4.99, 751mb :p
@fair talon I found an even cheaper one from lidl
https://www.lidl.de/de/classic/s7373642
why didnt u go for this one
they say its free i think
lol
i dont have a grundgebuhr either
they just threaten me to turn my number off twice a year
if i dont plop a few euro on the account
yah this lidl classic also no basic fee. and its not like u cant call and sms and stuff. [which i almost never do but still important for emergencies]
so seems perfect
i think the 10 euro which i will get with the card would last me all year
@tame forum I need at least a little data lol
I actually hardly use the text and call
dex is too damn loaded lol
🤷🏼♂️
Already got the newest 🤷
I work so I can afford it
Yeah
i think my waifu has something like 70€ with the newest samsung
plenty of data too
meanwhile im using J7 samsung because its dualsim
and i dont really need anything better
i never understand the need for having an expensive phone because 150€ android phone can pretty much handle anything id need
🤷

reeeee apple never get virus
1k€ iPhone says otherwise
iphone is for animals
and white girls
Did you just assumed my color????
i mean the only reason for me to ever use apple is osirix
😡
yes
and thats the only reason i ever used it
n m pretty sure m right
send selfie
ur sexy
Yes thanks
@fair talon my ausländerbehörde replied with the docs i need to bring. its reall wierd, they didnt ask for photographs, or asked to fill any forms
Interesting 🤔
Zur Anmeldung bringen Sie bitte folgende Unterlagen mit:
- gültiger Reisepass
- gültiger Aufenthaltstitel / Fiktionsbescheinigung / Visum (ggf. inkl. Zusatzblatt)
- Einzugsbestätigung (siehe Anhang)
- Nachweis Sperrkonto mit einem Guthaben i.H.v. 10.236,00 € (ggf. Verpflichtungserklärung oder Nachweis über ein Stipendium)
- Immatrikulation der Hochschule
this is all that they asked. nonetheless. since my appointment is on 22nd october, i will still ask my uni if they auslaenderbehoerde needs a form.
can someone explain to me like im an actual 3 year old what they know about going to german university as an international student. I am very confused
like literally anyone who knows anything
There is so many questions to answer. There are a million ways!
Like if I’m an American and I wanna get a bachelors in Germany right, there’s this thing called studienkolleg and that confuses me. What is it why is it how is it
And what level of german proficiency do I need for that
I'd suggest grab a cup of tea and set a timer for an hour. Sit down and research for the time, come back with concrete questions. Please don't take this in a rude way, just it'll help you better.
If you want to study in Germany as a non-EU international student, you must first check if your previous qualification is recognized at German universities. Every school-leaving certificate attained in your country must be compared and translated into German qualification ter...
And use this: https://www.daad.de/deutschland/nach-deutschland/voraussetzungen/en/57293-daad-database-on-admission-requirements/
The DAAD database on admission requirements allows international students to check whether they meet the requirements for the degree programme of their choice in Germany.
Thanks a lot Base
Np.
in german supermarkets people bring their own bags, or supermarkets give plastic bags?
Both usually
But afaik they'd either sell paper bags or reusable bags, few have plastic for more than veggies
you go to the grocery store. you check out. the cashier does not put your groceries in a bag. there are no baggers. there is the option to buy individual bags, which are usually under the conveyor belt or nearby. you put the bags you want to buy on the conveyor belt with the rest of your groceries. if you have a shopping cart you or the cashier will place the groceries directly in the shopping cart.
ohkk. i guesss i will carry my own bags then
they only sell paper or hard reusable plastic bags, unless its for like loose fruit and veg
hmm. thanks
if you have a shopping cart you or the cashier will place the groceries directly in the shopping cart.
i doubt the cashier would do that
and they usually don't have enough room to do so if they were so inclined, which they generally are not and have no obligation to be :P
they don't only sell paper or hard plastic bags. In fact, plastic bags are practically nonexistent in that form anymore. They'll sell paper bags or cloth bags, both of which are meant to be reused
but many germans shop with their backpacks or with trolleys (the latter is very popular especially among older people). Plastic bags were a thing of years ago before europe enforced laws against waste and plastic consumption; i'm not even sure shops still use them sometimes, but supermarkets certainly don't anymore
in Switzerland, throw-away plastic bags are sadly still a thing though they cost money now
a whole 5 cents
and good reusable ones like a frank or sth
i just have some huge plastic aldi ones we always keep in the car
as in plastic = reusable
seasonal, normally they cost a tiny bit
but you buy it once and they last quite a long time
for drinks/etc we just keep the Pfandkisten and keep drinks in them, when one gets empty we just pack it in a car and replace drinks at the store and refund Pfand for the old bottles
must be nice, having a car :^)
luckily i basically don't drink when at home. As in, no beer or anything that requires a "kiste"-like container to transport
yes i know how they look like
yea im posting for the other boi
:P
we dont buy any alcohol either, last time i drank was like 2 or 3 years ago
oh wew then you beat me
but anyway in terms of drinks i only buy like one or two bottles of stuff at a time
yea and my wife never ever drinks either, i don't think she ever drank more than a glass of champagne, and even that was a nightmare for her :D
i dont drink alocohol / beers too
so i dont think i will need the Kiste
lucky for me
So i just found some afd flyers inside my building (someone put them through the letter hole) and I'm wondering whether it's illegal to just dump all of them in the bin :)
I doubt anyone would care
Yay, the landlord is arguing louder and louder with her son 👀 meanwhile, im hiding in my room wondering how long til we get a noise complaint
why dont u take the initiative and do the complain
Because its my landlord, and thin walls go both ways 👀
So the VRR is trying to sell me their ticket2000, and it says "verbundweit gültig, montags bis freitags ab 19 Uhr, ganztägig an Wochenended etc etc". Do you guys know if their ticket covers Münster as well?
their website kinda sucks and i find it hard to track stuff down
probably not, Münster belongs to WestfalenTarif and not VRR
fucking hell why must my friends go live in the most inconvenient places
also, why the fuck does nrw have to have a trillion companies for train connections. It's such a pain and so expensive
but i have to use at least two zusatztickets a week anyway so i guess i'll just get the ticket2000 either way
PRIVATISATION BEST
honestly, fuck capitalism tbh
real DDR hours
*Echte Ossi Stunden
American here: Whats a train? 👀
What do you mean xd
@fair talon
wait, what for
To go to Munster?
