https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiced_uvular_trill
There are quite a few languages that have it, apparently.
that’s literally the list I just referred to as being euro-biased
Well, if you say so.
generally, linguistic information is very eurocentric
there’s tons and tons of super detailed descriptions of every minor european language
but african langs with millions of speakers where you won’t find anything but a rudimentary wordlist
any sort of frequency lists like this must be taken with a tablespoon of salt
always
considering uvular sounds are comparatively rare in Europe compared to the rest of the world, the fact that almost all uvular trills appear to be in europe makes no sense
from a pure probability standpoint
i wpuld be suprised to see another language family where it's that relatively common
I mean uvular sounds in general are pretty common https://wals.info/feature/6A#2/19.3/152.9
@spiral stratus I didn't notice that you had tagged me. I think that that is amazing and a lot of people don't have the need to learn the complicated Computer Science behind just the simple Programming. Of course one is paid based on his knowledge and that is how it should be honestly. A lot of these same principles (that one learns in school) can be learned practically from a seasoned developer too. I think that we need not discriminate based on just school.
it’s just htat the uvular fricative and trill aren’t often distinguished since they are very similar, and people prefer classifying sounds as fricative over trill :P
maybe as a product of production. it's biased to the one language, but i haven't heard many germans with a really strong clearly trilled uvular r. to me it on average sounds a lot more "mushy" compared to the couple really strong ones i've heard
yea in German it definitely tends towards fricative
It's even an approximant for some speakers.
Geburtstag. Dazu kam die ganze Familie zusammen. ->
du bist so fortgestrittene verdammt
Fitgeschritten
Wo geht es Deutschland? Viele Menschen sein krank? USA ist schlecht
hallo!
anyway @cloud sierra essentially A is too low for A levels I think and C would be relatively rare
so ye
twas what i was thinking
what other a levels do you do?
i do IB which is equivalent of A-levels ish
ah fair
wbu for a levels
I do Maths, Further Maths, Physics, German
nice maths gang
yh
dont know where i wanna go though tbh
oxbridge seems cool but the offers are insane
@fossil nova what uni are you plannin on
I have an offer from Oxford and my predictions are above the requirements so should be going there
damn very nice @fossil nova
@glacial pier higher level, standard
gotcha
*higher
did you do the physics challenge @fossil nova
but then was ill for the physics olympiad round 2 and stuff so never got to do stuff in y13 :(
f
did you do it?
yh only silver tho
and don't call me a genius lol, i got lucky on the paper too
if you think he's a genius just because of that you should wait until you hear his German
ah ok, i heard this year's paper was hard
lol vezel
my german would make him think me less of a genius
yh it was for me anyway
I am still B on here lol
you reading tough books tho
hmm yes
rn both my books are in English 😄
but thanks
I need to find another german book to read tbh
but then was ill for the physics olympiad round 2 and stuff so never got to do stuff in y13 :(
@fossil nova oh i am also studying for bio olimpiads
have you ever won any international medals?
in my part of germany that isnt true
this joke totally hasn't been told a trillion times since even before the crisis
Was ist die Wurst Käse Situation?
pun on worst case scenario
also "würst" as it's written in the screenshot isn't really a word
@rigid basin lol no
I missed two of the last rounds before the selection camps due to being ill etc
Wait no
Three
:(
Have you then lol
sounds bad, i hope they choose me for the national team
its hard to being top 4 biology student in turkey
Why arent you top 1
What top are you at
its unknown for now
There was a guy at my school who was a fucking legend in every contest of every subject they had
He was 2nd in the national math contest
1 in the national physics contest
1st in the chemistry national contest
1st the regional technical drawing contest
Fuck, he was a fucking beast
I really admired him
He was also a beast in chess
math and science contests and olympiads are completely different things
you can't attend to different olympiads at the same time
Teachers said the only contest he hadnt won yet was the Latin one because he hadnt signed up for it
@rigid basin he did
And always won
its not a olympiad then > @rigid basin he did
@hot cloak
its not about turkey
Dude, you can do that in Spain
He signed up for literally everything that was science-related
And always won
Dude, maybe things are different in Turkey
i need to study at least 7 hours for bio olympiads in my study days
olympiads are international
there are also national ones
You also have national olympiads
Thats where you choose who will go to the national ones
Yeah I used to be the kind of guy who had good grades but never signed up for anything
you can't be a Chemie, Mathe und Bio olympiader at the same time
That dude was
Not bio though
Here in Spain you choose between bio and technical drawing
The latter is more mathematical
So he chose that one
So did I
i trained for math olympiads for two years
then i left, because i found myself in bio
and math was more competitive
Here in Spain you can sign up for the math olympiad from ages 15-17
So you can technically go to three
there were kids who were getting trainings since 6 years
I remember they said the guy who got the first place was 15
and i was at the 9th grade > there were kids who were getting trainings since 6 years
@rigid basin
Thats why they are so good at what they do
I never signed up for it because I thought I had nothing to do there
yeap they are trained for it
I was good at math, I understood things quite intuitively, but the olympiads are something else
you probably need to start math olympiads at 3th grade
if you keep studying the same thing for 10 years
you will be eventually succeeded

Expect another loop that follows closer to the original soon.
