Well, I meant it comes together, not seperately. Mine had direct deposit as an option too, but you still had the pay stub delivered at the instant its deposited
I mean I'm pretty sure that's what this is jake, it's just here early apparently
@fair talon I am doing a semester long study abroad in Lüneburg which is really near to Hamburg, and my total cost is approximately $12,000
I got my money in two batches (directly transferred to my bank account)
this was only told to me after more than a month had passed
@exotic barn Yeah, it helps that I have almost no standards for myself as far as basic human essentials (besides my phone lol)
Would be a lot more if I wanted to live like a civilized person
It’s funny that staying with a family is cheaper than a hotel because I definitely prefer living with a family for the immersion
Would be nice to have that option, but I think for a 2 year program that might be an issue 😅
We did that for my Bachelors study abroad. Was pretty fun
I feel bad for the poor folks at Student Services 😅
This is the second day ive come in with 12+ questions I need answered
That’s what they are there for at the end haha
Warum 2 Felder fuer das Niveau?
Probably the first box is for A/B/C and the second one for 1/2?
sounds a bit complicated
What would you do if you had to find an electrician for a very simple job in your vicinity (Germany)?
All the places I find on google maps seem to not exist anymore and stuff like check24 gives me results from other towns that want ~200€ for something simple
i'm really not used to stuff I can't find with the internet xD
Just going off small town US experience, word of mouth might be good for finding one?
People have usually had to call an electrician at least once, and they could probably at least tell you who not to get lol
I'll ask around, but none of my friends lives very close to where I do, and I wanted to avoid having to pay extra for distance
Landlord maybe? Theyd be the most likely to know
Maybe you can ask in this app
Eh I forgot how it's called
Jojo?
JODEL
Ye
There are folks from the area near you discussing many things
So maybe you can ask them 🤔
At least in Aachen the app is very popular
What is Jodel? Second server ive heard that name on
@odd bison interesting, thank you
@fair talon it's like Yik Yak
@tight kelp you could ask in Facebook groups of ya town you live in. Works usually too
berzi if I was in Germany I would help you out
I know my electrickery
is it something complex what you need?
Is it cheap to live in Frankfurt?
Fuck no
depends on the frankfurt i guess
and your definition of living
but i agree with suzu
What @pale saddle said. Its kinda relative
If you mean in comparison to most of Germany? Bit pricier
But compared to a few other places (ex: the US) it might be a lot cheaper
Most big cities are expensive
Hamburg's expensive by German standards, but my monthly Cost of Living is about the same as my rent back in the US 👀
^just as an example
deeeefinitely depends where in the US you compare to, but it's definitely cheaper in Germany than in US cities of comparable size/connectedness
my cost of living in Berlin is about the same as it was in Ohio, but like... also I get to live in Berlin and not ohio so
Mhm
I don't think anywhere in Germany is like NYC or LA levels of expensive tho
Definitely not SF levels 👀
I dont have the link on hand, but theres a nice site available that lets you compare a bunch of different prices between two cities/places
Like price of milk, price of gas, price of rent, etc
That'll give you a good idea of where some things might be more or less expensive
Danke 👀 cant use the internet much off wifi
@humble bough Munich comes close to it
ehhh I mean Munich's bad but I don't think it comes particularly close to NYC
it certainly doesn't on the linked site lol
damn tho comparing munich to berlin makes me feel real frugal tho 😎
its good bro
Gut? I mean, theyre in need enough that theres visa exemptions specifically for them
Well, not exemptions, but the requirements are a bit less since its a "shortage occupation"
So I could realistically get a job as an engineer there
Granted I have my B2 certificate
I mean, a lot of engineering jobs are pretty international/English as is. The B2 definetely helps with standing out though 👍
My uni is part of the Erasmus Programm
But we're not an EU country
I need at least B1 for the Visa but I thought why not go further for B2
Which Visa? The work visa doesnt have a language requirement if I recall right
The residence one you can get after living here long enough does, but thats after a few years
We're required to study for a semester and then a 6 month internship
I'm hoping to work after graduating
In Germany itself, somewhere technical like the Ruhrgebiet
Well, the EU Blue Card for Germany just requires the job offer you get pays above a certain salary (in the case of engineers, €39.624) and that you have a degree equivalent to a German university one
I've heard that the usual issue is that a company may not hire me if I don't have the blue card which itself needs me to be hired
So it's like a vicious cycle
Havent heard much about that. Theres also the job seekers visa you can get for 6 or so months I think so you can seek enployment/apply in person in Germany
If I wasnt here as a student, id probably be doing that
Well, Im fairly sure you can change the job seekers visa to that once you found a job
Would be silly if you couldnt
I know little about the german process, just EU rules im thinking probably apply
I would be very happy in germany but i would like dual citizenship and that is impossible for me in germany
Whats your nationality if you dont mind me asking? @exotic barn
Ah, darn
I was gonna say, theres a few rulings im hoping to try and use in a few years for that, but they bank heavily on how dumb the US treats its expats
yeah
LOL
I'm curious how it works in the US. My husband has dual US/German citizenship, but that was due to his parents being from both. I wonder if I'd be able to retain my US citizenship if I applied for my German one, since he has both.
Before i answer that lemme google
lmgtfy :p
yes and no
you can, after 3 years
if you live in Germany
"Are spouses or registered partners of German citizens eligible for early naturalization?
Section 9 of the Nationality Act
Spouses or registered same-sex partners of German citizens are eligible for naturalization after three years of legal residence in Germany. They must have been married or in a registered partnership for at least two years at the time of application. The general requirements for naturalization also apply.
For more information, please contact the naturalization authority responsible for your place of residence"
I don't know if you can keep a US passport
The general requirements for naturalization also apply.
