@remote lynx Well, after a thousand hours of practice, you may still feel shit, but compare your recent work with work from before or half that thousand and you will notice significant improvements. The trick is ofcourse that you should practice and not just go do random art if you want to see improvements after just a few dozen of hours. I have been practicing recently and I can tell I have improved drawing faces quite a lot

A texture is the information saved as a flat image based on an objects UV layout.
a material is the code/logic/shading information we setup in the engine. This reads the textures and will display the information correctly on a 3D model.
We plug our textures into our materials. That's how the engine knows what information to put where
A Physical material, as panzer was describing. Is essentialy a tagging system that we use in UE4. On a shader/object, we can say that this has the physical material of 'dirt' so that when a player interacts with that dirt in the world it will play the appropriate footsteps, sfx,particles.

Or try using word-of-the-day calendars, and write a story using the word, or (more challenging) try using the word as often as possible in a logical sense. Knowing how to acquire knowledge/skill is just as important than the stuff itself

@rocky tiger If you want to deanimify your drawings, try making the nose more accented and the eyes more to proportion (slightly less high and actually closing near the ends instead of leaving them open

Because many starting drawers learn the "how to easily draw anime" tricks, which will bite them back in the ass later when studying stuff like anatomy and structure; things key to good drawing in any style and which are pretty much required to advance in the field (like, all the big anime artists didnt draw anime full time)
One should learn to draw realistic, then learn to simplify; the other way around is just real hard to do

Its a bit hard to get a good comparison, only thing I can come up with is for drumming: when people grab the sticks, they generally stick out their thumb along the stick. That is the first thing you will have to unlearn, as that could damage your thumb real bad long term; you need to grab them like a 3yo grabs a crayon. @glad wharf

@deft cliff its because most of us arent even art students. It isnt fair to ask that people who only draw for fun in their free time draw extremely technical drawings. Cartoons are easy to draw and convey a point without needing too much skill or practice that a lot of people dont have. I donโt understand why you have a problem with that, at least we are using our imaginations.

Cartoons have always been a thing, or rather the norm (albeit under a different name, think about medival drawings, things scribbled on walls, strips/caractures in newspapers from readers, etc.). Its actual under recent few decades you see the average person draw more realisticly under influence of mass media and easy access study material. That being said, it is interestting that they often try to follow the manga/anime style; this could be argumented due to the huge volume of anime vs traditional drawn western media (like, everything is animated nowadays). That the style is not your preference is completely fair, but to call it weird or copy is just plain uneducated, as everything in art is a copy of something. @glad sphinx

Because that are like 10~20, you tell them apart more by skill than style. I am talking about what you could find on sites like deviant art where I pull at random two drawings each of 10 random (non-art-academy) anime artists and ask you to match the drawings. That would be harder than for an american style and even more for european style artists. These use less tricks you can read in the "how to draw manga" books but more tricks of their own.

I definitely think anime has a charm and I grew up with lots of anime (chin-chen, pokemon, hamtaro, to name a few), but those are done by artists who studied that shit for years on end. To compare that with the "general level" is a rude thing, but there are in fact major differences in quality. And its that difference that is so notable for anime, as there are a huge amount of those "uneducated" (sorry, lack of better word) artists which make it a pain to see. Mirror that to new-western comic artists like you can find on instagram; every artists has such an unique style there that when there is a single contextless frame is used in a meme, deepfried, cut up, and edited in all kinds of ways, and you can still recognise the artist. That is what I call own style.

@autumn leaf I read a report on a Tiger tank taking 252 hits from all sorts of Soviet calibers and still making it back to HQ under it's own engine power, you got any story about a Soviet scrap on tracks being able to do that? I don't think so, German engineering is German engineering, you could practically put your hand through the armor welds on most Soviet tanks.

If you want to actually use them, I advise you not to buy a soviet helmet, or try like a odel from 90s onwards (goes for pretty much any helmet tho, because a normal workmen helmet offers similar protection)
