any extra money you get, would be for your own use
or if you want
you gather it to pay for the next year
I have enough for both years already 👀
Im only underbudget after all expenses by ~3-400
So extra money = food money 🤤
@tropic edge ok then order an espresso, in italian cafés, if you can. Try it both with and without sugar (on different occasions: too much coffee is not good at all, and espresso is not diluted like american-style coffee) and see what you like best
personally i enjoy the flavour of coffee but i stopped drinking it since years. It doesn't make me feel very good overall, and i prefer tea
I'm trying the latte macchiato right now
I'll note that down: espresso in Italian cafes with and with sugar
Issa good drink!!
I'll try the espresso of this next time
"of this"? 🤔
If you scroll up a bit you'll see what I'm referring to
The Ja! Latte Macchiato I just tried. I will try the red one next, and if I remember correctly it said espresso on it but I'm not sure
that's not espresso then :D
You coffee purists will bring this world to pieces
you have to get it from a coffee machine or a coffee maker
*peace
otherwise it's not coffee, it's just a coffee-flavoured drink
especially when it's industrial stuff
You know it's funny, when one's standards are so high for coffee, one probably won't enjoy the really cheap coffee of the market
I for instance can't really tell the difference between the two, unless I try something really good and drink it often. I've had good coffee at friends but like once a month, so I forget how good it tastes compared to bad coffee
What do you mean Sascha?
I mean, I got used to good coffee
but I don’t have easy access to it anymore
and now I again don’t really mind it
Aha ok, that's good I guess
But you still long for that good coffee sometimes right?
like, I still prefer the good stuff, but honestly I’m not even good at brewing coffee
Jus be like me and drink milk w/o coffee.
Coffee is life
How is Italian espresso like? @tight kelp
Cause this girl from Italy said to me, she doesn't drink as much coffee here because you can't get espresso.
And I was really confused what that's meant to mean, since our coffee is espresso based also.
well, the preparation matters I suppose. an espresso cooker makes quite different coffee
which I, for unhealthy reasons, tend to drink in ever so slightly larger portions than you’d drink espressos
you know. if a doppio is two espressos I guess my regular homemade coffee would be a quadruppio
(quadruplo)
that's indeed not very healthy :P
we call it lungo btw, not sure i've heard doppio 🤔
@solemn bay well I never had australian expresso for comparison :P You should ask her
it's served in really small cups, it looks really dark
I mean you're just using espresso machine with ground beans and water, right?
afaik ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I feel like Italian and Australian coffee it probably basically the same.
if she means the flavour, then it's probably the quality of the beans themselves. That changes a lot
if not that, then she's just being a typical italian xD
well actually it would be a quadruplo with milk I spose. I just put on the espresso pot, pour it into a cup and add some milk as usual
So it says on hochschulstart that an offer exists in one of my applications, and if I take it all the other ones are withdrawn.
Is this the last stage? Like after I accept it I get enrolled?
Well, when I received an offer, the actual enrollment happened after completing a few more steps (paying the semester fee, submitting health insurance, other paperwork, etc)
But that was just for the formal Enrollment certificate
But in terms of the process, it's done right? like I got a Studienplatz?
I believe if its been offered and you accept it, yeah
After that, it's just Papierkram, Papierkram, Papierkram 😅
But an offer is an offer
I see thanks, if anyone else could confirm it would be nice
yah...... when the uni offers u a place. its just that. an offer. u aint an official student yet. only after enrolling at the unniversity do u become a student
so that was my question, if I accept the offer do I enroll? if not what is it then
You accept, and they reserve a place for you, which, upon submitting finalized versions of some key documents, turns into a certified enrollment
the "reserving " thing is i guess due to it being a restricted course
no restriction courses: i jus got my admission letter. and i enroll physcially at the uni in october
Think of it as conditional enrollment on the condition that you submit the required documents and fees by deadline (usually the start of the semester) 👀
ok thanks guys
No problem. Congrats btw 😊
thanks!
what would you say is a typical time between interview and a job offer in Germany? or does it vary too much
I know that my current company had 4 levels of vetting, all in the span of 1,5 months.
In another (previous interview) I was shortlisted by TI, got the call and was interviewed directly, and finally given the „sorry“ about 3 weeks later
Ah, I meant I‘m working at another company now 😃
@lunar garden i waited 6 weeks for my results but this could vary depending on holiday time etc. or do you mean you lost your result and want to see your results again?
that already answered my question @icy mist
except, another question, where did you get your result, is it mailed?
got it mailed
cool, should be a week or two more then ^^;
i asked the people administering the test when I should expect my results and how and they told me within four weeks by mail, but it took longer
damn. goethe is way faster
its weird when language test like test daf and telc take like 1 to 1.5 months to correct. soeaking gets graded on the spot. which leaves listening (fixed answers which the corrector can refer to) , reading (fixed answers) , and writing [which is the only paper that needs time]
Quick question: For those recycling machines at Lidl and Aldi, do you take the cap off the bottle?
👌 usually we take them off in the US, but we recycle in bulk rather than individually.
Thanks for a quick answer
Why do you take them off?
^
We don't take them off, but if the bottle has any dent, you.are.fucked.
Guys if I want to work in Germany, now that I'm a bit confident in my German what are cool jobs I can take up? I want to try something out of service in restaurants. A cool experience is what I'm looking for.
Hotels,Warehouse,Supermarket,Outbound Jobs @tropic edge
Depends
What ya really wanna do
Something nerdy, like with lots of information. I worked at a book sale before and had to learn so many titles. I would like something like that
Something were I'm constantly engaged physically and mentally
Only physically or only mentally works as well
I thought about doing construction but idk if that needs some type of Ausbildung or schooling
Construction needs an Ausbildung
Do you Know the difference between cow and pig when it comes to meat? @tropic edge
If so
Try being a butcher salesman
why would a butcher need a salesman?
