Basically, every game I try on my Wii (4.3E), on clOS 249 it doesn't load at all, and on cIOS 250 it loads, usually I get to the gameplay just fine, but after several seconds to a couple of minutes I get black screen and my Wii freezes I use Verbatim USB HDD to load games, it's formatted as FAT32. Tries reinstalling clOS and using different versions from different developers - same thing happens. USB Loader GX is the latest version

To help troubleshoot your issue please run Syscheck and test all IOS on your Wii by following this guide:
https://wii.guide/syscheck
When it's done it will generate and display a syscheck.csv file.
Power down the Wii and insert the SD or USB into a PC. Drag and drop the syscheck.csv file from the root of your SD or USB into chat.
You can also upload the report and link the URL to chat or take photos of the entire report if you don’t have a USB or a SD reader on your PC
outdated cios
IOS249[56] (rev 21008, Info: d2x-v8final): Trucha Bug, NAND Access, USB 2.0
IOS250[57] (rev 21008, Info: d2x-v8final): Trucha Bug, NAND Access, USB 2.0
...how?
Those are cIOS from n-wii.ru, I tried them to try to fix the HDD, but it didn't help
Those from wii.guide produced the same effect
What?
Yeah
I recommend you use the Windows program, ModMii. It has many Wii modding tools or "activities" built in.
Do a Syscheck by following this Guide https://wii.guide/syscheck
Download and install ModMii to your windows PC
https://modmii.github.io/
Launch Modmii Classic (not ModMii Skin)
Type I Agree and press enter
Type SU and press enter to select the Syscheck Updater Activity.
Provide it the syscheck.csv file you just made by dragging the syscheck.csv file from the root of your SD and dropping it into the ModMii window.
It might ask you if you want to remove\overwrite RiiConnect24 in IOS 31. You can say no.
It'll list many wad files that it will download, select Y = Yes, Generate Guide and Begin Downloading
Follow the generated guide closely to update your mod files.
@dry solstice
He's that guy
I'll try, and if it didn't help I'll tell
I did that, basically I get the same results, same black screen before the cutscene in Super Mario Galaxy for example
If needed, that's the HDD I'm using, tried different cables - doesn't work
Tried ModMii, installed WADs it gave me as the solution, didn't help
Make a new syscheck
Is your hdd FAT32 with the partition style MBR and a 32kb cluster size.
Also can you send a screenshot of how your games look on the hdd
HDD is FAT32 with MBR, cluster size is unknown (KDE Partition Manager didn't let me choose)
Are you on windows?
Okay, try this first
Here is what the folder structure should look like for game loading:
💾SD/USB:
┣ 📂wbfs
┃ ┣ 📂GameName [gameID]
┃ ┃ ┗ 📜gameid.wbfs
┃ ┗ 📂GameName [gameID] --This example is for split wbfs files, if you are on ntfs or your game is smaller than 4gb, ignore it
┃ ┣ 📜gameid.wbfs
┃ ┗ 📜gameid.wbf1
┗ 📂games
┣ 📂GameName [gameID]
┃ ┗ 📜game.iso --note: this is LITERALLY game.iso, not the name of the game, or the game id, just game
┗ 📂GameName [gameID] --This example is for multi disc games
┣ 📜game.iso
┗ 📜disc2.iso
Note: the WBFS folder is for WII GAMES ONLY and the Games folder is for GAMECUBE GAMES ONLY
get the game IDs here: https://www.gametdb.com/
For Wii games you can just use any of the programs found on this page as an easier alternative to manually creating the folder structure: https://wii.guide/wiibackupmanager
Redid the file structure, basically the same thing. Can it be that this particular HDD is not compatible with the Wii or it isn't getting enough power from it?
Basically didn't help
So basically I've reformatted the drive with 32K sector size, will test it now
Didn't help
Is the HDD in port 0 (closest to the edge)
It is
Then it's most likely a compatibility issue
IF YOU WANT
If you're operating on a tight budget with an intention to purchase an external HDD or an SD Card for use with your Wii, then within this specific context, the following options may be considered. FAT32 file formatting is essential to use these devices with your Wii.
If you are looking for reasonably-priced HDD options that operate optimally with the Wii console, we would recommend exploring the links below:

While another recommended solution utilizes an SD card with greater storage allocation capacity which can store both games and open source applications as well - check it out here: https://a.co/d/gdDayD9
Additionally, there exists another possibility where users could take advantage of using an internal HDD supported by SATA-to-USB technology - providing more varied connectivity options between devices; it is suggested to investigate the details further at this source link: https://a.co/d/4myJBmZ
Did you delete the old cios slots already?
which ones?
202,222,223,224,236
I didn't touch them
Yeah they gotta go
Get Wii mod lite https://wii.guide/wiimodlite Extract it and put it in your apps folder on the SD, launch it on the Wii, select iOS, delete slots 202,222,223,224,236
Ultimately didn't help, still the same issue
Make sure your Drive is plugged into Port 0 like in this image https://i.imgur.com/zNrAp5o.png
It is
Basically the issue - games start up, but after some time (like when I select a game mode or run to the first cut scene) it just shows black screen, Wii doesn't react to anything or only allows to open HOME menu, the HDD is spinning
Double check the partition style is MBR: https://www.howtogeek.com/245610/how-to-check-if-a-disk-uses-gpt-or-mbr-and-how-to-convert-between-the-two/
it is
Basically the issue - games start up, but after some time (like when I select a game mode or run to the first cut scene) it just shows black screen, Wii doesn't react to anything or only allows to open HOME menu, the HDD is spinning. If it wasn't formatted correctly, the loader wouldn't even see it
What version of usbloader GX are you on
3.0 1281
If I set it to 249, the games don't load at all, but they behave like I described on 250, and it happens to every game I tested
Can you send another syscheck
Have you used modmii before?
Yes
It should have given you more iOS than that
It gave me 20 IOS and some stubs
Yeah install all of them
That's what I did (only the 20 ones, not stubs)
Install the stubs
Didn't help
new syscheck
It looks the same
But I installed the stubs it gave me
Basically rn the only thing modmii gives me are the same stubs (3, 4, 10, 16, 51) and nothing else
Alright then
I believe this is the drive incompatibility
It could be, but if the drive reads I doubt it
The drive works fine on my PC, but it had some issues when I used it as SMB drive on my router (it would disconnect randomly)
Does it have multiple partitions?
No
Weird
I guess my drive's USB port might be the issue, but I don't have another drive to test
If the drive reads, unlikely
It reads, but it can randomly disconnect and reconnect back
Then actually it could be a power issue
Does your drive have any kind of sleep mode
Well, I don't know
It also might not get enough power from the Wii, which is usually rare
The Wii can power most drives
I've found a relatively cheap (2000 rub.) 320 GB drive, it is said that it's compatible with PS4 and XOne, I think it might work for Wii too
Basically, I just tried to run the game from an SD card, and guess what, it's working perfectly. This is 100% a drive compatibility error
That’s quite a shame.
I’m guessing it might be a power related issue.
Yeah, it may be
Basically, it turns out that this drive is just incompatible with the Wii
