get frequently angry at them)
netflix? ÂŻ_(ă)_/ÂŻ
How do I watch tenet on netflix
ok good point, blockbusters aren't immediately available on netflix
I'll just go to another country to watch I english lmao
I don't have anything against german I just don't like dubbed media in all its forms
but have you looked around enough? As was mentioned, there are theatres that will offer english films everywhere but in remote or small places
Not in my city
too bad
ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
don't get me wrong i too avoid dubbed media like the plague when i can
but ig i'm also basically immune to hype, i don't care if i have to watch a film later on than when it's out
the other option is piracy but I am not officially advocating that
I've heard mixed reviews of Tenet tbh I don't think it's worth going to the theater for but that's me lol
Hello is there a webpage or smthing for push TAN ? It wonât function in my jailbroken iPhone and my rooted android device
And I need to use, so yeah, is there an alternative such as a webpage or something ?
FYI push tan is the sparkasse app, I donât check this server much pls @me if u wanna reply
I think their only option these days is either mobile app or you can purchase a machine from them that generates them
they used to send you tans in the mail but they stopped doing that
Guys i want to ask about studying master's in germany how much does it cost ( iam not from eu)?
public universities in Germany don't charge tuition.
That said there is a semester fee, varies from uni to uni but usually around 300-500⏠a semester, and that fee INCLUDES a semester ticket for transportation so that you can use all public transportation during your enrollment.
Housing and where you live during that time is really up to you and your own finances. There are inexpensive student dorms, but you still have to pay for them.
If you intend to get a student visa for your time studying, check out this website. https://www.studying-in-germany.org/german-student-visa/
Thank you jim
(except some states such as Baden-WĂŒrttemberg which do charge (a still relatively small) tuition for international students
^ bonn too now đ©
What's the differance
Like spar ticket
Because at the machines u press n ticket prints out its 14.80
Online can be 13.40
the spar-ticket is the saver price. that means that if you miss your train you'll have to buy a new ticket. whereas normally your ticket is valid for all equal and lower category of train at any time throughout the day for the same departure and destination location
Basically normally when you by a ticket you're buying the overall transport from place A to place B on that given day, any other details such as connections, general route between the given A and B, and what time you travel is up to you.
When you buy a spar-preis ticket it works like a more traditional train ticket where you're explicitly buying a ticket for that exact train at that exact time on that exact route.
Do note however that seat reservations on a nomral (flexi) ticket are only for that specific train at that specific time. I.e. if you buy a flexi ticket and reserve a seat for the 9.15 to Frankfurt via Mannheim then if you take the 9.15 to Frankfurt via Heidelberg or the 10.15 to frankfurt via Mannheim you'd need to pay for a new seat reservation if you'd like to reserve a specific seat
zĂ€nk jĂŒ fĂŒr trĂ€velling vif Deutsche Bahn

Ahh okay ty
I'll get saving one then since I always get the 14 08 train
Since the one before is when I finish school lol
What of my trains cancelled though?
Do I need new ticket
Or would it be able to be used on next
@deep vessel is this (= the fact that it's valid throughout the day) only for niedersachsen or everywhere, as far as you know?
Niedersachsen đ
Is lĂŒĂ an actual word?
Because theres a sign saying lĂŒĂwald
At my train station
And Ik Wald is forest
no
it's a place name, it doesn't have to make sense
it probably had a meaning centuries ago
everything deutsche bahn
Ahh ok
but pay attention to the note that it only applies to equal and lesser tickets. E.g. you can take the Sbahn on an ICE ticket but you can't take an ICE on an Sbahn ticket. your actual a4 ticket will tell you which trains it's valid for though
Yeah both my trains are on metronom
Just 15 mins each way
Just because my months ticket is ending today
So I buy a week ticket next week
So I'll need just 2 tickets for tomorrow n friday
Then a weeks since I have a 2 week break :D
What are some good clothes websites in Germany? In the UK we have boohoo(Germany is 6⏠delivery >.>) , "I saw it first" etc
6 euro delivery isn't that bad
h&m germany standard delivery is 5 euro, and 7 euro for express to provide a comparison
True was just looking at hm
I have one like 5 mins away from me lol
But I dont wanna carry around a basket with me if I wanna look around >.>
Can I buy my train ticket through the db app? Is it a barcode on my phone or I have to print it out?
it's a qr code
and yes you can but it depends on your local railway company
best app i could find for my area was rheinbahn's
the db one sucks
My area is niedersachsen
N trains metronom
And ty I used to use phone tickets back in England as a QR code which is much easier than rummaging around to find ticket >.>
what applies to the regional trains can be a little different. if they're listed under deutsche bahn's transport associations it's all g to use the DB app, or if it's a DB train itself of course, otherwise you'd need to look into the local apps / offerings. for the DB app though if you can purchase your ticket on the app then it's just a digital qr code on your phone
how good the db app is depends on your area. it worked fantastic for where i lived on the KVV transport network
metronom's website says they use the FahrPlaner app
Looked on their app but it's just like train times etc
are you looking at the right one / place?
you need to look under tickets not trip planner
Ahh nvm wrong app then
What of my trains cancelled though?
@glad current
If you bought a ticket for that train eg spar ticket, and it vanishes, you go to the office at the station and sort things out
My mum got the ticket for the very next train since that suited her
Also, price difference between exact train and any train can be quite huge. Also among exact trains (depending on the time they go). At least that's my experience for route Berlin Hamburg, so DB, IC or ICE, mostly ICE
And even if you buy for the exact train, seat reservation isn't included, so you have to buy that if you want it
Hope this helps :)
Yeah no I stand on the train anyway since its 15 mins from a to b
If you like second hand clothes Kleiderkreisel is pretty great, kind of like German poshmark
Bewerbungsanschreiben is "motivational letter"?
Can anybody confirm if I need travel insurance to cover the time between entering Germany, and starting my new job (with proper insurance coverage)?
What are some good online fashion retailers in Germany? Like UK has boohoo etc?
C&A is good in both price and selection
Also how hard is it to get a minijob here? Apparently I cant get ALG2 or something equivalent
Which wouldve covered my health insirance
And my course fees
On Saturday, which is supposed to be the unification day, can we do laundry
XD
Odd question but my laundry box is full
is your local laundromat open on sundays?
No I'm doing it at home
I'm doing laundry in the bathtub
2-in.1
my instinct is that it'll depend on how uptight your neighbors are lol
I used to be constantly scared of doing things like showering at night or doing laundry at night because I'd heard horror stories of angry german neighbors but honestly I think most of the time you're probably gonna be fine as long as you aren't unlucky enough to live next to someone unreasonable
also shit I forgot about the holiday I should get groceries today
Oh the horror stories are plentiful for sure
But just think of all the "normal stories" you don't hear
yeah, people don't usually post about how their neighbors are fine with their normal volume levels lol
older the building, thicker the walls usually
I'd heard the opposite, that there's better soundproofing in newer buildings and older buildings can be echo-y
but that's secondhand, I live in a newer building and it's fine for me
O God my neighbour in England when me n mum used to live in a flat, she used to put the washing machine on at 4am
ah u meant the sound of the washing machine xD
i forgot that exists because my landlord got us a new washing machine that barely makes any noise after some of my flatmates used to do the laundry late night
:0 cool i'd love to have one of those
mine's not too noisy but for me there can never be enough silence
Ours makes a lot of noise but anyways didn't matter, insulation is good in my house
yeah mine's a lil loud but if the kitchen door is closed it's fine
Anyone here studies in TU Kaiserslautern? Or anyone living in Kaiserslautern?
