This is a long standing design flaw in the SkinnedMeshRenderer. You can’t set the bones using the inspector. The Root property doesn’t control that, it’s only used for root motion I believe.
You can assign the bones in code and get the desired effect. You can also do this by writing an editor extension.
Instead of changing the rig, a quick hack is to set the mesh property of the SkinnedMeshRenderer to whatever mesh you want.

You can't unfortunately. The feature used for scaling avatars at runtime was removed while AV3 was in beta just before the launch.
There might be some hacky workaround, but it's not a feature that's supported anymore.

I find that once your prefab is broken, you can no longer update it with changes to the armature/bone structure. Which I do, all the time.

physics bones is vrchats alternative to dynamic bones, which is a part of the avatar dynamics stuff they are working on

Hello, is the "avatars 3" thing still in beta or something? I've yet to see such an avatar. According to a video from 2020 I should be able to tell if an avatar is 3 by being able to move my arm around via the mouse from the R menu.
Every avatar that has anything but the default emotes in the action wheel is 3.0. AV3 has been out for months and most new avatars are using it

Bug in VRC. Depending on your setup it may or may not appear properly in current Open Beta.
It's due to the way VRC updates constraints. They're not 100% exact. If you really want to have more exact movement with it, you can use a Rigidbody Fixed Joint, but it's a little less performant

Youtube tutorials should tell, even with new VRoid studio it should be the same. Id go the route where you convert your .vrm to .fbx in blender, and then carry over the .fbx and textures to unity for upload
whats the difference between "private" and "public" avatars when uploading?
Public avatars can be cloned if the person using it has cloning on, private cannot be cloned at all regardless of the clone setting. Private therefor means only the uploader can use the avatar

i am constantly getting these errors in the sdk control panel saying the the head, hands, feet, hips, and upper arms aren't specified. when i check the avatar configuration, all of the bones are mapped correctly. what could be going on?

try duplicate the mesh, remove shapekeys on one and apply modifier, then use "mesh data transfer" to transfer the blendshapes from the old mesh to the new

it depends on what you mean by Hand movement. I'm thinking of the hand like default/custom finger positions because that's moving just the hand
Literally describe it. Without looking I'm going to guess you want to say 'controlling the arm like a puppet', mainly because that's the only other 'hand' movement I can think of right now that would require a tutorial.
I'd ask for help/resources in #avatar-help. Though the people that lurk in here lurk there too you'll have a better chance of a reply. Should be easier to get across what you want if you refer to it as such.

I had was making some mouth blend keys. Realized I liked my model better with a smaller nose. Making the smaller nose a Shape Key and replace the base shape key with the new one seems to have done the trick

Not really, it isn't specifically for VRChat, vrcarena is the only VRChat specific site of those, and it is only going to be for if you wanted to upload your own. Some creators might have links to worlds that you can use public uploads though
There is no catalogue of avatars, you really do have to just go through worlds in VRChat to find avatars

is there a way to have a toggle-able object on my 3.0 avatar without having to make the ON and OFF animations for it? i want it to be able to switch from 1 object to another or just turn off entirely with just the ON animation. I feel like there should be an option/tick box somewhere that tells the animator that IF the toggle variable value isnt 1 anymore, automatically disable it and go back to the original state or whatever the toggle value is set to in the present.
values in your expression menu and such are just that. values. they won't have any real effect until you use them in a condition for a transition. so you kinda need an animation that sets the gameobject to off. if you don't need to have more than one object on at a time I guess you could make an off animation that turns off multiple objects and then you can just turn on a specific object after
I don't want to say that you 100% need an off animation as I could be missing something that I don't know about but as far as I know you need to turn off the gameobject somehow and that can only really be achieved through an animation

Looking at parameter drivers. Basically a component you add to an animation.
You'll still need to have the on and off thing going on in a layer, you just wouldn't need to have a button in a menu for it.

so apparently you can "pollute" the standard shaders with specific shader settings 
like if you changed a material to use a standard shader and then set an emission etc, it would keep those values and later when you enable custom shaders for the person the material is now considered as a custom / broken variant of its currently selected form

i was trying to do that you can make yourself smaller but the viewpoint wont go with you so if youre in vr youre pretty much screwed also you wont get put on the ground if you scale yourself down so the best you can do i think at least from my exp is to make an animation from 100% to 20% depending how small you wanna go and put it on a float parameter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTrXcij3z8M there was this but i dont think they implemented this yet unfortunately

There’s a ton of reasons not just nsfw. Model could’ve been stolen, maybe had malicious features you didn’t know about or, as Slvr said, the owner could’ve removed/privated the model to edit it or to clean up space in their uploads.

