Well Bismarck founded his foreign politics on a concept called "Machtpolitik", basically "Nobody is going to disagree with you if there's nobody to disagree in the first place." - In order to achieve this kind of mindset, he needed Prussia or the North German Confederation (NGC for short) to be very reactionary.
They needed a rival
They formerly established their dominance (see: sphere of influence) over what would later become the German Empire when they defeated Austria in 1855
So they needed a new rival
People still disliked France because of this whole Napoleon-thingie. So Bismarck went and secretly formed alliance with the nations of Bavaria, Württemberg, Baden & Hesse-Darmstadt which would later be known as the "Schutz- und Trutzbündnisse", which pretty much said that if somebody were to attack one of the countries, then the other ones would aid them in a war.
So the next thing Bismarck needed was a war, in order to fire up the engine of nationalism in the southern German states he was now allied with.
Keep in mind, nationalism has been huuuuge at that point already, ever since Napoleon was defeated
The political situation in Spain at that time was a little complicated to say the least, and the family of Hohenzollern had the possibility of getting one of their own to sit on the spanish throne.
France obviously didn't want that, since they risked being sandwiched by the NCF and a pro german Spain. So they officially asked the Hohenzollerns to renounce any claim to the Spanish throne

I don't think it's a matter of things to gain. Many things in post-world war politics go on by inertia
and it's hard to change even things that everyone wants to change
the whole world feels this, except america whose borders were pretty much untouched by the wars despite their major involvement

Well the rest of the Yugoslav countries don't really like Serbia because of their expansionist politics and the "great Serbia" project, so just giving them 48% of our territory isn't a thing anyone is particularly thrilled about.