Hey does anyone know if the health insurance card from tk counts as an âamtlichen Lichtbildsausweis?â
that's at least in terms of proving your identity when you go vote
any good job sites for part time work?
depends
Hey does anyone know if the health insurance card from tk counts as an âamtlichen Lichtbildsausweis?â
@copper geyser
I think if you're on a train and they want to check your id, it should count
but if you are picking up a packet from a dhl kiosk for example, youd rather have your normal ID
cuz they often deny it
if it has your picture and personal information it should work, otherwise no
Official photo ID right
ope misread your question sorry
one time i was at a bank and they asked for an ID and all i had was my TK Gesundheitskarte and they were like nvm so idk if theyâd accept it but probably officially wouldnât count
What are German employers' views on online bachelor's degrees, esp. those from German universities? Are they acceptable?
definitely don't take just my opinion on it but they very clearly consider them second-class qualifications
So not really good for a foreigner trying to supplement their current degree?
i couldn't say. It's certainly better to have it rather than not have it, but whether it's worth any investment if recognition is all you care about, is not for me to say
amother thing to consider is price. e.g. why pay thousands of euroes for a subpar online degree when a normal degree will only cost you a few hundred
an offline degree might force you to stop working alongside due to more restrictive timing, or even move to a more expensive location
so itâs not really clear whether theyâre cheaper in the end
i have question
im currently living in Magdeburg germany
i have quite a talent in music playing
am i allow to entertain on the streets to get money?
i have question
im currently living in Magdeburg germany

am i allow to entertain on the streets to get money?
@shell nova yeah if its not stolen
Rules vary from town to town. If your German's good enough, call the town hall and find out. Otherwise, just try it. Might depend on the instrument you're playing - in some places, really loud instruments like bagpipes aren't allowed. Using amplifiers is usually not allowed. In some places, you can't play longer than 30 mins in one spot, then you have to move. If your papers are in order, the worst thing that will happen is that somebody calls the police, and they'll tell you what the rules are - they usually only become unfriendly if you keep doing something you've been told not to do. :) @shell nova
do i have to pay for like getting allowed to play ? @dim bridge
I don't know, but it seems unlikely. đ€·
Definitely check the local laws and regulations for your city. Some are very free in what they allow, others require something called a "Sondernutzungserlaubnis"
For the city you mentioned specifically I found this:
(1) Keiner Sondernutzungserlaubnis bedĂŒrfen: 4. einzeln auf Gehwegen und in FuĂgĂ€ngerzonen auftretende StraĂenmusikanten (ohne elektro-akustische VerstĂ€rker) ohne einen lĂ€ngerzeitigen Verbleib auf dem Standplatz (30 Minuten);
https://www.magdeburg.de/media/custom/37_1549_1.PDF?1329908987
So 30 mins in the one location without a permit so long as you're a sole musician, out of the way, and don't use an amplifier
thx @deep vessel
Hello, a question about Austria HTL, if i have already a Bachelor in IT (Bachelor Engineer) and also have dyploma from my technical high school + some experience in IT will that count as substitute for HTL?
depends on where
many german companies won't even look into your application if you don't have a degree in something mathsy. Which is idiotic, but will keep happening until a generation of people who know how technology works gets into power
guys, is it harder to become a male model when you are not white in ethnicity in Germany?
and does having a scar on the face(a small one) reduces your chance dramatically?
You don't need a face if you become an underwear model.
đ

Well many germans maybe do, but i was asking more about Austria ones
@tight kelp i would not say idiotic, because it depends on position. For software engineer to have some degree in IT should be very common, for testers maybe not so much but still. By degree i mean atleast bachelor because it is not hard to get and college/uni can give some nice education (if its good, if not well at least you have degree :P)
guess time to train my glutes then to become an underwear model
Are gym memberships more affordable than in the US in Germany?
From what I remember, gyms have a similar cost in Germany. I saw places advertising 10-15⏠a month. Nicer ones are more expensive, of course. And it may depend on location. I was in a university town, so gyms were in demand and there were plenty of options. Gyms may be less common in other cities.
Got 60euro charge last week or 2 on metronom. I made a ticket via a contact form last week and they said my payment will be delayed until they message me back with what happens but I've not had a responce at all apart from their auto reply bot. So I'm confused if I need to pay within the next week or what because I've heard nothing

Yeah just because it's been over a week ow so I'm like ?
Hey, I was wondering if Leipzig was a good city for foreigners. I wanna do my Masters in Germany. I've heard that the former East Germany is generally not great for foreigners but perhaps I'm just being ignorant.
How much would a dentist appointment be without health insurance here like a 1 time thing?
Lol when you're over 19 in the UK even with healthcare costs ÂŁ30 just for a check up
Apparently in Germany with health insurance its free
With 2 annual check ups and basic fillings
Where can u buy beans? Like baked beans? In the UK theres 4 for ÂŁ1 but here I've only seen 1 for 95c at NP :( is there any other stores which sell decent baked beans in Germany
Missing beans on toast ;-;
baked beans are regarded as typically British food in Germany, which means that you're only going to get them in stores which are big enough to offer food from foreign countries
iirc you'd already get them at supermarkets like Netto, but they definitely aren't as cheap as in the UK
What. Isn't it like their national food
it is
Yeah theres so many everywhere Haha
Does anybody know if Transferwise will give a DE IBAN?
Yes and no. They give you a DE IBAN that people send money to, but when you pay money out it doesn't actually come from that IBAN which makes refunds quite messy
Hmm
it's because they're not actually a licensed bank
Would you recommend it? Over something like Deutsche bank?
go with deutsche bank
transferwise as mentioned isn't actually a licensed bank so you get none of the protections real banks have
I will be working here for 2-3 years (maximum?) before returning to the US. I will most likely want to move money around between countries.
You can use it as a good middle ground for transferring money, but not as your main bank account
wire fraud
I won't be commiting any wire fraud đź
im giving a suggestion
though honestly unless you're still paying bills back in the US the only transfers you should need to be doing are once when you move there, and once when you move back
If I want to move ~3k Euros in, is it worth getting transferwise just for that?
it depends - you'd have to look fees and currency exchange rates. I think if you're going to do a lot of travel too, transferwise is a good thing to have, but as previously mentioned it's very ill advised to use them as an actual bank account tho. They specifically state in there TOS that they're not a licensed back and thus shouldn't be treated as such.
What do people think of n26?
it's very popular. I also used them and it was all smooth sailing. The biggest flaw was since they don't have physical branches if you have cash on hand you can't really deposit it
I wonder how Transferwise compares to paypal? Didn't they recently add something that makes transfering money less spendy?
