I am not really sure how to start but I wanted to ask the professionals how to get my channel from noob to less noob.

I have a writing and folklore channel which has content around book hauls, writing, some board game stuff and a diy degree so scholarly stuff.

I wanted to start somewhere.

Just an immediate problem is your thumbnails

#

These work fine in a scrapbook, but are awful for thumbnails

#

All the elements being similar colors make everything blend together, there's far too many elements for the eye to focus on any one detail, the elements themselves are super tiny so it's hard to even make out what's even there

#

All these things make it really easy for a possible viewer to just scroll right past your video

#

Try to limit how many things you have on screen. Look at the amount of stuff that's in other people's thumbnails

#

They tend to be limited to 2-3 major elements. The font is consistent. They use colors that contrast against each other

#

You want your thumbnail to jump out and grab somebody's attention. You only really have a few seconds AT BEST to make someone interested in your video before they continue swiping

Ya I think he nailed it on the head. When your thumbnail is against 9 other thumbnails on someones homepage or even the sidebar readability goes a long way.
Assume someone sees your thumbnail for a few seconds at most does it stick out enough to get someone to click?