I can't sell pig tho, for personal reasons
muslim/vegan detected
eid mubarak
Thanks mate, to you to if you celebrate
ye i do
@tame forum cause the butchers produce the stuff
Lol
They don’t have time for that dude
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAt02x4Pplc&t=1705s ist das der österreichische Aktzent?
Mietanfang : xx.xx Mietende: yy.yy
Danach verlängert sich der Mietvertrag stillschweigend.
That means if I don‘t do anything, my contract will extend by itself, or?
Correct
thats a cool contract
I need help picking a city to move to. I'll be studying in a TU, Maschinenbau to be exact. Now I've been staying in Berlin for the past couple of months and I'm not sure I'd want to go to the TU here. I just want to move to a place with relatively not expensive rent, cool atmosphere, and so. I don't really know what I'm looking for but shoot me some ideas
i dont live in germany or anything. but theres TU Dresden..... and its in the East so might be cheap
I've been advised to not go to TU Dresden because it's in the east and not so Arab friendly, but I've never visited
i mean there are like 9 main TU's n you can easily go through them one by one by ur priorities.
there are also other TU's like Clausthal, Dortmund, Kaiselautern and maybe more which might fit u better
jus search TU or something on google and u will get a list of all the TU's in germany
I heard that TU Darmstadt is also pretty good and well connected (as in job prospects)
Otherwise, check KIT out (Karlsruhe), not a TU but also one of the very well-known ones in the south
Or you could also go to TUM, but then it‘s not gonna be cheap
I‘m looking to expand RL friends, and of course the usual suggestion in Germany is to join a Verein. Yes of course it‘s not just for sports.
But what‘s the difference between that and joining a Gym membership and going to the classes there, however? Other than Vereins that have other things except sports.
People who have joined different Vereins, even at different cities, what do you think makes a good Verein to you? (Other than it has activities of your interest)
I used to play volleyball in a Verein for quite some time. A good Verein usually has lots of people you get along with. In addition to that, we often went out and did stuff together (gaming nights, etc)
So is it sorta normal, to like, jump between two-three volleyball Vereins because the first two wasn‘t as fun?
Heck, is that even possible? Within the same city? (Scarcity issue)
Schach
Volleyball
Geht alles
Gibt sogar Diabetes Vereine
🤷🏼♂️
Jup
guys what does AöR mean in front of compnay names?
i didnt understand the definition on Google
what i understood is its a governmental company(?)
yea its basically a public service institution thats backed by law and funded by the state
like public broadcasting services
achso. Thanksss
Does anyone have experience with N26? And paying the semester fees?
Because the uni requires a Bankauszug for enrollment
Kontoauszug*
N26 is a complete online Bank I believe
Therefore they don’t have Kontoauszug
Maybe only via there app
There is a Kontoauszug
Just go online and print it yourself
I used that to apply for UK visa last time
No issue
The Uni needs a Kontoauszug? 🤔 never heard that....
Hooo....
Well, screenshots no, but Kontoauszug from N26 has enough just like any other....
Let‘s see if I can find a clipped image of that...
I mean...what else do you wanna see?
Isn‘t that the same from a regular one from Sparkasse?
I don't know @warped atlas I'm still not in germany
I will open a bank account and apply for insurance sometime next week
That notification is more or less you need to give proof to TU Berlin that you‘ve transferred the money for the semester
Which is kinda weird...(backwards, I mean) cause when I was in HS Mannheim, I didn‘t need to prove this, I think....
Although that was for the subsequent semesters. The first one, I can‘t remember
also when I apply for a student health insurance say TK or AOK, do I need to prove somehow that I'm admitted?
because I only have the Zulassungsbescheinigung
and the uni requires a Versicherungsbescheinung for the Immatrikulation
Than you have to show them that you got a Versicherung
show who? the uni?
Yes
yeah but do I need somehting for the insurance company?
how do they know I am a student?
Tell them.
And my guess would be that you show them afterwards that you are a student
Or the paper where the TU Berlin requires the versicherungs Bescheinigung
also is it possible to apply for insurance if I still don't have an apartment?
Puh idk about that :x
hmm
@compact slate i used expatrio for.my insurance (partnership with TK) and they gave me w/o residence or visa
Basically TK did give the insurance confirmation w/o any visa/residence proof
But i am not sure if it is something that is normal with TK or only because i did it with expatrio (partnered company)
@compact slate fully online
Infact i still dont have my visa
N still not in Germany
@compact slate jus to.make.sure.... "Immatrikulation means enrollment ya?
yeah
Btw what does "Kontoauszug" mean? Blocked acc statement?
I cud help u better if i knew what it.meant
I was told I need Anmeldung for health insurance but that dosn't sound right
Idk about TK, but for AOK, they wanted my Anmeldung and my letter of admission (not certificate, since that requires getting health insurance first)
hmm
They need a billing address 🤷
Idk, all I know is they asked for both of those for me
Didnt need visa/residence stuff though, im assuming since you kinda need to prove insurance for that
Yahh^
Visa / residence permit*
but for anmeldung I need an apartment
@compact slate if u havnt madr a blocked acc yet.... I wid recommend using expatrios value package..... Got insurance and blocked account snd a few more insuranves (travel and liablity")
but I need a bank account to get an apartment
And only submitted my passport copy for the entire process
Nothing else
Sorry for the spelling mistakes..... M on mobile
And the entire thing is online too
Deutsche Bank provides Sperrkonto without anmeldung
The process witht them is really lengthy
If ur not in Germany yet
Wsit nvm ur talking abt sperrkonto
Sorry
I thought u said blocked acc
I had bad luck with Deutsche Bank's remote opening process 😅 had to open it after I arrived
Four tries with the consulate staff doing their best to help and they rejected it every time ;-;
I will go to berlin next week to do it
locally
I just wish the uni would have given me a deadline so soon
The uni?
