A brief description: It is usually easy to forget, between national propaganda and delusions of heroism, how war sometimes actually fractures communities, families or friends. I tried to capture the feeling of loss of someone dear on the field of battle, and how heroism and gallantry could turn into guilt and shame.

I am right handed too, but I don't think it's actually true, the drawing was made as you've seen first time and my brother who is left handed said something was wrong with it, so I just flipped it (I've done some other minor adjustments too) and he said it looks better now.

@barren flicker Well, people have an order in which they view things; you learn that at a young age when learning how to read. For westerners, we often prefer things flipped in contrast to peeps who learned arabic from an early age. There are some other factors too (like eye preference, similar like arm and leg preference), but there is a reason why flipping images is used to correct drawings, as you will view things in a different light

the most astonishing thing is when you correct lighting or shading in a drawing and when you flip it, you immediately realise it is not looking good anymore

and on a computer, I try to slip it constantly as I do like every detail, when I feel like it, that can be every minute, every 5 minutes, every 10 minutes, whenever I feel like doing it.

@barren flicker you can take a picture and flip it for errors. But like I can see those errors quite easily on paper. I generally dont have much issue with "flipping = uncomfortable" myself, as I have the habit of working backwards thru my notebooks (notes from lectures in the front, practice in the back, same goes for my dummies); but on the computer, I simply make more errors because of indirect drawing I suppose

I find it interesting because at some point in my life, I had to cover my right eye for a few months to heal it after a kendo accident and because of that I now view stuff with my eyes separately (I focus with my left eye, covering the other one and vice-versa) and I simply try to see if the details match both my 'visions', yet it is a good exercise to see it with your 'right side of the brain and left side as well'

So me and my clan did a dday on Godcroft to spread the front once we landed we discovered another landing that happened but didn't do anything so we got to work after we landed. We took 2the first fort at Axehead then a few hours later we took all the forts around the lake. We didn't take heavy losses. The 2nd wave of landing craft came in with supplies. It was only 5 ppl that did the landing . After a day fighting we got another fort but we lost the 4 forts around the lake but kept one the southern part of the region.

I've started on a sort of "war letter" series from my own personal experiences in foxhole

guess I should share the first one, lest they be lost on my harddrive to the sands of time...

    Today, I got my first taste of war; over all, it was hell, but apparently
hell isn't all that bad. It started out rather slow, an officer greeted me out
the gate, he said "Oi, you there! You're new here aren't ya? Go run 'round
south, there'll be a training officer taking you recruits for a spin around the
course!" At least, that's about how I remember it. The training wasn't much, but
it probably saved my life several times and made this whole war thing a little
less hell-ish.
    One of the training officers also took me to the front-lines, it was a bit
of a journey, but it was rather enjoyable. We started out at Viper pit, took a 
oil tanker, and headed south to the Abandoned Ward, the old capital, in
Deadlands. I helped repel an attack across a small bridge and flanked the enemy
in a counter-assult. I died a few times, but if that mattered, I wouldn't be
writing to you, now would I? Like I said, war is hell, but apparently hell isn't
all that bad.
    Well, thats about all I've got for you as of yet; I'll have more either next
week or next month, depending on how much I partake.

*Our engineers had finally created a beast that could finally change the tide of the war...
A "Battle Tank" they called it. It was more like a dreadnought. I remember, it was several weeks after the Meseans had fielded their first monsters onto the field... Our lines were crumbling all across the continent. We were being pushed back into the frozen reaches of the North. Upon finally receiving these beasts in our own ranks, the 13th Mechanized Armor made effective use of these beasts. The sheer power of these tanks was absolutely chilling. The firepower these behemoths could unleash was nothing like we could have imagined a single tank could.

I lost count of the days, much like I lost count of the Colonial Hatchet Tanks we had laid waste to in our new pride and joy. High Command had even bestowed several medals unto my crew and I. We were so proud. We thought we were invincible.