I've been letting my partner pay rent for some months, so I have some debt to pay down đŹ
i wouldn't be able to answer that as i only use paypal when buying stuff, and there it's linked directly to my bank account
Looks like Xoom integration, so 12 Euro for 3k. I'm happy đ
I use transferwise for my transfers, but I do them between my actual US and DE bank accounts
it's definitely better than paypal wrt customer service, and though I can't speak for costs they've generally been low
ich hoffe bei dir alles ist in Ordnung.
Any German youtubers to watch? Boyfriend told me to watch them since I only learn basic things in my course so it would be good to hear n see it in use often kinda? But he doesnt watch German youtubers >.>

try the website meetups
@warm flume there is Berlin discord server made for meeting new people in Berlin
And there's dach discord for hanging online
First has invite link, don't know how it works, I joined long time ago
Second I found on reddit for Deutschland I think, in the description
Or some linked reddits
Anyone know if shaving products marketed to women have 19%vat in Germany? I know men's shaving products are 7%
Schlechter Lases
Still not heard back from metronom been over 2 weeks :/
Does anyone here have experience with Upwork in Germany? I'm relatively recently in Germany and still in school, but I'd like to earn some money as a freelancer. Got some questions about that.
Any German youtubers to watch? Boyfriend told me to watch them since I only learn basic things in my course so it would be good to hear n see it in use often kinda? But he doesnt watch German youtubers >.>
@glad current
Here's a list of German YouTubers I like, but I have a very special taste and most of them could be very uninteresting for you.
I tried to give you a broad variety of channels, because I don't know what you like.
Coldmirror
She's on of the first and YT and makes/has made many different things. Like fun synchronizations, misheard lyrics, her own sarcastic animation series which make fun of the whole anime and StarTrek/StarWars genres. If you like Harry Potter you should definitively go check her out, because she is a huge Harry Potter fan. The "5min Harry Podcast" is a MUST WATCH for all fans.
Mailab
If you like science (on YT) this is a channel for you. She analyzes all kind of things. Also, the channel belongs to, like Coldmirror, FUNK, which is an organization of the öffentlich-rechtliche for YT. This means their channels have no ads and you can download the vids for free.
Zeo
Zeo is one of the few comedy channels (along with Varion) that still make vids (not like Julien Bam or iBlali). He is a little hyphy but if you like that it's really hilarious.
Julien Bam
He doesn't make YT vids on his main channel anymore but they were really popular. He made comedy content and music, which were fun to watch. Personally, I didn't enjoy the last vids of him. For me they were a bit to assi, like you would say in German. But you should watch some of the older Hey Ju vids (FAQ).
Rezo (ja lol ey)
On his main channel he makes mostly music but he makes more vids on his second channel nowadays. On this channel he makes the usual low-quality content: Challenges and mini-games with other YouTubers. But recently, he made 3 political vids, criticizing the press, some conservative parties, conspiracy theorist and the false world view of an other music-related YouTube channel. Especially the party video got viral and people who don't usually watch YT watched it.
Kurzgesagt
This is a really high-quality animation science channel. If you know the english channel (Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell) and like them, the original German would be of interest for you. And unlike other science channels, their content is for unprofessional people more understandable and more entertaining.
JustNero
Just Nero is a critical channel which criticizes (obviously đ) other (mostly) German channels. This would be a good starter channel, because you get to know many different channels and you may find someone who you like. He's not just negative, he also makes lists of channels which he likes and so on.
Space Frogs
They make comedy content and reaction vids. They are really sarcastic and parody many different things (Galileo, Andreas Kieling, FrontaljÀger21)
Here are some more channel which I don't watch but you might find interesting:
Varion (Comedy sketches)
Unge (Reaction)
Walulis (Reportages)
LeFloid (News)
Sallys Welt (Cooking)
Gronkh (Gaming)
Sostrator (YouTube poop)
KennyK (ASMR)
HandOfBlood (Gaming)
Jay & Arya (movies and series)
Does this help?
Whattt thanks so much for all your time and effort :O yes it does ty!!
I'd also like to suggest teddy teclebrhan. Comedy sketches. But be aware that he plays some characters that don't really speak in proper German.. but it's still hilarious
Check out his song "Lohn isch da". It's fantastic
Yess!! I've from him too! Many people said he is very funny.
@hallow oyster lit server. Thanks for sharing.
Yikes ikk is pressing me n my bf for my health insurance when my school says to get a job first then they will cover your health insurance
And now someone from ikk is coming on Tuesday to sort everything
And my school is closed for another week because we have holidays
Even my school is in contact with the job centre and talk about my insurance
Are they gonna make me pay 200 a month
For health insurance out of my own pocket or what
When I barely have that much
@glad current Malwanne, Marti Fischer, Fynn Kliemann, Behaind, Battle Bros , Sgt Rumpel, Sarazar, Alexi Bexi, NDR Doku, Zombey, Altf4Games, Gameomat, Doktorant, MalGli, gametwo, IBlali, Rahmschnitzel, Sturmwaffel, Paluten, Maudado, Peter Frahm, Tamara Wernli, Open Mind, TerraX Lesch und Co, Terra X Natur und Geschichte, Cosmic Cortex, Dorfuchs, Held der Steine, (& his second channel) Der Held, Pietsmiet, GreenRabbit, techtastisch, Marmeladenoma
A few more I really enjoy watching, including philosophy, science, gaming, casual talk, documentaries, comedy etc.!
So many ty!
How do u make a good Lebenslauf? Do you need a picture of yourself on it?
I'm applying to lots of part time jobs but maybe because part of my cv is in English I'm not hearing back đą I stated I'm learning once or twice
Or something like this
https://www.lebenslaufmuster.de/wp-content/uploads/lebenslaufmuster60.jpg
Just take a template from the internet in word or LaTeX and fill in your details. That might be the beast idea
A signature below might be best like this
https://www.lebenslauf.de/templates/lebenslauf-klassisch.jpg
And try to keep it all german or all english for the ideal impression
Yes a picture needs to be on it
of course
What type of picture? Like a more professional type /passport or like just any one
Without filters over it ofc
Mines like a selfie bc it's the only decent one I have where it's not from 20m away
Otherwise its zooming in etc
Like a professionally done application shot ideally, alternatively just a nice picture with you smiling (confident) and a neutral background (depending on the job though, for jobs where you would have to wear suit you should dress accordingly on the picture ideally)
it's excepted from you in germany, since it's the standard and everyone does it
Yeah same in the UK no photos its seemed as unprofessional haha
But I guess yeah it's nice to see who they could be hiring
And keep the picture businessy so to speak as this image shows:
http://media.newjobs.com/dege/redaktion/CA-images/Bewerbungsfoto_richtig-falsch.jpg
One job contacted me back but said apply again when you're fit enough to speak good German;-;
It was perfect job too
no smile
if you frown on the picture people are less inclined to want to work with you
Mine has the sacrĂ© cĆur on it haha
But a confident, friendly look (must not even be a smile) that signals "I am a competent nice fellow"
Well that's hard
is best
^
That's what I said, a professional can make even the most depressed, incompetent guy look professional in the right lighting
that isnt' cheap though lmao
@exotic barn Might be a worthy investment though, if it increases your chance of having the dream job you always wanted
In second thought, I think that the picture in the bottom right is also bad because it's a biometric id photo, which you shouldn't use
When taking a biometric id photo, you are also asked to look neutral, so it fits
Ah why cant u use it
Treat yourself as a product you want to pitch
I will ;D
Ah why cant u use it
@glad current it's too neutral and artificial / robotic
btw i don't think the bottom right pic is not good because he's not smiling
he's framed like in a passfoto
i mean yeah the smile would help ig
.>
In second thought, I think that the picture in the bottom right is also bad because it's a biometric id photo, which you shouldn't use
@cold aspen
ah sorry didn't see
if you frown on the picture people are less inclined to want to work with you
though tbh it's a bad example because it's clearly a professionally shot photo and the light doesn't look at all like a biometric photo
arent' biometric photos professionally shot?