I had to go to Quedlinburg (Richtung Nordhausen) and I would pay about 46 Euros (Quer-durchs-Land Ticket) one way if I travelled with DB and it would take me 7 hours to get there
But instead I travelled in an Audi Q3 for 15€
😌
I was alone with a female-driver and it was soo convenient
nice
do you know if it's as easy when travelling as a couple? And did you have luggage with you?
was there any spoken or unspoken rule? Like an "obligation" to converse with the driver or whatever
is communication done through the app before meeting up?
I had a nice small talk with the first driver and during the ride back home I just listened to music and didn't talk. The car was full and no one spoke a word.
Yeah, through the app
I wouldn't use Blablacar in Russia but I think it is quite safe in Germany
yeah i don't know why i'm asking so many questions tbh 😂
Just make sure to choose a driver with lots of reviews
Also I want to go to Münster too

Take me
the botanical garden there is so nice
friend of mine lives basically in front of the lake
i've been there once due to the aforementioned
blablacar is awesome, was using it as a student
including 11 hours trips poland-germany :D
Woah
and about conversing/rules during the transport, on the internet site the driver has a profile, where it's stated whether he likes to talk, listen to music and stuff like that
it's worth it to take a longer look at it, because you can often guess how reliable the person is (sometimes you see the guy makes the same trip every single week for years, the chance you'll be stood up is quite minimal then)
Why does Uni-assist say that the university has intake for the summer semester but the university website doesn't show it?
Okay scratch all that, I'm applying to Berlin.
I have a few certificates that are not stamped but they're originals with a seal. How do I get these attested?
@tropic edge scan the certificates, print them out, go to the nearest governement office that is recognized for attesting documents. Carry your original certificates and the photocopies. The government office will cross check photocopies with original. If both are same, the office will stamp the photocopies, thus certifying that the photocopies match the originals.
And u can now send the photocopies to the uni
Hmmm
If you don’t have it in German, you need to have them translated
Otherwise, you can go to the Bürgeramt and have them begläubigt
Bring your passport btw
And your Aufenthaltstitel, just in case
@warped atlas afaik they shud either be German or english. If they r in English too its fine
So translatiom not mecessary if english. [Which i am sure ezioms cambridge certs will be in english]
Yup they are in English
So that's what the whole attestation/notarisation is?
Wait lemme see if I could share images of that
No its nothing to do with the fact that ur docs are in English
I mean in the sense that there are no stamps on the original certificate
Uni/governments allow german and english. But unis ask for attestation so they know u didnt do photoshop or something and changed the grades.
Yah thats fine eziome
U dont need stamp
Theres a seal though right?
The cambridge seal?
Which shines at the bottom?
That shud he there otherwise the person wont attest ur photocopies
Aha okay fantastic, it's just that I got them attested at the Bürgeramt like 6 months ago and felt like it was such an easy process that I it didn't feel like an attestation
Yeah the seal is there the shiny one
Lol
Yah.... One of my friends went with provisional certificate (lacks shiny seal) and they didnt attest
In my head attestation is visiting 15 government offices and traveling across the country
God bless Germany
https://www.tum.de/en/studies/application/notarization/
@tropic edge even though this is TUMS website...... It has guidelines about notorization
Which tell how the doc shud look
Legal question:
So one of the neighbors informed me as I was unlocking the door to my apartment that they filed a noise complaint about my landlord from the drama the other day. Anything I need to worry about/watch out for on my end? (I wasnt involved in the yelling/door slamming, I was hiding in my room with noise cancelling headphones 😅)
If your neighbour complained about ur landlord, why would you be worried?
Never been involved with something like this, wasnt sure if itd be something aimed at the whole flat if they dont know the second person (her son came to visit for a weekish)
Ohhh its a Wohnung?
Yeah, shared flat
Idk much about the legalise sry. Maybe someone else can reply
@fair talon It could be that the police or a lawyer will turn to you as you are a neighbour, so the information means "okay, I did something and it could be that you get involved and asked for something --- so you know what it is about".
It is nothing to worry about, just an information so in case the police or lawyer turn to you, you know what it is about in case they think you are a witness.
---> sorry, shared flat you wrote.
So just forget the "neighbour" part. As far as I understand, you are in the same flat but did not notice what was going on?
My landlord and I live in the same flat. She was arguing with her son and I was staying quiet in my room in the flat
Shared flat, different rooms in the flat
I see - then it is the same as I said, just without the neighbour and "flat mate" instead.
You might be asked as a witness so it is good to know when someone knocks on your door, what it is about.
You do not have to do anything so far but I would make a note in your calendar that your neighbour (name...) informed you (date...) about what he did. And make a short note what was going on and when you decided to have yourself protected from all this by headphones.
that is all.
It is not nice to get involved in this but the most important thing is to keep calm :)
((everybody keep calm and lie on the floor...)
Jake prolly wishing rn his flatmate was calm in the first place
Yup 😅 Looking for a new place, but the contract says itll need 2 months notice
I'll be starting my goethe institute a1.1 course in October
Hope I can reach b1 after 4 years and move to Germany by then
if you also study by yourself, you'll reach b1 way faster than that
don't rely on courses alone though
(advice from someone who teaches language courses)
Agreed! You could probably get to B1 (or good enough to start a B1 course, at least) in about 6 months just self-studying.