Do Germans say Guten nach Abend sorta like Guten Nachmittag?
or do they just say Gute Nacht?
Gute Nacht - Good Night
Guten Abend - Good Afternoon
You can say Guten Nachmittag
usually if it's like
Right after noon tbh
Like I had a German class at 1:35 and the teacher used to always be like
yeah you can also just say Guten Tag. it's more commonly used
xd
Spielt jemand hier CKII?
@cerulean ingot Guten Abend is good evening.
Ah ja, forgot about that, danke
@cerulean ingot kannst du Chinesisch
aber ich dachte du kommst aus Singapur
was soll das denn?
was sprechen die Leute in Taiwan denn? 🤔
was sprechen die Menschen in Chinatown denn 🤔
There's lots of different dialects of "chinesisch" though
I know
(Bitte korrigieren Sie meine Fehler)
I've read the Wikipedia article of Chinese you knoe
Most of Singaporeans and Taiwanese speak standard mandarin, but hokkien, Cantonese, and hainanese are often spoken there too
That was mainly directed at army-
ah ok
@hot cloak Vielen Dank
Echt? Nur ein Drittel der Singapurer sprechen Chinesisch?
heftig
warte, nur 37% sprechen Englisch!?
@calm lily bist du ein groyper
@cerulean ingot Danke fur die information
If they're a Chinese Singaporean, they almost definitely speak a dialect of Chinese, but Singapore is widely multicultural, malays and Indians take up lots of the population as well
Are you brazilian or portuguese?
was sind deine Quellen

Quick question, when is it acceptable not to use the polite form in german?
wie alt bist du, Hase?
neben ihm bin ich ein einfacher Plebejer 😔
Most people here and online use the informal du

@pallid kelp jä genäu
oh whoops
@calm zealot was inspiriert du um Deutsch zu lernen?
nett
I like to travel to Germany. There is also a lot of trade between the countries so its considered the langauge that is most sought after in workers after English. I was interessted in maschine technology and knowing German would have been nice if i had continued with that.
ach so
Warum wolltest du Deutsch lernen?
Ich denke, dass es sehr schön ist
Guten Abend~
Nabend
@calm zealot wirklich?
Was meinst du?
its considered the langauge that is most sought after
Even the goverment tries to make it more attractive to study in Germany.
spoiler: it doesn't work
why though? Do people not like germany?
just don't tell me they all want to study in the usa
a lot of them do
why?
Okay, i won't tell you, since you already know 😉
since they already speak great English and there is no need for them to learn a new language
but why the usa and not the uk then for example
plus idealizing it after watching too much netfilx / many high school movies
Yeah
yeah that latter thing is probably the bigger factor
Isn't studying in the US student debt galore?
UK is very close to norway geographically, maybe the appeal to go somewhere further
Britain is 1. Demark is 2. USA is 3. Poland is 4. and Australia is 5. for Norwegians students
yup lol
i wonder if it would change anything if all the usa fiction with a school setting were more honest about the situation with student debts and school competitiveness
simen that is honestly very motivating, thank you
britain, usa, and australia are all top 5
wow you guys are lazy af btw
Not like people go to Poland because they are interessted in the place either. :/
ok but at least they don't go there just so they don't have to learn another language lol
hm
because they know of the potential influx of rich kids
honestly very motivating
yeah you have quite the advantage rather than disadvantage
Yes there are a lot of Turks in Germany
@hollow dagger Kannst du bitte "Friend of Abermals" zu deinem Namen hinzufügen. Ich muss Broseidon erobern.
