#Space Battle controls

While on the topic of controls, is there a way to disable the mouse from steering the ship? I find even experimenting with the arrow keys, that if I press up, yet point the mouse target crosshair down, the ship doesn't go up or down, as if conflicted on 2 commands.
I've read using WASD keys to performing circles can have its use cases, yet clearly they must have changed a setting to allow that, because any aiming I do will conflict with my movements keys if if I figured out my initial ordeal.
I haven't played SWTOR in a while, and can't quite remember the terminology for some things, but I do recall something similar. Are you playing the singleplayer space battles or the PVP ones?
This is regarding the single player ones where the game forces you along a pre-selected path until the timer or mission objective is finished. I'm not aware of the other modes and how these controls change up. Though, if there are multiple setting pages for these different modes, that may explain my inconsistent results?
@sage spruce Did that answer give anything to work off of?
All of the customisable fighter controls are for the multiplayer fighter missions only, I believe. As of the last time I played, the movement controls for the singleplayer space combat "on rails", were based off your forward, backwards, turn left, and turn right keybinds for the main game.
If, like a lot of players, you've rebound the A and D keys to strafe left and right, rather than rotate, you would be unable to use these keys to move left and right in the PVE missions.
Could that be the issue?
@sage spruce Apologies for delayed reply.
Your theory was correct.
A) The game defaults [character movement] A D to turn instead of strafe, which is completely unnatural...boggles my mind how we even start there. And it appears those character controls are in charge of the [rail] mission type as you called it.
B) I take it the only work around it changing they keybinds anytime I wish to to that type of space mission 'style'?
C) I'm rather perplexed in my many attempts with different keywords on searching that this answer didn't come up. Your theory was based on what i can only assume is a repeat scenario of player seeking help for this ordeal.
Thank you* regardless.
It's a really stupid design haha. I can only guess that the devs possibly didn't know better for this type of game back 15 years ago...
As of the last time I played, changing the keybinds was the only workaround. SWTOR does allow you to have multiple keybind profile presets, which makes it a little more bearable.
There's a couple instances of people mentioning the issue out there, but they're possibly hard to find without entering keywords that would suggest you've figured out the cause of the issue in the first place. I was lucky in that I realised what was going on myself pretty quickly; I think one of my friends has just had a conversation with me about rebinding A and D.
As far as mouse steering goes, I'm not too sure whether you can disable it off the top of my head. Once I had got a second set of keybinds set up for space missions, I recall the movement worked pretty well. Let me know if it still causes you trouble and I'll boot up the game to have a look.
Cheers :)
@sage spruce The mouse steering issue became a nonissue once [A D] was set to turn on character movement. I could aim freely while moving with WASD keys without conflict.
I guess because I wasn't using a key to control the left/right movement, any twitch of the mouse to the left or right took over, hence the difficulty of steering with WS and the mouse.