Though if you feel you need to take courses, or if that's more comfortable for you, of course that's fine.
taking courses can be a very good resource for finding out the path you need to take
if you have initiative, you can then build on the typical structure a course would have to learn by yourself, which is much more effective and intensive
I watched the whole thing in 1 go on youtube
it's not just videos though is it
Nope
Human interaction is important though
Their are excercises and vocabs throughout
That's why duolingo is not perfect
It took me like 4 months to go thru that thing
And i was able to pass the goethe b1 [real life A2] exam
if someone were already a little more than A1, how easy would it be to jump ahead and 1. find a good point to continue, 2. follow the rest of the series without being confused?
duolingo is less than "not perfect", it's "not good"
@tight kelp its very convenient, they give recaps of tthe story
ah nice
For people starting from thr middle
Oh ok
Their vocabs list and grammar explanations are solid too
Yes thats shit
Kinda
Idk actually i never went thru it, but it was old, and the exercises werent as comorehensive
Othervise their vocabs list and grammar explanations were good. But since the exercises were lacking I switched to nicos
And tbh its the best free course one can do to get started on the entire internet for german imo. I like getting hand held when i am starting something.
N the course does that
So should I stop using duolingo?
I mean i never used it and directly started with nicos..... U can do that too.
Ok
Duo is jus good for getting some starting vocabs, which u can get anyways in nicos too
You don't have to stop if you don't want to. But it's not a good use of time.
95+% of your study time should be something else, at least.
Ok
Duo is more like something you use when you're sitting on the bus/train or in bed.
Yeah
But then I prefer Memrise for that anyway. 😄
duolingo is basically a palliative
Imagine a duolingo employee stumbling upon this server n reading this stuff lol
we actually had that once
actually can't remember whether it was here or on the italian server but he was really easy to spot
he basically wrote about his experience with duolingo every time he could and it was so fake it hurt the eyes
and when confronted he admitted to being paid to do that
makes you wonder about the company and the product itself when they feel the need to do this sort of advertising
sounds bad
@tight kelp this might be a stretch but it miiiiight be possible that it was a reverse physchology tactic by competitors.
Because if he actually was an employee, i don't think he wud emhave ever admitted.
And simply left the server
he did leave the server once he saw it backfired
i guess you could be right but eh, it's a stretch as you say
Sorry for the off topic question but do any of you know a good website to buy and sell used cars in germany?
So I'm going on vacation and don't have a long term apartment yet. Is it possible I could store my stuff in a storage box/room? Does anyone have experience with something like that?
I've found lagerbox but I'll keep looking. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. Even something outside a storage room would do.
Oh yay, landlord's back to arguing with her son lol
what are they arguing about?
Something in French lol, im just trying to cook
rip
2 month notice in the rent contract
- her son only just came home a week or so ago from England
is he leaving again or going to make your life hell for the remaining time?
🤷 I dont even know. Maybe depends on Brexit? No idea
when i studied biotechnology i lived with a family
a brother and his crazy sister
that used to throw plates around
Well, the landlord came into the kitchen and tried to drag me into it, so I just put on headphones and told her im not getting involved 😅
Landlord walks in
loudly starts talking (clearly so he can hear
"Oh Jake, that boy, he never does anything for his mum!"
"I'm not getting involved in this"
übersetzung bitte :D
Sie müssen die Medizin jeden Tag einnehmen
"Döffi trotzdem no go schaffe?"
"Darf-ich trotzdem noch gehen schaffen?"
"Darf ich trotzdem noch schaffen gehen?" (schaffen hier = arbeiten)
@tight kelp
ohh nice
i went through switzerland this year and a customs officer started speaking with my bus driver
i literally only understood bahnhof
also he kinda looked like russel crowe but his voice was a total enttäuschung in that sense
vollständig wäre der Satz Döffi trotzdem no go schaffa go
would the average (swiss-german-speaking) swiss find that last sentence natural?
not sure why i switched to english
yes
In welchem Land?
Deutschland
Try looking CHE rankings
Bachelor - any is good
Master - choose by projects the uni is doing
@fair talon @warped atlas jus a very small question. considering that once i have completed my appointments at aleins office, how many days did it take for the resident visa to come? or is it an immediate process?
as in wherever ur in germany it will only come from berlin?
give an 8 weeks period
holy
The center is in Berlin
I wanna say that's where they issue it all
dunno how backed up it's gonna be
could be really fast
could be slow
by fast, a month, maybe
the two weeks is the Meldebescheinigung by mail, if I recall
guys I have a question, I have a vorfach studium next winter semester
and I have nothing to do next summer semester
My Blaue Karte took awhile because apparently my home country got labeled "dangerous" and needed to be double triple checked
oh and btw, my city does meldebesceinigung and the resident visa at the same place
how do I prolong my visa for this situation? 😦
You could apply for a Feriensemester, @lunar garden , I think
or just apply for the semester by itself, just don't do any Klausur
^you can do that!?
yes
YES PROBLEM SOLVED
Ask for the Feriensemester thing
this is exciting, thank you very much!!! 🙂
that's normal to be done here in Germany
now to focus myself on learning German
But what are you doing now, @lunar garden ?
right now, nothing at all to be honest lol
I find it weird that the university doesn't have anything for you on the summer semester
as in what are you doing this semester? how are you enrolled?
I was a double degree student last year
finished it this summer semester
now im just living in Germany like a potato 😉
while waiting for my vorfachstudium
but you're technically no longer a student now
so, technically as well, you literally are living in Germany illegally, or? 🤣
im living here legally
hmm... good question
🤔
well, my entrance test is at next week so
@warped atlas btw u were fluent in german when u went to mannheim for ur uni studies?
not to make you confused and afraid or anything, but technically once you're finished with your study, the German government are supposed to revoke your student visa.
