What's the difference between danken and sich bedanken?

As far as I know, there are no differences in the meaning, but there are differences in the grammatical usage and slight nuances in the when to use which of those words. "danken" is also less often used i think.
"sich bedanken" is reflexive and intransitive.
"danken" is not reflexive and transitive.
Example sentences in the perfekt tense to show the differences:
"Ich habe mich bei ihm bedankt" The object needs the verb "bei" because it's an accusative object of the verb, that is not an direct object of the verb.
"Ich habe ihm gedankt"
A somewhat actually used phrase:
"Ich danke dir"" - "Thank you, (I appreciate it)"
If you want to use that kind of word, I would recommend using "sich bedanken", because "danken" might sound odd in some situations.