Kann ich nicht . :)))
Tut mir leid. Bin tierisch wild . Hab keine Freunde.
Meine Ehefrau hat wieder nen Feminismusanfall
btw @hot cloak i would like to know how you proceed with learning vocabs at ur level.
just keeping noting new words lol
yeah definitions example sentences n shiet
I still don't succeed in remembering everything tho
hmm. i am grinding vocabs too and thought i there might be a better way out there. i guess not. thankss btw
ive been grinding so much fucking fucking fucking vocab
im close to giving up bruh
100+ new words each day
and guess how many words ive fucking seen
does that actually work?
46,000
Don't you like forget everything due to the sheer volume of content per day?
I try to note down words as I go - everytime I see a word that I don't know and feel I will forget, I add it to my Anki album
i dont learn all 100+ i just see them
but its been at least 100-200+ each day for a solid 8 months straight
I've tried that before and failed miserably haha
ive been grinding so much fucking fucking fucking vocab
@left jolt where do you find all those verbs from
:)))
oxy is simultaneously the most dedicated and esoteric learner on this server
where is his medal
How would that work? Would there be 20 medals, or one giant Pisa tower of medals, or just one medal with lots of size 4 text printed on it?
true
yes, Projekt

I am gettin on the vocab grind as well
I can learn only ab 100 per day with the amt of time i am able to study for
but i think i will study vocab and then just practice forming sentences as my other practice
That seems like a good idea.
And don't worry about learning a ton of vocab every day. You will learn some naturally by practicing a lot, especially reading, chatting with people, watching videos, etc.
@torpid moth where are you from
USofA
ngl 100 a day is... a lot
i used to do that amount and suffered from extreme burnout after about a month
if it works for you it’s good! but like
personally I’d advise against it
never knew abt lingq but damn just got it and it seems mad
oh wait it's all locked behind premium rip
@torn abyss would you mind not doing that please
im super late but imo anki for vocab is Ideal
Like I can do 50 new words a day with it and I have them memorized after a week (I've toned it down bc it helps my retention a bit)
still, 30 a day isn't too bad
I used to do 100 words per day on Anki
But I understand there are people who can't do that
I do around 30-40 per day
And again, it's only words that I put there
So it's pretty easy and effective
@pallid kelp I used to do it when I was around B1
I dont use Anki anymore
because as you said, it becomes boring once you become more advanced
the only language i've used it for was japanese and it's the one for which my vocab is worse
and it's the one for which my vocab is worse
among the ones i actively learn i mean
yes
I dont, I only like European languages
oh and except for mandarin too but that's just because i'm just starting out with it
i don't feel comfortable not knowing japanese and chinese ^^"
korean or cantonese might come next but that's far enough in the future that i don't care
I never had interest in Asian languages, I always felt that European languages were closer to my culture, specially the Romance languages
For example, Portuguese speakers are like our brothers and that makes me excited to learn their language
Portuguese speakers from Portugal won't understand Portuguese speakers from Brasil ?
sorry but, no shit they're closer to your culture 👀
europeans who learn asian languages generally do so to get closer to cultures they know are far from theirs
I'd say Brazilians have more trouble understanding Portuguese people than the other way around
I didnt phrase that correctly, what I meant is that the fact that their culture is closer to mine is what makes it interesting for me @pallid kelp
it goes so far as to call it "trouble" ?