I knew that info already, but I was referring to being able to retain my US citizenship
You might, due to the increased fee and possible exit taxes faced from the US side
this is the only way i can see
If a non-German citizen acquires German citizenship by naturalization, and renunciation of the other citizenship(s) would be "very difficult."[3] Such difficulty is to be assumed if any of six conditions apply, including unreasonable difficulties in renouncing, holding a refugee travel document, and the potential economic hardship of renunciation exceeding a cost of 10,225.84 Euros (originally 20,000 Deutsche Marks).[3][10][2] Most persons naturalised as German citizens in 2017, 61%, fell within these exceptions and were successful in obtaining approval to retain their other citizenships, with more than 81% of new German citizens from the Americas doing so.[2]```
Oh! Sweet.
That's really helpful info.
Thanks, Google! er, @exotic barn
LOL that's comical though
Yeah, basically it helps the US jacked up its fee from $450 to $2k something
Plus the exit tax if you dont meat the requirements for waiving it
That's why I want to move to Europe but move to a country that allows un restricted dual citizenship in an unrestricted way
(Also, side note. Kinda got strongly hinted today to apply to work at my uni once the residence paperwork is all taken care of 👀)
So thats something 😅
ongratulations
Yo
For me to go to DE i'd have to give proof of B1 in deutsch. But I've seen people who went to DE without the language and spent a year studying it before going to the uni
Is that possible?
Well I think we need a few details
The requirements for staying germany depend on your citizenship and on your reason for immigration.
^
What youre talking about @true citrus at the end there sounds like the requirement for joining a Bachelors degree in germany.
Youre required to shownproof of sufficient German in that case, or none in available, arranging a 'Studienkolleg' course meant to bring you to sufficient level for study
If your degree program is taught in English (more common with Masters programs), theres no German language requirement
Really?
Yeh
Mine is in English, so all I had to do was prove I had sufficient English for that. No German needed
(Still taking a language course for German tho just cause I want a social life)
That's so convenient
Its a lot less common at the Bachelor level. Most of the ones I saw that were English were mixed (German electives)
So for those you had to demonstrate by graduation that you had reached a sufficient level of German
But thats several years to learn it in the country. Ya gotta be really bad at it to not meet that point by then 😅
DAAD had a listing of (basically) every English masters program I believe
Would highly reccomend giving it a look over if youre interested in doing it in Germany 👀
The competition for those spots at fully English (no German needed) Masters courses is very difficult, as there's so many people from around the world that apply for those seats (not just native English speakers but also lots and lots of people that know English as a foreign language). I tried once for an English-only Computer Science master's degree and they said that something like 90% of the people get rejected just because there's just too many qualified people applying.
Yup. Most of my collegues at my program arent even UK/US
A lot of people know English already as the international/internet language, so for them its easier to do a degree in that than learn a third language (Deutsch)
Doesnt mean you shouldnt apply if theres a program that catches your eye though 👀
Just means take the application seriously, since its not a guarenteed thing
Eine Frage: Was bedeutet eigentlich Halbpension?
obvious episode of imperialism by the ISO team if you ask me ⚔
Was? Tee mit Milch? 😮
Tee mit Milch? Oder Milchtee?
after the milk
i love the caution they put in specifying "unless this procedure is contrary to the normal practice in the organization concerned"
To be fair to ISO, this is not meant to be the offical way of making tea
it's their official way
just a standarf reference so researchers can conduct experiments in the same conditions
that being said theyre wrong af in this case
which monster puts in milk first
ISO monsters apparently
btw they fail to mention the temperature of the milk
thereby annulling whatever value there would be in specifying that it should be added when the mixture is at 65 to 80 degrees
lemme check
What is ISO exactly?
an organisation for the standardisation of... stuff
Its wierd that they r standardising how one makes tea
Maybe it will be usefull when aliens visit us...
ISO = international organization for standardization. if you wonder why the letters are wrong order, french
as Mami mentioned, it's just so researchers can adhere to the same standards and make sure every study happens under the same conditions
nah the real reason is that otherwise they'd have been called IOS
lol
and as we know, apple is about as far from anything standard as anything can get
i feel like ISO is older than iOS
really :^)
(Sorry for the English) I think that sounds a bit reasonable. I think thats the rule of thumb my family follows in the US (hour and a half for local, 3 hours for international)
🤔
And the EU doesnt have the TSA shenanigans to delay things
instructions should be clear on your ticket or whatever else the company you're flying with gave you
i usually try to be there at least 2h/1.5h before the flight just to be safe
Yeah, im paranoid about that stuff, so I always tried for two. but 99% of the time ive ended up waiting around for over an hour 😅
bring a book ;)
According to my dad its either 3 hours before or nothing
Why do movie theaters here have so few showings?
In Germany*
In the States, thered be showings on loop from open to close, but ive yet to find a theatre with more than 5ish showings per day?
Like, what does the theater do all day here?
