Hallo! Jemand hat geschrieben: "Auf der Heide" und ich war ein bißchen überrascht, weil ich dieses Wort nur als "pagan" kennte. Also, wenn ich alles richtig verstehe: "der Heide" bedeutet "the pagan" und "die Heide" bedeutet "the heather", richtig?
I think @slim sluice can help you out there. He's an expert on Heiden.
Idk where I could have heard it. 😳
its from a really cute song uwu xx
This is why you draw inappropriate pictures on bread.
i was just quoting best member blossom
does anyone know it German universities have a concept similar to summer-research programs for science undergraduates
@raw grove I just saw you on the Dark server

schöne Sprache

lmao ok girl
girl was

allgemein
All diese Sprachen finde ich durchaus schön! Meine Universität bietet leider kein Russisch an, trotzdem würde ich sie doch gerne einmal lernen

Immer
Sie können dich Russisch Lehern
Ups ich habe ein verb verlegt
alle dieser Sprachen oder all diese Sprachen*
trotzdem würde ich*

Sie können dich Russisch Lehern
@gentle condor lehren?
dir lehren
'jemandem etwas beibringen' kommt auch häufig vor
zum Beispiel: "ich bringe mir Deutsch selbst bei"
"hast du das dir selbst beigebracht?"
Lehren verlangt den akkfusativfall oder?
"ich bringe meinem Bruder bei, wie man sich in der Öffentlichkeit verhält"
er Lehrer lehrt dir die Sprache. Er hat es mir gelehrt. Dir wird die Sprache gelehrt.
'dich lehren' = to school you
z.b. "that's me" = "das bin ich"
so bin ich
ich kann nicht deutsch verstehen lol
@gentle condor was meinst du damit?
ich frage dich weil dieser Satz falsch ist
oder glaube ich zumindest
der wäre nur richtig in so einem Kontext: "verstehst du Deutsch?" "ich kann nicht Deutsch verstehen, sondern Russisch" (there was a misunderstanding about what language you understood)
idk how to say it in german but. whenever im speaking to someone who has a higher level in german than I do i just cant understand them
"i don't understand german" = "ich verstehe Deutsch nicht"
ya thats what I meant lol
"i don't understand your german" = "ich verstehe dein Deutsch nicht" = "dein Deutsch verstehe ich nicht"
well thats true too
"i don't understand any german" = "ich verstehe kein Deutsch"
"i don't understand german (as in 'german makes no sense')" = "die deutsche Sprache verstehe ich nicht" = "ich verstehe die deutsche Sprache nicht" (depending on emphasis)
ah I see
or "das Deutsche macht keinen Sinn" or "Deutsch macht keinen Sinn"
es gibt viele Möglichkeiten lol
ich muss nur zeit brauchen
hä?
kannst du in englisch korrigieren?

danke

ich facepalme grad
ich muss nur zeit brauchen
@gentle condor this means "I just need to need time"
ah
Ich muss mir nur Zeit nehmen
that means 'make time for something'
exactly
alright sweet
wie kannst man sagt, "I just need to take my time"
oxygen, warum bist du nocht nicht als C1 eingestuft? dein Deutsch ist verdammt gut
wie kannst man sagt, "I just need to take my time"
@gentle condor wie sagt man*
so for that what youre saying is you just need t og oslowly
ja
thats an english idiom that doesnt exist in german
sheiße
so maybe youd say 'i just need to go slowly'
"ich muss langsam gehen"?
just say despacito
dont be dismayed though, many idioms are shared, like 'mit etwas zu tun zu haben' (to have to do with something)
lol
hmm
but isnt as formal sounding as proceed in english
Ich finde vorgehen passend
or i guess i meant 'you wanna fight about it?'
🤼♂️
ich glaube dass es "vorgehen" nicht is
@gentle condor nicht "vorgehen" ist*
ist
Dieses wort ist wie gehen, aber es geht mehr um den Prozess
jd, bist du silly?
shut
z.B. 'wat is dat? oh, dat is en kat'

