Fell off the planet around early November, and it looks like there have been two patches since then. Was able to get the Patch 57 zip file from the link at the top of the forum, extracted and copied it over to my EQ folder, but it's still hollering for a different version of SPELLS_US.TXT - Have I borked myself by not getting the previous patch first? And if it's still possible to get and install that one, where can I find, since the forum frontpage just gets me the most recent?

The frontpage one is all you need no matter how many patches you missed. Try extracting to desktop first then dragging to folder.
If everquest is in program files it can cause write permission issues consider moving the folder to somewhere like my documents

- Replace primary HD with bigger SSD
- Copy EQ from secondary HD to primary HD and run from there so things load faster
- Patch old copy on secondary HD
- Run copy on primary HD and wonder why it doesn't go