There are larger cinemas in germany i can assure you but some are just small businesses that only show a handful of movies a day
Eh, just weird to me to run so few showings of whats essentially just managing a projector 😅
Like, the family one back home only had two or so people there on slow days and still played back to back
I think it has something to do with licensing the movies and paying more for more showings
Sounds likely enough. Think they pay per ticket or a flat fee in the US
also, if you have only one room, you have to factor in clean-up times, which I imagine can be quite long if the room is large enough
so like, a 2h movie will have the theatre open 20 minutes before the showing, then first show ads for another 10 minutes, then play the movie, and then clean up, so I reckon you’re looking at 3-3.5h of room occupation for a single movie
say you have the first showing at 1400, then the next at 1700, and a last one at 2000
if you want more, you have to add another room
Oh yeah, sounds like Germany for it to be a one room theater 😅
That makes more sense I suppose
most theatres I’ve seen here are either 1 room, 2-3 or like 10
and nothing in-between
in italy i'm used to seeing ~5 rooms ones
in fact, i've never seen a theatre with just one room except in germany
Yeah, they like their neat and tiny operations here 😅 even the family one back in the states had 10+ rooms
I had just assumed multiple movies = multiple rooms. Didnt think about swapping out movies between showings
@tame forum ISO is basically the measure of a photographic film's sensitivity to light
Yh i am sure thats correct too... But i think these guys were refferering to an another iso
ISO is associated with several things because they're the ones making the standard for different things
it's the sensitivity to light (and not of film, because it matters for digital cameras as well), but it can also be character encoding and a lot of other stuff
stating stuff like that when people already discussed it makes it sound like you think your narrower point of view is the only correct one
ay gang i needto get a phone and a plan. can anyone reccomend a network that doesnt blow donkey dick or a hole in my wallet the size of one?
alditalk is cheap and good enough in most areas
Whatsup guys, does anyone here have any knowledge about studienkollegs? I need help urgently
I think the laws are different but anyway
I want to know more about tye externe feststellungprufung
Meaning taking the final assessment exam without going through tge studienkolleg
like how to do that?
Yeah
The application process and everything
I couldny find much information about this online
I suppose just going through the studienkolleg isnt an option
Yah i don't think thats legal lol
Even though the concept totally makes sense.......in an ideal world this would be totally perfect.
But i have a feeling this attempt to cheat out of a studienkolleg year isnt gonna go well
@tame forum ita not cheating, google externe feststellungprufung, you are allowed to prepare for it by yourself without visiting a studienkolleg
Oh. I guess i was wrong. Sorry 👌 . Its good that this exists
I wasnt expecting that becox in some cases... Students from countries who have schooling for only 12 years instead of 13 are also required to do the studienkolleg i think.... Even though they have already covered the content....
In their schools
Yeah, I didnt know this exists either, I just found out yesterday, its really great
And the entire concept of the studienkolleg is to "complete" the one year to reach 13 years like the german system
I think in the usual dates, meaning in the end of each studienkolleg semester
And that is?
I think july and mars or maybe april
But dont quote me on that, im not sure
It also depends on which uni the test takes place in but roughy thats the period of year that students take it
Hmmm... Danke
@latent rain Theres basically three 'phone' networks if I recall, that most of the companies share. If you want the best coverage, T-Mobile is the way to go. But plans on the O2 and (other network I cant recall) are a good amount cheaper and I've yet to have a problem with coverage (guess it depends on where you are)
If youre going cheap tho, Aldi-talk is okay. I personally went with one of the turkish companies since their plans include more data (12GB prepaid w/ unlimited talk/call in Germany for 25€ 👀)
Got mine at a Vodafone store lol, they just sold a turkish plan
Ay Yildiz is the one im with atm
Might go to Allnet after this one, their ratea look even cheaper
Allnet ortel*
Congstar is cheap too if I recall that correct
Yeah. Think Ortel was ~10GB for 15? Whatever it was, it was slightly less data for 10€ less
Yeah that is top notch for Germany
Either way, after looking at the plans the official lines have, honestly might just stick with a prepaid the whole two years 😅
I'll haggle a bit and see if I can find something better, but the official rates were kinda shit
Their only benefit seemed to be after the 4ishGB limit, you had unlimited still, just slow
Yeah the prepaid cards are the cheapest and best
You almost don’t have any other chance besides a contract for 2 years when it comes to a mobile plan
I was saying that its looking like itd be cheaper/better to just keep adding more credit to the prepaid card than to sign up for a contract. Havent found any that offer better data plans than the prepaids... @faint plaza
Ahhh gotcha sry man haha
Lebara is pretty nice
Had them as a throw away sim
For a year
Was cheap and good
Yeah, it just seems weird since theyre supposed to be cheaper
Yeah
But the closest ive found is O2 having 6gb for 20€
And I get twice that right now
I'll haggle with em and see if the rep cant find something better tho. Just odd 😅
The company my card is through (Ay Yildiz) uses O2 & E-Plus
My signal's been great 😅 (albeit I'm in a city and dont intend to ever leave it)
Honestly, had the same problem with my network back in the states for that lol
I just assume rural areas will be crap
They are.
Atleast here
Thankfully, my phone supports wifi text/call (not an app, through the network)
So as long as I can find a hotspot 😅
Same with mine haha
Yeah, I dont see myself going out into rural parts except to visit other urban areas
So I'll take my quantity over quality network :p
Hahahaha enjoy it :p
Anyone reccomend me some good bars in vienna. I live on ullmanstrasse for reference, so nothing absurdly far away
Which Bezirk is that again?
@sick imp guide ur fellow austrian
15
bars
Given that I've never had a drop of alcohol, I'd say you're asking the wrong person.
You live in austria
ya but he doesnt drink
Has anyone taken TestDaF?
@vital glade
@tight kelp
i tend not to answer questions that aren't asked
someone may or may not have taken testdaf, yes. What is the actual question
@agile sleet u heard her^
(i know that i come off as a twat but i really don't see the point in people asking preliminary questions to questions, and for some reason it happens a lot)
I asked if someone has taken TestDaF, @tight kelp I've been doing a bunch of practice tests and I'm confused about the grading. How many writing, hearing, talking, and reading parts are there?
what i meant was that you could have asked this last question, which is what you actually wanted to know, right from the start and you'd have gotten an answer earlier.
