Ye
Anyway it wouldn't make sense to go to a school without learning the language
or knowning how to speak it well
Yes, it would. I have a refugee in one of my classes, but the reason is to integrate her well.
Maybe. She doesn't talk very much.
Ah
i just don't know how did my dad come to the conclusion i'd have to repeat grade 12 affirmatively
He didn't even send my papers for check to germany
you can think of Studienkolleg as a preparatory course for university in Germany. You learn language and cultural stuff, and those topics and skills that are considered a prerequisite to university studies in Germany
O
I don't remember how long it lasts nor do I know exactly how well it performs in terms of teaching you stuff (i.e. if it's worth your time)
but if your school-exit certificate is not recognised, it's mandatory to enter uni
uni or school?
Your school degree is needed to enter a university. School in Germany ends after 12 or 13 years (depending on the Bundesland).
(wow that's basically only up to elementary school by Italian standards)
School in Germany is quite shitty. Everything's crammed. I'd need 1.5 times as much hours as given to teach my pupils what I'd have to according to the curriculum.
I feel that sentiment is shared in most countries
@tight kelp do you have any idea how did my dad come to the conclusion that I have to repeat grade 12
He didn’t even send any school exit certificate to Germany of mine
Italy's education system is rather terrible, and it's also constant battleground for populistic politics so you can imagine in what state it lies
@exotic barn I don't know your dad :P
I mean there’s no other way to check unless you send your certificate to the regional gov right ?
in any case, "repeating x grade" is a very vague and possibly even meaningless statement when it comes to cross-country education. The German system in particular is quite unique and unlike any or most others, so comparisons in general or in particular are especially hard to make
the most direct option you have, to my knowledge, aside from sending your certificate to be evaluated for Anerkennung, would be to email a relevant office or any specific university you plan to attend in Germany to ask whether they would accept a certificate of your level. You could also try contacting a consulate or embassy for your country in Germany, preferably one in the specific bundesland/bundesländer where you plan to study
Ok thanks
Embassy is where I thought as wel cuz the international office of some friend in Germany told me I’d have to go check in the embassy
my knowledge is limited on this, but as you come from the middle east I think it's most likely that you'll need Studienkolleg. But you're still in a phase where the only and most effective step you can take is gathering information to know what your concrete options are
Thx
@exotic barn check out anabin
and no
you cant go to a German high school
you will go to a SK or you have to do a year at uni in your homeland
Ahh makes sense
I’m glad I won’t even go there
I can cope with SK Lol
But then are you sure about this ?
ye sure
@viral geyser what do you think about german education? I’m a bit scared that I’ll be behind at the uni compared to the germans cuz the education in gymnasien in germany is better
@exotic barn eh dont think its much better
like many of my classmates are stupid colombos actually
i see it in their faces during tragwerklehre
you won't be behind
really depends on people themselves
What’s Tragwerklehre?
You might just be too smort foxxie
i think its understandable from the word
Idk what’s Tragwerk
tragen
so basically about constructions
Oh
it's abour statics
im not smort suzu
Re: that bridge that collapsed in Italy
Foxxie but youre a smort hardworking bean
i just want you to know that youll do fine
Thank you foxxie 💜💜💜
if you feel like youre doing worse than most, dont be afraid to ask for help
most of your future classmates will be happy to help you
👌
That’s reassuring tbh
but im sure you wont
cause yiy start from like very basics
Do unis have classes?
generally ni
no
but in architecture yes
Unis have practice groups and tutor lessons
How come?
we work more in groups
basically every assignment we get is a group work
Wow
I hate group work
@exotic barn @exotic barn Do not confuse general education with universities and industrial training.
Tragwerklehre is nothing being taught in general education.
She's going to uni
She's just misusing classmates
i know, but if you were a stupid colomban in school, its hard to understand tragwerklehre
and suzu was asking if everyone here is super smart
so im like no, relax 👀
yeah it is, and the answer is still about it
i was making an example with tragwerklehre
I’m worried about lacking basics (from high school) that i need for the uni
because its the only course i have that might be somewhat close to what suzu will have
😁
Richtlinien und (Kern-)Lehrpläne für die Sekundarstufe II - Gymnasium/Gesamtschule in Nord
you'll do better than fine, suzu
Here are the plans of what should be taught in North-Rhine Westphalia
adapt and improvise if something goes wrong 😄
@viral geyser thanks jeff!
@exotic barn thanks for your support foxxie ;-; 💜💜💜
@exotic barn you're really worrying too much :^(
You're almost becoming a German, @exotic barn.
Worrying too much and in the end everything's fine.
The germanization is working

til i've been german all along
Du wirst verdeutscht
eingedeutscht
should it be enough?
if the car or anything was from work then call them too
it wasnt her car
if rental car call them too
thats so shit
wtf i cant believe its happening
What even happened
I.o
A car stole his laptop or Wut lol
And all his things ?
I'm guessing laptop and/or other valuables were visible from outside the car, someone noticed and broke the window to take them
oh you mean a translation of what was said? They went back to their car and found it with the window broken, laptop and stuff gone
That’s unfortunate
yeah it seems like a pretty automatic precaution to take for me
nothing valuable should be visible from outside
ne, aus ner lochkamera
Meinst du, mithilfe der Camera Obscura gemalt?
genau
I have a w
Q
do you get the german passport if you study in german for a long time and live there ?
