For context, a shia friend of mine doesn't believe he (s.a.w) was. Is this another point of difference between sunnis and shias or is this a known fact?
As far as I have always been told, the Prophet s.a.w couldn't read or write. This is of course never meant as an insult to him astaghfirullah, but I always thought of it as fact.

No, just that she thought the Prophet s.a.w learnt it after the revelation

Yes the Prophet (S) remained illiterate from birth until death, as far as I am aware. The proof of the matter is many, but one big one is that, when signing the treaty of Hudaibiah, he requested Ali (R) to read it aloud to him (because he (S) cannot read) and also to sign on his (S) behalf (since he (S) cannot write).
