#Wii Hack : SD Card AND/OR USB storage?

Hello,
I followed the Wii Guide (using the SD card LetterBomb hack) and at the "Homebrew Channel and BootMii Installation" step and several other, they are talking about using an "SD card or USB". Can I use both an SD card and USB at the same time for my apps or should I put them all on one or the other? I want to use USB to store my games. Is there a setting or something to change to switch to the other storage type for the apps or should I just follow the guide again but using USB?