There is just one part of each, but some have multiple "things" in it. For example, you have to do multiple recordings for the speaking part, but they're all done in a row. You can try taking their mock exams (they have a couple free to download on their website) to get a clear idea of what it looks like. If you time yourself you can get an idea of that constraint too, which I would advise doing
Yea that's what I've been doing. My timing is alright. I just wasnt sure about the grading part. What did you score?
i did it quite some time ago and never bothered retaking it, so it wasn't very good overall, but it did surprise me in that i thought my speaking was abysmal but i actually got a 4/5 there
i think the reading part is what would naturally come easiest to anyone, so aside from practising vocab I wouldn't focus too much on that, but personally I did find the listening part challenging at the time
and as i said, in my experience the speaking part can be scary but i think they're quite tolerant in how they grade it. I suppose they only care for how relatively fluent you sound, not caring for accent or (as they explicitly mention somewhere) grammatical correctness
writing can be hard too if you need a high grade, so i would practise that a lot
Thanks!
Guys, I got delayed because of some problems to get my bachelor's certification.
Do you know if there are any masters in english that have a deadline for application to the winter program that is at least 2 months from now?
I would like to not sit on my hands for 8 months just because my chancelor lost my certificate...
Wuppertal has one or two in English that are July 15th
But at least in Social Sciences, thats the latest I saw in English only (dont know about the more sciency fields). This is after making a spreadsheet of programs on DAAD 😅 (again, just in Social Sciences)
I'd say it might be good to look through theirs since the other programs probably have similar deadlines 👀 (most programs are either mid june or mid may though)
Some unis also do admission on a case by case basis after that (mine does for exampke) If you make your case, you might have luck with that 👀 @true citrus
Example:
Nice, they're pretty rare though. I have a bachelor in economics
The one with the July 15th deadline was "Applied Economics and International Economic Policy" 👀
@true citrus , try asking your uni for atleast a paper that states that they lost ur certificate? And perhaps try aapplying with that? This situation is astounding....
^ id reccomend doing that as well, and trying for the June 15th deadline unis (ive got a few programs in my spreadsheet if yoh need them)
It sounds like a rather unique situation, so I wouldnt be surprised if they were willing to allow you time to provide that document provided you could provide everything else (transcripts, letter of motivation, etc)
Ugh, anyone got any tips for apartment/flat hunting? Im using the websites and the facebook groups, but getting nowhere :/
Makler?
Hallo! Anyone went for the Master Program in CS at these universities (Saarland, Bonn, Freiburg)?
@fair talon yes look for a Makler he will help you finding a place
@faint plaza I meant what is a Makler?
it's an estate agent
A Makler is one who maklers
Maklemore
Maklermore*
to anyone who applied using uni-assist, when I apply for the uni I need to scan all the docs and in addition to that I need to send the hard copies of the language certificate and school leaving certificate(translated) through mail right?
so basically do all the steps on the online portal + independently mail them the physical copies?
please @ me
you need to seek out mr makler, and he will give you a secret key when you achieve the 5th heart level with him. This is his highest level.
This key will open up your new apartment.
Once you accept the key, mr makler may disappear.
do not be alarmed! We have allowed mr makler to go home and see his wife and kids.
He will be back shortly to makle with you.
Leben unter der Treppe
Oh, woops. Didnt even see that. Yeah, had to do the same for mine. Was super annoying since every program charged money to mail an offficial copy
@humble bough thanks!
np
They also mentioned you need to mail only once even if applying for multiple unis
Is that right?
If its uni-assist, I think? Would double check that for sure though
I remember the fee was one time, not sure about the documents
Yes uni assist
And I only mail the ones that need a certified copy right? The rest I just scan
Keep in mind, if it asks for a certified copy, thats a little different from originals. You can get them certified by a licensed notary person for fairly cheap and send those certified copies instead
@compact slate https://www.uni-hamburg.de/en/campuscenter/bewerbung/bachelor-staatsexamen/zulassung-einschreibung/amtliche-beglaubigung Uni of Hamburg had a good page on it
@fair talon I know that, my question is what documents I need to mail hard copies of
"Final grade or final grade point average:"
a hochschule is asking this on their application and they say to only input a number
i did A levels and we get grades...... what m i supposed to do guys
i suppose convert it, but i don't know what scale they expect
Depends. What country is your school?
There was a generic conversion scale for US ones that I used for my application
A- levels is a UK Board. but i havnt studied in UK>
Question for the ladies:
Does anyone have experience just having an IUD in Germany? I'd like to DM with someone about it 😁
I'm not familiar with the expression leben unterm dach. Is it like "daily life" or something?
Life among/under @keen copper DACH countries
actually it might be "Living under/among DACH countries. not sure
Oh, German speaking countries!
i am not sure if that means german speaking countries
oh nvm i ooked it up
ur right
D= germany
A= Austria
CH= swizterland
no room for liechtenstein because nobody ever showed up from there to complain
i'm not even sure they even exist. They're their own Bielefeld
Then where did i go when i believed to visit vaduz?
But i guess one could easily make it DACHL and have a diminuitive form, perfect for something with liechtenstein in it
DALCH sounds better tbh
it would miss the point because it doesn't mean the same
#archived-media für die beste Abkürzung
@ashen mirage I know people who’re in Stuttgart & Munich, not sure if that would help, are you currently staying in Germany?
Next year I'll enroll in the summer semester
I lived in FFM for three years and am originally from the area.
It's really expensive if you want to live in the center of the city. Rent is not a joke. But public transport is really good so even living not close to the city center does the trick. Oh, and FFM really has a center, meaning the 'city' part of Frankfurt is actually very small and since it's only very busy during working hours it can get kinda dead at night time, not gonna lie. But there's still a fairly nice nightlife going on if you're interested in that. Especially Dribbdebach (dialectal for 'on the other side of the river', referring to the part of FFM south of Main) has nice bars.