you can get those at a booth and they look like utter shite
but biometric doesn't automatically imply professionally shot, it's just a set of parameters they must fit to be usable for IDs
and one of those is the light has to be fairly even, i don't think a pic like that one would be accepted considering he's got half his face shadowed like a sci-fi villain
no your head needs to be a lot rounder for that
if you don't look like the giant bullet from super mario from at least one good angle you do not qualify
it's the law
But I cant find a job ;; I need health insurance
most photo shops should offer biometric photos, and if its a reputable place it'll be professionally shot

Where do you find 100% pure minced pork and where can you find lean minced beef, or minced chicken in Germany? Do I have to go to a butcher for this?
Minced meat you can definitely find it in most of the supermarkets. Chicken, Beef, Pork, Turkey @slim fulcrum
Gemischter Hack andnrinder hack is usually all they have
Some of the big supermarkets, like Kaufland, would have their own Butchery, and you can asked them there
Hmm maybe I need to check real
If you want to ask for something more specific, however, like, 80%lean, 20% fat of the meat, you need to go to the Butcherâs no matter what
Definitely not gonna get specifics like that in the prepackaged ones
But Rinderhackfleisch is minced beef....or am I getting my food wrong?
đ€Ł
I'm looking for 100% pork, and poultry
Okay, yeah, Iâve seen thr 100% pork and 100% chicken as well in my local (small) supermarket
I make Japanese gyoza with gemischter hackfleisch and it's okay, but the beef flavour is still strong and not traditional
Maybe it just doesn't sell here since there are so many vegetarians and Turkish folk in Bremen đ€Ł
Just the usual Norma, Netto, Aldi, Lidl, Kaufland
The next Kaufland is 30 km from here
Maybe it just doesn't sell here since there are so many vegetarians and Turkish folk in Bremen đ€Ł
@slim fulcrum I doubt that...especially in a big city like Bremen
Oh we don't have Norma, but we have Edeka, rewe and all those others you just listed
South or North?
South
BW
My usual supermarkets are Norma or Kaufland, so I may be biased. But I doubt that my local Aldi and Lidl doesnât have any 100% minced Beef/Pork/Chicken
Dang that's weird
Maybe I'm blind đ€Ł but now I learned it's not a typical German thing, it's just Bremen. I'm gonna ask a local Facebook group.
Yeah, maybe itâs Bremen....
But have you searched all of your local supermarkets?
I realized when I was in the Netherlands, in Maastricht, the Aldi and Lidl there arenât as complete as the one I have in my village for some reason
So it could really be just the city itself...
Aldi is the worst when you need something specific but they got the cheapest eggs and Aufbackbrötchen
I dunno, I should probably scan the ones in the city centre cuz I'm usually doing groceries closet to home in my neighborhood
How am I meant to afford 200eur a month health insurance, 195 a month course and 150 a month train đą someone from ikk is coming in a few days to try and make me sign up to health insurance even though my school said to find a part time job and are helping me find one before health insurance
I've applied to several jobs etc the jobcentre said they cant give me money to cover some cost and HI because apparently I'm not "looking" for a job even though my school started to them I am on the phone to someone who works there, I got sent 3 questions non related to am I looking for a job which I answered and posted to them so they prob got mixed up
School stated*
first off, 150 a month for transportation seems a humongous sum
the course (if it's a language one) seems really expensive too, to me
Yeah I had it half price since the immigration/border centre discounted it even though I'm from the EU otherwise 350+ a month xd
And yeah db trains :D
15 min train journey 5 times a week
I'd already 50eur
Is
Like I rly want to work since I can have my own money to do things like when I worked in the UK
yeah that's definitely too much wtf. A 30-day ticket here, non-abo, for the A3 class (which basically covers the main city area in big cities), is less than 60âŹ
i don't know where you live but 150 seems way too much regardless especially for as little as 15min trips
i wish i could offer actual help though
Tbh it was the same price going to my college back in England but the trains werent always this late >.>
What the heckerooni, how are eggs that cheap @exotic barn
@glad current can you not get a monthly ticket
Nope it costs more for 4 weekly ones than monthly :(
N even more for daily
Oops misread
Yeah I do get monthly one which is 150 a month
On the "Conferal for the Application of a Residence permit"
Do you have german language skills
(no additional place to mark qualifications)
Does anyone know if I need an accredited certification to make Ja here?
I have like A1.5 from personal study
i'm not sure how much a1.5 would count as that's only half of the lower most certificate. generally though you need an approved ceritifate (not just any will do), or in special cases a verbal interview can test this but at a1.5 i can tell you that that wouldm't be enough even if you qualify as a special case. check the city council's page of where you'll be applying for the residency permit for for specific details
Ok thanks đ
How much is ikk voluntary insurance?
Scared I'm not gonna be able to afford it
Since my school managers told me to apply for jobs first and get one before getting health insurance
But someones coming tomorrow to make me sign up :c
I know AOK is 200 a month
i pay around 100 for tk
tk gang đȘ
Yeah I have to pay 195 a month for healthcare now
And 30 a month since I havent had HI for 4 months
So 30 per month to make up for 195*4 months
The low 100s are student ones right?
Sad I dont class as a student :(
Can any german help me with figure out if the document from BKA allows this whip or not?
only if you post the document can any of us read it
hi, is anyone here currently studying in germany?
yes a lot of people here
only if you post the document can any of us read it

no it's not forbidden,
you're allowed to own it but not carry it around with you
@empty hinge yeah what's up
Thaaaanks
Am I not entitled to alg2? I've lived here for 4 months, unemployed but applying to jobs (from EU)
I have proof I've applied eyc

Dear people who live in Germany. Do you have any idea what caused the second wave of COVID to happen there these days?
@edgy timber This kind of topic isn't really allowed on the server, sorry. If someone wants to DM you about it, they're welcome to do so, but just letting you know that you shouldn't have the discussion here.
Hey guys, I don't live in Germany but is there any way I can contact the german police from outside of germany?

@solemn bay Oh, okay. Thank you and sorry about that.
Hey guys, I don't live in Germany but is there any way I can contact the german police from outside of germany?
@exotic barn I just asked the German police that. I will tell you the result
@exotic barn I just asked the German police that. I will tell you the result
@exotic barn Thanks, man.
hope you are not being sarcastic.
No, I'm serious

Which shop is the Best to buy alcohol in Germamy?
cheap: discounter (Aldi, Lidl...)
big name brands: supermakets (Edeka, Rewe,...)
independant specialist shops for high quality stuff (wine, wisk(e)y,...)
