well my main problem was trying to figure out how to download them on the app instead of the other mod manager

I think the problem was that I had both

What was the other mod manager you were using?
When you open the Nexus Mods app, it should set itself as the default for managing collections. However, if you launch another mod manager afterwards, it might take back the default status. Reopening the Nexus Mods app will restore it as the default for collections