If you live here for 8 years, you may become a citizen and get a German passport. I don't know if there're other options to get it.
I don't think paying taxes is related. Indirectly sure, but AFAIK the law says only about the years of residence
Also I don't believe working is a precondition, if you live here. It may be a precondition to start living here though.
live
Gut
but to live here legally, you usually have to work
mhm tell me how you are gonna live 8 years in germany without a good reason
What
8 years means unbefristetes aufenthaltstitel
I’m just asking
Do you have to work and live
Or just live
if you're from outside of the EU, you need the official residence permit
I believe you have to work or sth to get it
Otherwise you're not allowed to live here, so you won't be able to live here for 8 years as well
did I say something wrong? Of course, you can also study or something, I don't know the details about that path
i mean, you said that you have to "just live"
but "just live" means to work and pay taxes apparently
yeah, but there're precondition to "live", I think I mentioned it
if you're from out of the EU, I think you need that Permit I mention, and I think they'll check if you work or study or whatever before issuing it
but that's interesting. Would studying for 8 years count as well? 🤔
depending on the visa/residence permit you are on I guess?
some doctoral students count as federal employee depending on their fundings
Hi everyone, I need a little bit help. I am waiting for my visa. But, I want to prepare myself for Germany that's way, I need some advices. I checked some websites like wg-gesucht and lieblingsmieter for accomodation. Have anyone an other advice for that? (I know that the visa stuff is not %100 possible)
However, I think that I will get the visa
So you're looking for a place to stay?
yes
it can be a flat share or a 1 room flat. But, I dont know much websites to search
it's a bit grey area but you can look on AirBnb, some places offer or even prefer long stays and in fact, that's how I started out before renting the actual place for longer term. But I'm a EU citizen so your mileage may vary
Try out immobilienscout
or immowelt.de
there're also companies specialized in temporary flats, like homecompany.de or hc24.de
ok. I will look at them thanks about advices.
@hardy wren
@exotic barn
lol sebi
wieso
warum sollte ich
hmmm
^
Also will auch da etwas besuchen
Besuche mal Potsdam
@humble bough los, sag denen was sie verpassen!
uh fuck what
oh uh yeah not even attempting german but potsdam has some fun parks and shit
when berlin got bombed to shit potsdam was still mostly fine so there's lots of cool old prussian stuff
yesterday I went on a tour of schloss cecilienhof where the potsdam conference was, that was cool...
^ tru storie
on days when berlin's air is too smoggy potsdam is usually much nicer so if you need ventilation lol
or if you get too sick of the hipsters, there are slightly fewer hipsters
you actually hear people speak german in potsdam
(I was in kreuzberg today so my view of berlin might be a bit skewed)
man kommt schneller ans Ziel
🤷
https://i.imgur.com/zPoc3wQ.png this is on wg zimmer and idk how to fill in my number
i wrote the rest of my number in the other box and it didnt like it
you can write +## prefixes as 00##
what does a random German number look like?
i did 0044 in that box
Can you try doing 44
nop that doesnt work either :/
the Vorwahl is five numbers
Man I hate having to supply a phone number. There are always problems with forms like that. The automatic separation of digits happens at different numbers of digits based on the carrier or something. I had lyca for a while and that number was formatted like this +49 0123 4567890. Now I'm on o2 and it's formatted like this +49 012 34567890
or +44 and then four numbers
if for example your number were 01570 7493837 then 01570 or +441570 is your Vorwahl
Well that explains why I always have problems. Nemo, you are such a helpful person
👌
Google is my friend ^^
I picked the wrong route to go to school today @hushed gyro
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freistaat_(Republik) republic, no special rights

This is a genuine question related to music, ignoring what happened during the second world war, how were jews treated in German/Austrian society during 1880-1900? I guess a better question is how were jews seen compared to the christian population?
Were jewish practices shunned or prohibited in those days
A little bit of what I remember from history class mixed with a quick look at wikipedia:
Speaking specifically of 1880-1900, Jews (in Germany at least, im not sure about austria) were officially emancipated and given equal rights under Bismarck after the unification of the German Empire in 1871. Public opinion was mixed to negative (as was always the case regarding Jews' status in Europe), partly due to large amounts of Jewish refugees fleeing russia in the 1880s. and the term anti-Semitism was actually first coined in Germany in 1879 or 1880. That was when the first German anti-Semitic groups were formed, and there was what was called the 'völkische Bewegung' but they never gained enough traction in government to change laws all the way up to WWI. Up to WWI, German-Jewish as its own cultural identity became more of a thing, especially in German bourgeois culture, combining rather than separating the two.
Can't say much about Judaism compared to Christianity at the time, though - and Jewish as it pertains to Germany was more about the Jewish Volk rather than the religion of Judaism anyway.
If anyone wants to add to that or correct me feel free.
@slim fulcrum oh geez rip
Do pillows go to the Sperrmüll?
We often have "Kleidersammlungscontainer", I'd toss them there.
Not sure if it's alright, though.