Dont think they usually care about blocked accounts
Unless youre talking about health insurance
no but I need to pay them
Ah, ya
I had an easy time with TransferWise
(Thanks again for whoever reccomended it here)
Still waiting for the Welcome Center to respond to my email though >.> been a week and a half, but they took 2 last time
Kurze Frage.
Allgäu,Garmisch Parten Kirchen oder Rottal ob der Tauber als Wochenend Trip?
Shisha Bar bei Ahmed um die Ecke als Wochenend Trip👌
😒
Anyone go to Humboldt University in Berlin?
Me no hauptstadtleute
@exotic barn you usually carry on like normal up to the limit they have (9 semesters for example)
gotta read the studienordnung
@exotic barn I heard stories of people changing to another uni at a different Bundesland...
Wait whT?
U wud have to change uni if u cant finish it in the 3 yrs that given u? I thought most of the ppl dont finish it in this time....
And that they jus.... Extend?
You don't have to change unis, no
You just carry on normally and finish it whenever you're ready to
U wud have to change uni if u cant finish it in the 3 yrs that given u? I thought most of the ppl dont finish it in this time....
Being a student in Germany (or Europe in general) has a LOT of perks. Yes I heard of people who just skip a semester but kept their enrollment....I think it was called Urlaubssemester?
Other than that, the impression that I got from the German students, is that, they do finish in the time alloted....even if they extend by a few semesters, but really it depends on the Studienordnung
Some wouldn‘t allow you more than staying for 9 semesters, meaning at the 9th semester you must do your Bachelorarbeit...but it is highly probable that people finish things at the 5th semester as was planned, and then just not do the Bachelorarbeit, but instead „enjoy life“. That‘s also a possibility.
Should i choose public Krankenkasse (TK, AOK) or private one (MAWISTA) if I'm about to study in Germany?
The former
Go for the public. Even after you finish and then work here.....go for the public
If you go over a certain limit on your income, then you might benefit from the private
there's also ersatzkassen, not just public and private
If you meet the requirements, public is usually a decent amount cheaper and still covers a ton
On an unrelated note: Fuck the Hamburg Welcome Center 😂
Ugh, seriously though, what they did is stressing me out...
So my appointment is for Sept. 9, which is all fine and dandy.
But the problem is I arrived quite a while ago, so my 90 days visa free travel (American) is up before then (Aug 20 to be exact)
So I email them August 6th, asking if the appointment is sufficient to continue staying, or if I need to do anything to remain legally.
They wait until 5 minutes after they close on Friday to say "Oh yeah, no, you need to get a temporary residence permit. Bring your filled documents in".
A: they didnt say what documents
B: that gives me literally 1 day to come in
😭
C: MY F'ING BLOCKED ACCOUNT still isnt activated >.< (Damnit Deutsche)
Okay, lookied it up on the official site, it looks like the temporary one only requires a passport and the generic residence permit form (no health insurance, blocked account, etc).
Still stressful af though
Hey, for those of you studying in DE from the USA, what were the requirements you needed to have in order to apply? I know you need a diploma from high school to show you completed it, but is there a specific grade requirement / SAT or ACT score? Or does every university have very different requirements?
I can't find a conclusive answer to this through researching and I guess I want to know if I would even have a chance sine my high school grades weren't so great.
Im assuming this is for a Bachelors?
Yep!
https://www.uni-assist.de/en/tools/info-country-by-country/details-country/country/us-1/
*"A US high school diploma alone does not allow you to study in Germany. We will assess your certificate using the specifications issued by the “Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen” (Central Office for Foreign Education – ZAB). If you fulfil all requirements, your high school diploma qualifies you for the Studienkolleg (preparatory course) and the "Feststellungsprüfung" (university qualification exam).
Direct studies are possible only if you have passed AP exams and achieved specific results. Please note:
AP examinations can only be taken into consideration, if the examination was taken during your time at high school.
AP must be issued by the College Board. Results issued by the High School are not enough."*
Also, this is from an older post (2011) so don't take it as 100% confirmed, but to give you general idea:
Just found this site today and it looks as if the nice people here could be of some assistance to me.
Let me start off with an introduction, My name is Je...
If you want a hard confirmation, your best bet is probably the "specifications issued by the "Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen" " that Uni-Assist uses
Nah it doesn't look like I qualify
Looks like I'll have to study a year in the USA and if I do well there, then I'll qualify
Thank you so much for the help
It looks like doing an Associates degree might be a good idea
Theyre a lot cheaper than Bachelors, and theyd get you set up for it even without the best High school grades
That's... really smart
(Got my associates at the local community college for only a few hundred per credits. Nobody gives af what college if it isnt ivy league)
This is very true^
Worse case scenario, even if you cant do a Bachelors in Germany, you can transfer that Associates into a Bachelors and start 2 years into a 4 year like I did
I would not break the bank going to a subpar college just because it's "better than community college"
Yeah, I think I'm going to take that route
I'll still look more into my options, if I retake the SAT and do well I would actually qualify
I just need to get above 1360...
Mhm. It'll take work, but I'd say its worth it 🤷
Definitely keep at the German language though. Super helpful, and pretty neccesary 😅
I believe it can count towards the Abitur. Not towards college credit
Regardless I do need to get an associate's here. I misread the thing and even the SAT won't help me- I took all the required high school classes but my GPA is only 2.8
Fuck me for slacking sophomore year, if I didn't go through shit that year I would've been good
Junior year was my slack year 😅
It happens
I wonder if my GPA being 2.8 in high school will stop them from accepting me even after two years of uni where I do well
generally people only care about most recent results
Funny enough, I had to give transcripts all the way back to high school for my Masters 😅
But I think GPA wise, yeah, the more recent stuff is generally weighted more (would have to check their official rules)
Well I do want to move to Germany eventually and I thought my best option to do so was through studying there but I'm starting to wonder if I should give up on that dream 😛
Alternatively I wonder if I could go back to high school
Really? I did part of my bachelors in Germany and I just gave them the date of the result of my end of school exams lol
I know Germany has too many unskilled workers currently and is looking for skilled workers- it might be wiser for me to study here and really keep learning German, and then get a degree and see if I can find work there
Hmmm... maybe individual schools do have slightly different requirements?