I don't know either of the two languages and don't know how apart they are
what do you mean by "the two languages"
Portugal's Portuguese and Brasil's Portuguese
they are the same language
so how do you have trouble understanding each other
there must be differences that might lead to a misunderstanding
there are differences in grammar, ortography and pronunciation
Brazilians tend to speak with their mouths more open
whereas Portuguese people tend to keep all the vowels really closed
there are differences in grammar, ortography and pronunciation
that almost goes far enough to be called an other language imo
its not that different, I study Brazilian Portuguese and I can understand people from Portugal
oh sure. Well I already have the level of Spanish I care about (= i can understand it reasonably well when written and okayish when spoken) and I'm not too far from my objective in French (= can understand it well when written but it's tiresome; i want to become much better at listening comprehension and bring my active abilities up to snuff) so my priorities are elsewhere at the moment
wow i'm a slow typer
it was a statement about me not you
Yes but I was making one about me
see, French has communities of speakers all across the world (North America, Africa in general, and several countries in Europe), yet I do believe the language is about the same everywhere
it most certainly isn't
no grammar difference, nor orthography; eventually the accent and slangs
quebecois is crazy compared to french french
that's about slangs more than anything else
you call it slang but it's just vocab. It's an important difference no matter the name you give it
that usually happens with languages that are not pluricentric
i call it slang because it is slang, they definitely know the "French French" name of the things
some regional languages of italy have the exact same grammar as italian and yet they're impossible to decipher from italian
Is there a way to say "Thank God + subordinate clause" but without saying God?
like, thank God I dont have to work tomorrow
unless you plan to go live in Quebec, I don't see a valid reason to learn quebecois, even if it's pretty interesting tbf
yeah, me too
I'd say learning small languages is not useful
Like, why do people learn Catalan
and... I think you'd do fine learning "metropolitan French" whether it is for Quebec or France or whatever French speaking country
just learn Spanish, duh
it helps keeping the culture alive
You can thank anything.
Thank fuck. That's a good one. Unless you are opposed to swearing.
Yes, I am opposed to that
I am an atheist so I avoid the use of the word God but I also avoid swearing
You can just make something up or rephrase it.
yes but I mean isnt there a synonym for it but without the word God?
The same kind of things:
"It's a good thing that..."
"Thankfully.../Luckily..."
For example, in Spanish you can say "thank God" but there's also another way to say it
and that's the one I use
but in English I only know Thank God
thankfully
thats it
thanks
If you literally want to use "Thank X" then you need something or someone to thank. This naturally is most suitable if there is something someone worships or considers a controller of fate. Thank the stars, thank the universe, etc.
Np.
you can say thank goodness
it's a good, common and idiomatic alternative without the religious bit
When English uses a word from French, it usually pronounces it according to English sound rules. German will often sound more close to the original.
An example for this is Restaurant. Like in French, the last syllable will sound roughly like "raw". The -t will be silent. Some people will pronounce the ending similar to English "rung" instead. Of course, the R- will sound like the German r, not the English one.

one of the best beat drops aller Zeiten
im germ
I have lots of germs in my body
Spanish is one of the most spoken languages and the most useless
I mean there are no jobs in spanish speaking countries
but there are jobs in US and other places in Spanish communities where you would make yourself v useful to speak it
Those spanish communities should just speak english honestly
They do live in a English speaking country
And the job requirements that require to learn that language I hear their gonna make illegal
It's like Germany would you like it if u had to learn Arabic
@hot cloak hey would you mind changing your pfp please
I mean there are no jobs in spanish speaking countries
depends. If you want to be a drug dealer it's probably the best language you could pick
haha yes because Spanish is only spoken in Mexico and Colombia, nowhere else outside Latin America 😎
@tulip otter bruh have you ever been to hmmm Spain¿
Spanish will always sound weird to me
Nah look at their unemployment numbers
Spain has some of the worst in Europe
@hot cloak
I think Spanish is a language of poverty
.
Oh hey mint
can i say it like that? @half gulch
"oh hey (name)"?
can i say "mir geht es gut" like "mir geht's gut"?
yes
ja
ach so!
das ist das gleiche
yeah

Hello I'm Archie. I think I've been here for 1.5 years. I have only recently taken German learning seriously. I hope that I'll become fluent because I want to live in German or Austria. More about me. I'm male. I hail from Australia and I'm 19 years old.
@half gulch
i had to get a native to help edit this so don't go thinking that my german is good
I'm going to Germany to live there in September
I thought you were female
I thought you were the girl in your pfp
1.5 Jahren = ein und ein halbes Jahr
@hot cloak hahhahah. that girl is a book character!
wow she do be cute tho 😳
aye!
ja, das benutze ich immer
other half?
one and a half
ach so!
yes, thats what we were talking about
erlaubt = allowed? @pallid kelp
Ja
ach so
hallo \o
Hallo wie gehts dir?