Just referred to an Entsorgung brochure and it says Kopfkissen goes in the Sperrmüll. Thanks tho 😬
Never threw away a pillow 😄
so
austria has no minimum wage
so like if i were to look for part time there
in like supermarket or retail or whatever
how much could i earn
like minimum?
there isnt a minimum wage but there are
what I would call workers unions
that regulate a 'minimum wage'
the legality of course becomes very difficult when in court or what you're actually entitled to
but if you get a job with any regular frachise, i.e. the rewe group, bakeries, even international businesses that set up shop at central stations
you would be looking at about 9-10 euros minimum
I'm speaking about vienna
your wages are higher because cost of living is naturally higher too
this will vary in region
if you struggle with things like this again, or are still unsure, I'd just look up german laws for it
it very much often happens where germany implements something and austria implements the same 5 years later after they see it worked out
after copying the language they copy the laws smh
I wish I was joking but pretty much everyone has told me it wasnt one
oh also isla with some special skills (like programming) you can land yourself some very cushy 1k a month plus jobs
which are part time
and can let you study at the same time
!!!
also check for your european status
afaik you have an english passport
wew is it that easy in at?
do they also hire in remote and stuff?
my roommate is doing sys administration and as soon as he's done he's practically secured at a place that already knows his schedule with physics/chem
and this is like
sys administration
it isnt anything fancy, a real baby could go in and learn it
@tight kelp not a damn clue, I could ask though
if you were being serious
oh please do if it's not any trouble for you
or send some resources/links my way on how to look for that stuff :D
but generally I thought it would be just as easy in germany?
guess who thought the same
and guess who is unemployed
and guess whether the two are the same person
no 👀 ?
!
you sure itsjust jobs where
you dont wanna debase yourself
andthats why you dont wanna go after them
THANK U& HORK
U DA BE
and like what else counts as special skills
does piano count
does english count
I put
(LIKE PROGRAMMING)
no everyone can speak english
maybe russian and chinese for tourism
I generally mean skills that are marketable and you dont need a degree in
just yknow
learning n dedication 😤
not a clue darlin
ye id probs guess not bc japans boom was 20 30 years ago
theres a job I applied for a few days ago
an ye i have uk pass
its like a baby sitter for a bunch of kids
but I just have to talk to them in englsih
ooo nice
because their richkid parents want them to learn a second language
wish I was that stupidly rich
@fleet pelican well I'm in no condition to move so that's why I look for stuff I can reach with public transport or is remote, and of course that restricts the possibilities a good bit but it's honestly a bit weird that I haven't found anything yet. But most of my perplexity comes from the fact that everyone looks to hire long-term (which I'm ok with tbh) but I can't find anything part-time or even one-time
ah ye
i asked my dad if i could apply for japan one and he was like no y u need that
rofl
@tight kelp huh, what kinda area do you live in
ah even a japanese one might not help
you'd still have to apply for a visa with both lmao
Serki, I mean, long-term tends to be preferable because acclimatizing to project, getting you into swing of things and processes, etc - all of it takes time.
ye
ngl, sometimes feel blessed to be lithuanian
Why?
thats bc u are bless 😤
hecke is a bless yes
@karmic yew sure but you'd think if elsewhere in the developed world part-time jobs exist, they'd also do where I live
@fleet pelican I live in a city :/
rofl nice
There should be part-time jobs , @tight kelp , but part-time in IT is, well.
It's possible, but not that trivial, to find. Keep looking, I guess?
I mean, to be perfectly honest in the latest weeks I haven't been looking very intently because I was focussed on other stuff and I'm not dying of hunger anyway
but sure I'll keep looking
Yes, you should keep looking.
Plus the usual: create a profile on LinkedIn, publish resume on whatever job searching websites are in your region, etc etc.
yeah I did all that spiel
I do get a call every now and then but for some reason IT companies in Germany tend to settle in remote places far from all public transportation 🙃
and I'm not going to buy and maintain a car before finding a permanent job. Probably not even afterwards
Maybe property prices or zoning regulations?
probably rent prices for commercial use 🤔
anyone live/work in Switzerland?
The answer to your question is yes.
Source: "In 2017, the amount of gainfully employed persons in Switzerland amounted to 5.03 million."
Which makes sense really. It would be a shit nation if nobody lived there or if everyone was unemployed.
Areng du bist so schlau
has any german citizen here brought their non-eu spouse to germany with no money 😩
whats going on here?
If anyone has lived in Rhine-Ruhr area please let me know. Soon I’ll move there for my new job so I want to ask about renting apartment there.
not much different than the rest of germany, just a lot of urban areas, the biggest ones are Köln/Düsseldorf/Ruhrgebiet
with rush hour traffic they are up to 1h apart (by car), less if you and your work are close to public transport
at what time do kids go to school in the morning?
at what time do uni classes usually start in the morning?
for me:
primary school: 8:15 or 9:00
secondary school: 7:30 or 8:15
Gymnasium: 8:00
University: 8:15 or 8:45 depending on campus
normally school always started 7:55 or 8 am and now uni starts earliest at 9:30 am
wow that's pretty late
yea but its nice because i have to travel 1 hour by train so :D
yea basically schools with a lot of commuters start later
i normally get up earlier to catch the train/bus ^^
oof
train left 6:15
im 15' away from uni by bike
oh you are so lucky xD
I want to live in a small inbred village
last time i had such a short route to somewhere was in primary school
where do you guys study, btw
I had a primary school nearby as a kid, but my mom didn't send me there
i study in vienna
Primary and secondary school in my home village, gynnasium in the nearest town, uni in zürich except calling it uni is confusing
Damnit why so early
because Uni usually refers to the UZH, another university
My school starts at 8:45 and it is 2 minutes on foot from me
what do you call your... college?
just by its name, eth
oof you practically live next to your school wtf
my dad used to live in front of my uni
my aunt lives there now
i wish I could live there ngl
@hidden briar Thanks for the info! My work should be right next to U-bahn. I’ll probably just use public transport
hey guys, two things.