z.B. 'wat is dat? oh, dat is en kat'
das ist englisch
haha fast Englisch
no
Scheissdeutsch is just dutch
lol
nein, ist's nicht
mMn
nein es ist Texasdeutsch
Scheißdeutsch ist ein eigener Dialekt von mir
ich meine dass ich ihn selbnt erfunden hab
enlisch ist ein Dialekt
der hat viele features aus vielen dialects
Gehoert das Wort selbnt dazu
ich bin müde
🙂
wie z.B. "meinem Nachbarn sein Kat is am Essen"
lillie you cant say 'zusammen' with anything other than certain greetings
Achhh es tut so weh
Voellig verstehbar
bulli said that it was correct 😠
meh
bulli is nicer than you jd, bulli is my favorite parent
it seems weird though, it doesnt really occur in natural german unless its used with 'an alle'
you just say 'gute Nacht'
im goinga sleep
you could say 'gute Nacht an alle' but thats much more formal
night lillie!
im sure when you wake up a native speaker will be in here telling me im wrong and that you can say 'gute Nacht zusammen' lmao
in which case listen to them
(obviously)
You can use zusammen in other parts of speech, wtf?
Idk i thought it was wrong when i first saw it
I meant at jd
Ich glaube, dass man kann das sagen
@ancient carbon das sagen kann*
denn man kann auch "hallo zusammen" sagen
@ancient carbon thats a bad argument lol. seriously, look up "Gute Nacht zusammen" in a corpus and you dont find any hits
language isnt logical
just wait til you hear about Oberfeldbesetzung
atleast you can speak noam
Smh u can speak too
"ich wusste nicht, dass man sowas nicht hätte sagen sollen"

"ich wusste nicht, dass man sowas nicht hätte sagen sollen"
@ancient carbon look where the conjugated verb is in this relative clause
The fact that i didnt even notice
they dont
Why is it correct tho
but if you live in germany youll come across it about once a day
its too complicated to explain the whole phenomenon of it noam
K then when do you put it first as opposed to last
but in this instance, its like that because its Konjunktiv II in a relative clause with a double infinitive
Nur DE
so its not exactly something that happens all the time
:((
"yerman is preferred"
yerman
ich erkläre ihm die deutsche Grammatik
yeah thats how spanish native spakers pronounce german
obviously only some though lol
aleman
Ist konjunktiv 2 mit zwei anderen Verben immer in der ersten position?
ne?
will do
Ja stimmt
Komisch
it can happen without Konjunktiv II, sometimes its optional, etc.
its too complicated ot explain the whole thing here
especially for something that you might come across once in the whole next year lol
naturally
i just love to drop things like that because its intense
Könnte man nur immer sagen "dass ich das sagen können hätte"
nein, das darf man hier nicht sagen. ist nicht "optional"
Scheiß
es kann sein, dass Muttersprachler es so sagen, weiß ich nicht
Ist quatsch
aber was die formelle Sprache angeht wäre das falsch
Könnte man nur immer sagen "dass ich das sagen können hätte"
@ancient carbon idk what you meant with 'nur immer sagen'
btw people almost never use 'sagte' in speach
Welcher Unmensch hat den Daumen runter gegeben
i could be wrong here but your sentence seems unnatural, and you use sagte a lot
lmao where do you see that oxygen
Weiß nicht warum ich sagte das
@ancient carbon you had it correct the first time. warum ich das sagte*

