I made a shader that turns unshaded sprites into fancy lit scenes :) It's reasonably resource efficient too!

well sorta. there's also a depth map that represents how far each pixel is from the camera

so there's actually two versions of every sprite, there's one that's just flat coloring, and then a black and white depth map of the sprite

there's also a material map but thats not rlly being used on this example. the material map can just be used to represent reflectiveness and other material attributes
