#(BUG) Receiving a Wii Speak voicemail turns the deflicker filter off any time mail is loaded

I’m having this extremely odd and specific bug where the deflicker filter turns off in the Wii menu, but only specifically when any special (yellow/orange or otherwise) mail is rendered/comes into view when viewing mail (not when the message board loads in general, only when viewing mail that isn't a playtime log).

I made a forum post about this (https://forum.wiilink.ca/t/bug-support-deflicker-filter-turns-off-the-moment-any-non-playtime-mail-is-loaded-rendered/1776) but since then I've tracked the cause of the issue down to receiving Wii Speak mail specifically ('This message was created by your Wii friend using the Wii Speak Channel.') but the filter turns off when viewing ANY special mail from that point on, not just viewing Wii Speak mail. Receiving one causes something to happen where it being present on the message board at all (even after deleting it!!!) causes all mail to turn off the deflicker filter when rendered at all.

It stays off for that session and turns back on when the wii menu is reloaded and when a channel/game is loaded.
This results in a breif window where the system menu boots and everything is fine but the deflicker filter turns off the moment the message board messages load if you received any special mail that day (because it gets immediately rendered behind the channels).

To clarify, I am NOT interested in debating wether or not deflicker looks better and I will NOT discuss it. I am just looking for a solution to this issue - though for context, I want the deflicker filter ON while in the Wii menu. It turning off from Wii Speak mail specifically does not seem intentional at all.

This bug doesn’t happen at all if the Wii is booted into Recovery Mode (which disables the message board). It also does not happen if it’s in an interlaced video mode (576i or 480i), even when checking the mail. I verified this by using priiloader’s system menu hacks.

This could be related to the priiloader hack '[Remove Deflicker]' but to my knowledge priiloader hacks are completely temporary patches that should have no permanent effects.

Console info:
Had this happen on two systems. Both systems are PAL region RVL-001(EUR), one is black and the other one is white
Bug started happening on the black one but it occurs on the white one, both after importing a backup from the black one and receiving wii speak mail from a friend after system formatting + patching wii mail again
All homebrew and cIOS are up-to-date

Fixes I've tried (all have failed):

  • Deleting Wii Speak mail using the Wii message board's delete function
  • Reinstalled the System Menu (4.3E v514) by downloading via ModMii and intalling using YAWM ModMii Edition
  • Backed up and imported the message board to an entirely different console using cdbackup
  • Making a priiloader patch to force the deflicker filter on while in the Wii menu (though this might still be possible since they made a hack that turns it off, surely the opposite can be done)

It's a minor thing, but as someone who likes the smooth look of the deflicker filter, this has been driving me absolutely crazy the past week. I don't expect an instant fix, but if this can be looked into further or if I can get really any kind of closure at all, that would be massively appreciated. Thank you!

i have saved settings and no i am not using a crt but i want deflicker on anyway

i think the issue is that the wii speak channel was one of the most recent channels and during an era where crts were being phases out

#

and maybe nintendo thought, “we should remove deflicker for this channel, we dont think anybody is using a crt nowadays” when wii speak channel was released

#

i have a theory, theres an earlier version of the wii speak channel, since the most common varient of it is v2.0, and i think theres a predecessor that had the deflicker on, but thats just my theory

i dont mean the channel itself i mean the wii message board
idc if the channel itself has deflicker i care that it's affecting the wii menu when it really shouldnt

….yeah im pretty sure if youre not using a crt deflicker has to be off

#

it looks better too
-# but this isnt the place to argue about whether deflicker looks good on or off

Still looking for developer input on this

Anything? Even a simple 'no' would bring some closure

#

There ain't no way I'm the only person to ever have this issue

#

I also think it's related to the miis loading in the message board because it happens when loading the address book aswell