I peeked out of my hatch and spotted a steel monster, like our own, that had just crossed into the open.
"Enemy Battle Tank sighted! Gunner, az 239, distance: 50m!" I shouted.
"On target!"
"Fire!"
Our beast roared it's booming roar. The shell glanced off the opposing monster's armor. "Load! Quickly!" I shouted as the loader sent another shell into the cannon breach. "Loaded!"
"Aim for the driver's hatch! Send them to oblivion!" I cried. "Fire!"
Our shell had penetrated the Colonial beast... And it was rendered to nothing more than a flaming hulk of steel. That had marked the fifth enemy battle tank we had knocked out. By this time, my crew and I had grown numb to the sight of death. This war had taken it's toll on many of us. We had been pushed back beyond our previously held lands, a traitorous faction launched a destructive weapon upon one of our own cities... This war... Was like any other.

I raised my commanders hatch as we travelled down a lone road... It was only us. Our infantry escort had not survived the last encursion, but we still pressed on instead of awaiting reinforcements. I spotted enemy infantry ahead on the road.
"Loader, HE rounds. Radio, load the MG." I ordered my crew as they prepared.
It was almost pathetic. They couldn't even scratch us! Our guns ripped through the Colonial dogs like they were nothing... You could hear the devil laughing in the sound of our machine gun. Overcome with... Was it greed? Bloodthirst? I do not know... But I ordered my crew to pursue the retreating infantry.
I remember beaming proudly atop the commander's cupola as we shattered their line... But something was... Off.
I looked off to my left, and what I saw still shakes me to my core. At least fifty men, all colonials breaking from the treeline and coming straight at us. They had no weapons, but AT grenades in their hands. To my horror, I shouted to my driver to for a hard reverse and for our gunners to open fire.

I still remember the screams of my crew as the first grenades stuck to our tank.

Righto friends, I’m posting my story. Bear with me as I’m copying it from another discord server, and arranging it here; without further ado, enjoy:

Written from the POV of a Colonial soldier reading a diary detailing some of the experiences of Noel, a fifteen year old girl who lives near Mara.

You find a diary amid the discarded debris of the small town's plaza, perhaps someone had lost it amid the panic, opening it, you flip to a random entry:

Dear Diary,

Father is on edge. He has tried to hide it, but I know him well enough to understand he is worried about something. He has begun coughing again, much more forcefully this time, like he does when he gets really angry, and he has begun hiding the fishing hauls and preserving them in the cellar, telling the others that he simply haven't caught anything of worth, but we have enough to feed a small army, I think. I still do not know why he has done this, but I'm worried something is coming.

Father has repeatedly shown me the hiding spot in the cellar, every day he asks me if I remember it, remember how to get in and how to ration food. I answer the same thing every time, that yes, I remember, but I don't understand why he keeps asking. I know if mother were here he'd be calm, he always was when she was around....I guess I was too.

Anyways, I saw Josef again, I know I already talked about him, and you probably don't want to hear about him again, but I just can't help it. He's been up north training, but he came back home to visit his parents before he heads to the Front. He's leaving tomorrow, and I saw him while I was helping Father bring in what little of the haul he would allow. He has changed since he left, matured. He used to be the joke of the village, but now he's serious and stern, and he wears his uniform proudly. When Father saw him he looked sad, and asked Josef if his unit was supplied with gas masks. Josef had looked confused, but had said that yes, they were, and he mentioned that they had new filters as well. Father had mumbled something before another coughing fit wracked him, I still don't know what he said.

Dear Diary,

Josef left for the Front, he says the war should be over soon, that the Front never really changes and that we shouldn't be worried, but Father scoffed at him. Josef sounded like he was reciting propaganda to me, and Father seemed to think so as well. His parents seem proud of him though. Before he left, he gave to me a small white pendant in the shape of a flower. He says it's an Edelweiss, that it grows up in the mountains to the North, and that it's supposed to signify the mark of a true soldier.

Father scoffed at that, too.

You skip ahead several pages, passing by entire weeks as though they were not even there.