Number one: while my bf was working today, someone reversed on him (he's fine) while he was on his work bycicle on the bycicle track while crossing the street, and he (my bf) had the green light. Anyway what I want to know is: the police had him pay Verwarnungsgeld; do you think the other guy had to pay it too? Since my bf was not in the wrong, is there a way to have this money reimbursed? What can we do if we think he's been unjustly deemed at fault?
His German is not at a level such that he could comfortably defend himself agaist a native who'd give an untrue or biased version of what happened, and by what he said I see zero reasons why he should be charged, unless it's a fee both parties have to pay just for calling the police.
(i'll ask about the second thing when we're done with this one)
If your bf paid, the thing is over and he's admitted to being "guilty". The only way to contest that is to not pay in the first place but once a fine is paid, there's nothing you can do
so in other words if you're not a native speaker of german you can be softly coerced into admitting guilt for something someone else is guilty of?
It's his fault for not contesting it. I don't know enough about the situation but German police officers speak English as well. Besides, accepting a fine is another way of pleading guilty
but he didn't understand that it was a fine, how can you contest an accusation if you aren't told that you're being accused? He simply assumed it was for the call. If a policeman tells you "pay this" you normally just assume they're upholding the law, not taking a shortcut at the expense of the most vulnerable party at hand
anyway, let's say this can be contested after all, where would we go to do it? The police or some other office?
let's move on to number two, which is more straightforward: my bf ha been asked by his boss to give him a list of days next year when he'll take holidays.
I assume (but don't know for sure yet) that he'd still be able to change those dates if need be, but is this usual or even legal?
We'd have to decide right now for what holidays we want for the entirety of next year and that sound a bit fishy to me, not to mention borderline abusive. As you guys may know I tend to be a bit belligerent so this may very well be me overreacting, but knowing something for sure is always better than not knowing so I welcome any insight.
I guess one thing to consider is in what way he asked. Whether it was just a request (it would be nice and helpful but not necessary) or whether it was an expectation.
Cause I don't think asking in itself is bad at all.
I'd... very much like to know the details of that myself :P
thing is, it's most likely some directive his section boss received from above, not his own initiative
@tight kelp It is fairly normal for companies to request their employees that they give them their holiday plans for next year so they can plan projects, etc. This is not unusual in my experience. I don't know if he can change his holiday dates once set, I don't see why not provided he does so well in advance, but they cannot force you to change your holiday unless they give a very good reason. I think so anyway, it really depends on the nature of the company.
also, is it common in Italy that you have to pay for police coming? That sounded unusual to me for him to think that
we have been living in germany for a while now. I wouldn't be asking here if it had to do with italian police ^^
oh sorry i misunderstood the question. No it isn't, I/we just assumed it was so because it was the only sensible thing we could work out as to why he would have to pay anything at all in that situation. We never really had to deal with anything of the sort before, we're rather lawful ourselves
I guess people who reverse into other people do it more predictably in Italy? xD Somehow nothing of the sort ever happened despite our native areas being infamous for their, should I say, aggressive driving style
@tight kelp the same thing w the bike happened to my cousin
He had to pay 500euros for 'damage' lol
Wtf
For me it was a much smaller sum so I'm not going to get through the trouble of contesting it but 500 is a bit much
the man across from me on the sbahn sat his full, lidless coffee on the seat next to him and is now just texting... are all germans so fearless
you're not even supposed to bring food and drinks on the train so... :D
pffft lol
never seen anyone following that one
I only take the sbahn for like two stops atm tho
My favorite German culture shock story was when I was at REWE and some guy dropped his butter and I picked it up for him and he acted like I did him some sort of massive favor.
Like if I had just given him €100 or something
Yeah
sounds weird, why didnt he just say danke and go on
Big supermarkets in Germany are REWE, Aldi, Lidl, Netto and Edeka
My favorite by far is REWE
meh? I always try to be helpful to the people in the supermarkets and no one is surprised -.-
Real and Kaufland are really huge
there's also aldi nord and aldi süd but you wouldn't see both in the same area
Aldi Nord owns Trader Joe's in the US and Aldi Süd owns Aldi US
If I go from Dortmund to Köln and have an Abo, does buying a Zusatzticket suffice? 🤔
I had a page to verify this but i'm not sure how to find it anymore
what kind of Abo?
https://www.kaufland.com.au/ Kaufland Australia site is live 😱
@hidden briar Ticket1000
no idea
we were able to go to Düsseldorf and stuff with that because the Zusatzticket basically extends the validity to the whole D area instead of just the A one. What I'm not sure about is whether that works for Köln too since afaik the company there is a different one
Köln is VRS, D'dorf is VRR

Theres also two aldis that have basically divided the world between them
this is the current map of their race to conquer the world
TIL that the Aldi here is Aldi Süd
I know the two different aldis being a thing for sure
but the netto thing is news to me and I think I've seen both and I can't handle

Do you think taking harder, college level classes in the US will give me a better shot at getting into a German university?
