Hello everyone, I am new to SFV and I am having a ton of trouble with understanding the timing for how fast or slow to input buttons and movements. I am doing the combo trials and do I have to visually wait for the full animation to play out before starting to even press the next button? I feel if I do it before it finishes, the game doesn't register the input, is that correct? I am stuck on Chun-Li's second combo trial and it requires a charge input (spinning bird kick heavy) after the first hit of cr.hp but I can't seem to understand how to charge long enough to get it out before the second hit of her cr.hp comes out.

I've been having this issue with most characters as I really am struggling with the input buffer and how the game sees inputs as valid and either too early or too late. I know a lot of this is practice but I don't know if I'm just not fast enough, too slow, not waiting for the full move to get to a certain point before inputting or what.

Any help would be appreciated as this has been my single biggest issues because it really prevents me from understanding how and when to execute buttons for combos.

So there are two entirely different timings for moves that combo in this game

Links and cancels

For a link, you're right - you need to wait your move out all the way before pressing the same button

#

The game is pretty lenient so once you have the timing down it's not too bad

#

If you have the training dummy to 'block after first hit' it's easy to tell if you were off - if the second move doesn't come out, you were too early. If it comes out but was blocked, you were too late

#

Cancels are different: you're actually cancelling the second half of your move to start your second move (usually a special attack) early

#

You do this by inputting the second move fast

Very fast

Your c.hp (1) xx sbk is a cancel

How long to charge is a different beast entirely

It varies by move, but the minimum is usually somewhere around 2/3 of a second

When you start you will probably feel like you need a bunch more time

What's the combo you're trying to do?

Is it just c.hp xx sbk

See the trick there is that you can charge for as long as you want before you press c.hp

#

You don't have to go back to neutral or anything

#

So you hold down, press hp, then up+hk