Dear Diary,

Father has stayed up later and later with his rifle ever since Josef left, and he looks more and more tense. His coughing has gotten worse, and I fear he may be gravely sick. I have heard thunder almost nightly for three weeks now, except it hasn't rained nor been stormy for a month. Father seems most worried about this.

The village sees a lot of soldiers coming through now, and I've managed to make some money selling seashell necklaces and bracelets. Most of the soldiers seem excited, they are young and wide eyed, and they pass by in trucks and cars and motorcycles or on foot marching in formation, their blue coats and fresh and clean and their buttons gleaming in the sunlight.

Maybe, if the soldiers keep coming into the village I will get to see a tank!

Dear Diary,

The thunder has gotten closer and closer, and Mara has begun to see people leaving, fleeing North. I thought Father would have made us go as well but he hasn't made any indication he intends to leave, at least not yet.

His coughing has gotten much worse, and I asked one of the Soldier-Doctors (Father says they're called Medics!) passing through if he could look at Father and maybe see about giving him some medicine, but Father told the Medic he had "Green Lung." The Medic said he was sorry, but when I asked what that was, Father didn't say, and he swore the Medic into silence with one of his trademark glares before the Medic rejoined his unit.

I'm scared for him.

You flip to nearly the end of the diary, finding this current entry has been written far more hastily than the others, as though it had been written in a hurry, and it lacks the salutations of the previous entries.

Father has told me to leave. He has been telling me for a day now, but I refused. This morning word reached the village that Colonial troops have landed near Jade Cove, and Father says they will attack Mara next, that by the time the news reached us they had likely already been ashore for days.

He was right. A bomb exploded near the beach, it killed two people, including Camille Roche. We never really knew each other, what with her being two years younger than me, but she was always so happy and full of life, even when the soldiers started rationing us, and checking everyone for weapons. She hadn't even turned thirteen yet. All I can do is hope she died quickly, not like the soldier who had been fishing with her.

I can't write much more, I shouldn't even be writing now but I snuck in a bit while Father thinks I'm packing.

I don't think he wants to come with me, he's grabbed his hunting rifle and has an old gas mask hanging on his hip at all times, and he's put a pin on his shirt, a soldier nearby said it was a medal for bravery, I never even knew he was a soldier!

I need to go, Father has started calling me, and he’ll get mad if I don't leave now with the others.

You look up from the diary as your platoon sergeant calls you over, the unit was moving along the coast, towards rural homes, and you were part of the squad advancing first. You grab your rifle and quickly head over for muster as an Armoured Car rumbles past.

Part II of my story. We leave Noel (for now) and instead focus on a Colonial unit that’s advancing on her home, enjoy!

First Centurion Gyrakos was not an easy man to try and stop, a realization that had quickly dawned on the young Colonial Officer that had tried to dissuade him from joining the mission.

“First Centurion, while I am humbled you wish to join our fighting unit for this operation, I would respectfully ask that….”

Gyrakos however cut him off with a hand. He was an older man, experienced and proficient in the arts of war, and had risen through the ranks not via politics but instead through his own merit. Now, as a battalion level officer, he rarely saw action, instead he was oftentimes behind the lines, organizing and preparing operations.

And so it was that he had assigned himself to the patrol unit against his aides and the platoon leader himself.

“I have hidden away for too long, Optio Malyk, I will not cower behind the lines like the Caovish harlots. I am a soldier, I should be soldiering!” He had boomed to the man who could do nothing to dissuade him.

Now, he was sitting in the passenger seat of a transport truck which itself was following behind two other trucks. The Platoon had been based in Huskhollow after heavy fighting to take the city and now they were heading to check the surrounding houses for enemy scouts and partisans

The first six houses, mostly outlying buildings on the river, had been empty, and the men had looted what they could. They were now heading to one of the last few houses on their list,

The convoy stopped at the end of a dirt road and the men began to exit their trucks. The buildings were just up a small hill, a two story house and a small shed.