So I don't see how you can mouth track without a camera, so its just not feasible until u get a computer, or that little doo-hicky build to go on top of ur computer
Mouth tracking is possible to do for a quest player lox it can even be as easy as jaw flapping and or animations for when u make certain sounds il bc I have a avatar creator as a friend just they charge and I wish I could but I'm on covid lockdown and my money goes to food and stuff to hole me for my time out

Dynamic bones isn’t made by unity. It was never free. You probably bought a model and the creator packaged it with the avatar even though they shouldn’t of.
It's been distributed thousands of times that it's essentially free now

They whilelist the use of dynamic bones in their game, yes, but you don’t get the assets/scripts to add it to models in unity. You can’t clone a public model and then add dynamic bones to an object in unity that’s just not how it works.
Right but you can use dynamic bones in the game regardless of purchasing them, or even uploading an avatar with them.
Also note that you can build your own 'blank' script in Unity with all the dynamic bone variables for free, totally legal, and VRChat will replace it with the real dynamic bone script in-game

Dynamic bones costs money. You don’t buy it but get it from a 3rd party to use in unity. That’s the issue here
That is a flawed anaology/comparison; having access to the literal files of an avatar (with dyn bones) is distinct from being a user who just plays their game with it

IIRC, there is a fake DynamicBone script containing only the properties and none of the actual code floating around, with the downside of not being able to preview in the editor. VRC see's it as the real script since it has the same name and loads it as the actual thing in-game.

I/We don't need to purchase the systems the dev team use to make their game function. We aren't using the scripts for development, they are. Compared to dynamic bones where I/we are using the scripts to develop content in unity, it's pretty self explanatory that you should buy the asset for your personal use even if that personal use is to upload a model to a platform like Vrchat or ChilloutVr.

quick question: what are some good starting points for damping, elasticity, stiffness, gravity and force for a tail which should fall down?
Depends on the volume of the tail, short, medium, long, how thick or thin the overall size is.
Force is all you really need for tails, setting it to -0.002 is a generally good start, bigger the volume means less value.
short, pretty thin
Damping - 0.367
Elasticity - 0.021
Stiffness - 0.01
Inert - 0
Radius - (0.0+ The radius balls should not be fully poking out of the mesh)
Force - -0.002
Try these settings and lower or increase the value until it's the desired motion.
Also depends if you're wanting an energetic tail or a more relaxed tail, but hope this helps!

Apart from the file Icons and the right side being sdk2 instead of sdk3, 2019's theme is a little less Windows XP else they look extremely similar and function the same way.

The game has no mouse support, so everything is long menus, if you want to build a wall you need to press

It works the same as PC as far as I'm aware, other than for Quest all Very Poor are always hidden, but all the way up to poor can be automatic

it disables the game going in to AFK mode, which should only happen when you bring up the Steam or Oculus overlay, or take off headset, so I'm not sure what situation you would do those and also want tracking. I don't think you get tracking when you are in the Steam or Oculus overlay regardless

Viseme values are set internally when you speak. You just need to check for certain values to play certain animations
So as I understand, the values of visemes change automatically

Logically, blindness is a reduced visibility length of the eyes (in the darkness), so it might be a reproduction of this effect for this shader

Other than make some people crash when uploading or cause the upload to take a ridiculous amount of time for some others? It uploads a unitypackage to the server along side your avatar that can be recovered by the person who uploaded the avatar supposedly, I have never had future proof on so I have never tested it

sdk3 does use Animator controllers. There's a few set up as examples in the sdk

There's no specific time duration, it's based on how actually active you are.
If you're sitting idle for most of that 12 hours, it won't count as much.

You can go to VRC Traders discord to find a proper commissioner #community-servers-old invite is at the top of the list
make sure you also have good references too so that what you want can be conveyed to the commissioner and there isnt a guessing game being played

Poiyomi Toon Shader is basically the first Main everyone uses when they want toon shading
I would love to remember the others so I could suggest those, but Poiyomi is the generic catch all

Starting to explore the entire avatar creation thing and was just wondering here. Would it theoretically be possible to implement a teleportation function within the avatar? Like, say, you're looking at a certain spot, and the moment you trigger a certain key you teleport to that spot
Possibly if you animate and push a collider into yourself that would fling you to that location, but it probably would be pretty jank and be a nightmare to set up.
Teleporting other users would be easy though, since you could just use a chair component and put the exit point anywhere else. You can't use a chair on your own avatar so that's why it won't work for yourself.
So essentially I'd have to search for a workaround, huh. I can see why it's not a thing though. Being able to teleport yourself in some game worlds could very well be considered cheating
When OSC support for avatars comes out, if you're able to interface the OVR advanced settings playspacemover with av3 then you could set up a macro to offset your playspace to teleport