Is there something you're particularly interested?
Oh nice! Are you going to stay in school accommodations? I know some schools offer cheap accommodations and give you a pass to take public transport for free
You should probably see if they have some sort of welcoming committee by the school that would help out in getting you settled when you’re in school 😊
Also I’m not that knowledgeable on this thank you for all the info @sand cosmos
expensive af, it's not uncommon to pay around 400-550€ for a fairly small room in a shared appartment as a student.
Which uni will you be going to?
Goethe uni
Which subject will you be studying (I'm only asking because the campuses are widely spread all over the city)?
Mathematics
Bachelor's
@sand cosmos also i heard in expensive cities with high rent the payment of jobs is also high
Oh, it's in Bockenheim then. I lived 5min away from that campus. You can contact the AStA (General Students' Committee) of Goethe Uni beforehand to get more information and help with apartment hunt. They're very helpful with that kind of stuff. <3
As a low-wage earner I don't know that much about the general adjustment of wages according to the area prices but there are many fairly well paid job for students you can do.
Aw thank you so much for the info
can anybody give me a few tips on how to avoid the touristy areas near münchen?
dont go to the areas
Tourist areas @sinful temple
What ya wanna do in Munich?
Tell me what you wanna do and I tell you where you shouldn’t go
Easy
Ne 😂
ich möchte da leben
im going there for a vacation first though
@exotic barn please refrain from such remarks
Yeah I know Munich pretty good
then living there after saving x amount of monez
What ya wanna do is the question tho
idk anything
@exotic barn ich verstehe nicht deutsch
We got dachau near by
The English garden
Odeonsplatz
Beer gardens
Paintball
🤷🏼♂️
i just dont want to be surrounded by non natives or get scammed or something
Yeah skip those too places
Most natives will chill at the Isar
English garden
Or beer gardens
Small beer gardens tho
And not the big common ones
thanks for the info 😃
You Are welcome :))
I'm studying in Austria next year, is it very hard to get a part time job in Salzburg talking English/Norwegian?
I'm learning German, but I really don't think I'll be fluent/very good by next year
with many jobs you don't need terribly good german skills to work
oh that's a relief
zumindest ists in österreich so
naja, kommt drauf an, welchen Job du meinst
hey guys, is here anyone from germany or austria who could help me with some of my questions?
it regards schools and what profession you can do after some german secondary schools (especially Ingenieurmittelschule - für Bauwesen or für Verkehrswesen)
Just post the questions
Post the question and I can help you maybe @vestal pewter
ok 😃 so the question is I have a similar school to Ingenieurmittelschule - für Bauwesen and I can design houses and supervise construction site in my country, would I be able to do it in Germany or Austria? (if I somehow managed to get recognition of my education in germany)? Right now I am not going to move or something I am just interested in possibility @faint plaza
thank you, i really appreciate it
Yes yes and yes haha
Of it get recognized here in Germany you can do that
But as far as I know it is a long process
From which country are you? @vestal pewter
@faint plaza i am czech, we should have similar system
Should be easy than
You need a decent lvl of German like b2 or c1 i believe
I gonna search something for you later about that topic
Right now I am at work
@faint plaza of course, german is a must - thank you very much!! i really appreciate it
That is one of the main things I found
Sadly it is in German
It it is an official site @vestal pewter
@faint plaza thank you very much!!! thats ok i am actually learning german
i actually learn german*
Any students in Germany who can tell me a bit about health insurance?
If youre in a studienkolleg you must be private insuranced afaik
if youre in a uni, just pick TK or AOK
those are government insurance companies
Is there a difference between the two? A lot of my classmates have TK, but my friend has AOK
i have no experience with aok (aside from the fact that i know they bombard you with werbung in the mail) but my experience with tk is good
GOETHE CERTIFICATE
Passed a Goethe Certificate in accordance with the Rahmenordnung über deutsche Sprachprüfungen für das Studium an deutschen Hochschulen (Download, PDF) (framework for German language tests to pursue a degree at a German university).
https://www.kmk.org/fileadmin/Dateien/veroeffentlichungen_beschluesse/2004/2004_06_25_RO_DT.pdf
guys on TUM's website, the above link is given for ^ the requirements from a goethe certificate. what does it mean exactly? which certificate do they exactly require. please ping me.
it seems they might have changed/ increased their german requirements. they used to be B2 from goethe earlier.... but now "TELC C1 Hochschule" and "TDN 4 in all parts". thats why i am a bit confused that perhaps the goethe certificate requirements might have increased too.
Seems like it is different with each test.
For example: with the telc Test you would need c1
With the testdaf b2 is enough but I can’t find a point the Goethe one tho @tame forum
I mean you could call them and ask
Because I can’t find a point for the Goethe thing.
Hmm. I will definitely try calling then tomorrow. Its a bit confusing because i think they mentioned earlier that B2 from Goethe is enough... And now maybe they suddenly updated their website
Thanks for explaining what it was
No problem man.
I seriously can’t find a point which Goethe lvl they want
Or maybe I am just to stupid to see it
But if it is about the Rahmenbedingung than I would guess Atleast b2/c1
Yah i tried searching too using "ctrl F" command .... But then i thought to jus ask here cus i might br missing something that a native german could see
Yeapp. Sure will. dankee🤗 🤗
Bitte 🤗
@exotic barnhey
Yo
Its less crowded here
Lol yeah
Okay, whats the difficulty level in german univs?