Do these kind of things matter when applying
I mean I suppose a univerity I would be proud to go to is Ludwig Maximilians (LMU)
but would that also mean that lower ranking universities probably wouldn't care so much?
Ok so this may seem like a silly question but bear with me. 😛
My actual first name is Morgan. Does anyone reckon this would be an issue for me interacting with people once I'm in Germany? It's not the world's biggest problem but I'm just curious whether it would seem weird, be annoying for me, or anything really.
Don't think so. It's not an obscure name and I don't see much room for misinterpretation in sentences where you introduce yourself

Does anyone have a guide/suggestion on what to do in Vienna during 3 day visit? (mid-December)
@sick imp
First time visiting?
Given that it's Vienna and it's Christmas there's a lot of stuff to do and see.
First time, yes. For weekend of December 14-16.
Anything specific?
I'm still deciding whether it should be 2 or 3 full days.
Schönbrunn, Belvedere, Hofburg, Parlament, Stephansdom, Natur/Kunsthistorisches Museum
really depends on what you want to see
Ich werde im Februar den TestDaF belegen 😱
Hoffentlich schaff ich den Test
Und kriege genug Punkte, um C1 zu bekommen
viel Glück
@final compass
👀
Beste Uni der welt
Ich will auch einen C1 Test belegen. <_<
Belegen oder schaffen? Rip
Anyone familiar with applying for Aufenthaltstitel for work purposes? To sign my work contract they need an Aufenthaltstitel long enough that covers the time of the contract, but I feel like it doesn't make sense for the foreigner's office to award me an residence permit without some kind of proof that I'm accepted to work here 🤔
maybe they're looking for people with residence permit
i mean for ppl who already have it
@final compass depends on what you want out of your visit, if you want more of like a see all the grand sights then visit a palace/museums if you want a more personal feel i can highly recommend just wandering around the inner ring, maybe stopping at some coffee shop, just taking all the side streets the tourists aren't on and enjoying it
christmas markets definitely
schonbrunn is also lovely if the weather isn't too bad
Thanks! Will add that to my route.
keep in mind it is a little off to the side, most of the rest of the things you'll probably want to see are pretty concentrated near the center of vienna and can all be walked to very easily
What's the best strudel place in Vienna?
my home
Hello, has anyone here gone to one of the winter/summer courses in german universities that the DAAD offers?
What's the best strudel place in Vienna that would be practical for me to visit?
I'm only in the 14th district smh 😔
cant even go out of your way to visit me + have the worlds best streudel
What's the second best strudel place in Vienna? :) Just as a backup.
Hello everyone
I wanna ask
So
I'm trans
And I wanna know like, how's trans rights stuff in Germany
bisexual in a homosexual relationship here and I've always felt rather welcomed. I don't know any trans person so I can't give any specific experience even second-hand unfortunately. All I can say is that I never noticed anyone visibly trans around the city, but that doesn't mean anything and it's not specific to any european country. :P
I have never met anyone here in switzerland who was trans and you could tell (by which I mean either: someone who told me their gender was different from what I assumed, or someone who was clearly trying to pass but was failing still), so either everyone’s in the closet or passing super well (something tells me mostly the former)
it’s also like, really not a topic that ever comes up, and I don’t think there’s much public awareness
I‘m in a bit of a bubble tho
i know at least one austrian trans girl, i could ask her
Plenty of trans folk in Austria but I wouldnt go into deep talks about it w them, they'll be friendly and friends but unlikely to be understanding
W other people*
as far as rights are concerned, I think trans healthcare is supposed to be covered by both statutory and private insurance in Germany as long as you can get a doctor to sign off on it, but the resources I can find are in German
I don't know any German trans people yet but I only know a handful of Germans so far anyway and you can't expect to just be able to clock any given person on the street as trans or not trans
Anyone here familiar with the University system in Deutschland?
I'm highly considering moving to Germany, and I've heard they like German Universities, as in hate American degrees
So, figured I should leave my uni likely to go save money for Deutschland
What are you studying?

Ah, thanks.
@solemn bay
I'm doing Computer Science.
My uni costs way too damn much (USA) so I figured since I'm immigrating anyways, studying in Germany should be my best bet for starting there
Sure.
Except now I don't know major employers in that field in Germany, but I guess I'll find out
I heard most developed countries are pretty nice for that path
A lot of people in this server are studying CS in Germany/Austria.
When I say a lot I mean like, a LOT, lol.
Jesus...
inb4 this server coincidentally starts their own software business
....
This looks unreal tbh
Never seen a living quarters be both nice, and less than $500 a month
we should have a role for "studying CS in Germany/Austria" lol
@umbral shadow major employees are basically any big company that isn't retail (and even some of them actually)
If you are taking a cs course taught in foreign language, you dont need deutsch c2/ testdaf usually right
Or does it vary by uni
Mist I mean admission requirements=/=course requirements right
I scanned the tu Dortmund site map yesterday and both German and English webpages did not mention a German admission requirement
Hey all, quick question. My university resources have been less help and I plan on studying next April in Germany. Specifically in potsdam. Does any one know a good place to fine available living spaces?
there's several websites for general stuff (airbnb) and wohngemeinschaften (houses and apartments rented together with several tenants, common practice in Germany for students and such. Often abbreviated to WG and there's a lot of websites for finding one of those). As for something specifically offered by uni potsdam, if that's what you're asking, i have no idea unfortunately :P
Thanks I was looking for indeoendant housing so you answered my question 🙂
hi all, anyone available to answer a question regarding a search for an announcement in the Bundesanzeiger I'm trying to do?