Gyrakos looked at the quaint fisherman’s home with a genuine sense of respect. Fishing was an honest, rigorous trade, though not nearly as rigorous as war, but Gyrakos had often enjoyed a well cooked meal of fish and so respected the profession for what it contributed to society.

“Alexios, you and Brumo will advance first, because you decided to stare at a damned book in the middle of the square instead of help us fortify the town hall, and Brumo, for events that need not be named, you’ll be on point.” The Platoon Officer said pointing out two from the group as the three dozen men formed up.

Gyrakos noted the two selected did not appear particularly well liked by the rest of the unit, Alexios due to his penchant for reading a book and Brumo for being a less than enjoyable man to be around.

The two men sighed but otherwise nodded, and began to walk towards up the hill while the rest of the platoon watched, most muttering how they hoped the place was booby trapped.

Brumo had been in front, and as he passed a tree with its leaves turned orange a sharp crack was heard and, after a moment, Brumo fell dead mid stride as the platoon ducked low and hid behind their trucks.

“Sniper!”

“Did anyone see the shot?!”

“Alexios, get back here!”

“Medic, we need a medic to the front!”

“Centurion get dow-....”

A man to Gyrakos right fell as a round tore into his throat and he began thrashing on the ground, clutching his neck as blood began to gush from the wound.

“He’s in the house, second story! Get that Machine gun suppressing him!”

Gyrakos had, by this point, retrieved his binoculars and was assessing the house with a practiced eye.

There was a circular window facing the pathway from the road, the perfect spot for a sniper, and one whomever was shooting seemed to be using with deadly effect as another man fell screaming.

The steady bursts of a squad serviced machine gun rattled Gyrakos‘ sears as the HMG deployed with the platoon began to fire, sending bursts of fire at the window every few seconds.

“Alexios, Gas him! Darpin, Hectra, breach that house and kill that damned sniper!” The Platoon Officer shouted as the men executed their orders. Gyrakos nodded at their efficiency and inhaled deeply.

“Ah,” he said with a feeling of satisfaction as another man went down screaming. “Battle.”

Right, here’s part 3 of my little story, (see the doc above) though it really only has connection with Part 2, and you don’t need to read either to enjoy it, I don’t think.

Though parts 2 and 3 are side stories, not the main plot, they both represent a different side of warfare that isn’t usually shown in most games, and this part specifically represents tiredness and loss and also wastefulness.

While the second part (which I will combine with the third into a document and re-post for ease of reading) features a man who craves battle and warfare the third part’s protagonist is a man who is tired and beaten down, and has seen his fair share of war and death, but continues to fight for his own personal reasons even after seemingly leaving that life behind.

After this the next part will once again follow Noel, (and I’ll put all her parts into a single doc as well for ease of reading) and explore her thoughts and feelings as her world crumbles around her.

For now, I hope you enjoyed (and are enjoying) this so far!

Constructive criticism and stuff would be nice too. I only improve by practicing and getting, well, opinions on stuff. 😃

Neutrality is not a faction of the game, it's only the ideas of some soldiers. They have no colors, they do not have logos, they have nothing to differentiate them. The only way to "represent" the neutrals in artwork I think is to put a half colonial, another half Warden with a common action to understand the neutrality / friendship (Example: Drink a beer around 'a table)

Yesterday at an frontline:
No ranks and fairly new people are charging into the frontline from an decently supplied FOB.

After 2 hours, the supplies start running low, people are trying to scavenge ammunition and equipment off corpses, only to be cut down by an enemy machinegun.

I myself am running as a medic, i hear several people calling for me, i start running.

I see 4 colonials suffering on the ground, directly in the machinegunners line of fire, i run up to them, dodging the machinegun fire, then, i get 2 of them up, one of them died just as i got to them, then the worst happens Warden howitzer spots us, and finishes off the second suffering colonial.

The other revived allies run away back into our lines, they make it, then its my turn.....

I start to run back, then a warden shoots at me with his rifle, wounds me, then i realize im bleeding, and soon to be dead by another shot....
But no, our sniper, pops the warden's head with an sniper rifle!