And rewe is the pricey version of penny
@hidden briar what about Real
A GetrÀnkemarkt will usually have the best selection, prices arent that bad typically.
a GetrÀnkemarkt usually has a great selection of beer and other low alcohol content drinks, but for spirits you want a higher class supermarket or specialty store
good to hear lmao đ
If there is an American adult in Germany who has some experiences with the day to day life, who doesn't mind me asking them a few questions here and there, then please hit me up.
btw, the reason why I say "adult", is because I have questions regarding adulting in Germany
@tranquil stream I'll gladly answer some questions, dm or here is fine
Englisch wÀre besser
if there's anyone who works as web developer in nordrhein westphalia i'd appreciate if you'd be willing to answer a few questions. Do let me know :>
small hint if u haven't already tried it out, try also asking on the NRW subreddit if it exists.
Been in an ongoing battle the last 4 months, at first with uni-assist, now with the university itself. They aren't counting my AP courses towards the math and science requirement which makes me come up short in that regard and leads to a rejection. Very frustrating.
Was it because of the way that they changed their tests last year?
i heard of a lot people got screwed over even in US unis
They did. A lot of top colleges in America simply did not count AP scores from this year
I mean it's not like top colleges in America counts the ap scores anyway
or unless you mean non Ivys and UC schools
its not even the AP scores they aren't counting the credits for the course itself
did you pass?
I completed these course in 2017, trying to transfer atm
I passed the course not the AP test
but i dont think they accept the AP tests anyway
They aren't counting AP Statistics as a higher level math course because its not Trig or Calc
even though Trigonometry is part of the course
same thing with AP Environmental Science even though Biology and Chemistry is heavily involved
yeah but i did 3 years of American uni, I have more than enough credits
can't you just use that to get into german uni then?
I did but they still denied me, I'm contesting it so hope it goes well
They go by rigid requirements set by the education ministry, like you must complete 50% or more of your degree for a uni transcript to be valid
that's really weird how they denied you because you should be more than qualified
maybe just finish your bachelors and head there for a masters?
Nah I already live here, my 3rd year was an exchange program near Hamburg
on a student applicant visa atm
ah ok
It's just annoying because they gave the same vague response as uni-assist, referencing the education law set by NRW
well I was back-and-forth with uni-assist since they gave me the result in late August. They didnt actually release my application to the uni until early October
I'm in contact with people there and they're generally more helpful. I sent a response basically asking if I can further explain my educational background.
well i hope it goes through, would hate to see you be denied for no reason
i think it might be because in a class where those things where the focus you'd be learning them a lot more in depth when they're not the focus of the class
You mean this in reference to the AP courses?
Yeah. For example while there is a bit of calculus in statistics, statistics doesn't cover all of calculus
right
Yeah true, still kinda frustrating since the program itself hardly uses math or science
it's a matter of equivalence of school systems
germany doesn't consider a US high school diploma equivalent to an Abitur
whereas for example if you're from australia the HSC is considered equal to an Abitur
I just have an issue with the rigid requirements they use, I had to do pester them before uni-assist clarified exactly why they were denying me.
They didn't consider my Astronomy class from uni a science course either, really strange.
Only Biology, Chemistry, Physics are considered apparently. My low level Topics in Chemistry course from 9th grade counts toward the science requirement but not AP Enviro Sci.
Just Astronomy, my degree was Financial Economics
probably explains it then
was never great at math and the science courses always filled up quickly at my college. So I would just have had enough to meet the requirement but I guess not. In the other areas I'm fine
so did you not take calc at all?
Nope
I think it's a matter of the kind of science you're learning
got into Penn State without taking calc lmao
???
I'm surprised they didn't make you take Calc 1 in uni, I did my bachelor's in linguistics and I still needed to take that
yeah
Because AP Stats is on par with Calc by US standards
it... definitely wasn't at my uni
i'm surprised i'm taking calc this semester
@humble bough for high school
I didnt complete my degree
I probably would've needed to reach calc 1 by the end
oh okay
ap stats here qualifies as a stats class not a calc class
that's interesting regardless
but that's more what I mean, AP Stats doesn't count as calc lol
yeah
I didnt say that
yea but on par how?
I said it's on the same level, as in it satisfies a "high math" requirement for uni admission
yeah looking at the curricula unless they've changed a lot in the meantime AP stats looks like it barely covers real calculus at all
yea it's algebra based from what i know
We barely covered trig tbh, it's mostly word problems
you need alg 2 minimum
for german unis their requirements are a lot more specific than general
US universities don't have many hard requirements to get into an undergrad degree imo, it's much more comparative who gets admitted
though ig it depends on the program
Calculus really isn't useful unless you're in STEM
it's pretty much check gpa and check act scores you're in
not gonna disagree but I still had to take it so
my friend applied to Karlsruhe and they didnt accept her ACT scores
why would a German uni give a shit about ACT scores?
lot of particulates when applying over borders
was probably after the 2019-2020 year deadline
i think in general it's because of the US's high school curriculum falls short
e.g. the whole general ed thing in uni just adds to that
oh for sure, all the smart kids started low-level college courses in their last couple years of high school in my home state for this reason
I'm still holding out hope, the letter referenced a separate NC program I applied to rather than the NC frei one
if it's general education it should be covered in high school
Hochschulstart excluded me from the selection a month ago so they're a bit late
i'm doing the same thing
best of luck though. NC ones would specifically be real hard so fingers crossed for the NC frei one
just doing my first two years of american college in high school so
please do
how far can i get without calculus speedrun any%
idk man I'd taken it and my master's degree still made me take remedial calc when I got here
still don't know how you did that and got into penn state that's insane
that's because if you don't use it you lose it
Tbf it was for the summer semester
i've done so much calc but i can't remember shit of it
oh I mean I def needed the course lol
yea it's better to get your math out of the way
they wanted me because I was out of state too
???
only some states mandate that public unis take a certain percentage of in state students
I'm p sure my tuition for all four years in the US was 40k lol
so lots will let out of state applicants in easier
that sounds like they're talking about a US masters
but I was in-state so that's prolly why
mine was too
I had $1000 more than tuition in grants per year and I still graduated with $27k of student debt because of cost of living
and I went to school in the midwest đ
meanwhile germany's paying me to get my master's lol
well, sorta
I have a DAAD stipend
which afaik is funded by the government
but idk for sure I haven't read the fine print on mine
I mean that's what the stipend is for lol
that's surprising
for most states in germany even for foreigners there are no uni fees
yeah lots
the DAAD does bachelor's ones too but I think they're less common and for less money
nah there's still plenty. dunno if less money
the bachelor's version of my stipend is less money, at least
you get more if you're doing a PhD too so
mine was 720 a month going up to 900ish a month this year
Mine started at 850 a month and is going up to just under 900
hm looks like the DAAD doesn't directly give out full ones for bachelor's students, just for master's and up
oh
but you can look for ones offered by other organizations in their scholarship database
yikes there's none for me
i mean it's whatever fafsa's gonna help quite a bit
don't know if fafsa applies for studienkolleg though that's the question
How difficult are German colleges to get into as a US student?
you need to plan your studies a lot earlier to make sure you meet admission requirements
https://www.reddit.com/r/germany/wiki/studying read this first. If you meet the requirements in most cases guaranteed, but unless you plan ahead and take the right courses your high school diploma alone isn't enough
(needs to be equivalent to a German Abitur)
Thank you so much!
