Allow us to despawn our mercenary without losing gear or paying their fee again. There are situations that just 1-shot mercenaries with no hope of them surviving and I know they will die, so I don't want to bring them, however, dismissing them preemptively still just costs me gold. Additionally, sometimes it's very hard to test stuff on training dummies with the merc there.

Obviously I would also like it if things didn't guarantee kill mercs, such as the Act 5 boss dropping balls of doom on his head and then just watching him swim in them till he dies.

I think it would be easier, if you add buttons to give commands.
For example:

Press the G to tell the mercenary to move to where the mouse is pointing or if you are aiming at an enemy you can give him the order to go fight against that enemy.

Another way is that you can configure "states" or the way you want him to perform, such as passive/offensive/defensive.

True, but still wouldn't solve the dummy testing issue. This feature existed in HS1, but was removed with HS2 for some reason.

Why not? you give the order to the mercenary to stay away from the dummies so that you can do the tests you need.