It's probably best to just pose your question
@solemn flicker I know this is late af (I don't check this server often lol) but since I have firsthand experience looking for housing in Potsdam -- just so you know, the housing situation in potsdam is absolutely abysmal (worse than Berlin imo) so start looking now if you wanna have a place for April. If you're staying for at least six months and money is no object, there are private dorms near several of the uni campuses in the city (they tend to be a bit expensive and require a pretty big deposit up-front though). It is really really really difficult to find a place to live in Potsdam and Berlin though. Like, I've been here since September and was couch-surfing until last weekend. It is really hard to find someplace without knowing someone involved personally, and searching for a place can be really discouraging. Feel free to PM me later on if you have more specific questions.
Sorry if this is a silly question, but I'm a bit confused about Abmeldung. If I'm simply moving to another apartment in Germany, do I still need to do Abmeldung of my previous apartment? Would it suffice if I just register my new apartment as my main apartment? I'm not sure how the database is kept.
I tried to google a bit and it really seem like Abmeldung is only used when you are leaving Germany.
AFAIK you are correct
Does anyone here know of Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences?
^Same question about RWTH Aachen.
@exotic barn im studying in rwth
War es schwierig, eine Wohnung zu finden? Wie schwer sind die Pruefungen?
RWTH in a nutshell:
If you're not gonna study maschinenbau, prepare to hate maschis a lot cuz theyre fucking everywhere. They will steal your lecture halls and you will never be able to eat in the mensa after a maschi lecture.
Night life isn't interesting here. I dont have any other experience but from what ive heard Aachen is a p boring city.
It's not hard to find a WG, dunno bout apartments. I'd say you should start looking 3-4 months before you arrive.
Dunno, haven't had any exams yet + I'm studying architecture so we generally dont have many exams. But there is a popular phrase about exams here "Try hard, fail harder" :^)
Well i think it really depends on you, just start preparing earlier and just study lmao
oh whats good about the uni is that there are a lot of interesting projects going on
and the uni works with top companies
for instance Bosch
and one can earn some good money
Thanks for the answer. I'm trying to find a master studies in Aachen, but they all seem to be in english here (leider).
why leider
was denn für einen Master?
oh yeah and uni campus is really big and good
cos i got a C1 in german, by the way C1 in english is not a problem too, just need to pay for CAE/IELTS, but they need a GRE too as part of Zugangsvoraussetzungen, and its a problem for me, because i have to go to another city in a 1000km from mine and so on.
was denn für einen Master?
Communications Engineering
are you russian
yes
what city
Irkutsk
ah
cant one take ielts in
irkutsk
ielts is ok, but gre is not
whats gre
GRE is mainly about maths, logic and a bit of sophisticated english
oh
native english speakers do it as well
well tbh rwth is a p chill uni and just try contacting them
they might accept you without it
if its not really important
and you might take it here in germany
or when youre in moscow idk
for example you can apply without a C1 certificate
but must provide it later
Ok, thanks for the advice
Maybe i'll just look for another uni, if there seems to be so much requirements. In Aachen there are just so many interesting elective courses, thats why i would choose it.
Was willst du denn studieren?
@exotic barn as far as I know it's 18, I'm not sure though (he asked what the age for going to a strip Club is in germany in the wrong channel)
@exotic barn def 18+
as long as 18+ you are fully adult
clubs make their own rules regarding admittance tho, as expected I guess
Can anyone tell me how Osnabrück is? And Westphalian culture in general?
I'm seriously considering studying abroad at Universität Osnabrück next year, when I'll have taken 2 years of college German
Hi, may I ask a question for Germans? Assuming that average salary for software engineer in Germany €50,000/yr, how much approximately single person will get after taxes?
im assuming a bit more than a half of it
47% or so
@frank tangle that's average for mid-level software engineers
I don't earn that much anyway
Wow, that's very sad. Everywhere the same shit. People work for being able to survive in order to work.
what
my wage is fine to live on
maybe if I had 3 kids and a dog it would be a problem
Just get 4 dogs instead tbh
I'm living on like €10,000 a year (net - it's a stipend so no tax) and it feels luxurious lol but maybe i've just got low standards after undergrad
heh
Maybe living in Frankfurt am Main should be tolerable for me
Goood ol'Duetschland requires proof of 8.700 Euros per year
frankfurt is p expensive
Figured it would be
Perhaps I can talk that over with German immigration officials in the Consulate
Or the University themselves
talk what? they wont change the money limit for you
I feel like living in Frankfurt for less than that would be tough anyway right?
there's no way it would be enough unless you freeload someone else's rent or something
^ Defs
It's hard to get a student visa for Germany. You need that money up front.
But you would also be allowed to work part time.
Where in Vienna can I buy a balloon (inflated, for birthday)?
Ah, actually google maps shows lots of places.