@vivid anchor you gotta also remember that you need some really good german skills to be able to even understand the lectures, exams, professors, etc... and as someone who is doing an exchange semester in germany, i recommend you get at least B2-C1 before considering a full degree here
yeah, unless you manage to find an English-speaking program (which is nigh-impossible for a bachelor's) your german needs to be p damn good
Yeah, totally. Hence why I'm here lol
I'm hoping to get B1 in a few months, and C1 by the end of the summer. Don't know how realistic that is but setting a high standard should certainly help
I think b1 to c1 in 6 months is a veryyy lofty goal
Oh yeah IK lol
But even if I don't get to c1, by working towards it I should gain a ton more skill in German, so no matter what it will be beneficial
It's not near-impossible to find bachelor programs in English, there aren't a ton but still an alright amount
Any that focus in MINT?
@olive summit last stats I saw was 98% in German, 2% in English, most of these at expensive private universities of dubious quality (more in English at master level)
there are bachelor programs in English but mostly in Fachhochschulen
and they cost a little
is there actually an advantage of going to studienkolleg? because i've been seeing what my options could be and I can skip studienkolleg, but i see that a lot of people who go into uni without it have to learn the vocab in their field as opposed to having studienkolleg embed the vocab into the prep course and you're ready by the time you go into uni
the biggest advantage would be that fachvocab and just language skills in general
it's not until you move to that country that you realise just how underprepared you are language-wise
it also gives you time to settle into the country without juggling your proper studies
because i'm self studying and over the course of my 3 years of learning i've missed so much content early on since I went straight into reading the news and watching science videos and not focusing on core grammar
is there actually an advantage of going to studienkolleg? because i've been seeing what my options could be and I can skip studienkolleg, but i see that a lot of people who go into uni without it have to learn the vocab in their field as opposed to having studienkolleg embed the vocab into the prep course and you're ready by the time you go into uni
depends on your current level of german. Though ultimately the only disadvantage would be losing a year
Yea i'm b2 reading and listening wise but honestly my writing and speaking is a2
so I'm honestly thinking of the studienkolleg because i don't want to overwhelm myself and end up leaving because i couldn't adapt fast enough
but half of me is also telling me that the year loss in terms of time and money is a lot
hmm
if you were b2 all around and if you arrived a couple of months in advance
you could reach a proficient level quickly enough
a year is far from a lot in terms of time and money
but if you consider yourself a2
especially for a german student
?
well i'm in junior year high school and I have about 2 years to get to b2
germans have a reputation of spending a lot more than the minimum time to complete their degree
ofc depends on your level of commitment
germans have a reputation of spending a lot more than the minimum time to complete their degree
hmm, i think that probably depends on the university
yeah i'm just not confident in speaking or writing but i've been listening to a lot of youtube videos and reading tagesschau everyday
i've also started doing the writestreakgerman subreddit stuff too
i'd also still recommend the studienkolleg. it will additionally help you adapt to and prepare for the german education system which is quite different to that in america
i've just been dealing with a lot these past few months and i'm starting to get back into the groove of things
alright
for example oral exams
i mean, i am just new to this server, but joining conversations in VC is very helpful
excuse me what? oral exams
i'd also still recommend the studienkolleg. it will additionally help you adapt to and prepare for the german education system which is quite different to that in america
university system is in general different
I can barely do paper ones
why hello fellow link
i don't think they would be missing on a lot
hello to you as well
yeah i've honestly planned for german uni since 3 years ago and this is still a question i'm debating over
yep. i frankly wouldn't even know where to begin for an oral exam. i still have no idea how they actually work, except for the part where there's no pen and paper and the professor asks you as question and you have to answer it orally
i just don't want to go into studienkolleg and find out i wasted time but it seems like it's well worth it
it really depends on your level
germans have a reputation of spending a lot more than the minimum time to complete their degree
do you mean it's expected? here you're kind of pressured to finish on time and it's kinda embarrassing if you don't
frankly in my home country we have something like studienkolleg for local students that helps them adjust to learning at a university because it's so different from high school
yea in america if you don't graduate in 8 semesters you're seen as not talented towards employers
which country?
australia
what do you want to study
stem
is it? yikes that's out of my reach then
probably cheaper than the US still all I hear are horror stories
same here
in state is 20k a year whereas it's like 10k in germany if you manage your finances well enough
for example my bachelor would cost an international student 190,320aud
at current prices
australia is for rich international studens lol
holy crap
yeah we get a lot of rich chinese students here
germany can be pretty cheap
especially with stipendiums
switzerland not so much
even though it has better stem schools
yea but i'm going for undergrad so not a chance to get them
i just want to go to uni and walk out knowing i don't need to have debt haunt me for the rest of my life
in most states in germany you pay about a hundredish euros a semester for student services and your public transport ticket. then you just need to cover your living costs
well, it depends, try to search for student associations from your country, they wont give you full rides but it helps
that's as an international student in germany
well I have american FAFSA which is financial aide
and it'll help somewhat considering how screwed up my life has been
i know for certain Ba-wĂŒ is one of the states that charges international students though
most however don't
i was thinking niedersachsen or hessen
Man, I wish I would've taken my AP classes more seriously in High School
Could've popped overseas for school
ye
yea that was the thing that I questioned about
because i could take the ap calc ab, chem, and german exam this year and go straight to german uni but then again i think studienkolleg is the more stable way to go
so wait have any of you gone to studienkolleg or no?
i should've asked that first
ah
i know a bunch of people that have because of the german school in my country. I ultimately decided against studying in germany
oh
german unis typically require around a b2-c1 german cert but frankly just passing c1 is not enough to make studying comfortable language-wise
you right
like really, consider your studienkolleg year like an american gen-ed year
i mean to be fair i'm going to this school where I go to american college and high school at the same time
so i'm already doing gen ed
dual enrollment?
yea i'd say so
AP
it's not ap
no bruh
huh
like I go to the actual college for classes
and they use those college credits for both college and high school credits
and once i'm out i'm considered a junior in uni
but yea i set up a plan of where if german uni doesn't work out i can always fall back to american uni with 2 years done already
anyone doing/did internships during the last few months, did you do it online mostly?
in germany of course
@hidden briar think we had this convo before, the daad website lists at least 100 last I checked, could still make up 2% of total programs in Germany tho
and yeah they're mostly at Fachhochschules
what
hello, is getting a conditional letter for admission in medicine easy?
also which universities are easiest to get into
i asked for a conditional letter because id like to do a studienkolleg first
M course

Sorry if this breaks the c word rule
But where can u get a c.. test done? Like I dont think u can roll up to doctors or such if you're in isolation
You can always call them and ask. They will have a process for it.
Like for example, at my doctor's office, usually they ask the person to go to the car park of the doctor's office and the doctor will go out to the car to test the person.
Where do you live that you're asking about? Because that will make a difference on what advice people can give.
Do you live in Germany?