^even though a lot of media/news websites report that, i am not sure how true that is...... there were other reports where qualified ppl were ranting that there werent enough jobs..
unrelated: btw do german hear feel the need to buy vpn and pirate, or prefer to stay clean from pirating and buy every book/movie that they watch?
For English-language content, im definitely eyeballing a nice VPN to home 👀
Most of the legal services don't even have titles listed, and those that do arent in English >.>
@thin osprey
I dont think its safe to post ur ticket here. Idk🤷
Since ur doubt is resolved, delete it jus to be on the safe side
It should be. You can't use it without him and his passport anyways.
Except the personal information...
Ohkk
Too late, I'm you now
Question: Does anyone know another bank that will open a blocked account for an American?
Deutsche Bank fucked up again and im running out of time before my appointment >.>
Expatrio is where I did mine, they are quick and pretty neat. Haven't had troubles so far
Does it work for Americans?
I have no clue, I'm not American. And I didn't travel to Germany from America
If you shoot them an email, they'll get back to you very quickly. That's been my experience at least
I'll email them right away 👍
The reason I ask is most of the services I looked at had disclaimers like this
I wasn't aware any restrictions where set up like that. Hopefully you find something in time!
Yup. You know its good when somehow we get lumped in with Iran and North Korea 👀
Its not a restriction thing though for the US, just a paperwork one
Id be perfectly fine with em if theyd take me 😅 thats all I need to figure out
Id take anything over wasting more time with Deutsche Bank
Woohoo! 👀 Expatrio is a go (and damn, much better response time than Deutsche Bank's 4-5 business days)
Congratulations Jake! Hope all goes well with ya
Ausbildung,Uni,Normaler Job? @steel mauve
Also erst Freitag haha
remind 3 days anschreiben job
Alright @faint plaza, in 3 days: anschreiben job
remind 3 days anschreiben für gioia Job
Alright @faint plaza, in 3 days: anschreiben für gioia Job
OK, dann bis Freitag 🙂
Ich habe eine Frage: So apparently Expatrio's account requires a normal German bank account to be usable (i.e. I can't directly withdraw from my Expatrio account).
For a normal student account (not blocked), anyone got any reccomendations?
I asked this question earlier...... Ox recommended ING. Berzi i think recommended Sparkasse.
U cud find the entire convo actually ifnu searcjed "ING" or something @fair talon
How recent was it? I can try scrolling back
It was a gud discussion
Uhhh.... Nah it wud be better if u searched
I guess a month ago
Okay, yeah, ill try searching 😅
Yeh, I found it and read through
👍
I'll check out ING and Sparrkasse, I dont need much besides being able to withdraw
And I can confirm firsthand now that yes, Deutsche Bank is meme levels of terrible
Especially for blocked accounts. Their blocked account hotline has literally 0 power (several of them told me so) to look into or access accounts
All they could do was confirm if it existed or not
Wait, didnt they say Sparkasse was an online thing?
Theres literally a branch 4 buildings away from me
No i dont think they said that..... Maybe they mentioned that it had online banking too
Btw how woukd one link old messages, so that one can tap on it and take u to the old message?
I dont think you can. Closest I think you can do is have a mod pin it
Damn, only issue with ING and Sparkasse would be no English support...
N26 was also suggested I think
And dont know how good it is.
Same
The thing is, the debit card which they would give us which we use to withdrse the money..... Do ee get charged if we use atms?
I mean because these are relatively small banks and dont have their own atms like Deutsche bank and other banks....... And i guess theres a service fee if u use a bank atm that is different from the bank that issued the credit card right?
I dont mind if its only certain banks, cause I can take the metro to any of em no problem. Im just trying to see who has the best service and best perks 😅
ING only charges you if you withdraw less than 50€
ING is also only in Deutsch 👀
Und mein Deutsch ist Scheiße
Commerzbank apparently gives 100€ for opening a Girokonto 👀
Damn lol
Bah, damn, seems the bonus is only if youre getting paid then 😅
Or youre subscribed to stuff
Commerzbank, Deutsche Bank, each debit cards can take money from the other ATMs free of charge
Regarding online banks, like Comdirect, N26 and ING-Diba, they usually would give free ATM withdrawals from any bank ATM. I can vouch for N26 on this one
But then you‘d only have 5 free withdrawals per month in Germany, unfortunately
Comdirect however can draw money for free at any Commerzbank ATM (unlimited)
Sparkasse and Volksbank, would have you pay a fee, I believe €4,5, if you draw using Commerzbank or Deutsche Bank (they have the bank alliance which lets you draw money for free if you draw from the banks, but I can‘t remember what‘s it called)
And the €100 credit bonus, you don‘t even feel it. I made comdirect, and I do get that starting credit as well, but that‘s only €2 a month 😅
Well, the 100€ would be nice since im a student who wont be working for a while most likely 😅
But yeah, im just debating between N26 and Commerzbank now
weil 2 Menschen sagen mir zwei verschiedene Dinge
N26 as long as you know you will only pull cash like 3 times a month, then you‘re fine with that. I really like their app as well because ease of use.
It would also be a plus for you using N26, if you travel outside of Germany „a lot“
Cause drawing cash outside of Germany is limitless
But having a more established bank would probably be the better idea here, so go with Commerzbank.
N26 has also some appalling customer service apparently if you look up online 😂
Also, deine 17 Tagen sollten bisher mit Touristvisum gelten
Ahhh
Nach was, dein erste 17 Tagen?
Also, das heißt jetzt?
(Sorry was a bit going around and around with my phone
I still don‘t get what you‘re trying to do here....
Firstly, you do realize that going to the Einwohnermeldeamt is not the same as getting your Aufenthaltserlaubnis, yes?