Hi (wave)
I'm planning to go to Cologne in March next year and I want to go see the Cologne zoo. For those who know, is it fine if I wait until I'm there to get the tickets?, or is there a good advantage in getting them in advance?
but it's safe to just get it there the same day?
Should be fine

Hello
I need help
What is studienkolleg?
for dentistry
Which subjects must i tkae
Take*
Wasn't there Zahnmedizin on the thing you sent earlier in questions?
yes.
But studienkolleg is a prepatory course
you must take certain subjects depending on what you're willing to study
it's for a year
@exotic barn i think you need M course
@exotic barn must I study up until c1?
Then enter the institute ?
Studienkolleg
Or is there no language requirement ?
Im not 100% sure since i didnt go there. You need either B1 or B2 level, there are entrance exams and for M course as for medicine in general you must have only excellent notes as 1.0 in german system
I saw some statistics, it’s like 1.0-1.3 i think? (100%-96%)
i think its more like 1.0 but not sure
What is that?
its like 4.0 GPA
rip
What is that
So I must have a really good score
Is it hard ?
To reach that score
^
How perfect your Abitur has to be to study different kinds of medicine
grades are 1 (best) to 6 (worst)
DN = average grade of your last 3 years
@exotic barn yes you must, if youre average isnt equal to german 1.0~1.3, im 100% surd you wont get a place
🤔 As far as I know the school graduation certificate from your country doesn't matter at Studienkolleg, but it does when you apply to a Uni that redirects you to Studienkolleg.
Was genau meinst du damit?
For all publications? No, definitely not.
Mostly governments, but even there the concept is rather new and not undisputed
Hallo zusamen
Hallo :)
I have a question about like German way of thing in general
I know the unemployment rate is low
But, how easy is it to get a job for a person with a Master Degree?
I think pretty much easy. (I'm living in the border but that's what i can see)
I'm sort of traumatized by unempoyment
Why ?
It depends of the master degree i would say.
Two !?
Well i would say like in France. Not so easy but possible :)
Is there anyone living in germany here ? >,
But I also was offered a permanent position at my current job, which pays nicely but it has no perspective in general
Hard choice ..
Ehh. Perspective is important, I'd say? Background of two masters and a research position seems like a pretty nice thing to have on resume.
I also have like a dozen of awards in design
I mean minor awards, but still notable
A friend of mine also have a master degree in Architects and easily found a job
I personally would rather work as a Industrial Designer.... I've specialized in Apparel design (like garment construction and CAD technologies)
And it is hard gauging the industry tbh.... I don't know market status or employment rates
I made an internship at Siemens in Germany, they may be interested in this field. You should check :)
Btw in Germany the industry work 35h per week ;-)
Hours
Arf ^^
There is a special agreement for the industry
Anyway, there must be some national institutions which collects the employment rate
I think it's called "Statistisches Bundesamt"
D: which country !? Japan ? X)
private comopany
Okay, I'm so happy not working there ><
LOL
More work = more munnies
Hum ... That is what the presidents say in France but at the end we keep earning less and less :(
Does anyone have tips for finding apartments in the Berlin area? My roommate and I are searching around yo no avail just yet
On top of that it seems everywhere I look is pre-furnished, is this normal?
from what I know, finding a place in Berlin is quite hard so expect to "couchsurf" for a long time before you get a more permanent place.
Where I'm at (which is not at all Berlin) pre-furnished places are hard to find but the situation here is probably a lot different than there
if ur german is decent ... like if u can have a decent conversation wuth germans then u can get internship/jobs easily
also if ur getting an internship, working hrs depends on the company which can range from 20 -40hrs per week
Are internships paid in Germany?
depends
idk when I looked for places I had trouble finding somplace pre-furnished but... I also had problems finding a place in general tbh
I realize this is late af but oh well
So it is difficult finding an apartment in Germany? in general?
Have you tried agencies?
It is difficult depending on the city you want to live in.
Or the region in general.
in Berlin it is very difficult
but I never tried agencies so idk how well those work
Does anyone know if it’s possible to study animal behavior in Germany and how?
some inspiration: https://unicheck.unicum.de/studium-mit-tieren
Danke! Diese Webseite fand ich sehr hilfreich :)!
I found this while checking if I'm able to apply to German universities
Does anyone here know what they mean by "11 Form"?
Just get German C1 ez pz
This isn't related to that
My High School Diploma and C1 certification arte 2 different things
BOTH need to happen
can somebody help me out with what the first button on my intercom is supposed to do? The one with the key opens the door downstairs but I have no idea what the other one is, and I can't ask my flatmate as he's gone for Christmas
... I'm just gonna continue not using it I guess
I'm still not sure how to use the intercom part of the intercom either anyway
ay someone else who just doens’t understand intercoms
I have to receive the IKEA people tomorrow so hopefully I figure it out
@humble bough cant you msg your flatmate? also, maybe your neighbors would know?
I mean I could do those things but m'social anxiety
the intercom has a sort of phone thing so I assume I can talk with that?
at least the IKEA bois call beforehand
hi guys
how do I apply for a language certificate in Germany?
especially for CEFR level
You sign up for an exam and go take it. There are multiple certificates tho
which place should I visit for the exam and which one is the one used the most and what are the examination period etc?
sorry for the many many questions btw!