But as a Germany educated Ausländer, you would have a for example, Jobssuchende Visum, which allows you to stay in Germany for up to 18 months until you find a job
I guess what I'm trying to say is, you can definitely stay here in Germany, but you need the proper papers 🙂
@tame forum Officially A2
technically speaking though, before I finished my studies I already got a zulassung to another study, that is how I manage to do it I guess 🙂
holy damn
because all the classes are unfortunately in German
after 1,5 year, I officially became C1
would it have helped my studies? Not really, because Fachdeutsch is not taught at the Deutschkurs
it is surprising that you were successful in securing admssion with A2 in a full german course
lol
@lunar garden Sure, but if the uni starts next year, I really have no clue how that works
unless you can enroll right now
my uni vorfachstudium is literally next semester lol
in this case, I can't help you anymore
but my studium is next year
you better ask the International Office
im enrolling around next week so, I guess you are right 🙂
Yeah, because if Iwere a an official, I'd see you as an Ausländer that I can just kick out, @lunar garden , because your study is next year
@tame forum sorry, just saw your message. The Aüslanderbehörde told me 3-4 weeks is about when I could expect it
but like I said, my vorfachstudium is starting this october so... 🤔
@tame forum it was according to the HS website, an international course, and according to the syllabus, most of them are 50% German 50% English, when I saw it the first time
and the addmission for the IT Studiengang was a minimum of A2. Heck, even a fellow student from the same country came in WITHOUT any A2 cert
he came only with A2 and B1 hours
you'd be surprised
I'm just saying, be prepared
because my course, I had basically 90% German, 10% English
wait as in? they might start from the first year it self u mean?
I can of course answer the professor in English or answer the questions in English as well
yah they keep throwing that 50/50 everywehere
that is possible, but the language used is German overall
a friend of mine was enrolled in TUM for its IT course, and she told me it was "full English"
kinda expecting a switcharoo in the story rn
but frankly AFAIK you CAN do full English the first year, because you have all the subjects for that, but in order to finish, the third semester you have to finish all the subjects that are held in German
I have never spoken to her again since I last met her two years ago
but judging from her FB photos, that pops up everynow and then, although mostly #throwbackthursdays of her travelling in Europe, she's still here
not sure which company
yah for my uni the first year is common for all engineering students. so i guess they are mostly gonna stick to eng. nonetheless thenks for the headsup
this is only for bachelor's you're talking about, right?
I was talking about Master's
oh m bachelors
Bachelor's that I've seen in my old HS
okay well you're just wrong then, you can highkey do full English master's
I'm in one
they CAN of course do full Enlgish in the first semester
no problem, that one's all English
but I think starting from second year onwards, you have everything in German
there definitely exist plenty of programs that are full English throughout
for master's
one of my friends is about to defend her thesis and she's still A2
granted, obvs this depends on field, outside of computer science it would be significantly harder
In the final Thesis
depending on the professor, you can of course do it all in English instead of German
you are not allowed to do your thesis in German in my master's program afaik because it is an English program
I've met a few people in my current project who'd done their courses in English instead of German
All I can say is, they're missing out
Im currently doing an all-English masters program.
Id be dead trying to learn this stuff in German 😅
doing my program in German would be kinda counterproductive imo
the industry's all in English anyway
all-English master's programs are becoming more popular afaik because they bring in so many international students
so for fields where you want that, they're more in-vogue ig
Yeah, the one im in is roughly 50% international
"the industry's all in English"
Ehh....idk, man
it definitely is bruh
I do data science/machine learning
it's very English-dominated
tho of course speaking german if you end up working in Germany doesn't hurt
yeah, but which company?
lots... of them?
Nope
I'm not talking about a specific company
not in Germany
unless you're one of those guys who wants the degree and then leave?
lol literally people from my degree who don't speak German have been hired at a variety of companies in Berlin
some places require some German but plenty don't
yeah, Berlin has plenty of startups, and in English, I'd give you that
well yeah and if you wanna work in machine learning/data science/NLP, which are what I study, you'll probably end up in Berlin if you're in Germany
Yeah, the one im in is roughly 50% international
same with mine, but afaik ours has in the study regulations that each class has to be 50% international students
at least I think I remember reading that
idk why I get a bit worked up about this
but I guess if it's possible, why not
more interantional experience for Germany as well
but for some reason, I'm also getting a bit bothered now
maybe I'm too Germanized
lol
lol I mean not sure why it would bother you that a degree in an English-dominated field that's trying to import talented students would be offered in full English
Maybe the "English-Dominated" field thing is what bothers me
I currently work in Image Processing and Data Science as well, in semi-conductor industrie
but it's heavy on Physics
and EVERYBODY speaks German
All the technical stuff are also in German
I mean, that's a different and highly specific field tho
journals we read are in English, sure
and I mean speaking German isn't gonna hurt for sure
when we talk with customers in the Netherlands, we use English, sure
or when other partners from China, Taiwan, Italy, US
but "English-Dominated" is what bothered me there somehow
or maybe I'm having jealosy and Old-man syndrome
🤣
I mean I'm sure you can get plenty of internships and jobs at companies where you speak to each other in German in my field, and I'm sure there are some that require German fluency, but it also would not be difficult to find one with nothing but elementary German knowledge, and that's what makes it count as English-dominated in my book
you probably couldn't get super far in my field without speaking at least B2/C1 English
"Well, back in my day, I had to work my ass off to study the language and assimilate as well! You foreigners don't get it what it means to be a citizen here"
*Jealousiy, Old-Man and Xenophobic syndrome"
🤣
smh I mean not needing to speak German isn't the same as not learning German
I'm literally sending this from my DaF course
I'm just trying to say something about my frustration that is somehow nagging at the back of my head
it's not because of you personally, I'm sorry
it's just something that's naggig for some reason
I mean I can see how it would seem somewhat entitled for people like me, who are native English speakers, but this also benefits people from other countries who have already learned English and haven't yet reached a high level of German; there's lots of people from Asia and Latin America in tech here
I'm not gonna argue with you. You're right, it does benefit those that have learned English and haven't yet reach that high
So this only applies to CS people?
that's what we're largely talking about, yeah
oh
Anything to do with CS, IT, and I guess DS, yes, you could say that
other fields may have English-language master's as well but not nearly to the same extent as tech
well i have 4 years to improve my german before trying to move there
my field is not CS unfortunately
Sorry for the off topic question but do any of you know a good website to buy and sell used cars in germany?
it's not necessarily off-topic but unfortunately I don't
yea no it’s on-topic (nor do I)
I've seen cars on ebay-kleinanzeigen but I can't speak for how good it is for that stuff
^ And yeah, that‘s possible as well
ok thanks
@leaden tendon there are several pages, like "wirverkaufenihrauto" usw. --- just use the custom search engine and write "used cars selling and buying Germany"
I've somehow managed to pass the DSH exam but it seems that Uni Heidelberg doesnt accept any external DSH results
Does anyone have any knowledge about Uni Heidelberg's DSH rules?