And secondly, if you‘re ONLY staying at your guest family, for the next 11 days, then you move somewhere else, then I don‘t think it is a good use of your time to go to Einwohnermeldeamt, because you would need to go there again anyway after you move in 11 days
(Assuming you already have a semi-permanent place set)
There are two things here that you need to differentiate, one is registering to the city (go to Einwohnermeldeamt), and the other is registering to the country (going to the ABH)
And sorry, I meant Bußgeld, not Busgeld
Oh makes more sense lmao
@warped atlas I’m just following what this is telling me which is something my program advisor sent me
So is getting a residence permit only useful if you stay in the same city where you got it?
holy shit i didnt know the residence permit costs 100 euros
I thought it was 120? 🤷
Urrmmm...yeah it costs somewhere around there
My uni says 110€ for Hamburg, could differ by state
Noooooo
Look, how about I tell what you should get, here, okay? 😅
Firstly, I need to know, how long is your program?
When is it supposed to start, and when did you actually arrive here in Germany @exotic barn
That page you had clipped, is a full coverage on all nationalities, but not telling you the slight details that you can "exploit"
but firstly, I need to know those things I asked
And by the way, going to the Einwohnermeldeamt, or to the Rathaus, is required even if you move from one apartment, to the apartment across the street
but you don't need to apply for a new Residence Permit
They'll just stick your new address to your card, and that's it
So I arrive at the actual Uni on August 29th and it starts a couple of days later because there’s one day for the orientation and for Jetlag recovery though I’ve already recovered obviously. And I arrived on August 13th @warped atlas
anyone has experience with immobilien24? is there really no description in the ads? I mean like in wg-gesucht where theywrite about the Lage, WG-Leben and so on
There are descriptions
am I blind?
it doesn't say who lives there, the age, what they expect for the WG-Leben
It happens at times
Some people get bored of writing things in details
And would rather just describe the bare minimum, and get things going at the interview later on
I‘d say that‘s quite enough, for you to at least look at the WG, and very likely that the Vermieter just lost both of the WG-Mieter, and looking to fill it
Which is why there‘s no age and all
Whether you get the furnitures and so on, you better ask directly
I see thanks
They often only provide minimum detail because they'll get people asking regardless
Not really that much of a need to stand out when demand exceeds supply
That's true, but is this the case in all cities in Germany?
Well, some will be worse than others
Hamburg was particularly bad for example
Im sure the smaller/more rural areas dont have the problem as much
Most big city’s have that problem
I always say to people try to get a flat within Sbahn limit so you don’t pay your soul for a flat l.
I just hope I'll find something haha
What are good areas in Berlin like Charlottenburg?
Or anything within sensible ubahn range from the TU berlin
this depends what you consider good lmao
TU Berlin is right by Zoo iirc, so it's v well-connected
Eh, by German standards. By most of the world's, its pretty damn safe
At least, coming as an American 🤷
dont equate america with "most of the world", please
🤣
Berlin is pretty big and every neighborhood is very different. Currently staying in Wedding and that's way different than Schöneweide.
I'd say just calculate it according to time to the university, anything in 30 minutes range to university sounds pretty good. And yeah it's right at Zoologischer Garten, so u lines and busses. But start looking early, because everyone is looking and it's really tough if your budget is tight. It's a landlords market atm
@hardy wren I mean, ive stayed in a lot of the world. Thats what I was basing it off of. I know 'Merica is a bit of an outlier 😅
i live in wedding and its wonderful
Wedding is pretty chill I gave up on getting a travel card because there's nothing that's not around the corner and I no longer have classes.
How competitive are english bachelor degrees?
that is a vague question
I‘m guessing he‘s asking whether it‘s possible to get a job in Germany with only an English-Major Bachelor degree
You're right that's a bit of a useless question with no context.
I graduated in Australia with a Bachelor in business a few years back, have worked full-time in the mean time, and am now considering studying in Germany. My options as I see them are a Masters of the same field (made difficult partly due to my degree having only lasted 3 years), or to choose a different field in which to study as an undergraduate again. I'm leaning towards the latter for a few reasons, mostly job satisfaction and interests.
I've located about 6 degrees offered throughout the country in a particular area I'm interested in (environmental engineering/science) offered at public universities; taught in English. Most have limits of how many students they accept. That's why I asked about competitiveness :)
My German as of now is somewhere between A1 and A2. Without considerable time I wouldn't expect to be able to study in German (perhaps an option with a masters down the track, though).
Sorry for the wall of text. I'm early on in researching to be honest so haven't yet begun the uni-assist process or anything
Oh I'm also a British citizen. Which would have potentially made things easier for me without Brexit...
generally, medical, law and a few programmes at reputed unis are the only ones that have lots of competition to get into. others mostly are unrestricted admission, which means if you fulfill their basic entry requirements and your grades arent too shabby they will take u in. therefore not too competitive and depends on the programme. check on the Uni website if the programme you are applying for has "Numerus Clauses"/ "NC" which means its restricted admission and tougher to get into. if it isnt and has unrestricted admission, its easier to get in.
@obsidian topaz
however if they are indeed NC, and u still want to know what would ur chances be of getting an admission, that is something that i dont know and maybe someone else can answer
Yeah quite a few of the env ones state they are restricted (some setting out the actual number e.g. 80)
Thank you for the insight
Freiburg for instance has 80 students per admission to the englisch BSc/A
How easy is it really to get into a German university? I've got about a 3.7 gpa, 3 of those are aps, I'm planning on taking four more ap classes next year/senior year
(currently junior)
for context,
i want to go into engineering, and have taken ap physics, gotten an A on it, and a 3 (American system) grade on it, I'm currently in Multivariable calculus, the highest level our school offers. My German language level is about Higher A to Lower B, and I currently am enrolled in a tutoring program, quickly trying to increase my german.
Firstly, which university do you want to go to? And secondly have you talked to a sort of Studienberater and getting your GPA and studies recognized by German universities?