Ich werde nur "hat gesagt" jetzt benutzen
mich geht das nichts an
Also ok
ich klicke nicht darauf lol
'hab gesagt' you mean
or 'gesagt hab'
i use sagte in 'ich sagte ihm'
Thats what i meant
but in relative clauses it seems like i would only use gesagt hab
Klar
Ich werde nur "hat gesagt" jetzt benutzen
@ancient carbon ab jetzt werde ich nur "hab gesagt" benutzen
ab jetzt = from now on
Ah ok
Ich soll das wahrscheinlich wissen lmao
Ich muss weitere präpositionen lernen
"sollen" is a very strong word
using it with Konjunktiv makes it softer
Ok
i know you meant "i probably should know that" but idk, it seemed unnatural. maybe 'das sollte ich vielleicht wissen'
the other corrections i gave meant 'i should've known that'
So you would say should have and not should know
i changed wahrscheinlich to vielleicht there btw
well the ymean different things
"i should probably know that" i think is an english meme
Meme?
meaning "i learned that, but forgot it, so really i should know that"
or "i need to know that for an upcoming test"
something like that
Yeah fs
yeah i mean technically language is a meme
Tru
but what i mean is if you say it literally in german, it wont carry the meme status from english
so saying something like 'i shouldve known that' is similar and natural sounding too
Yeah i get what u mean
im nitpicking but i hope its helpful lol
You cant just "know" something in pressnt tense if you mean "learn"
Idk if that makes sense to u but it does to me
oh you were talking about a correction or something lol
ohhh
not necessarily
the only way to know is to have read/heard millions of words of german
so then you know that thats not a phrase
What i mean is that even in english that sentence shouldnt make sense
it makes perfect sense to me
yeah but you didnt know it then, so you dont know it now necessarily
but i see what you are saying now
in turkish they do the opposite for some sayings
they use the past conjugation for the present
Weird
when expressing emotions
like if i said something
youd say 'i liked that' in turkish rather than 'i like that'
so its really an arbitrary choice
Ive heard people say i liked that
When the thing was still happening or being shown
"ich habe schon mal sowas von Leuten gehört"
german does have the double infinitive thing but its weird and you have to cjungate it differently, and its very literal
"ich habe ihn essen sehen" = i saw him eating
Das ergibt mir wenigen Sinn
Shit
yeah i dont have an explanation for that lol
I thought since its keinen sinn
K that ones not my fault 😦
yeah and idk what the rules are for when they are or not lol
youd say "das ergibt viel Sinn"
"das ergibt wenig Sinn"
"das ergibt keinen Sinn"
oh watch this trick
Ich werd das mich erinnern
sich an etwas erinnern
that also means to remember
as in recall
so theres no 'good phrase' for it so to speak
Doesn't recall mean the exact same thing as remember
from an english perspective
"daran werde ich mich erinnern"
nah, we use 'remember' to also mean 'memorize'
"remember these words!"
means "memorize these words so you can recall them later"
Ahh
so theyre telling you to remember them in the future
which as native speakers we know take to mean in the present so it has 2 meanings lmao
I should probably learn abt english before learning german
nah its ok, that wouldnt really get covered
just know that words dont line up lol
like how theres no german word for awkward
peinlich
for socially awkward things you use embarrassing, for physically awkward things you use clumsy
if you wanna use it in the english sense then you say 'awkward' with a german accent
unangenehm
ahwkwuhd
Ach wurd
Bruh
in this case, manchen is manch but in plural dative lmao
similarly "das ergibt keinen Sinn" could mean that too
but instead youd say "das ergibt keinem Sinn"
keinem = to nobody
Oh i see
its not modifying Sinn
people dont say that though because it can be misheard lol
but it would be grammatical
But then if u wanted to say that it makes some sense, wouldnt you also say "manchen"
Cuz masc akku
Yeah wtf
youd use 'wenig' lol
But i was tryna say that makes little sense to me
"das ergibt mir wenig Sinn"
you had it correct except for wenig
as we already discussed
"nur wenig" then maybe
oh that would be little
some sense really means little sense here
looking online people have said 'ein bisschen Sinn'
it doesnt sound right to me but id have to defer to a native speaker
i mean hell i myself might even say that, i have no idea lol
What's the confusion here?
how do you say 'that makes some sense' in german?
base is about to take away my C flair for not knowing with 100% confidence haha
No, stuff like this is hard.
Ive seen people pass the cambridge english c1 tests with a far worse grasp on the language than u
also Sinn is both countable and uncountable in this context which makes it even more confusing
One way you could say "that makes some sense" could be "Das ergibt irgendwie Sinn", I think.
yeah there were some folks at college who had awful english but still passed the test lol
It's like saying "That kinda makes sense."
meta lol
noam what do you think of this: "das ergibt einen Sinn"
thats why i said its both countable and uncountable lol
I mean "irgendwie"
"ive heard that sentence" was referring ot rigendwie
But what does your sentence mean?
"and yep its real" was referring to "einen Sinn"
it means the same thing as "das ergibt Sinn"
I mean I guess it makes sense that "einen sinn" exists assuming "keinen" does aswell