@young iron your best bet is mailing, calling the university itself. Noone can give u a better answer.
Afaik, some unis dont accept DSH [dont ask me why they hate it] u can try giving thr Goethe c2. Theur results r quick but they r on the exoensive side. But u can be damn sure every uni is gonna except Goethe tests
Really? I thought some unis don't accept goethe also.
No its never that they dont accept it, BUT if for example a uni needs C1, they will write "Telc - c1, ösd- c1, goethe c2 cert"
Basically some unis will ask for a higher cert because Goethe certs are easier to get
Yeah
But some unis will also accept goethe c1 if they ask for c1. I.e. they will consider it equal to the telc c1
Jus depends from uni to uni tbh
Are you sure you're not allowed to use an external dsh qualification? Who told you you can't? @young iron
And goethe knows this. Maybe thats y they r a bit on the expensive side
This seems to imply you can use external certificates including DSH-2?
Or if you don't have one, you take their test.
Yah i think the person jus read wrong
Maybe. But like you said, it's always best to just ask the uni directly, of course.
Sometimes multiple times just in case the first person told you nonsense. 😄
I mean, you never know.
This sounds like something my dad would say.
But if u have an email, and if they backtracked, cud u sue?
I mean an email is their word right?
Maybe, but are they legally obligated to do what they say in an email? That's the real question.
True
Since unis are usually allowed to pick and choose who they accept (I think?), then there's no obligation from them even if it's their screw up, probably.
But I'm not sure really how that kind of thing works.
We need a german lawyer on GlaD
Thanks for the replies guys,
My knowledge about it is solely based on what my friends said
I couldnt the page Base sent before
Now that i read it, i think im fine
Its just that in my Acceptance Letter the line "DSH muss bestanden werden" was marked
Thats what made me suspicious in the first place
I passed the Uni Mannheim DSH with a DSH-3
I have to take part in the "mündlicher prüfung" now
Ohh okay. Good luck.
Thanks!
Guys question, so on my Aufenthaltstitel it says this line:
Beschäftigung im Kalenderjahr der Erteilung nur während der Ferienzeit erlaubt.
Like I don't have language classes anymore, could I start working or like how does this work?
I gave a language test and waiting on the result atm, applied for a second language test but it's just a second try at the same. Don't feel like working illegally as well.
Please advico
Only in the school holiday time you can work @tropic edge
Or for you in the Semesterferien I believe
smol question: when a person outside from EU buy sim card. [m gonna buy one from ALDI/Lidl] everyone has to give a verification thingy. do i jus have to show my passport/student visa? or provide photocopy of my passport/student visa for them to keep?
i just showed some funny guy my ID on a webcam
yez, but ur EU n stuff.
ah yes, postident, the thing that non-eu citizens can do, and specific EU citizens can't
the mobile thing is called Postident?
if it's postident as i think, you have to show them your passport
well, i can provide them with photocopies too if they want idm.
but do they normally?
i never had to do anything of the sort for mobile stuff so i don't know, but everything else (online banks, credit cards ordered online) uses postident
they just ask you to show your face and your passport clearly
ohkk. and if i go in the store and buy it?
you won't need any online procedure if you buy in person
ohkk
if you buy it at the store
you get simcard and you have to do it anyway
either at their point or online
many points that sell simcards dont do the identification thing
like markets
yah idm doing that. and since i will be living in an airbnb the first few days i cant trust delivery and stuff
so i will prolly jus find an aldi
i bought mine at rewe i think and then i just called them on video-chat and went with the procedure online
it's a supermarket chain
yea its just a supermarket like aldi or whatever
ohh
a chain
(way better than aldi btw)
ok this is insider info, in what aspect is it better?
rewe has free wifi
yes but not for everything. Also aldi lacks several items human beings kind of need
idk if aldi does
rewe is also the same chain as penny, which is a discounter version of it basically
and penny is pretty good in my experience
i don't think my rewe has free wifi 🤔 should check
same tbh
we recently got a rewe close to us, before that i never went to rewe
makes sense, right
aldi sucks so much btw. The other day I went there and they just didn't have any sugar at all, except for the one for cakes
oof
lol
OoF
it feels like it's stocked by a single man who eats only ready meals and occasionally gets some cake by his granny
like wtf
which aldi tho, i'm in the aldi nord part of germany
or was it some other tho?
i know some supermarket chain had plenty of problems
and was going pleite
they don't look like they're closing but if they're going to be replaced by like, penny, hopefully they will
like, it's the only supermarket i can reach by foot and i hate that it's shit
the other one is a turkish supermarket which has interesting stuff too, but not everything i need, and it's expensive overall because it's mostly imported stuff
haven't seen one in dortmund i don't think 🤔
Aldi has the best hazelnut cream tho
hm, see if i can find it next time then
but i found a dark chocolate cream at rewe and 🤤
Hands down. I've tried rewe, I've tried Kaufland, none of them have it as good as Aldi. Aldi is by far the least oily in comparison to all the others, also least creamy.
Take a pic ploxo
but generally i use nutella so ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Nutella is too oily for me, it's sweetness is pretty nice tho
Do try it out if you visit another country because the recipe changes
Anyway i misremembered, i actually got the dark cream at müller. Here's a pic
As a bonus, random other stuff from my kitchen
thanks it was rather expensive cough cough
Throw it out wtf
ok that's not healthy fox xD
why would i, then i would buy a new one and put it there
Someone on Berlin's expat group was giving away a big jar of Nutella that he opened and found out it would make him fat
lul
I'm not a healthy human being 😞
i cant just throw it away out of respect for the monkeys that got kicked out of their homes during the production of palm oil
I concur
donate it to someone who wants stomach ache and diarrhoea
i could have spared you that last, though relevant, thing, but i just like typing it out to flex my british spelling privilege
fuck they're ugly tho
i once saw a statement by nutella, or actually maybe it was an FAQ on their website, "why do you use palm oil" and the answer was basically "everything else sucks, we tried. Deal with it"
lol

someone hypothetically doesnt register at the Einwohnermeldeamt in 7 days, and does it in 21 instead. what happens/ how do they get punished?
