Any tips on getting the last crunch to 7.5k? I did quite a bit and I'm currently sitting at 8.6k, no desire to redo the face and shape keys, especially seeing as how I use quite a few on the PC version and I want animations to stay in sync between the two versions...

I could understand if there were less tris in blender than polys counted in vrcsdk, cause some faces might be quads that get converted to triangles beforehand in unity, but thats not the case here.....

depends on what you want
something like an anime avatar would take a large amount of work to port to quest, whether you're making one out of parts or creating it from scratch

that's an amount of work depending on how you tackle it
the main hurdle is retopology, if you're developing for quest
that's the actual difficult bit, everything else is just a matter of learning how to upload / edit avatars and just doing it
which takes a while but isnt really difficult as much as it is tedious and time consuming, until you learn how to do it
so perhaps obvious question: but so much of vrChat has "ready made assets" that people acquire, but how are these assets made?
the original meshes, not hacked or ripped existing avatars/etc. i'm going to spend thu-sun googling and youtubing, but casually, i mostly see people doing mods, not new stuff

@long talon if you're still around, you may want to try setting it to "keep quads" in the unity import. Your hair is the main issue, using decimation won't help, re-topology is your friend.
however, if the hair is symmetrical you might want to try "unsubdivide" and "planar decimation" modifier instead
it's since it's probably not gradient weight painted and doesn't have to move with the body mesh the hair could look identical as a bunch of large quads/faces
you can find this by looking here:
click "add modifier" "decimate" and try collapse, and triangulate, and keep symmetry on x, since the hair looks symmetrical.
that could get you a good 500-750 back
I made a quest avatar, but Inventor made it so each color is it's own texture- so I have 13 textures, and "poor" preformance

@gusty storm Try this. Go into edit mode > select one of the polygons from the shoe > hit Ctrl + L to select all polys connected to it > now move all of them to the left
Alternatively you can seperate the model by materials, selefct the entirety of the shoe in edit mode and move it
if both shoes are using the same mat, separate by materials wont do, in that case, you would want separate loose parts

So I've been wondering what is the highest reasonable amount of polygons for a Quest avatar to have? Not the official numbers because I already know I can't drop avatars down to 5000 polygons yet. For example, is 40000 polygons fine, or will it lag people tons

the problem with having the avatars being higher polygons that would cut down the amount of people you can have in the room if they all had high-poly avatars as you wouldn't want to max out the GPU
but u cant see the pc players anyway
there's also technical reasons why you can't see PC users as their data is a PC format and the quest only knows how to speak Android

So I have another question (I apologize for the amount I'm asking). I'm trying to figure out facial expressions, but I've been getting lost in the tutorials. The one tutorial I was following had you drag a hand animation (which you downloaded from a link) onto a duplicate of your avatar. In his tutorial, the duplicate snapped back to where the original avatar was, and the animation was applied. When I did it, my avatar didn't change or move at all. I don't know if this is a common problem but I figured I may aswell ask instead of struggling when there might be an answer here.

So, I'm totally new to avatar making, and I'm a bit lost. I've figured out how to make an mmd model into an avatar, and how to "make" an mmd model by putting together clothes, bases, etc., but now I don't know what I should be going for next. Should I continue using mmd models or is there a different/better method I am missing (beside making avatars from scratch, since that is WAAAAAY more advanced than anything I can do)

I feel like I'm pully my hair out here because I keep getting close to 10k, I took someone's advice made sure no hidden meshes and deleted tris one by one (still not good at combining tris). Is there anything else other than deleting pieces which I have done or are some avatars just like that? I'm a noob still.

Dissolving edges will be your friend with reducing polycount
I posted a 39999 polygon avatar and quest players could see it as long as they manually show it (which is pretty typical). I wouldn't advise it, since I did it just to see how high of a poly count the quest can see

Well multiple sources say the amount that works. Just because you see no problems at higher polygons, doesn't mean it isn't causing issue. They were not really being rude, just an analogy comparing. Plus, it's not knowing everything. It's relaying what the developers of the game, have said.

They really should be as low poly as possible. Quest gpu takes a much larger hit from polygons than pc gpus do

I'm just trying to get in the 15k-25k range and have a nice looking avatar tbh. Then again, that's bc I suck at reducing polygons and I don't really care if people have to unblock my avatar (although I wish there was an option to automatically unblock poor performance avatars because I unblock them anyways)
So watch some tutorials to reduce polycount it's very easy I promise you

You only have to cut down the Quest version, too. Nothing says you have to have parity between the two. As long as the armature is the same it should be fine IIRC.