And another way to say "that makes little sense" could be "Das ergibt kaum Sinn" which is like "That barely makes sense".
no noam i think you use 'kein' with uncountable nouns too like yogurt
"es gibt hier keinen Joghurt mehr"
Right
i like that one base
If kaum and irgendwie exist, then which one is a synonym with wenig?
Neither.
you can also say "das ergibt kaum einen Sinn"
irgendwie = somehow when translated literally
Wenig is like "few", irgendwie means "somehow" but it also can mean "kinda", and "kaum" means "barely/scarcely".
So when i say "Das ergibt mir wenig Sinn" what am i saying
"thatmakes little sense to me"
So the same as kaum
😦
base i am consantly asking myself how i know all this lol
i somehow just absorbed german onec i reached a certain level
Talking i guess
well i didnt talk til i was already able to read novels lol
aside from being forced to say like 4 sentences every time i hadclass
How did u work on ur accent then?
talking wont teach you the fine nuances of kaum vs. wenig vs. viel etc etc tec unless you are hearing them used when talking
Did u just do that later
you can work on your accent without actually producing the language
i worked on my accent from day one
talking wont teach you the fine nuances of kaum vs. wenig vs. viel etc etc tec unless you are hearing them used when talking
@twin plaza thats what i mean
Once you have the capacity to understand sentences then you can absorb a lot of media pretty fast just by being around it a lot.
Once you have the capacity to understand sentences then you can absorb a lot of media pretty fast just by being around it a lot.
@opal sequoia yeah im getting close tothat point with swedish now. it takes forever to get the really basic words ingrained but then everything starts clicking without having to think much
How many fkn languages are you learning?!!?
U got german turkish and now swedish?
yeah swedish is an experiment i started in 2015
it was to prove that i can learn it w/o grammar lessons, classes, textbooks, etc.
i allow the use of a dictionary and thats it
And you just didnt learn grammar?
its basically english+german but then dutchified and swedishified a bit
Fair
almost every piece of grammar in swedish exists in english and/or german
i started italian through absorption recently too, but i havent had much mental energy to spend on teh languages
I imagine also having learned a second language before helps you skip a lot of steps anyway.
if i actually focused on them like i did with german then id make very quick progress
Usually the people who need to focus the most on grammar are people who haven't learned any similar language before.
Whereas if you learn one language and then another one very similar, even if there are differences, you can probably connect the dots most of the time.
That doesn't count native languages, of course.
plus when learning 3rd etc. languages you already know what works for you so you dont have to waste time finding resources
one thing i found that really helped me base was seeing how different languages could be
aftre learning turkish i feel like ive seen it all
Yeah.
so nothing really phases me anymore. if i come across a sentence and the words seem like theyre in a random order, i know that itll click eventually
I've been trying to learn Polish off and on since before I learned German. I still don't know it at all since I haven't been able to commit a solid period of time to it, but even just reading about the grammar helped me a lot even for understand German grammar.
Or just generally having a broader concept of language.
yeah and now that youre at a high level in german, the polish case and gender system wont phas eyou as much
🙂
you intuitively grasp how it works, and you also have the confidence that youll be able to learn it
Sadly, German doesn't help at all with the complexity of Polish.
The declension is hell.
But Polish sure makes German declension look like nothing.
The pronunciation is hell
honestly when i started learning german i probably didnt think id ever be able to use words correctly. it seemed impossible to learn genders/cases
yeah polish declension seems extra lol
The names tho
I find the sounds easier to produce in Polish, although I can't speak quickly.
German sounds were harder for me to learn.
Still no idea how to pronounce durch
Polish has really easy gender.
Like how r u supposed to do the soft ch after ur
But the declension is so hard.
theres a few different ways to say durch
that ch is like in ich
base it took me two years to realize that the german R was uvular
i thought it was like thespanish R
so i spoke like that, but it never sounded right lmao
Like even though it only has 3 genders it has like 13 different noun categories or something.
Vocaroo is a quick and easy way to share voice messages over the interwebs.
im like why dont my R's sound right
Maybe even more if you add in the different exceptions to that.
This is me trying to say durch
i came across a video that showed native speakers saying words with R in them and im like wow, thats uvular
Luckily my mom took german in college and her pronunciation is pretty ok so i got uvular r and shit
noam you were pretty close in the middle of that recording. at the end you went back to dorch though
I just cant have the back "oooo" and immediatly go "eeeech"
And the r makes it even harder
click the little speaker button. ignore the swiss pronunciation though lolo

