Copper isn’t used in pipes anymore because over time it flakes off (microscopically). When other chemicals are added in (like in well water) this process happens faster. As for surfaces it would be a good idea to add more copper. Just not for anything that would come into contact with you body minus your skin.

anyone who has looked at plumbing in USA or Canada will notice the ubiquous copper piping everywhere for cold and hot water piping... the ABS/PVC pipes are not safe for drinking water so when you see those, they are all drain pipes
one thing that can happen, but doesn't happen much to copper piping is called cavitation - where fluid at high velocities create bubbles that bounce off the wall of a pipe, usually on an elbow section, and over time they can make pits in the material and eventually require that section of piping to be replaced - most commonly with steel and concrete pipes used in waste piping
