So I'm medically mute and my chat box stops texting midway through sentence when I'm still typing

Hi @lament plinth. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base. :wave:

That sounds frustrating, especially as someone who relies on the chatbox for communication! Here are a few things to check:

Chatbox Cutting Off Mid-Typing

Character limit: The chatbox has a 144-character limit, so if your message reaches that length, it will stop accepting input. [Chatbox]

Auto Send setting: VRChat has a "Send Text Automatically" feature that can send your message while you're still typing it. If this is enabled, your message may be sent (and the chatbox cleared) before you finish. You can turn this off in Settings under the Chatbox section — look for "Send Text Automatically" and toggle it Off. [Chatbox Settings]

Tips for Communication

Since you rely on the chatbox, here are some additional options that may help:

  • OSC-based text-to-speech (TTS) or speech-to-text (STT) tools can integrate with VRChat's chatbox via OSC, allowing more flexible text input. [Community:Mute]
  • You can also send text to the chatbox via OSC using /chatbox/input, which supports features like new lines and disabling the notification sound. [OSC Input Controller]

Disabling "Send Text Automatically" is likely the most immediate fix if your message is disappearing before you finish typing.

@thorn dawn no like, one time I was typing " I'm 5'2" and it said "I'm 5"

That's a great example — and it does sound like the "Send Text Automatically" (Auto Send) feature is the culprit. When this is enabled, VRChat sends your message live to other players as you type, which means it can display a partial message (like "I'm 5") before you finish the full sentence ("I'm 5'2""). [Chatbox 2.0]

To fix this, turn off "Send Text Automatically" in your Chatbox settings. You can find it in:

With Auto Send turned off, your message will only be sent when you manually submit it, so others will see the complete sentence rather than a partial one.

Based on the knowledge sources available, the most likely explanation is the 144-character limit. The chatbox has a hard cap of 144 characters — once you reach that limit, no more text can be entered, and the message will appear cut off. [Chatbox]

To work around this:

  • Keep messages shorter and send them in multiple parts.
  • Use OSC to send text to the chatbox, which also supports up to 144 characters per message but gives you more control over input. [OSC Input Controller]

Unfortunately, the knowledge sources don't describe any other technical reason why the chatbox would stop accepting input mid-sentence beyond the character limit. If you're consistently hitting this issue with shorter messages (well under 144 characters), it may be worth reporting it as a bug to VRChat directly, as that would be outside what the available documentation covers.