You usually have to pay a fee of 20-30€ if you can't provide a sufficient reason for delaying your registration
Source: https://umziehen.de/an-ab-ummelden/wohnsitz-anmelden-192#h2_summary_3 (this is a gov source)
oh okk. i kinda have a good reason tho. my alien office was like they do both the City registration [Meldebescheinigung] and the issuance of "Aufenthaltstitel". i have an email from them too. however since alien offices are fully booked i Got an appointment which would make me 22 days late than what the official law says.
but idk what else i can do. Alien office is saying come 22 days later and register. Law is saying do it in a week
n also a tiny bit confused since i dont think any website or video i have ever seen says that u can get Meldebscheinigung at an aliens office loll
I'd just let the Meldeamt know. You can provide any kind of correspondence as proof, which should be enough
right now i am just writing it up to me prolly not being an EU national
@exotic barn the funny thing is, i tried asking them too. and somehow the ausländerbheorde answered me. i didnt even send them the email
lol
but yah thanks for the link
The worst that can happen AFAIK is you get a mouthful and also you need to pay that fee
Otherwise, I had registered one month after I came into Stuttgart, but I had told them on the spot as I was registering, that my passport was on hold by the Irish embassy due to visa application, and therefore not possible for me to register
Just got a “oh okay okay, no problem” from the lady, and I didn’t pay anything
i registered late because there was just so much stuff to get done and i wasn't sure about anything, and some fundamental stuff kept going wrong. I don't remember paying any fee though, maybe i'm so cute that they let it slide. Uwu.
I'd say that's because you're a European
if you're smiling and being nice, you're basically going to do pretty well. Being honest is also important, obviously.
Yeah, from what ive heard/experienced, its more of something they use to punish the arrogant/defiant. Most people who have a reason or show some sort of effort to address it dont have a problem
I am a non-european and I registered late -- in fact, I actually showed up without an anmeldung for my ausländerbehörde "appointment" (aka waiting in line outside the place from 3am) for my student residence permit on my last legal visa-free day because I couldn't get an early enough appointment at the bürgeramt. I did, however, bring the documents I would need for an anmeldung. The lady I spoke to at the ausländerbehörde was annoyed and told me I could wait at the bürgeramt without an appointment just like I'd done for my residence permit, but they still granted my residence permit without much fuss since I had all the documents showing I legally lived in Berlin.
The Bürgeramt where I got my anmeldung did not react negatively at all because I'd made my appointment well within two weeks of moving there and it's hardly my fault they were swamped
I've never made an appointment, I just went there when i needed every time :^)
for my ummeldung after changing place i had to basically run across the whole city to a different office because they were about to close when i found out they were too swamped, but i lucked out and did it even though I had to wait like four hours in line
lol making an appointment is how you don't have to wait in line 😉
except when making an appointment makes something happen in two months' time
4h < 2 months
lol I'm not sitting in a waiting room for 2 months and when I don't need the thing literally immediately ¯_(ツ)_/¯
or you do the actually smart thing and schedule well before you need the thing but we can't all be like that
In Berlin it's nearly impossible to book everything online. You had to wait from 3 am at the Ausländerbehörde too, right? Sometimes waiting those four hours is the smart thing to do. I mean story books and newspapers exist for a reason😅
in fact, I actually showed up without an anmeldung for my ausländerbehörde "appointment" (aka waiting in line outside the place from 3am) for my student residence permit on my last legal visa-free day
waited longer than four hours for that tho lol
but for an anmeldung? I'd rather just book it in advance and get in and out of the bürgeramt in 15 minutes
they're not gonna do anything to you time-wise if you book an appointment as soon as you're able to get one, and unless you literally just moved to germany and it's your first anmeldung that you need for like a bank account and shit, it's absolutely not time-sensitive to get it
I mean, I did the exact same thing (showed up without an appointment on the last day of visa free period)
You dont need a bank account for a short term visa (in my case, one to last until my actual appointment a month later)
Think I needed my Anmeldung and there was a small fee of like 15-20€, but thats its 🤷🏻♂️
I didn't need a bank account for my visa, the bank account was so I could like... pay for things and get my stipend deposited
they were fine with just a copy of my lease rather than an anmeldung, just acted kinda pissy that I didn't have the anmeldung yet
For a tourist visa or a student visa?
Because for a student, I thought it‘s obligatory....
Or with a Verpflichtungserklärung
Student visa
for a student, it's obligatory to have proof of finances, and I have a stipend so I didn't need to do blocked account stuff
I just had to bring my letter of award where it says how much my stipend is
Oh yeah that‘s what you need to do 🙂
You didn‘t mention about the stipend, which made it confusing (I also got in without any proof of blocked account, only stipend letter)
yeah no I didn't bring it up before cause didn't think it was super relevant to the anmeldung requirement
a stipend is kinda like a scolarship from the state yeah? which covers ur food and stuff?
I mean you can get a stipend from a private organization, doesn't have to be from the state, but mine is from the state yes
the distinction between a stipend and a scholarship, in my book, is that a stipend is paid out more regularly (in my case, I'm paid monthly) whereas a scholarship is usually a lump sum
but idk if that's a formal distinction or not
For the German government, as long as you have the monthly income or a lumpsome that covers the requirements, you‘re all clear 🙂
How do Germans feel about those who fly other country’s flags outside their house?
I personally find it tacky, sorry to say @sturdy shore
I think EU people are more or less ambivalent towards their flags, and will only have them during official times
It‘s VERY easy to spot which house/WG is American...
I can tell you that in Indonesia we‘re also only have it up at houses during independence day, or the day of heroes, where we have it half mast.
