It says that Vette wishes to speak to me in private but I cannot find a ‘private’ place to speak with her. Do I need to unlock the ship or an apartment to speak to her?

I thought when it said privately that meant on the ship. Then again, it may tell you where to take her when you click on her.

Sometimes in the conversation they'll reference the ship even tho you can do the conversation inside a cantina