I manage to run back into our line, being greeted and thanked by at least 7 friendlies, and then i get healed and again ready to go.

The End of the War

Me and a private were walking along the snowy coasts, patrolling for enemy activity. He told me it was his first 10 hours on the frontlines and was part of a regiment sent to reinforce the sector where I am at. We just recently bombed one of the warden’s last logistical stronghold in Kirknell. Like the old war dog I told stories of the times when I was just a warrant officer.

I do remember my days as a grunt. War is supposed to be over in about half an hour, messaged to us from High Command. We’d be celebrating with drinks and caovish meat turkey from Moltworth as a way to celebrate.

Airborne operation was a success and a few trucks came in to supply us at least enough to act as border control.
Though I do remember my days as a warrant officer, I was one of the many reasons why colonials were dominant in the heartlands and completely crippled warden logistics in that region. Though disaster struck as we came back to the town when the wardens attacked it, burning Moltworth.

Welp at least now I know why nobody had tried to contact river coast patrol. We were overrun.

Me and Bang headed into town to look for survivors. Fortunately we found a squad, disoriented and lost without a squad leader or an operative as all four head officers of the area are either missing or were gunned down by warden resistance.

We were all carrying explosives and have nothing but a few small arms and techparts on us.
“Who’s the next seat for command?” I asked.
“You are sir” they replied.

The situation as I understand it, we lost all ground in viper’s pit, the men I see here are probably the only survivors and now we’re walking our way back to Marban Hollow, on foot in the freezing cold region of the Caovish empire. We were moving at a slow pace but then I pointed out to a nearby enemy forth located at the very south of the region by the road.

“Men we have to get make use of our stuff and lighten our bags, unload all HEs into that enemy fort! And so we did, while walking south back towards colonial territory.

I made a promise to these men that regardless of what happens or how harsh the conditions were, I’d get them all home safe. Though I wasn’t able to keep my promise from all of them. Private Tesla, the poor rookie stepped on thin ice and it took us 2 minutes to notice he was missing.

But it was too late… he’s dead and we don’t have any medical equipment nor proficiency to resuscitate him. He was gone. It was a sad day and what we’d do now is just move on and survive in honor of him.

The night was cold and cruel but soon enough we managed to reach colonial controlled territory and the heat slowly began to return to our bodies. We survived but we aren’t out of this mess yet. I still have to get these men back home to their families. I’ve seen them in action and they risked their lives out by paradropping into the mountains, capture and fight for moltworth, survive the warden counterattack and journey through the ice cold night of winter.

Tired yet relieved and happy that the worst is over and the war won, we took a truck and drove all the way back and away from the front so that these men can reunite with their families once more. Heck they were fortunate to have a home to come back to but not for me.

For I neither have a name nor a home, not anymore.

Saving these men from viper pit was a privilege and before we parted ways, they gave out a salute and I accepted it gracefully. To whether they’d return to the front or stay within the country is now their choice to make. After all while the Caovish Government had given up on the war, its military hasn’t and we are just fighting a bunch of rebels striving to retake control over their lands.

But that’s not my concern anymore. I’ve retired, these hands were not as they used to.
You know, my own Captain told me that after the war, they’d rent a house back in heartlands, the one by Olivian 23 street? I bought the place tho, it has been rebuilt and refurbished, warm but the kids on the streets tend to throw rocks at the windows just for fun and the cats would somehow climb up the rooftops every night to mate.

I may not be a big shot of a hero as Camper, Irish Jesus, Lek or the other officers now but hopefully someone would still remember amongst the many colonials that worked with me, took a bullet for me and ate and hang out with, I do hope they remember the time that there was once a colonial who lead their group to victory in heartlands, who served with the spearhead that gave themselves for the legions and inspired us to never give up and win.

Best way to ID is if the butt attaches to the gun in a flat line (stg 44) or not (47), as well as the ammo being the biggest pointer. The AK is curvy whilest the stg not so much