Mobile GPUs suffer a lot with transparency, so nope. You can use the alpha blended particle shader for simple meshes on a second material and it shouldn't be that bad.
Oh believe me, I'm watching tutorials π there's just a lot of stuff I want to troubleshoot before I start going into detail with cutting down my polygons. I'd find it a waste to spend tons of time lowering polygons on a broken/bad looking avatar

So I'm back again with a another super noob question so I just made a avatar using a TDA base, now I've did this before and it worked okay I guess but this build does have a large number of tris (So maybe if I decimate it it would be fine? I just want to test the avatar in vrchat before I start blowing up anything again π©π.). Its telling me my assets are too large to load into vrchat of course its 10mb for the quest limits (80mb on my bulid), I did compression my textures but that only reduced it to 75mb lol. I'm not very bright to figure out how to fix this atm π.

To reduce file size you should manually atlas (instead of auto atlas), delete shapekeys you won't use, reduce poly limit, and crunch your textures or limit their max size

@cunning imp yeah I did the cruch texture but that did work, the base I used did have much textures and was very simple turns out it was just the hair that was almost I think 30 to 35k manage to up load and turned out messed up because of the weight painting π so I did a new base today and see if it works correctly hopefully.

Is there any way to make a vrchat avatar only useable by one person that isnt you? I want to make an avatar that a person can have in their "made" avatars (so it doesn't take up a slot in favorite), but they don't have a computer to run unity and I don't want to use their account information bc that just seems like I'm trying to scam them. Another method is to put the avatar in a world, then have them favorite the world

since you have 120 world favorite slots opposed to 16 avatar slots
Or they could set it to their home world
which takes up no slots, and has the benefit of being a small world that loads quickly for them
They could also favorite it, and keep it in the favorite slot untill they HAVE to replace it, to make that method less of a hastle, only going back to the world when need be.

Anyone know what might be causing a portion of my avatar to turn black when using vrchat standard lite and toon lit? Everything is fine using the standard Unity shader; it only occurs with VRChat standard lite and VRChat toon lit.

@pastel storm Becoming verified by the trust system is based on reaching a not time based trust score, which's exact algorithm is unknown to prevent exploitation.
You presumably need to play the game in a normal manner with your VRChat account, walking around, meeting people and also making some friends. Idling won't help.
According to many responses in this discord, a rough estimate would be 20-40 hours, but big exceptions are possible.
Make sure you are not using a steam or oculus account because those can not be verified and continue playing the game until you get a notification or e-mail.

Question how do you remove a audiosource from an premade model? I keep deleting the audio or the components also anything that looks audio wise but the build still says its on it.

You can launch it with steam but you should have an account on vrchat.com that you can also use to log into the game.

There is no way to get around it as it is enforced client side. Even if the shader was uploaded with the avatar, the client would swap it out on the fly for an approved shader. You cannot have custom shaders on avatars on Oculus Quest.
There's nothing that hurts more than decimating a model to 13k polys and being physically incapable of going lower

@buoyant ridge look for the places that arenβt as popular and have the correct tags or wait for someone to give you a world. I have seen people with inkling avatars on quest so you should be able to find one somewhere

Oh, I definitely have time in the mornings. I'm not very good at 3d-modeling. I'm better at scraping things together. Browsing around it seems like I should be able to do that from public provided object models like hair and equipment. If I have the right program, is it possible to throw stuff together and just add, i guess joint points to it?
I think some models come pre-rigged, which is nice. It wouldn't hurt to brush up on rigging in general, though
Kitbashing is where most people start and where most people stay for vrchat. You should use blender and watch a tutorial like Tupper's megatutorial. There's a good amount of vrchat specific tutorials but don't be afraid to look up basic blender stuff
If you do use blender you may want to start on 2.79 (2.8 just came out) as none of the tutorials out rn are using 2.8
but if you wanna get proficient at blender itself
its better to start on 2.8 right away
all you gotta remember is, CATS is on the right
and then blender 2.8 is easy

hey so i have this weird glitch where if i upload an avatar it comes out invisible but if a friend uploads the same avatar from my unity package it will work, does anyone know why that might be?

