#The Jamie matchup thread

Awesome - just uploading some stuff to youtube now
I had a couple of things already uploaded - last is today's latest attempt against someone my level or above (I did beat a Silver 1 Jamie in one match out of two earlier):

My main issue is that I think most of his multihit moves either look very similar or are so fast I can't react to them with the correct response. His sweep and those moves I know are punishable generally are spaced so that you cannot punish. I am struggling to stop him drinking too as Kim's fastest way to do so (?) is the slide and unless you time it frame perfect it seems that it can be easily blocked / punished. Generally my mental stack is so overloaded playing him that I can't execute anything properly and just panic throughout. Notably in that first match I had a chance to win with a PC that I would hardly ever miss against anyone else that would definitely have killed.
I notice from the replays that I'm hit repeatedly by DR > throw but it's so fast I can't see how it's possible to react to. This is a general issue with Cammy and Juri also but it's less aggravating when they do it for me 🙂 It seems like everytime I tech when they attempt that I eat a punish instead as i "guessed wrong".
Horrible match in Gold with Jamie - my mental stack is so completely overloaded that I'm not able to AA, dropping combos all over the place, including a PC in the last round that I would hit 99% of the time usually that would have killed. No idea how to deal with this guy!
In that first video what got you killed by far the most was bad slides, that's something you really need to work on because a better player would have you dead to rights after 2-3 of those are whiffed/blocked. You may notice Jamie started jumping on reaction to your run, which let him punish the slide.
There's also reacting to DI. You blocked most of them but getting a counter-DI can lead to a pretty easy 30-40% or more with an SA3 ender for the buff as soon as you can get it.
Speaking of punishes, you don't really seem to have your combos down. When it comes down to it damage is what's gonna win you games. Especially as Kimberly who has the lowest damage in the game by far, lower even than Jamie's (before he starts getting crunk). So any time you hit them, you need to make it count.
At the start of round 2 you had a strong DI punish, but something went wrong because you went for a pretty weird raw slide after knockdown which let him mash out on his wakeup. And you missed the punish on his SA3 which could have lead to a round win potentially as you had SA3 ready yourself.
Thanks - yes, slide is my worst enemy. It's only really in this match up (and possibly Juri that's one of my bad ones as well...) that this is an issue though. Against chars like Ken / Ryu I kinda know "what to do" and iti goes a lot better in that I'm more patient, know what they are likely to do and how to counter it etc. In the Jamie match-up I seem to just panic and everything goes out of the window.
I'm horrible at reacting to DI. Doesn't matter how much I practice in training, in a match my mental stack doesn't allow me to counter-DI often. I'm actually experimenting with putting the DI button under my left little finger (ie. I have two extra buttons on my hitbox, one for left little finger and one next to the jump button for right thumb) - will see how that goes as I typically do react to the DI, just not quick enough generally.
Again, for punishes, I have less issues with dropping / forgetting against other characters. I seem to have some kind of mental block about this guy 😄 There was a couple of mis-inputs as you note in that first game that led to me getting punished pretty heavily and/or missing out on a huge amount of damage.
From the training I did earlier it being under the little finger on the left hand is definitely faster - I play classical piano at a high level so I'm used to using all my fingers 😄 - I'm a bit worried about triggering DI accidentally though right now lol
The second video you were fighting a Diamond 5 Jamie, frankly that's too high of a skill gap to expect anything but a whooping. You had a good showing but here I can give you some matchup-specific advice.
After Jamie does his rekka kicks into drinks he's -1 unless it's EX rekka. I saw him go for DR after that a few times. It's a cheeky knowledge check. You can safely jab that and get a punish on him for trying.
When it comes to rekka punches, he can't drink afterwards. I think you already know that because it looked like you were trying to punish the first guy for it. But it's probably better to go for a DR punish here so if you miss the window at least you won't be like -20 like you would be off slide.
Ok that’s a good point - I think you can punish his drink with a slide but yeah the window is pretty tight. I’ll do some lab stuff with DR instead. Generally I do need to practice checking DR as again, I’m generally not ready for it and then when they do it it’s a panic 🙂
Right, checking DR raw is really hard but now you know if you see him go for kicks rekka and go into DR it's fake and you gotta punish him for it
You had a pretty good go in the last vid, punished his greed for drinks almost every time. Realised he was going for palm on round start and blocked it. It's really just a lack of combos and damage that necked you in the end. He simply outdamaged you.
The thing with Jamie vs Kim is that you both start out as low damage characters but he ramps up faster and higher than you do, so if you take turns slapping eachother he'll eventually win by attrition
Kim's strength lies in her ability to relentlessly, effortlessly mix up her opponent over and over again. You really need to learn those setups if you want to continue climbing with her.
Thanks - that's really useful. I need to calm down and play more slowly against him. I can do the Kim mix thing to an extent and steamroller over people - heck I took a match (straight rounds) off a master Luke yesterday which is a highlight for me. I think a lot of it is that Jamie doesn't have any absolutely obvious massive punishable moves like Ken / Ryu / Juri's whiffed DP or Cammy's blocked Spiral Arrow / Cannon Spike that you have an age to prepare for to do max damage. It's all about hitting Jamie in a pretty small window and comboing off that automatically which to be fair, I likely don't have down yet.
All in all Jamie is a relatively safe character, yeah. Some say he's a rushdown character but I disagree. He plays a bit like Chun Li in that he's got a lot of versatile mid-range tools and a lot of ways to make those tools unpunishable on block. His oki is kinda stinky midscreen as well but once he has 3 drinks or more he becomes pretty amazing as a character.
Jamie struggles in the defense department a bit despite having an EX DP (it loses to neutral jump) and especially if you can keep him from drinking he'll have an absolute bitch of a time with low damage and an incomplete kit.
You're not gonna stop him from getting crunk completely though because he can confirm a drink off a jab. But if you do manage it he'll just say fuck you and use SA2 once he gets it. The upside is that he drops straight back to 0 after it ends and his super meter is locked for 15 seconds so you can get a resource advantage easily.
You basically just want to deny him early drinks. No drinks = no snowballing (without SA2). Make him go for kick rekka or DR cancels to get his drinks in. Make him spend meter on it. And never respect him after he drinks, unless it's in the corner because then he actually gets oki after chugging a lot of the time
Kick rekka does baby damage but it guarantees a drink so it's a popular way to get your first drink in
So I finally got a win vs Jamie in ranked - was a horrible match and he didn't seem to want to drink which really helped but a win's a win and I'll take it - onwards and upwards now!
My first win in ranked (in phase 2) against Jamie - horrible match but I'll take it!