Yeah theres only 1 doctor here in the town lmao
Next biggest is hermannsburg
Which is 20 min drive
You can just call and they will know what to do (or at least they should).
And ahh okay ty, I remember when I used to walk to work there was a testing station in a big carpark for a few days lol and it was a drivethrough
I called berlin's hotline and asked a couple months ago and yeah they told me to call my primary care doctor (or to go to a special testing station because there are those in Berlin, but if you're in the middle of nowhere that might not be an option)
(shoutout to the lady on the hotline accomodating me and speaking english with me too)
anyone had an issue wth amazon not accepting bank account? it's happening to me now despite buying two things on the same day beforehand and having no issues
i keep getting payment revision needed
can you buy stuff with that bank account through other sites? that'll help you diagnose whether it's an amazon problem or a bank account problem
yeah i bought from other stores
I had that at the beginning, and if I remember correctly, it sorted itself out without me doing anything
I think reason might be that payment wasn't completely processed and until that happens, you wait a bit (several days, since amazon bills you only after shipping the item)
Man i even bought a gift card now from rewe to buy this
and it still says payment revision needed
wtf
goddamn jeff bezos
is rewe the best supermarket
nein
ok
if you're going in that price bracket I preffered Edeka. Their fruits and vegetables were always fresher and of a higher quality, and Edeka tends to have a wider selection of products and produce in general.
I see
the only reason i go to this rewe is cuz it's the closest to me and i have no bike/car to go to lidl/aldi
damn
seems like rewe is not well liked
not gonna lie I like their website layout a lot
they have Ja! and lots of branded products
you wont find nescafe 3 in 1 somewhere else for example
at least in my experience
yea i heard store brands are really good over there
@next lily Es kommt drauf an.
Ich will studieren đ
@tame widget 4-5 jahre
oop, das ist falsch,
ich werd in 3 jahre 18
for other US citizens: the 90 day visa-free period regenerates every half year, correct?
even if you're currently living abroad
90 days in any six month period. that doesn't necessarily reset every half year. E.g. if you spend all of march april and may in germany then you need to leave at the end of may, it doesn't suddenly reset come june. and you'd need a visa if you plan to re-enter before september (6 months from the beginning of march)
Well I've been legal here since last August, my current residence permit is good until mid Feb. next year
August 2019 that is*
if you have a residency permit then it doesn't matter, but you'll need to either have it renewed or leave when it expires
so in my case the 90 days doesnt add onto that? I would have to leave then come back at a later time.
You'd have to double check with an embassy / the authorities but I wouldn't count on those 90 days adding to that.
Are you there for work or school?
school, but I should be getting a new visa soon
just wanna know how much of a buffer I have, my current visa is for uni applicants
yeah im sure the AuslÀnderbehörde knows
I'd definitely double check there then
they should be able to give you the correct answer
just called, would have to extend my visa as usual
The auslÀnderbehörde in my town is apparently too busy to extend any visas in a reasonable time frame, but hopefully the immigrations police are similarly understaffed
Everyone here thatâs in/near Vienna: yâall okay? My DMs are open if anyone needs help
Guys u know when I was scared about the train bill before because I got charged 60 etc
Well they sent me a letter saying I need to pay 67 now even though I've emailed them through their form and they replied that I dont need to do anything until they reply which they havent
Another 7 added or so because I didnt pay it yet even though they said my payment Is suspended until they reply
I quadra checked thebticket number they printed for me on the email and irl and its the same so ultimately they have recieved a notification about that
And suspended it or they just said that so they get more or what
Is that allowed or what I get charged extra because they said my payment is suspended but apparently not
Is that allowed or what I get charged extra because they said my payment is suspended but apparently not
@glad current You should reply to them and explain that they told you the deadline is suspended, and that's why you didn't pay. Make sure that's why they wanna charge you that extra 7 Euros. If that's the reason extra 7, then they should not charge you with it.
I don't know the whole story, but I'd try and see if they have an e-mail / phone number for English speakers, and ask there. And maybe pay the whole thing for now and then demmand a refund - if you have a proof that you were not late on your original payment deadline.
True but they didnt get back to my original email and yeah I have the automatic email they sent me saying my payment is suspended until my objection has been answered
Yeah boyfriend called since the woman didnt speak English
And they said do the form again
And the fact they know I already wrote a message to them on the same day with all my images etc like assures me from no other costs or something simular
Very good! You're so lucky to have a German speaking by your side, I would probably feel very limited in what I can do in these kind of situations :)
can one pay radio tax with an n26 sepa mandat or does it have to be a girokonto?
nwm i didnt read the whole letter. its possible, i just need to sign and one cant do that online soooo ill get another letter where i need to sign and send it back
the sepa mandat i think is what its called
hopefully they accept my request for it to be exempt due to income
lool can one do that
i paid my rundfunkbeitrag using a sepa mandate via n26
yeah you can be exempt from it for a number reasons, like if you receive welfare (doesnt include Wohngeld)
has any foreigner worked at Rheinmetall?
do they employ foreigners?
they're a defence industry company so im just wondering if german defence follows same policies as the US defence industry of not employing foreigners
Normally it would be illegal for them to refuse hiring someone based on nationality, but i don't know if there's anything special for defence companies
i'll apply nonetheless
@dry ravine I wanted to apply there for an internship and I didn't see anything about restrictions for foreigners. It did also mention 'equal chances to all' on almost all their job posts. So it should be possible to apply and get a job there. The restrictions aren't there possibly because they have branches worldwide
I know the ESA has those restrictions though
Thanks for the info
Die ZeitschriftenlÀden im Hauptbahnhof sollten welche haben.
is there a semesterticket equivalent for SchĂŒler?
Is it difficult to find job in Vienna when you are still learning German
A2 atm but probably B1 by the time
Hi, can someone tell me what are the verified organisations to get a certificate from?
for the CEFR level, that is
umm and can someone explain this 'higher education entrance qualification' that a couple unis are asking for? There is a combined exam for the major STEM unis in my country, so is that what they're talking about?
yeah
Then you need to check with the specific uni which certificates they accept.
They will have a list.
when do you guys usually apply for uni in germany? In india we apply many months after our 12th grade is over, in fact almost one year after US admissions, so i missed many deadlines
They will have a list.
ohok thanks
and can you tell me about this higher education entrance qualification thing too?
It probably just means you need a suitable qualification like high school certificate, etc.
Depending on your country.
The DAAD database on admission requirements allows international students to check whether they meet the requirements for the degree programme of their choice in Germany.
Maybe this helps.
hmm see thats what i'm confused about, cuz we have a country-wide high school certificate, but also a specific entrance qualification for STEM
maybe i'll check with the uni
thanks for the help @solemn bay !
If you use that website, for India, it seems to include both of those as options.
yeah, i noticed that it lists them in one option
This mean that I can apply after one year in an indian uni right? Because i was told that American unis and oxbridge and all don't like it when you don't apply in your 12th grade
Yes.
Even if you didn't complete 1 year of Indian uni you can still apply. You would just need to do some extra prereq stuff beforehand.
So it depends which of those you preferred.
Probably just doing a year in India and then transferring is a little less messy in terms of paperwork. But I've never done it so that's just a guess from me.
ok
thanks!
