I understand your point and I appreciate the suggestion, but using Google authenticator is a guarantee of a headache if you lose your phone. (It has happened to me and I lost access to a WordPress account).
Also: Why should we solve swtor's problem? I think the right thing is for them to resolve this matter. It is not in vain that real money is invested in the game.

“The SW:TOR Security Key App and the SW:TOR Physical Security Key are no longer supported as verification methods. We recommend switching to Google Authenticator if you currently use either of these as a SW:TOR Security Key.”

I use WinAuth desktop. Basically any 2fa app will work, whether mobile or desktop. SWTOR has no way to know which one you use. They will all spit out the same number at the same time to you anyways.
You should also keep a backup in a safe place of the serial that the SWTOR website gives you when you setup your security key. That way if you lose access to that mobile or desktop, you can simply use that serial in another app on another device to get access to your account.