Sehr geehrte/r Frau/Herr XXX
@steel mauve

this is a standart anschreiben done fast by me
that i normally used
for salesman jobs
maybe it helps you
sweet danke
Ooo.
@neat sonnet Well, you do meet the minimum GPA requirement (provided that your high school is recognized), but most likely you would still need to do a Studienkolleg to bring your high school degree up to a German Abitur (the list above is a bit old, but gives you the idea of whats "fully equivalent" in their eyes).
As for how hard it is to get in, @tame forum made a good post I'll copy paste below:
generally, medical, law and a few programmes at reputed unis are the only ones that have lots of competition to get into. others mostly are unrestricted admission, which means if you fulfill their basic entry requirements and your grades arent too shabby they will take u in. therefore not too competitive and depends on the programme. check on the Uni website if the programme you are applying for has "Numerus Clauses"/ "NC" which means its restricted admission and tougher to get into. if it isnt and has unrestricted admission, its easier to get in.
They might ask for proof of German proficiency before letting you take classes in it though. I'd make sure your German is up for it 🤷
Yes, you usually need B2 or C1 certified German for doing a Bachelor degree.
Ive heard of some letting you do language courses in addition to your Studienkolleg program as well, but thats basically one semester to get that high. Your German should be pretty high before that 😅
Also, most unis are pretty open about their admittance system too. They'll give you the exact weight each part of the application has on your admittance score, and if your score is high enough (unless it has NC/restricted admission), you're admitted
I'm in a similar situation as him. Does it change anything if I am an IB student?
I'm hoping to go to university in Germany and to eventually move there.
You really need to look into it. Almost all the resources are present online, unfortunately a lot of which are in German. I can tell you the ones I think are most relavent for bachelor students. Anabin, the university you want to apply for( they probably have their own deadlines and rules), your country's student visa application process, your language exam, your papers being in English or German.
Some students for instance ( I'm looking at you A level grads) don't get a Studentkolleg, because they have direct entry if they meet the subject requirements.
Really differs, case by case.
No problem mate, use it in conjunction with your goal university+ emails to said university. Things become much more clear.
@granite nebula
Under certain conditions, the IB diploma is recognised as a higher education entrance qualification in Germany.
Thanks.
This requirement is so upsetting to me. I don't meet it because my school doesn't offer any of those as HL courses.
Even if my IB diploma isn't accepted, having been in the program still looks good for me on my applications, right?
Yah it might look good...... But if u dont fulfill the requirements..... Then all it can do is look good........looking good doesn't fulfill a key requirement
If u want u can perhaps do the compulsory subject by urself
Like a private candidate
That's true. I might look into that if I don't like my other options. Hopefully it is possible. Thanks.
You could look into either doing it as part of an associates, or possibly doing it as a MOOC (Massively Open Online Course)
Whether or not its accepted would vary by course and by university, but my German Masters program told me I was missing some Business courses for example, so they provided a list of courses on EdX.org that would be acceptable if I passed and received the certificate
@granite nebula
Also, could be worth it to just ask them what options you have then (listing some of the ones you've found like here to show you've done some research). Even before applying, I was able to receive some clarification from the university admissions department.
Woah thats really cool of german unis to accept online courses to fill in missing credits
Im not sure if its a general thing or if itwas just a cooperative admissions team, so thats why I was reccomending to ask 🤷
But yeah, it was super nice. Did four of those things over lunch breaks at work
The original email with the options given.
Oh wow, that's really nice. Thanks.
Happy to help 😊
The trick is to start early. Nobody's got a beginning to end walkthrough of this process because it can be dramatically different for different people. The sooner you start asking around and planning stuff out though, the less bothersome delays or unforeseen issues coming up in the process will be.
😀
Hey, I think I understand what this community is for (university transfers to German institutions) but can someone explain the reasoning behind the name "leben-unterm-dach"? Culturally referring to living in Deutschland via being "under the roof?"
DACH is an abbreviation for Germany Austria and Switzerland (dont ask me how, I forgot)
So basically "Life in German-Speaking Countries"
Its not just for university stuff (I think most people learning German here are students, so its a bit overrepresented). Any questions about German life/culture can go here as well.
Hope that answers your question @tiny flume 😊
"State farm is here" indeed. Danke
Bitte
D for Deutschland, A for Austria, CH for Confoederatio Helvetica
multilingual acronym 🤗
university transfers to German institutions
it’s not just about university stuff
and the title is basically a pun. DACH is short for DE/AT/CH really, which are the two letter codes for Germany, Austria and Switzerland (the latter two coming as mentioned from the latin Austria and Confoederatio Helvetica)
DAACH. Now including Australien 👀

Guys, the university i want to apply to says i need to submit atleast b1+prove of attendance in a b2 course for my degree program. I do have a b1 certificate and i also studied b2 myself but didn't give the exam bc my local goethe institute did not conduct a b2 exam. What should i do?
First step is to email your uni and ask them for advice.
I'm not sure of other things to do as I haven't been in that situation myself, but it's always best to ask the uni directly when you're unsure of something.
Okay. I'll email them
That university already told you the method
Basically they need proof that you have ATTENDED the B2 course
A fellow Ausländer had applied during my year with no language certificate, only proof of attendance until B1 level. @ashen mirage
Most likely than not, you‘d probably still have to do an Einstufungstest if you still have to reach C1
@warped atlas but he/she mentioned that they studied b2 by themeselves. In that case who would make a certificate
Dude said „I studied B2 myself“ not „I studied B2 BY myself“ @tame forum. In this case, Goethe should provide the cert (which they already give out at the end of your courses)
Perhaps ur right
@warped atlas @tame forum I did not attend a course for b2 at goethe institut. I just bought the books and studied at home. just to be clear
who will provide me an attendance certificate in this case?