If anyone else can give me some wisdom in this field too pls do so i'm so clueless ;-;
also, also is it true that if you get accepted to a german uni they teach you for free or at very low cost?
it depends on the state but mostly yes
baden-wĂŒrttemberg and one other city somewhere are the exceptions i know of, but still far cheaper than a lot of other countries
but in say bavaria, you'll only be paying a couple hundred euros for a student contribution each year
oh thats great
germany is looking like a great option for me in many ways
are the situations similar in other german speaking countries too?
austria has fees for non-eu citizens but they're still relatively cheap. switzerland has more expensive fees, and is just a more expensive country to live in in general
and what about the admission process?
bcuz it looks like in germany atleast the indian test that i was mentioning is a legit good way to get in
i wouldn't be able to speak for that
the only other thing i know about switzerland is that if you're looking to immigrate there you're gonna wanna be a phd or something because even from an equivalent developed country with a higher education it's really really hard to get a work visa. student visas of course are no issue if you're accepted, but once you're done with your degree they expect you to leave the country
good luck! it's a fantastic uni but i've heard the admission requirements are very very difficult
So messaged metronom again after they sent me a letter saying I have to pay 67 eur even though I've already made a claim and they said its suspended until they reply back to me. Called them up and they said make another claim ticket saying what's happened and that you've already made one before. Still no reply apart from the, your payment is suspended until your objection is answered >.>
So I'm just worried how long I have to wait and if they will take the pay further since for them I havent paid even though they've paused it
@split kraken im also an indian looking to study in germany, we shoul be friends
Any idea where I can get my Sozialversicherungsnummer? I haven't worked ever in Germany and don't have anything that has such info on it. I do have a Steuernummer tho
one is given to you once you get a job
Oooh ok thanks
Yeah, just remind employer that it's your first job in Germany so they'll know what to do
@split kraken im also an indian looking to study in germany, we shoul be friends
@split totem damn same pinch
can i dm you?
hello, i have offtopic question regarding student visa, can anyone help?
is there a way to track my visa application? whether it is the auslÀnderbehörde or the embassy.
not really from my experience other than calling/emailing the AuslÀnderbehörde
@split kraken hell yeah
@split kraken im also an indian looking to study in germany, we shoul be friends
@split totem đ I'm also Indian!
@split kraken @split totem better to make a group!
we should, iâll add u guys
Yo, one could also get his Sozialversicherungsnummer from the Krankenkasse
I just called and asked for mine today
Speeds up the process of getting hired for the first time
Techinically i need to have a krankenversicherung since im not an eu citizen and am here on student visa
ohh ok
man the eu makes things so much easier. Those poor idiots who'd want to dissolve it have no idea what they're talking about
rich countries together strong. makes sense to me
the eu isn't just rich countries
my country while not technically poor has been a liability for the eu since the very beginning
but touristically its still ya know in good shape
Was ist Provisionshinweis im Wohnungsangebot ?
could you paint it yourself? It's likely much cheaper to paint yourself than for the renter to hire a painting service.
Mold can't just be painted away. It needs to be removed professionally cause it could still continue growing, and it's harmful to the health. The "Maler" usually does this work too
Can somebody tell me what is Provisionshinweis in apartments offers?
I looked it up and provision is effectively the commission the agent gets and the tenant seems to have to pay for it@high lodge. And Hinweis is a notice. So its probably like to let u know that a provision will have to be paid
@exotic barn so i would have to pay monthly fee, caution and provision to get an apartment?
@high lodge by monthly fee, do you mean rent? Rent and caution (deposit) is normal.
Regarding provision, I've not experienced that before but I assume you found an apartment through an agency, so yea you'd have to pay them that provision if the contract mentions it
@exotic barn yea i meant rent. Did you had any experience with this provision? Like is it one time payement or another fee attached to the rent?
seems like a one time payment. It's effectively a commission
can u tell me wat is the difference between ( Hauptschulabschluss, realschulabschluss und das abitur ) ? danke im voraus.
Hauptschulabschluss is completion of 9 years of schooling, Realschulabschluss is 10, and Abitur is 12
i know i need abitur for uni . but wat about the others ?
afaik, realabschluss is used for going for ausblidung
okay and haupt ?
some Ausbildung only require Hauptabshluss but it varies
After the 4th or 6th year of schooling you move to either Hauptschule, Realschule or Gymnasium depending on how good your grades are. You can move from one school tier to another. In principle you can go to Realschule after finische the Hauptschule and then, after finishing Realschule, you can go to the Gymnasium. The Gymnasium is 12 or 13 years depending on state and school. In general, 13 years of Gymnasium will give you Abitur, which allows to enroll in any university. However there are different paths: e.g. after 12 years of Gymnasium you can leave school, start an apprenticeship and then go to university. Though you can enroll only in a limited subset of subjects.
Also worth noting that in many cases foreign educational qualifications are not equivalent to an Abitur
can someone recommend a wohnung rent offers website?
wg-gesucht.com @high lodge
theres an app for it too ^
alternatively u could use Airbnb but the offers are generally more expensive there
Wie kann man eine Schufa bekommen?
I don't think you can get one without registering first (anmeldung)
And in order to do that, you need a place to stay where they allow you to register there
Such stuff people solve by either renting long term airbnb (only where they allow you registration, not everyone will), using sites like wunderflats which also rent fully furnished flats but longer rents are expected (like for airbnb default are days, but months can be found, whilst for these one months are default)
Or you go to WG, shared flat, again, somewhere where you're allowed to register
Without registering you cannot get your tax number (needed for job), health insurance, which also provides pension number (again, work needed), and offline banks won't open you bank account nor you can take contracts for like mobile phone (only prepaid, but they also started asking for german address, but not Anmeldung)
Schufa automatically starts when you register and open the bank account in offline bank
So yeah, it's all interwoven
Oh, and for renting long term flat (minimum 1 year), like those on immoscout (and they're empty, often without kitchen and sometimes even without flooring), you need last 3 salary payslips
So, easiest way is to get a job, which provides you with 6 months flat where you can register, during that time you resolve your own accommodation
Second easiest is to rent through wunderflats or similar (I used that one for Berlin)
Shared flat with registration could be the next good option, especially since then those people can maybe help you to navigate the things
Everything else needs a bunch of jumping through the hoops, doable, but needs a ton of luck and patience
Not to say, you need those two for any option, but I think it gets insanely harder towards the bottom of this list, easiest being when your job solves everything for you
If one is a student tho, the whole Schufa thing isn't worth it imo. A better option would be to just look for a flat that doesn't need it or WG or a company or your local student organization that deals with apartments.
We rented a non-student apartment just fine without one
As a Hauptmieter?
nice! thats great! I just found it extremely difficult to search for something like that in Berlin
I can imagine, our search for the perfect place took months even though it was in a small town.
What is Schufa? I've never come across it and I've been here for more than 3 years
What is Schufa? I've never come across it and I've been here for more than 3 years
@exotic barn it's a way of you/others determining your eligibility to receive credit
idk how it's calculated though
take a look at this if you're interested in getting one: https://www.schufa.de/

i need to get another one because i sent it to the wrong address đ
is Frakfurt or Hamburg a good place to move in?
Hamburg is better imo
