One of my favourite books as a teenager was this one called Ferren and the Angel. It's part of a trilogy about a future where societally de-evolved humans are stuck in a war between angels in Heaven and weird creepy not-human things on Earth. This angel crashes on Earth and this kid, Ferren, meets her and they find out some freaky stuff about the world.

Well, to be fair, fantasy/romance attracts a lot of below average writers and concepts.

Just a side-effect of the nature of the genres, I suppose.

I consider them entry-level genres for writers (perhaps a bit unfairly), so despite the number of decent and good works in the genre, there's a lot of low level stuff

some genres are objectively harder to find an audience for and to write about, to be fair.

Crime has the same thing but... crime isn't as badly affected by tropey content. It can actually really benefit from it.

to write historical fiction or sci-fi there's usually a lot, a sometimes overwhelming, amount of research to be done beforehand, so it's unsurprising that those authors that do manage it end up claming a higher "position"

if a genre's hook is on eliciting a certain kind of response or range of emotions in the reader, then that genre is generally hard to write

comedy is one of the hardest things to do, after all. And same states for horror, if one means the well-crafted kind

most horror videogames rely on cheap mechanisms like jump-scares or obfuscation. Very few of them can really make you fear stuff ina genuine way

I must admit it's not an easy author to read long term. Not that it's hard to get what he means but if I read it continuously it gets raather tiresome and depressing. If I were to recommend it to anyone, I'd also say that they should read something else inbetween his works