Errr....no one in this case, sorry buddy
You can apply using that B1 certificate (or at least begin to apply)
And see what the university says, what you should do, etc
if they absolutely require a certificate of some sort, the easiest way would be to get your B2 certified (without the extra time and money costs of a course)
But the only way to do that is to take the exam, or?
yes
Assuming my translation of that is right, yeah, thats perfectly normal. Its not called a deep dive because its easy 👀
Had the same experience with my past study abroad. You pick up the day to day essentials fairly quick (a month or two), but it takes practice
Sometimes people think I don’t understand them just because I don’t say a lot when the reality of it actually is just that it’s a lot faster paced than I am used to
I would love to say more it’s just I can’t talk so quickly yet
Well, I'd say for me at least, speed is the easier part to get past (thats just getting used to the patterns and tuning your ear to it), but definitely one of the most annoying things when starting out
Then what’s the harder part
I mean it’s not the speed at which they talk I struggle with, because really it’s all fairly easy to understand, it’s the speed at which I formulate sentences I struggle with
I’ve done a ton of writing practice and not enough speaking but that’s the whole reason why I’m here though haha
M scared of this too^
Improvising sentences on the spot was the part I struggled with most
It’s also like half of the vocabulary that i hear them use I completely understand but somehow I don’t remember to use them in conversation myself
I have a suggestion that m trying out rn too. Theres this app called clozemaster which has blanks u fill out. Anyways thats not how i use it...... It has tonnes of sentences which i translate in my head and then compare with the german sentence in yhr app
U could try it out and see how well it goes
Jus so that i can get into the habit of translating in my head faster
I’m about to be at a German university as well for study abroad and I’m sure they’ll have similar exercises for me there in the classes or for homework
The thing is when we sit to write, the process of writing itself is slow, and gives us more time to think...... Which isnt true for real life situations
Where we need to be spontaneous
But I’m also past the stage of translating what someone says to me into English in my head, unless there was a word I didn’t get. I can understand it without referring back to an English translation is what I mean if you understand what I mean xD
Yes that’s correct
Nah i meant the opposite. I meant reading the english sentence and translating into german in my head
Jus to see how well ik the words
And if I ever start learning a third language I will use the lesson I’ve learned from German to start with speaking ASAP rather than later
I wasn’t commenting on what you said it’s just something that what you said reminded me of
Ohh
You know what’s also annoying is when you hear a new word and you think you know what it means because you know the smaller words from which it’s made up of but your translation of what you thought it was wasn’t correct xD
Or you were actually correct
But it was the wrong context for the wird@
Word
And so it meant something else
Lol
well it’s good to know other people know the struggle
Berzi (C level) herself mentioned that it happens with her too
Nahh
I was gonna ask, did I miss a memo?
Same
Wtf
when in doubt they
The female anime pfp was misleading to say the least
apart from emi there’s no one here I actually know to be a woman
Suzu
right
Thought the same at the beginning Fledermaus
yea I knew that
oh dude- people with female anime pfps are almost always male
No that wasnt the only reason
lol
I read that "he" was a lesbian or something
also the nickname is literally berserker
seems unfemanly
…I won’t question that abomination of a word my fingers decided to type
let’s just roll with it
Yes that indeed added to the confusion
Lmfao
look, people on discords are either lgbt, autistic, or me
I thought he was a girl
it’s the law
lol
So i guess m the autist
Fox Ari is also girl?
And also 2 of the mods are giels
yes i am
The female anime pfp was misleading to say the least
🙂
are there multiple Aris here now, cause I remember Ari to have a blue username?
there's a c level ari yeah
Yeah Fox Ari is Austrian
why do you know so much about me 🤔
A L T
Why not
that's concerning to say the least

I say it now.
We are all WOMAN until proven otherwise.
Amen
indeed
Somebody said Berzi is a female and trolling us. I think Erik said that. Or he trolled me 🤔
Idk who planted the memory of berzi saying he was a lesbian in my head
Anyway Fox Ari’s address is..
Lol
👀
fun fact: my gender has been confusing to everybody since i joined the server. You guys aren't even the first victims
evil loli laughter
GLaD lore

one of the main reasons is that i don't really care about how people see me in terms of pronouns or gender
so whenever someone uses the "wrong" one i just let it slip because it's fine for me
and then theres sebi who gets annoyed when ppl dont capitalise the S
do
btw my pfp isn't a female 😏
it’s even worse. Sebi hates it when you write it Sebi
welp. i guess m gay for finding ur pfp cute then
Who is this guy? @tight kelp
astolfo from Fate's spinoffs
how do people arrange for textbooks in unis usually? amazon? uni library? second-hand from graduates?...... cant find some books online 😦
and would one need to have thier own contacts or looking at online websites like ebay or something suffice?
if you find them, they suffice :P
there's also facebook groups and similar communities
a lot of unis will give you access to free ebooks from many publishers
failing that, libgen
I mean, sorry, don’t use libgen, for it is illegal in Germany
but if you were in a place where it is legal, like me, then you could use that
for it is illegal in Germany
one who useth it shall by law be punished
but if you were in a place where it is legal, like me
and that's just humblebragging :<
@warped atlas @tight kelp thank you so much guys, the university responded pretty quick to my email and it turns out i just misunderstood between preparatory college and preparatory german course. for the studienkolleg aka preparatory college b1 is sufficient.
yay
That's good.
@shut gorge wrong. I have a female anime pic and im a female. btw some ppl here assume im a guy automatically for some reason which is not true.
Maybe because of “Jay”?
Ehhh, on the internet, everyone are dudes until proven otherwise
Female anime characters dont exist
They‘re all futa?
Wait no
🤢
Rem is 100%female best girl nvm
No, I'm sitting it next month
@ashen mirage m indian and that is indeed true
very common name
@foggy prism yes thats y m downloading all my books before i reach germany from libgen and other websites. but i will be on the ebook thing too in my uni
puts on headset
I'm in
types furiously
@tropic edge I see you are a man of culture as well.
