I recently decided to dust off my old Wii and homebrew it for some fun
It’s on version 4.2, and I can’t update the firmware to 4.3 because I can’t connect the Wii to my campuses Wi-Fi
I tried using an SD card and modmii to homebrew it, however everytime after I opened the SD card menu and hit yes to run the file, I’d just be left with a black screen and my Wiimote wouldn’t connect anymore
Idk if it’s the SD card I’m using (64gb Sandisk with a 8gb partition formatted to FAT32 but I’m kinda lost right now on what to do
#What’s my best method of homebrewing my Wii if I can’t update the firmware to 4.3

Follow this guide to update your homebrewed Wii to 4.3 https://wii.guide/update.html
use your phone to create a hotspot and then update
Hotspot doesn’t really work
Tried this, my data connection on campus is spotty and wasn’t able to update
Is the Wii already Homebrewed?
Nope
Oh
The Wii needs a 2.4ghz signal with Network 802.11b enabled, and the security type set to at best WPA2-PSK (AES). If your isp will not let you change these settings, you have a few options:
You can use a LAN adapter. It must have the ASIX AX88772 Chipset or say “compatible with Wii”. Here’s a recommended LAN adapter by uGreen https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DRKYKMM/
Alternatively, you can buy router and just use the isp you already have, like a mesh network. Here’s a cheap router that should work for the Wii https://www.walmart.com/ip/Netis-WF2412-Wireless-router-4-port-switch-802-11b-g-n-2-4-GHz/37406393
use a smaller sd card, maybe there is some compatibility issue
See I was thinking that may be a possibility
64 sdhc is way beyond what was around back then
Letterbomb only works on 4.3
what version do you have?
wasnt there bannerbomb or something?
@jagged palm
thats for 4.2 i guess
4.2
I tried bannerbomb and all I get is black screen
Technically you don’t need 4.3
eh nothing different really
If I grab a 16gb sdhc card, you think I’ll have a better chance at the bannerbomb working?
i use 16gb sdhc, i wouldnt go over 32
Noted
but i never used bannerbomb, so all i know, it exists
As much as I would love to Ethernet my wii, more or less tryna move quicker with this, and unfortunately my Walmart doesn’t have a usb to Ethernet adapter
you also need a wii dedicated one
i got one lately on ebay but seems like they become rare, at least if you wanna buy the nintendo branded one, got mine for collectors reason
@jagged palm just use ModMii to mod and update your Wii to 4.3.
Download and install ModMii to a Windows computer
https://modmii.github.io/
Make sure your Wii's SD doesn't have any WAD files on it's SD in a folder called WAD. If you don't have the folder, don't worry about it.
Launch Modmii Classic (not ModMii Skin)
Read the agreement and type I Agree and press enter.
Type W for ModMii Wizard + Guide (Start Here to Mod Your Wii!)
Type Y for Yes when it asks "Is this your first time softmodding your Wii?" Yes even if it's been modded before.
Answer the questions then read and follow the generated guide's instructions for modding and updating your Wii.
Modmii wasn’t working for me
Why
Not 100% sure
May possibly be my SD card
What's the issue
So it’d load all the files onto the card
I’d insert the card into the Wii
Open the SD card menu, it’d ask if I want to open the main file, I’d hit yes, then I’d just get a black screen indefinitely
No response from the Wiimote or anything
well, maybe bringing the wii to a place with better wifi is the easiest solution
the wii understands wpa2, should be sufficient
only problem can be how you connect your video, if you use a hdmi adapter. hdmi is also everywhere. but if use component or composite would be diffcult to bring a tv with you
Yeah
I’m gonna try the different SD card idea first because compatibility
And if that doesn’t help.. time to go beg people if I can use their wifi lol
i just mean before its getting overly complicated here or you even buy additional stuff
Good point
im sure nobody cares abourt a macbook in a starbucks anymore, but maybe a wii does the trick..
I can’t really think of many places I can go tho, don’t really got friends that live off campus, and I don’t think GameStop is gonna be ok with me trying to update my Wii in the middle of their store
What files?
why not? if the dude behind the counter is cool
Let me just bring a giant tv, my Wii, sensor bar and everything into Starbucks
Lol
The files inside the COPY_TO_SD folder?
Yes
Some of the ppl at my local GameStop are buzzkills
what i ment was, if you use a wii2hdmi adapter, the console itself is tiny and you can use any monitor or tv that has hdmi
Good point
SD menu?
Yeah, the SD card icon in the bottom left of the main menu
Ah right bannerbomb
Yea, kinda my only option right now
