Today I saw notifications about setting up a daily award or there being unopened boxes for me. When I opened the game, NOTHING!
Why do the mobile/android notifications for Rec Room lie so often?

They don't "lie", they are just notifications to try and get you back into the game and it looks like it worked on you. There are daily rewards, but you have to do RRO activities to get them, just like the actual daily challenge.