Ach du Scheiße, ich wurde ausgesetzt
Ja ursprünglich aus dort
But except for family ties, I have no cultural ties to the country whatsoever anymore
Been away for close to 8 years. Pretty much a foreigner there nowadays
Haha, ach so
basically the only flags I'd expect to see randomly hanging anywhere here are the american one (but there aren't many americans in my city) or the turkish one (people even have it printed on their cars or clothes lol)
as someone whose family doesn't even fly its own one on important national days in my home country, it looks rather stupid if i'm honest
germans will probably have a similar view to rainforest_runner
meanwhile, my home town
switzerland definitely has a very different attitude to flags than germany
swiss people are turkish people who stay at home
(the flag with the ibex at the bottom and a blue/yellow thing in the corner is the canton, the one with an ibex under a gate is the city)
we personally hang the cantonal flag out of the window at national day
and that’s it
yep, I know that. But I can't guess the canton :D
wait you know the cantonal flags but not which cantons they belong to?
no i can tell that if it isn't the national flag it's going to be the cantonal flag
but the answer to that question could easily be "yes". I have decent visual memory but not as good an ability to link what i see to, say, names
here you go
yep, i was sure i remembered it from somewhere. I've been through graubünden recently
smh didn’t even come visit me (I wasn’t there anyway probably)
i was just passing through with the bus :D
italy-germany via the A13?
and had slept a grand total of maybe 2 hours between dortmund and there
yes
but the other way around
I thought most people preferred to go straight through gotthard for that
actually it was dortmund to messina by bus. An experience i will not easily want to repeat
yeah but the bus probably had stops planned thereabout
i say probably, i was there. It had stops planned
oof that’s a journey
and a half
at least
but hey i got to finally see with my own eyes how overrated milan is and boy
well, a friend of mine drove a car from Oslo to the Pyrenees, picking me up halfway along the way
i didn't expect it to be this overrated
by car it's a bit different, though still tiresome
and then on the way back he dropped me in paris and I took a train home
but how do swiss people feel about foreign country flags hanging about from private homes? I don't expect that to be a welcome sight
I think he was on the road for 5 days
alone? Wow
oh k
he had two friends with him since oslo (flew in from finland and albania, don’t ask) and then me and another friend for the last two days on top
so actually opposite problem from being alone
alright, that's nice
i wanted to go by car as well but eh, money
alright, that's nice
Sooo, apparently ING Diba rejected my application for a Girokonto?
What do I do now? 😅 I kinda need a German account for my Expatrio to send money to
sounds like you weren't applying for just any girokonto but one with some benefits. All banks in germany must offer a basiskonto that they can never refuse to anyone, so if all else fails, you will always have that option
Hm. Any reccomendations besides ING? They were kinda my first choice 😅
Was just trying to get a nice and simple online account
they should offer a basiskonto as anyone else. I don't know if it's different for online banks but it would be weird
unfortunately i can't open an online account in germany for other (memey) reasons so i don't have much experience in terms of online banks
I think ING is Netherlands based. I just saw it reccomended a lot for German accounts and it had nice features
No idea if that makes a difference
not a lawyer but surely it depends on whether they operate in germany rather than where they're based. The law is intended to prevent discrimination
Idk, Im just trying my best to navigate all the german webpages 😅
Deutsche Bank has an English one, but already fought with them for 2 months trying to open one
note that i also don't know whether you need a specific type of account for that blocked account business, i don't know if it can be done with a basiskonto
Not trying to open a blocked account
Expatrio is my blocked one
But it requires a normal one to deposit into
(Also, already got my visa 👌)
you can also try other less basic options to see if they work first
checking of course whether you match the requirements. But basiskontos have none by definition
they are intended, among other things, to solve the problem of homeless people formerly not being able to open accounts and thus not being able to get out of their situation
🤷 I guess I can try again with em. Not sure what I did wrong the first time though
How does one get a Hausarzt in Germany? I want to get a check-up done but whenever I call and ask, I hear "wir nehmen zurzeit keine neuen Patienten auf"
Would it help to call my Krankenkasse and ask them to find someone for me? Do they even do that
No, it‘s best that you call them. But in my personal experience I‘ve never been refused as I called them. I guess they just still had space for me.
Btw, do I have to tell my old Hausarzt that I moved away?
I never had that done before, I could be taking some poor sod‘s chance to go to a doctor 😅
Okay, think im going to just go with N26 and open a "real" bank account another day.
Anyone got a "refer a friend" code they want me to use? Think a few people here have an account with them
I have, but Spark can take this one
woot
@humble bough nupe, hit me up
Lunch money
lmao yah it's bethanyt9028
Done 👌
god that's like 3 döner holla
Dont think the reward goes out til I make my first deposit, but the codes all good
Your Döners are 5€ each?
nah usually 4
The big ones 👀
but I get cheese so 4.5€
I get mine for 2.5 now and they are the perfect meat taste
goddamn where are you
Theres a nice 3€ one in Hamburg I like
ah see I'm in Wilmersdorf we're bougie down here
the one closest to me is v mediocre but it's like right next to my apartment
favorite place so far is spicy döner in Charlottenburg
they're a lil cheaper I think but idr exactly
def not 2.5€
Yeah this doesn't sell to anyone almost just regulars
oooh nice
Me and another old man basically
for some reaeson i thought 4 euro was a national price
But Wilmersdorf should have more shawarma places right?
my local one was 3.5€ until later this year smhhhh
For the chain brands, thats what they charge here @lilac orchid
uh maybe but not at the bit of it I'm in
there are a fair few but they're over more central, I'm like right at the edge of Wilmersdorf
3.8 seems to be what I see now, got so angry that they upped it from 3.5 idk why
lmao
I literally once showed up to my local one, ordered, and then was 50 cents short because the price changed while I was gone
Yeah with döner/shawarma accessibility is key regardless of price and taste
but they just gave it to me anyway
dont wanna lose a customer over upping their prices
lmao they couldn't lose me they're like the only thing in my neighborhood open late
lmao
Yessss
Whenever its like 3 am and I get that stomach growl
Boom instant trip to Döner place
when my bf from norway visited I took him to get döner and when I translated him the price for ours (he wanted to pay) he was all like "wait, for both?"