Goethe and test daf certificates are recognised all over germany. depending in which country you are at the time of giving the exam, the "place" you visit changes. the frequency of how many times the language exam takes place depends if u go to the goethe institute (more frequent exams for internal students than for external people) afaik they ( goethe exams) take place atleast 6 times a year. and again once again depends on your country. search up goethe or testdaf on google. goethe is better for beginners since testdaf directly tests you for B2/C1 level skills
testdaf == a german ielts
@lunar garden
okay, sounds good. Guess I will find one next spring for a goethe or testdaf 😃
check the dates now itself. the exams are popular and in some countries there are waiting lists. tougher if ur an external candidate.
is it also popular in Germany itself?
since I assume most people already had it from their home country
oh about germany idk. i assume they take place very frequently in germany
no many people go to germany specifically to study german. and the exams take place there too
afaik theres also a visa one can specifically take to study german in germany
no totally sure tho
@lunar garden
There is.
I'll dig it up from here.
https://www.study-in.de
On www.study-in.de you'll get to know everything about studying and living in Germany.
DSH
for someone who has given a B1 goethe exam. do all the parts. (speaking, writing, reading, listening) take place on the same day?
They did for me
I've done a Goethe Exam and yes, it all happens on the same day @tame forum
das ist nicht gut 😦
The parts usually aren't super long.
Although mine was at my school and broken up into different parts.
Speaking was separated from everything else.
yah even ielts was the same. except speaking was not only sepreated but also on a completely different day.
and reading listening writing back to back.
i honesty think this arraangent in language exams is too exhausting for the exam takers.
and this is even though i am pretty proficient in english
@exotic barn is DSH a lot harder than goethe test?
how hard was it in your personal opinion?
I haven’t done it yet, no idea :‘)
And considering i did B1 Goethe and DSH is B2-C2 and for Unis, it cant be compared
hmm okay... gotta practice hard for it then... 😂
DB miracliously made it so that I only had 30 seconds rather than 30 minutes to catch a train
They are true Wizards
nah
the first train was just late
30 mins is nothing tho
i had 59 mins delay once
you only get money back after an hour or more delay tho
Just saying, 1 more Minute delay would have caused me to get there 4 hours later...
0:30 instead of 20:30
But I got the train
Than was the most time I ever almost lost in just one Minute I think
That*
i'll be honest, despite DB having its reputation, I have to say the situation in germany is better than what I left in Italy
you take things like having a train each hour going in each major direction for granted, and I would too, but don't underestimate it because it really isn't the standard everywhere ;)
i'm talking possibly having to wait 4 hours to get to a place less than 40km away just because the first train had a major delay
I'm not blaming the DB, I actually think they are doing quite a good job for all they have to manage
hey there, im looking for some advices for the college life in Germany. its opportunities etc i am planning on majoring English literature (with english language) in there but im still somewhat worried about the things;since i dont know anything about german language. Can someone inform me about the things i ve listed in above
English-language discussions and news relating to Germany and German culture.
read that first
for the ZDF fees
can I pay them just by standard bank transfer from my bank?
or do I have to fill out this form they sent with their IBAN/BIC and fee
yes you can. More information can be found here: https://www.rundfunkbeitrag.de/zahlung/index_ger.html
ah brilliant thank you

anyone here experience with Telc C1 Hochschule
Do you need to do anything special to move to a german high school?
Like to have some permissions or...?
@fluid swallow obviously general permissions, like a visa, and depending on age and which school you attended before that it will be decided what type of school you will be placed in
education system in Germany is a little different from the high school and college system
Is there anything more apart from visa?
he just told you, you'll need your previous education to be recognised to attest what level of school you'll have to attend
Ok thanks
That's not correct. A few years ago Germany made it possible for anyone to attend any type of school
(Hauptschule, Realschule, Gesamtschule, Gymnasium)
Though this depends on your Bundesland
(https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lehrerempfehlung)
A question for Germans and people living in Germany: I heard there’s a growing tendency of young people pronouncing -ig as -ik instead of -ich. Is that true?
yeah, because they read it like that and dont know that -ich is actually the standard
nobody tells them that its standard and they think everyone around them pronounces it wrong or dialectal since its written with g and obviously that means its a stop, i mean, we arent dutch
You sure its not just berlin? I mean, you guys pronounce ich as ik 👀
not sure, but i guess it would explain why other areas could do the same
Yeah, sounds reasonable
@exotic barn @glass trench @bold quartz thoughts bitte?
I've never heard of that tendency
Do people still pronounce it -ich in your area?
ye
^ agreed
Tbh, it was a teacher at uni who said that and i said it’s prolly just a thing in bayern but she didnt believe me
in the north the ik tendency is higher
Especially Berlin
id guess especially the regions near netherlands
I see....
weird because im from the north and I've never heard anyone use the -ik form
Same
I live in the Netherlands and sometimes hop over to german regions close to there and I've never heard -ik
I believe it’s rather southern Germany and Berlin 👀
I mean in Austria there is just generally less distinction between hard consonants and their soft counterparts so k and g just generally sound very similar
At least from my experience
do you get at the end of the year of the oberstufe in a gymnasium the grades as they do in the last school year in the realschule?
Last year in the Realschule I had like 4 in maths and in the second one I had 1 and 4+1=5/2=2,5 but I got a 2 because I wrote 1 again in the zentrale prüfung
