Yes and no. It could have been great. But it needed a lot more work put into it than what they did. Which was a week. Which is also fair since they do this event for fun once a year and their main work and focus is on updating and adding to the main game. To any AARPG and diablo players out there. I have been gushing over the diablo 4 announcement recently, and I decided to articulate why I am cautiously optimistic about this franchise. I wrote my thoughts here and I'd love to know your thoughts.

This is quite interesting. from reading this I understood that the issue the OP is stating is that inherently very few players are actually committed to the avatars they play but rather are more interested in the items that they possess.
I'd say no, but that almost all RPGs on the market push for it.
I've seen very few RPGs that don't focus on getting better items and making your character more powerful
(all the while making enemies also more powerful, thus negating the whole thing anyway)
IMO you shouldn't so much as "build" a character, as be that character
If I end up chasing items that are 1 level higher than what I have now, I won't be having a good time

thats the ideal, but i think you can only build a avatar, and you can only be a character when it has a history and personality.
In dark souls, I had a plan that I wanted to execute, and my character was a way for me to fulfill that plan. I never embodied that character

For me, SWTOR was (and still is, I haven't abandoned it completely yet) one of the few games in which I was actually given choices that allowed me to express my character.

Star Trek Online lets you write biographies for your character and each bridge officer. In several cases I have, varying from 4 lines to 3 paragraphs.
In Skyrim I decided that the Khajiit burglar I rolled had an obsession with nord mead and I ended up stealing it wherever I could.
But even so, in Star Trek Online and Star Wars The Old Republic, your characters are still only vessels for your path through the major story missions. Between the two STO is the most linear and it's why I've lost interest in that game.
The only other thing they have going for themselves is chasing after more and more powerful gear
There's little character development, and I don't mean skill and stat points
I suppose that's why I want to actually try DnD someday
It's a format that lets you actually play a role rather than drive a character and distribute skillpoints

For example
I maxed out a thing on my Klingon Defense Force captain and I could pick a federation bridge officer. Which I did. Then I starting thinking about who would join a KDF crew, and worked from there.

so then you can find a new item as your playing, change your whole build instantly, and you're back to diablo 3.
Personally, why diablo 2 didn't have that is because you play the game as a bowzon, find only javelins, and now have to start trading those precious uniques that you just found for the gear you actually do. There is a sense of progression because of the rigidity.
In order for you to become better at something, you need to have a goal, and you need to sacrifice something to do it.
If i want to farm, I cant be pushing the highest boss damage.
I personally would love for there to be bio's, but I have no expectation from Diablo to provide a way for me to get invested in my avatar nor would I think it would add anything to the core principals