Of course, I'm the whole circus
You know, so anime on *legal streaming sites in Germany all have their anime in German sub or dub, no English right?
Ive honestly debated going full weeb and using Anime to learn German 😂
Not in Germany
but fuck paid shit anyways
i beg to differ
I only have access to German ones here 🤷
I think the Netflix originals have all options, but the non-Netflix ones dont
Licensing shit and all that
Well I've asked this before and it's fine to watch streaming websites anime as long as you're not downloading or uploading.
first one i opened
And also on a private network not public
Basically, no torrenting
You wanna stream, you can either 123 movie
Or „movie to“
streaming is borderline legal
Yeah, what vahti said
but anything that uploads is a big nono
Not really, it's theft but not in the same way as sharing it is
i stream anime all the time because there are no decent paid sources here
How is anime free in japan?
and i don't mind throwing money at good service
Idk the same way tv is free
Errr then yeah, of course
netflix has added alot of anime recently, i was actually surprised how many good series are there
But people can‘t binge 😉
Never been to Japan and I don't know much outside of anime
@vague brook first one I opened
Yep they have added quite a bit
„Good“ animes? Meh, haven‘t watched animes for awhile now
oh my god that screenshot cringes me and im not even watching it
Maybe One Punch, or Kengan Ashura, or the first Psycho Pass
But even Kengan is just because I liked the manga
@vague brook Its Aincrad arc, its tolerable
But yeah, all the anime on mine only has Japanese or German
Now watching Darker than Black, but I just don‘t feel it
Only the other streaming sites have it in English
Honestly
Just watch the abridged
Exact same story plot-wise, 10x better characters
Overall plot-wise*
Yeah it’s also funny how sometimes I can have a conversation without much trouble and then other times I’m not understanding enough words to continue the interaction without asking for a translation of a word @fair talon
@exotic barn Mhm, you're fluent.... up until the exact moment you're not.
Ye
There’s even some aspects of English I’m not fluent in lmao
It depends on the subject
https://youtu.be/JSHkYQoH4EE Think you and I could relate to this clip 😅

Oh.
??
okay, sollte eh lernen gehen
Darf ich fragen, was Du studierst?
Mathe

If you're already in the city, its pretty simple. Look up Facebook groups of people from your country in Berlin/Germany. Go to meetups and get to know people and make it a point to let them know you're looking for somewhere to stay. Join a Verein and make friends, and ask around.
These will get you the gold nugget places through personal connections, at least in Berlin. The more traditional routes would be camping Facebook pages like flats in Berlin and WG gesucht, working on your application skills for when an ad is put up with what you want.
Anecdote: I spent an hour+ setting up my request page and got a few hits. You just have to be persistent. Good luck!
I get a good amount of requests but they are all either very far from my uni or banned by wg-gesucht 😥
So basically scams and inconvenient location. Scams are to be ignored but far away locations I wouldn't dismiss very fast. You can try house of nations, berlinnovo, and basically student housing. They are sometimes a bit on the pricy side but you'll find something.
The student housing locations might be theoretically a bit far and in isolated areas, think south west of Berlin, say Steglitz, but they are pretty cool and give you time to look for something better. If you're looking for anything long term central, you'll need the paperwork anyway. Shufa if you're working and stuff
guys, so the online bank with which i am making my current account is based in UK [monese] can it pose problems due to brexit. on their website they have assured that everything will be fine and nothing will happen. but still jus wanna ask here once
nobody knows what type of brexit we're going to see, or if that will change anything
well. worst case scenario hard brexit, would u feel comfortable having an account in a UK based bank?
What @hidden briar said. Nobody has a certain answer to that because nobody knows what tf is going to happen 😅
Hmm..... I guess i will look into German options then before deciding anything
Is this for the blocked account or normal?
Is anyone here on expatrio + N26 and hasn't received their monthly transfer?
When should I get worried, and who should I contact if I am?
Ah. Well, I'm currently in the process of setting up an ING Diba account for my normal one
Ive got Expatrio for my blocked one
ING's based in the Netherlands, might be worth looking at for an online-only account @tame forum (idk what kind of services monese offers so I cant compare)
Yah i will try looking into ING too tbh
Dont wanna risk running around for my money after brexit
love ing
Well, as long as they dont take as long as fucking Deutsche to open an account for me I'll be happy 😅
I'd be curious how long it takes, I bank with ING Australia and I opened my accounts in about 5 mins on the website
Mostly just waiting for PostIdent.
The actual applying took 5 min
In hindsight I shouldve just tried my best with the video ident in German
ah yeah I didn't have to do anything like that, German banks seem a bit stricter about the ID stuff
Question for anyone in Germany, that‘s already opened a VL-account. (Vermögenswirksame Leistung):
How long did it take until they opened your Depot account, and how did you get notified of it? (If you opened it through Comdirect, even better)
I‘ve sent the letter for opening the account since end of last week and haven‘t received any reply whatsoever unfortunately...
@fair talon and @tame forum getting a haircut in Germany is very different. Be prepared to get a hard fade on the sides and a long top every time...
No matter how many pictures I show and how much I try to explain, I always end up walking out with a variation of a hard fade and long on top. When I ask to just shape it up so it's not too shabby (I did this once) I think he took away like 2 or 2 and a half inches...
I've had a total of 4 or 5 haircuts
Guess I'm just lucky then... only issue ive had is them trying to sneak more things in without telling me they cost more
Like asking for a haircut and then they start working on the beard >.>
Yeah that too, this dude was sooo intent on working on my beard I think he spent a solid 15 minutes on the sideburns
where do you live? I never experienced such a behavior
Berlin
Ok move to the country side ... here the barbiers may be more honest 😉
Had decent luck today with a normal haircut, but thats because I spoke the guy's native language, so no broken German or English was needed
It's a Fachhochschule
I don't understand very well how they're different but I was looking for a TU
Munich is better