Like
Throw me some stuff you learned there
I actually didnt start yet myself
But I know plenty of people there
It is nothing too difficult from what ive heard
But the language is a huuuuge deal
And plenty of people underestimate how good your german should be to study
@exotic barnpython?
Didnt you start with python?
And im starting to move towards AI
No
I didnt
Thats why i chose node
Idk, the first thing i was exposed to is node so
And i know a few concepts in os, theory of computation and other stuff
I see, how long have you been learning?
Idk my learning level/rate in comparison to germany
Oh
Umm
Its been a year and a half ig
Ive been focussing on my skillset for the past year
And now to the universities
I think i can handle them
Or at least i will
So, coming to the point
@sharp moth, what are the univs that you know of in there
What are the costs of living in those cities?
How long would it take for an average person to learn german?
The costs are pretty damn high tbh
Ohh
You need a side job
Up for anything
Is it possible to earn money prigramming online?
Idk, maybe yes
I can pick up concepts pretty fast tho
And what kind of jobs would i possibly do in there?
Anything, there are plenty of part time jobs for students over there
But again
Ou need german
It all comes down to your language skills
Did you check to see if indians need the preparatory year?
Ok, one sec let me check to make sure
@tame forum
Yep, you do need it
I suppose
@exotic barnyeah, you have to study the preparatory year
Alright, thats nice
Okay
You need at least b1 to enroll in the preparatory school
I see
And you need the preparatory year to study in univeristy
So, what you need to do now is simply start learning german
@exotic barnlol, living costs and courses and unis and all of that is still far away from now
Oh well
Just go sign up for a german course
You take the b1 in india, if you succeed you apply for a studienkolleg (the prep school)
You get an admission
Oh okay
You apply for a visa
So the studienkolleg is separate from the university?
@exotic barn yes and no, you usually have to apply to the uni, but since you only have 12 years as opposed to 13 they will send you toa studienkolleg
Some unis have their own studienkolleg, some will sebd you to another stidinekolleg that is based In Another uni
Okay so i apply for a univ and before i start the course, they'll send to their studienkolleg
Okay
I get that
@exotic barn ... Fuck they changed it to C2?
So, the next problem has part of its solution with the one after that
@tame forum oh, okay so it's c2 instead of just b2?
*b2
Oh okay
Earlier i think it was B2
@tame forum b2 for what?
Depends on the Uni, doesn't it?
So theres a1, a2, b1, b2, c1 and c2
@exotic barnyeah, that is the order
@sharp moth german
@exotic barnwhat do you wanna know?
It was B2 before and goethe was first listed lol thats a huge jump
I'd like to know about some good univs that you know of
I already looked up the internet, but this time i wanna know the living costs in their cities as well
@molten hearth exactly..... Smh.... TUM did us dirty
TUM?
@exotic barnunis in germany are usually pretty equal
Wasted my cash applyung there too. 70 Euros
@sharp moth i forgot what that meant.... Aptitude test?
Oof
@exotic barn learn to wait a bit.
@tame forum the final assessment test after finishing the studniekolleh
Okay lol
He is taking his time to explain stuff to u
Studienkolleg
Okay
Ahhh.... I never took a studienkolleg.... I think my A-level qualifications are enough to skip it
13 years of education....
Abitur equivalent I guess
If they arent at this point m fuked lol
@tame forumah I see, you are not required to take it, not even allowed actually
The thing is big name unis are increasing the bar for the students they take.....
I see
@exotic barnmate, stop thinking so far ahead, study german, then go to a studienkolleg, then you can move to a different city
@sharp moth yeah, but i have to worry about where im gonna stay and how much i have to spend as well
And my parents wont fund me till i tell them a detailed plan of action
Damn,I just heard of the testas, is it difficlt? Most unis just have it as a plus. It is usually optional, it never was a requirement
Thats why
@sharp moth one of my friends did it ... And nah it aint tough.... Its literally jus like an IQ test
No preparation needed to give it
Ohh
@exotic barn yeah, but it is actually impossible to predict where you will studybe or live at the moment, germany is huge with plenty of unis
Yeah
But there are no centres herr and its kinda expensive too
@tame forum where do you live? Are you in germany?
Nah.. dubai
Okay, so all i need to focus on is to study german for two years from now
Right?
@tame forum oh, are you emirati?
@tame forumhabibi haha
An expat here
So, are there other requirements beside that?
@exotic barn unis change their reauirements on a whim.... No use asking us since if we say something and it sticks in your mind.... It will mess up ur application
Mine did kinda too
@exotic barnyou just need b1 at least, so one year In india, then after getting a b1, you move to germany for the studinekolleg
From somehwere it had stuck in my mind unis didnt need uni assist...
And outta nowhere i checked yesterday and all unis were asking for vpds and stuff
Move where? Thats the question, and i gotta fix a location, right?
@tame forum exactly, germany in general is changing their rules for everything whenever the feel like, eveb stuff like visas and such
Yah.... Its kinda messrd up. This incident taught me to plan as much in advancr as i can
Yep, what is your level in german?
@exotic barnmessage me
Okay
So, I can keep your account
@sharp moth m B2 on paper.... Got my goethe B2 a few days back
What would you say would be a proper level for me to be on for me to apply to work at a German supermarket?
I'm going to apply to a couple anyway to see where I can get, but it's probably useful to see if I can test myself a bit before getting into an interview
Depends on what you do I think 🤔
The deadlines for applications are 15 july
Uni-assist takes at least 6 weeks to process but they get the document siwthin 2 weeks
Is it okay as long as my docs arz in uni-assist's disposale?
@tame forum did you apply yet?
Same..