Mir geht's gut, und dir, Blue?
Mir gehts immer ausgezeichnet
Das ist supi c:
Und so im Raum ausgezeichnet
geht's dir suuuper ausgezeichnet?
Hello
Ahhh
oder 'easily' ausgezeichnet
I understood it as like only now as in only in this moment excellent
Then i thought maybe its that gerade that means especially
like "gerade", I see :p
Like gerade er sollte das wissen
Ja, stimmt
Theres a few meanings for gerade in german haha
Danke für die Erklärung ❤️
Gern :)
@sage kayak
@hot cloak
tell me
I wanted to ask you
what languages do you speak
nur aus reiner Neugier
wenn ich fragen darf
@sage kayak
Well, sure
I speak German natively, English fluently
I'm technically a Turkish native but not good in Turkish at all
why
and I've learnt some Japanese
didnt your parents teach you
Because I haven't learned it very well
yeah, a mix of that and me not wanting to learn it
but its the language of your ancestors
Well, I don't really care about my ancestors
why
they are part of who you are
I wouldn't even notice if I were to see pictures of them
and I can't ignore my roots trace back to Latin America
It
It's a pity imo that I haven't used the easy opportunity of learning an additional language
but other than that I don't really care
😔
Bitte voted für Youjo Senki https://strawpoll.de/xs1arry
Hm
@sage kayak i get what you mean completely. im half japanese and was taught japanese, lived in japan, but never became fully fluent and dont really care that much anymore because i dont have that strong a connection to my ancestors anyway and have also given up a bit
Joseph von Eichendorff (1788-1857) Novelle: Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts (1826)
That's so weird, @sudden narwhal
Japanese is so cool O:
No, I'm joking
that's pretty much how I feel yeah :P
Although I haven't given up yet
Looks like you're talking to yourself here Bulli
Ive got a contrast in experience which i can add
So I get you're not
But like you're answering multiole questions in a row
Which makes t look weird, cuz I don't know what questions you're answering
My family pretty much has no history of immigration and both sides of my family are english monolingual
I asked mum if shed like to learn a language and she said no english is all i need
My family is pretty much purely Swedish afaik
And mine purely Turkish
A little mix of swedish speaking finn in there
And I think a hint of German mercenary
Yeah doesnt mean too much, a log of families are something like that, just thought i could add something to a conversation 😄
That's what my mother has found at least
Mercenary yeet
Yeah, sure :P
My family were convicts
Yeah, during war times I think some German mercenary were hired and settled down
I would like to learn some other languages as well
Oh, and it's great that ou're adding to the convo 👀
So thought its time to make the effort and learn one
I see c:
Yeeet i need to rethink my answers often XD
German is neat and that's enough reason for me to learn it
And you did great on that!
I mean the learning one
I saw Kühlschrank and thought thats the language i want to learn
Because it was cold + cabinet/cupboard and i thought that was great and descriptive
I see
I cant spot the origins of refrigerator as easily as Kühlschrank
Understandable
But isn't the verb "to refrigerate" obvious enough ? :o
Yeah that ones obvious
So that makes the word refrigerator easy to understand 🤔
I mean the aspects of the word its self, like i can see re-fridge-erator as the components of the word
What about 'Nashorn' and 'rhino(ceros)'
Beautiful german word
I guess you don't have a word like 'to rhinocerate' or something, Alexis :p
Rhino comes from the ancient Greek rhinos which means nose
Don't tell me that's an obvious connection! :p
Please i am a pleb mono english speaker i cant do fancy old languages but Nase + Horn is very clear
All English speakers learn greek ofc
And Faultiere i love these bois
I didn't study Greek either so your point isn't valuable 👀
I have something very weird to that Faultier thing I wanna add
What's squid in German?
Uhh ink fish
Tinten = ink? I see
it's in #archived-media
And cuttlefish
Squid fish isn't Qualle?
What's cuttlefish?
Kugelfisch
Well, that I should google I guess
In any case, I got to study the etymology of tons of words that originate from Latin and Greek. Doing that makes understanding nowadays languages easier
Yeah, that's no Kugelfisch
I just happen to know various words containing rhino and they're all linked to the nose in general
Kugelfisch = blowfish
Yeah, I thought it's a different animal
They make themselves a "bullet"(ball)
Kugelschreiber isnt reeally bullet writer
A small ball is a kugel, no?