LOL
it was hilarious ngl
Hahaha
meat is definitely too cheap in Germany
well, we don't have customs charges so that's probably a big factor in that
€5 for 200 gram of Impossible meat/Bug protein meat is a bit expensive tho @foggy prism
that’s what, 20 euro for a kilo? that’s cheap
Eh, really?
well it’s cheaper than what meat should be
and also cheaper than what I’m used to for meat ^^
meat here starts at sth like 30/kilo except for garbage stuff
meat that isn't good
Cause I would call common meat garbage stuff
low controls, high amounts of needless antibiotics, inhumane conditions to keep the price low
but those 5€ weren't just for the meat, a döner includes more than just the meat so i think we're getting a bit out of scope here
that sorta things
That's most common thing then I guess
indeed
I agree with it being not how it should be
it’s one of those things where democracy is just failing
cause people see that a new law would raise their food prices
and revolt against it
completely ignoring other things
It would be easier, if people would be confronted with it more openly
i don't think it ever got to that point, sasha
Almost no one would do that stuff themselves, but if they get served it, it's fine
we have extra costs on fuel and if that hasn't lead to revolts...
even just protest tbh
if you say let's raise the fuel prices, there will be a lot of objection
as there always is
current politics revolve around finding the stuff most people won't object to in order to gain voters, that's why the policies end up being so ineffective and half-arsed
in fact, protests seem to be the way to go to get stuff done, rather than reject policies you dislike. So i don't think it's realistic to say extra taxes on meat for environmental and ethical reasons would fail. In fact, that's exactly what does work in our current society when doing the right thing means going against convenience and economic interests
it's not the people who reject these policies, it's the companies who would lose from them, and they have more leverage
it takes a lot of people to get a government to do something, without even the guarantee that it will be done right. So much so that stuff tends to go wrong before their needs are met, and it potentially degenerates into terrorism-like conditions (see: jilet jaunes, hong kong and others)
where so much momentum was needed in order to cause any change at all, that once that change happens it's not even worth it to stop, and the demands just increase because at that point, the protesters can afford to keep going and ask for more
The need for worldwide proletarian revolution is greater than ever
Is it allowed to post a wg-gesucht ad here?
I am so desperate that I found one where I'd basically get a rent cut gegen Mithilfe
and actually might take it up
Please talk me out of it
@tropic edge what does mithilfe include or mean?
Quite a bit. Renovieren, streichen, mit Recycling helfen,Teppichfliesen auslegen, Bett Bauen. Something along the lines of 8 hours a week of work.
60 year old lady 🙂
every week?
She says the house is an absolute mess, so yeah I guess
so are you supposed to help out in other apartments aswell
nope just her's
i see
walk her dog when she's sick and take care of him too 🙂
I don't know it will be calculated after I move in and start working. She wrote something around like 160 a month
I'm only staying a month anyway
32 hours a month is atleast 300 euro worth
and she might force you to do more than that
i would not take it
what kind of contract would that even be anyway? 😅
I need to find a place in 4 days and the options aren't looking so hot
I'm not getting replies and almost no one is posting ads
in that case it might be an ok temporary solution
don't think there is too much of a risk
the question will be if you have the time to help her out 8 hours a week
Yeah kind of free, was looking for work anyway
this is actually a good option now that I think about it
Thanks ai, I'll actually take this up seriously.
@warped atlas thanks for the direct answer. I don't plan on doing it myself at all (I personally find patriotism annoying)
note that none of those who answered are German xD
i doubt german redditors represent their country very well on average
@tropic edge be very very careful if it comes to the contract. And hence that the monthly hours will be like absolute ripping you off or just avoid paying minimum wage etc.
Just ask her to show you how much an hour of work would be paid for.
I personally would not recommend that kind of contract, not even for a short time....
I mean - what if you, for example, do something wrong while working for her and she says you have to pay for your mistake etc. or she is not satisfied at all?
Oh yes I am worried about that too, I sent her a message for more details and pictures. Waiting on the reply now, but really first person to get to me will be the person I move in with.
I leave everything to the last minute and now I deal with it's consequences. Can't find a single good place.
meat is definitely too cheap in Germany
lol
how can something be "too cheap"
and how does increasing the price through law regulations increase the quality, the cheapest will still be the worst :')
or do you want to put some more regulations ontop of it, and create Fleischpreisbindungsgesetz? :D
@tropic edge uhhhh i hope you didn’t sign that contract
Cause this shit smells illegal
Really that bad?
Idk it's a good deal for me
I'll probably not sign one, I'm only staying for one month
It's so confusing
And I can't find someone to move in with from friends or anything
Yeah ok haha
Is there anywhere on this server I should go for help with making a German CV?
Sure, you can ask here.
Aight, still working on my draft, just wasnt sure what was the right channel for that
guys
I want to study in Jena for Informatik but I realised that it has Numerus Clasur
and my Abitur note is super bad, what do I do? 😦
Well, first thing I need to do is update mine lol
Worked the same job for two years, havent touched it since I started that
Than just add the old job to it
Also, I heard German CVs have you include your picture?
Yes it should
Or is that only sometimes
Well then, im not going to add one until I get around to paying for/taking a nice photoshoot 😅
mine doesn’t have a pic either but I’d include one if I ever needed one seriously, like for a job application and not just pro forma
I plan to get a fancy one eventually. Just not at the moment
I currently just have a CV to send to HR every semester when I get a new contract :P
since at that point I already have my job and they just need it to have it on file somewhere I don’t care enough to get a good image taken
Fun trivia: I actually wrote the job description for my last job 😅
They didnt have one (no one did it before me)
So I wrote the "official" duties of it
(At HR's request*)
So should I just plop a screenshot of the CV down here, drop a pdf or what? 🤷
whatever you do, hide the personal data :P
it's best if you find someone who can help you in private with things like these
Like I said I can help haha
Well, this is what I got xD I had forgotten I had already tried to "germanize" it for the uni (they asked for it for some reason), so not much editing was needed. If theres stuff I could improve/Germanize, let me know though 👀 (thanks for any help you can give!)
@fair talon do you need this for normal work or university?
This is the question now
First job im looking at is a Student Research Assistant job at my university
(already admitted to the university lol)
ahhh than this is fine