My SDK is a little weird since whenever I click check for updates it says I have one, but then when I try to download it its the same one I had before, but I download and install it anyways and when i check for updates it still picks up saying there is an update, but my friend said his does that too

Hey all, I believe I have encountered a bug?
So Iβm using the oculus quest, but for some reason two avatars that Iβm using show up as errors to most of the players I encounter
Those two avatars are the butter avatar and a quest compatible Stormtrooper Avatar
The butter avatar is the most confusing one though
And they also show up on my screen, but not otherβs
Any ideas for fixes?
I'm on PC and have had issues with others seeing some of my known working avatars as the error bot, and myself seeing both PC and Quest users as error bots while other users in the room see them just fine.
I think the issue is with VRChat itself and will get fixed.

i had a error with the quest avatar 2a-7s (the one with white hair and light pink eyes). the other quest avatars loaded so it might just be a temporary probelm
it's not temporary, unless the original uploader checks their email and goes "OH SHIT"
@shadow olive check if that model has 2 uv maps in blender, if not - create another material in blender for the eyes (if you don't have it already), select eye vertices and in edit mode when you select eye material you should be able to Apply(button) this vertices to eye material
When I apply the VRChat/Mobile/Toon Lit to my model most of it is pitch black. Does anyone know how to fix it?

@shadow olive you put in the blueprint ID inside the pipeline manager?

at the top of the unity window, go to vrchat, then manage uploaded content, get your avatar and click the copy avatar id button
then you can select your quest avatar in the scene or the hierarchy, and in the inspector on the right, either below or above the avatar descriptor, there's a pipeline manager, if its rolled up, expand it, under blueprint ID, remove the current one and paste in the one you copied from the other window.
now you can upload for both platforms under the same ID

Hm. You could try selecting the vertices around edges of mouth and then extruding to create new connected vertices to use to cover the inside of mouth.
That's what I've been attempting with a loose part of her hair on the inside of her head, doesn't really look quite right
If it is the color that is wrong, you need to change the texture of those faces in uv mode which will be more work unfortunatelly
Oh right you probably meant the shape but you'll need to have the right color anyways.

but you would need separate modeling software to do the optimizations as Unity doesn't include modeling tools sufficient for making avatars
@shadow olive Well blender has painting tools. You can split view in blender by dragging a triangle looking icon made of lines in one of the corners of the 3d mode view. You should now switch the second 3d view to uv from left bottom of the view. If you have uv editor opened you can switch it from uv's view mode to paint mode. But it's probably not enough and I can't really stay longer right now.

yeah saw them in blender but it onlyngave it a finger and a thumb
you need to seperate the fingers a bit more so mixamo knows theyre fingers
i ran into the same issue with my model
it needs to have a separate thumb, index, and middle finger
so thats what that message is
but the model dosent really have seperate fingers
its all gloved
i dont know how to make dummy fingers, but look into it
you can just add like 2 bones wherever and make them the middle finger

grey would be the pretty standart basic hoodie color, so itd fit and its nice and simple but maybe a bit boring, pink fits with her eye and wing color but it may be a bit much, blue looks really cute but doesnt really fit the character or have anything to do with her, and brown looks really cute warm and comfortable, but idk

not possible on the Oculus Quest as Dynamic bones are not allowed
as they're basically framerate murder and mobile Hardware doesn't have the frames to spare

You could try parenting the hair bones to the chest so it stays down, you'll have some bad stretching around the neck even with some good weight painting though
No way to have the bones do anything special as none of the methods are allowed on quest
I always parent the hair to the spine. And weight paint front hair to the chest. I still let some influence to the head so the hair move a little bit across the surface

If itβs low res sprite try making it in magica voxel. You can drag and drop png images and export as obj files

In VR there is no such thing as a crouch animation. As your headset lowers it bends your legs to compensate
However if you lay down in VR your avatar will use a prone animation or lay down
your head just squishes into your torso
Therefore you can change your prone animation but not your crouch animation
It's just a bunch of jargon in the end lol
Scena is a proficient creator, there shouldnt be any problems getting stuff working thats possible
Big thing is the difference between animations and inverse kinematics and how/when vrchat uses animations vs raw IK
so Scena says: Will go into a crouching position, scinon says: wont go into a preset position, but bend knees, and blue says: torso will just float down into the legs without legs moving

Well crouching position and bending knees is the same thing. The IK system works by emulating how the bones would work IRL
So as your headset lowers the hips go down, knees forward. So all 3 of us are explaining the same thing differently