If you're getting caved in shoulders on avatars, it means the avatar was likely in A pose and not T pose in blender. T pose is very important tbh. And it took me so long to figure out why this was happening lmao
Basically T pose the shoulders into the position you want them to rest at. (Then follow with the arms ofc) Then they will look normal when you wear it
Even if the bone position looks a bit weird in blender at first

Yeah it puts your character in T pose in the humanoid. But sometimes your shoulders need to go farther up than that in order to look straight which is where the problem arises, put in T in blender with how you want your shoulders to rest

Do the shoulders look straightened in the T pose? Like visually is more of what matters in the case of the shoulders thing rather than their bones
i found out that just putting the viewpoint lower quickly made the arms not bend so much, so i didnt have to do work on broadening the shoulders, thankfully

As for your question, you need knowledge of Unity's animators and animation system to do this. You should look up some unity tutorials to find out how to do this. And don't expect to get everything in one day, Unity is very complex and takes a while to learn

Hey, I don't know really anything about avatar creation but I was wondering if its possible to create an avatar with a mute keyboard thats not attached to the avatar itself? Like all the keyboards ive seen have been attached to one arm so you have to just hold your arm still and type with the other hand. Im not sure of current limitations, can you have things that are "part" of an avatar that aren't actually connected to an avatar's movement?

I've tried copy pasting my username and ik all my passwords, none have worked so far so prob just messing something up, but one of them should have signed me in
In the username box type ur email you used while making your vrchat account, NOT steam or oculus emails (unless it happens to be the same email you used for vrchat)

I think it should be fine as long as whatever you are buying isn't reliant on C# scripts since VRChat don't work with those (except very few whitelisted ones)
Id email the devoloper of the asset about that specifically to make sure its gud with VRChat

what's the reason why a lot of creators avoid having write defaults on when it comes to facial anims?
i get the face-blurring-together bug like 100% of the time so i always have it on, but i see a lot of creators advising against it

Its a matter of keeping track of animation effects. Once you turn on WD anywhere, you need to keep track that these animations may write to multiple values that are not in the animation itself. When blended with other animations and layers it can get pretty confusing to understand what default values are being written.

Just download size far as i know, still gonna use the same amount of vram
so a unity "engineer" told me if i crunch my avatar's texture, itll make the avatar download size smaller but heavier use of CPU GPU

Maybe it gotta uncrunch the textures or something? And maybe that’s what they meant? But even if that’s the case it would only affect when your avatar is being loaded and not afterwards while it’s already loaded

Crunch reduces the file size at a trade off for CPU overhead as it has to unpack said image once it's loaded into memory and then it uses more memory as it sits unpacked in GPU memory
The tradeoff is minor, when talking about a single image, or a few images, it will be negligible
Crunch can save a lot in terms of File download size so it's ideal to use it when possible

Correct, the memory usage of the image when unpacked into VRAM is the same post crunch for the most part and the CPU overhead is only when unpacking said image

He's not wrong, there is extra overhead, but in your case, and in most cases, the trade off is negligible/minor

You should almost always crunch your textures. There is pretty much no reason to not do it
The Unity engineer dude have read these replies in this chat as hes in the server and told me these feedbacks arent doing me good because the VRChat loadbundle would unpack the texture one by one making the loading of the avatar longer and heavy, but not because the CPU/GPU expensive, but VRChat system just freezes the game to unpack them and continues after the crunched textures loaded. And he said even for a 1material 1 2048 texture avatar like mine. I am conflicted if hes just gaslighting me or he's telling factual info

I've also talked to a reliable person which is close with the core members of vrchat team , his name is kingtodd, and he also told me the same thing as you did
Gaslighting u. Every single avatar I've ever uploaded uses crunch and my world uses crunch for every single texture. You'd have to have a shit fuck ton of textures to have a hitch like that and typically when there's a hitch loading an avatar, it's because of shaders.
You can literally test this yourself by uploading it with a crunch texture and uploading it without and then clearing your cache and loading each. I can wager they would load at virtually the same amount of time. A single crunch texture ain't shit. He's technically not wrong, but in order to have the issues he's claiming, you'd need a lot more textures, or much larger (like 4k, 8k) textures, or multiple of those. You're not doing any so crunching your single texture should typically result in faster download times.
Besides, even if there was a hypothetical hitch on load because of a crunch texture, I'd wager most would accept the trade off for longer download times. But this isn't the case or my avatars and worlds would be virtually unusable.

Nope. VRC doesn't allow values over 100
You'd have to create a duplicate shape in blender and then you can set both to 100 at the same time
just change the value above 100 manually in the number box while animating
works in editor so i dont see why it wouldnt work in vrchat
VRchat has a setting turned on in Unity that disallows values over 100 in-game. The editor allows it because some games will allow this behaviour. VRChat doesn't