Like metal, glass or wooden
however, German likes to take new German words by compunding old (not meaning ancient) German words together
Kugel, kula, close enough
Yeah, an Swedes take their words from old low German and add their own touch to it
volcano is basically fire mountain
Makes sense
Japanese is a lot of logic
Learn the kanji and you can make up the word by yourself
The readings can just be problematic
How far are you into learning Japanese ?
So many verbs with er-, be-, an- etc etc without it making any sense
Hope you're doing well with Japanese
So you can read 地下鉄, for instance ?
I would have guessed gems now
I thought element
音楽 is sound + pleasure and that makes music
What's moaning then?
Don't know
If I'm guessing the right suggestion of my dictionary
No example sentences for that
Is that even a verb- yeah :p
What words is it made up from?
Maybe
🤔
する = suru = to make
Are Japanese books shorter on average?
呻 seems to be the kanji itself for groan / moan
lots of stuff verbs you can make out of noun + suru
吟 is apparently linked to singing
Well, I should go. It's 2 AM
Nice seeing that you're active on discord again Bulli
I'm not sure they would use 呻吟する when having 呻く already
Bye 👋
Gn
Tschüss
More people should get into studying etymology
It's not really rare to have more than one word for the same thing
also with suru and without suru
呻吟する hasn't shown up in jissho, so it is probably not used
I could be wrong
And I probably am wrong
But that's my pov
Naww, if it doesn't show up, I guess it's not a thing
See I thought I could be wrong and after doing more researches it seems to be referred to as a suru verb
:P
I would like to cite an English text, but I am writing a German text and have to leave a footer with information about the citation, which would look like this (according to the format given to me by my teacher)
Last name, first name (year of publication): Title of the article - subtitle if necessary, URL: Link to the post (retrieval date: date of retrieval).
Could some of you tell me where and how I should write that I have translated this text?
The citation format looks correct to me, why do you need to remark the translation?
Hi
@limpid oasis, the words "ein anderer weg" do u needn't in ur sentences
oh, right. I wanted to say "another way"
@zealous girder
@glacial pier may I know what this is about?
scroll upwards
Oh!
England/US?
Irland
youve got a original irish acent?
the funny one?
like the ppl. in the movie snatch? 😄
please say No in irish
Schade .....
nem @gritty granite
Isn't it Nu?

@lone mist @spiral stratus @shy anchor I can cut a log in half just by looking at it. I'm serious. I saw it with my own two eyes
ughhhh
oh my god
Lol
@glacial pier reacting to your ping just now, somehow it had not appeared; yes, I ended up finding that it was in fact a suru-verb 👍
Nice @nocturne frost
@shy anchor Bro 😍
Nichts 😍
wdym?
Limonade
@gilded egret Regarding your earlier post in #writing, please don't spam and troll.
guten morgen
guten morgen
@hot cloak @hot cloak you can use this chat to talk to each other, #introductions is only meant for.. well introductions
Limo bedeutet Limousine
@grim stag denn introduces a main clause, meanwhile weil introduces a subordinative clause
@hot cloak Linguee ist nicht immer zuverlässig...
@gleaming scroll na und
einfach so

@gleaming scroll Soda = Limonade = Limo = Brause. It’s just a synonym
But Limo is also the short form of Limousine : )
Wdym?
can you help me with something @glacial pier

to vanish/disappear into nothingness
ohh ok
"Nachdem er mich gestern abgeschleppt hat, ist er heute Morgen im Nichts verschwunden. Ohne eine Nummer oder so dazulassen. Was ein Arschloch."
oh nice
Eigentlich bedeutet abschleppen "to tow [a car]"
"na, hast du gestern wieder eine abgeschleppt?"
thank you for teaching me Umgangsprache 😳
Umgangssprache ist important
if you have tried
wdym
Have you tried to do the work first
well i mean yea i just dont really know what to do

It says to write the correct forms in dativ
sigh
@wind sky Take the example. You are suposed to write the correct posseive form in dative based on the gender of the noun
it is your friend and fruendin is a female noun
Deiner Fruendin