@true citrus depends if your university needs a VPD or no
-
if it doesnt need a VPD: the moment the documents reach Uni-assist, and if that date is before July 15, then its counted as being in the deadline
-
if it does: then when it reaches them is useless......... when they issue the VPD, u habe to apply with the VPD to the uni..... and if they issue it near july 15...... then it snearly impossible to meet the deadlines becoz u have to mail the vpd to the uni again
What are vpd's?
preliminary document, where they check your studies are equal to abitur
if they somehow are able to get back to me in 3 weeks, it would be nice....
i read on their website for Europe they take 3 weeks...... i amm not sure if they mean for the certificates or they mean the place from where the application is coming from....... because my certificates are from UK..... but i myself live in middle east
VPD's basically confirm that your certificates are equivalent to Abitur
They say in the webskte if they require vpd's?
Messed up by thinking I had time, I don't have the freedom of choice now 🤷🏻
I'll just go for any school in my field that doesnt require vpds
@tame forum is it okay if I DM you?
I'm from MENA too and still confused about some stuff
yah sure dm me
I'll be acting as translator for a friend at the jobcenter. Any words or topics i should familiarise myself with?
probably legal and finance stuff if that friend is foreign
if they need translation at the jobcenter by a non-native like me, they're most definitely not german themselves :P
maybe they only speak plattdeutsch 😛
Is it worthy getting a stationery computer when youre a student?
🤔
i think that my laptop is fine so i dont want a new one but im studying architecture and itd be handy to have a pc to make some cool renderings
if you have a laptop as well but wanna play games sure 😛
and work in a lot of programs simultaneously
nah not for games
the thing is i will either buy a better laptop or buy a pc
😩
but what is cheaper and easier to do
is the question
well its hard to tell just like that 😛
we dont know what specs you already have and need
@exotic barn i can explain to you about the process. I've researched for a year and a half already. Do let me know if you need some help
@ashen mirage sure mate, dm me the info
maybe you should post it here instead so other people in need can also read it
It's a lot of info thou
You can tell me what you need to know about and I'll try to help
It may be convenient but you can probably use such resources at uni too. @odd bison
i could use some advice...
i am an american trying to become a student; i just got a letter saying my grades are just barely too low to qualify me for university, or even for a Studienkolleg. i have heard that there is another test i can take that is very difficult, is this true? and if not, what are my other options for getting an education? can foreigners apply for apprenticeships, for example?
sorry
i meant to post it elsewhere 😄
danke!!
Yo
Mein deutsch is nicht so gut haha
Master is mostly in English tho
yeah ill check there again
just put the filters for English
yeah, it didnt come up with much though haha
yah u wont find tonnes.... but still there are 1 or 2
I do groceries in Germany at least once a week and I've been wondering something
In the Netherlands our supermarkets have these posts where people will just put up their own advertisements
I haven't seen anything like that in any German supermarket I've been in (I might've seen one at a Penny, but I haven't been there in ages)
I’ve seen those in Billa in Austria. I think some stores here do that
So it's not unheard of, interesting
Idk about Germany though. Never noticed them
It looks kinda like this over here depending on the supermarket
And people use them for literally everything from selling scootmobiles to offering help with homework to looking for bandmembers
I was hoping to see if there's any specific supermarkets that usually have them in Nordrhein-Westfalen because I was thinking they might be useful for me to get in touch with German people who speak Platt
Oh yeah I should keep my eyes open next time I visit Rewe
I don't go there often 'cuz they hella expensive compared to Netto or Penny or Aldi
lol
They're just great because they're open 'till 22:00 in the evening even on saturdays
👌🏻😃
I haven't seen any of those at supermarkets but I've definitely seen stuff like that at uni
@exotic barn *hackfleischhassender
den Markt
eine Qualität (would leave out the article tho)
Ah so
und "nach ein" ist völlig falsch
Danke schön
gerne
what?
international students / anyone who has experience opening blocked accounts., is fintiba the best option?
i visited 2 websites and both of them seemed to be shitting on deutsche bank for their beurocratic procedures and lauding fintiba for thier lack of it and other stuff. it jus sounds like they might be paid for it.
jus ping me
so there is the possibility that i'll be landing three different part-time jobs in addition to the one i already have. As far as I know, if I get over 450€/month they get taxed.
- What do I have to do in that case, how do I pay those taxes?
- Is there a way to find out how much I would get from it net, to see if it's worth it?
- Do parts of the aforementioned "taxes" go to my rentenversicherung at all or is it all to the state?
Ping if you answer pls and thank you
1., 2. and 3.: tax evasion ezpz.
i am lawful good shut up
Might just want to get yourself an accountant
I wanted a general idea before that, or else i might end up spending more than i earn 😅
@tame forum Deutsche Bank is really difficult to deal with, but it's your safest option
yah i have heard that that its the safest and there are no hassles to make another accountthere....
Which city would u be going to, if I may ask?
not decided yet..... since m stilll awaiting uni confirmations
i have seen some people saying that Deutsche Bank has declined account confirmations and then there isnt enough time to get visas
really dont wanna be in that boat
Yes that is true. My application got rejected twice for stupid reasons
something similar happened to u too?
and how much time did they take to get back to u?
Yeah. The first reason was that my passport copy was unreadable. Which was bs. I got the copy done at the local German embassy itself, and I don't remember the second time
It takes a couple of weeks I think for them to respond
I ended up getting a Sperrkonto with PSD Bank
Got confirmation within a few days
Had no problems with it
yah. and through fintiba has the hassle of making a second account there........ it still seems more reliable than going thru the bs with DB
*though FIntiba
That does seem inconvenient
If youve narrowed down some cities , I suggest looking at the other common banks there and what they offer
hmm i had never thought of that...... so local banks offer this stuff too?