the 'eeech' isnt nasalized though noam
Was i nasalizing it?
idk
but if you were that would explain why its impossible
youd have to open your nasal passages halfway through lol
like vietnamese or something
it is pretty much as simple as dooo-eeech
i probably just said 'durch' to myself 70 times in a row lol
like over the past 2 minutes
Mee too hahah
I was wondering if I could uh learn German here..?
by here do you mean this server?
Yeah and in this channel.
yeah this is a great place to learn

Okay thanks for the help! I’ll learn some after my cod session!
without an R it would rhyme with either Buch (long u) or Bucht (short u)

I think the reason im holding the ch so long is cuz its not in a sentence
im about to go t ebed btw
Yayy
most of the word is the vowel(s)
Decent is what im going for
nett
even in the sentence you held the ch too long
and still your U isnt german enough
only if you make your U more german and dont hold the ch as long
lillie im teaching noam how to say 'durch' lol
Vocaroo is a quick and easy way to share voice messages over the interwebs.
its like du-euch
i think that was worse than the last one
idk
i mean i know exactly what youre saying, its not bad at all
in isolation though its ver ynon native
also i guess its more like du-ich
rather than iech
its not too hard of an E sound
Vocaroo is a quick and easy way to share voice messages over the interwebs.
next up youre gonna learn Storch. that one is advanced lol
ahhhhhh
ok youre rounding your lips like theres an english W sound
get rid of that and i think youre gonna be pretty much there
rip imagine
Vocaroo is a quick and easy way to share voice messages over the interwebs.
Thats probably horrible
Shit deleted it again
Probably for the better
bruh 😔
bro you said dorch den Storch
If i try doing that it sounds like dorch
Yeah exactly
I have to round my lips
What else am i gonna do
yeah they need to be rounded
when i said not super rounded i meant like
if you do a really hard U sound in german your lips almost close
like if i try to put my pinky in, it touches on all sides. very close
Vocaroo is a quick and easy way to share voice messages over the interwebs.
for durch, its like the U sound but your jaw is relaxed
and the opening to your lips is wider than it is tall
for U it gets more circular
bitch lasagna v1.2
btw when i said 'you' in the past bunch of comments i meant 'an accentless speaker'
not you specifically
man
alright im gonna get off now
Ok
i think youll master durch through other words
like youll improve your pronunciation on other fronts
and the next time you try itll be much better
lol oxygen
Thats what i was gonna say

Its kinda boring tbh
I only did it cuz i had 2nd period free last year
And no friends who also has 2nd period free
Every period daily, but mondays every period was short
That doesnt sound fun
its actually pretty nice when you get used to it

Knowing my teachers, there will be no free time

Yt ads are annoying
they are
Tru
but they get money through sponsorships
If i really care if someone gets money i would donate to them
lol true
Also most of the people who i would actually want to give money dont get much from ads anyways
Cuz their content strays too far from the overton window
Yeah
Hahaha
I'd honestly probably put "cool" as the first translation since its the most common imo

While we do understand that you mean no harm and are only joking, we do agree with others that seeing higher up level A speakers referring to themselves as A0 could demotivate learners who are just starting out. So while we're okay with jokes and fun, allowing this to continue for a longer time wouldn't be ideal. If you do want to goof around and form secret clubs, other tags or emoji are perfectly fine.