Yep
Make sure you're well-informed. But in case you still have doubts after research (try contacting the banks), might be safer for u to go with fintiba. Don't have experience with it myself tho
Nope
ahh okay. i wil look for local banks then thnaks
Wait by local banks I mean the ones in Germany lol
Just to avoid any possible misunderstanding xd
yah obviosuly lol
Good luck
@tame forum i saw good reviews on fintiba's google app and they're reasonable too
They're a branch of a bank called Mawista
nah its actually Sutor bank
Depends on each uni, so check their websites. @exotic barn documents needed usually given under “zulassung” section
I know, but the question was about, well, "appearance" of the documents, what exactly should be put in an envelope before sending it, in which order and so on.
For example, i didnt know that a cv should be signed. Thats why I ask if there are other paperwork rules. I dont want some triftle to affect my application.
@TᕼOT EᖇᗩᔕᑌᖇE ,1) the order in which u put ur documents isnt important.
-
depends on uni to uni. Some want signatures. Some jus normal photocopies, and some of them need attested copies.
-
stuff like Cv's and motivation letters- u can sign on them if u want. Official documents shud be attested if the uni asks that
Okay goddamn i tried. I cant tag u
thanks for the answers
so tired of the whole bureaucracy thing tbh
Nase voll, so zu sagen
bruh u r jus getting started
oof
Does anybody know what does Zustellungsbevollmächtiger or c/o means?
Someone whos entitled to deliver something
never seen c/o
No sorry, someone whos entitling someone to deliver something 😅 🔫
A single letter can change it completely
I'm trying to fill a form about Persönliche Angaben so that would be me? @dry nacelle
einfach leer lassen
Youll only need that if someone else hands it in for you
oh dumbo me, thanks guys
if i got several sheets of one document, do i staple it?
^
also if you have to send them off you can just put them all into an envelope
folded once, with the opening upward so letter openers won’t damage it
there are several documents and some have 2 or more sheets
ok thanks guess i'll be using paperclips
when it comes to german bureaucracy - dont staple it
ive heard workers might get annoyed
it means you need two printed and signed copies of your Zulassungsantrag
kinda strange but ok, rules are rules
thanks for the answer
i guess theyll have to send it to 2 different institutions
😒
Did you go to some cheesefarmer on some big cities market? lol
Cheese in Germany isn't really much cheaper than it is over here
no just to Albert whatever his lastname was
its like 12 euros for a normal cut of cheese?
Literally the most expensive supermarket in the Netherlands
It's worse than the Rewe or the Edeka of Germany
still much much more expensive
Yeah, like I said, because you went to the most expensive supermarket in the Netherlands
We have Aldi and Lidl too, y 'know
what is the most expensive in germany then lol
i mean compare and it is still way too much
Comparing the most expensive doesn't make sense
A country can have a cheese that is more expensive than the most expensive in another country whilst in the meantime still having the cheapest cheese of the two as well
It does make sense to compare prices of the same products in different countries
in supermarkets of the same "quality" range
If it doesnt make sense, how are you comparing stuff anyway?
like you are even contradicting yourself
'Wie ist es eigentlich möglich dass Getränke so billig sind in Deutschland? Wenig Steuer oder?
z.B. 2 liter Cola ist nur etwas von 90 cent oder sowas beim Penny
In den Niederlanden bezahle ich fast 2 euro für 1.5 liter"
you took the product - Cola, took a supermarket - Penny and compared the prices
Moz
Yeah, except I literally live in the Netherlands and do my groceries in both the Netherlands and Germany in a variety of different supermarkets and I know for a fact that the prices for pop are comparable everywhere. At the same time I know how big the differences can be between supermarkets when it comes to cheese. Prices per kilo for for example foliekaas are only 10 to 15 cents cheaper in Germany which is not at all comparable to the 1 to 200 percent markup for Coke
Gotta love them Pfands in Germany
and I know for a fact that the prices are comparable everywhere
what does it mean
elaborate please
i also live like 15 mins away from Vaals
which is located in the NL
Ya think
Why'd you assume I wouldn't know where in the bloody hell Vaals is?
Ciao
@odd bison >besten Käse - Gouda
pffft, bitte
hey, in uni-assist
Do I have to upload the translations? Or should I just send them by post?
they'll take a while to be ready and I'm wondering if I can apply online with the scans of the orginals first
if the translaitions r documents that also need notarisation/ attestation then u will have to send by post and jus uploading scans wont work. atleast thats what i have read on uni assist website.
Is there an income limit for student jobs for internationals in Germany? I know you only get to work 120 full days a year but I only heard of a 450€ cap recently
450€ is a mini job where you don’t have to pay taxes
You can work part time and not more than 20h a week as a student and earn more in Germany @limpid oyster
That makes sense
I was reading up on it
But mini jobs are good insurance incase I can't get a normal part time job
I figure finding a part time job as CS student shouldn't be hard tho, right?
Nope
Should be easy
Go for a student job if it is in your field
Way better than a normal part time job
There's a legal difference?
And yea that's what i want but I thought they just gave you a part time job with hours that help with your studies
Correct
Student jobs helps with the studies
Normal Standart part time job not
^^
How hard would you say it is to find minijobs with little/no German (English)?
Curious if it would be harder or easier than a normal job
Depends on what type of job
I know some jobs that are full time where you don’t need any german 🤣
Just trying to figure out what im gonna do with the rest of summer 😅
Showed up early because I was told housing is a nightmare, found a place in two weeks
Okey so
What kinda work you wanna do ?
Got a plan or nah?
And where are you located at
@limpid oyster can u share the link with me where u read about mini jobs and part time jobs? i dont know the difference between them 😅 and wanna know more
